The sound of the front door closing brought Danni back to her senses, and she looked up. Who had left? She glanced at the clock, confirming her assumption that it was far too early for her mother to be taking her turn to hunt. There was no other reason for anyone to be going out, unless... She stood up abruptly, left her bedroom and ran down the stairs to find her father standing in the middle of the living room, looking extremely satisfied.
"What did you do?!" she demanded.
"What I should have done when you first brought him here," her father replied coolly.
"You kicked him out? No! Why?"
"Yes, I sent him home. He was becoming a liability, Danni."
"Dad!"
"You told him what we are, and then you attacked him - after kissing him. You're lucky he's still alive."
"You might as well have killed him, Dad!" she shouted. "His father will do worse than that when he gets his hands on him! He's got nowhere else to go - even if he doesn't go home, his dad will find him eventually."
"His father would have found him here, you know that."
"But we would have been able to protect him!" she insisted.
"But we wouldn't have," he snapped, irritated. "We've got no business protecting humans."
"He's not just a human, Dad!"
"What is he then? Your human?"
"No, of course not. Don't be ridiculous. He's... My friend." It occured to her that he might not even be that now, but she continued anyway. "And I want to help him, okay?"
"Why?"
"His dad quite happily beats him to within an inch of his life every day. Excuse me for having a heart."
Her father had seen her beginning to edge toward the door. "Danni..." he said in a warning tone.
"No. I'm going after him, Dad, and I'm bringing him back here, and he's not going anywhere." Without waiting for a response she left the living room, slamming the door behind her, and then there was a brief pause before the even louder slam of the front door.
Despite the length of the argument she'd just had with her father, Lucas had hardly reached the end of her road by the time Danni raced out onto the street. "Lucas!" she yelled, hastening after him at what she hoped was at least close to a human pace. He had already stopped walking and turned to face her, but as she reached him she grabbed onto his shoulders all the same. "Lucas, you're not going anywhere," she told him firmly. "I don't care what my dad said, I'm not letting him kick you out." A sudden thought occurred to her, and she released his shoulders. "That is, unless you want to go. After what just happened, I wouldn't exactly blame you." She smiled sheepishly. "Listen, if you don't want to be around us anymore then I won't make you stay, but I think we'll both agree that you can't go home. I'll find you somewhere else to go if you want. Somewhere... Human."
Danni sighed and looked at her feet, feeling embarrassed. "I don't want anything to happen to you, Lucas. Despite what I've just done--" she glanced involuntarily toward the bite on his neck, which appeared to be healing. "--I do care about you. I'm really sorry that I messed everything up." Still refusing to meet Lucas' gaze, she half turned to walk away, but hesitated. "It's up to you, Luc, but there's still a room waiting for you if you want it."
