Danni walked calmly along the deserted hallway of the school, taking in her surroundings as she navigated her way toward the room her timetable said was her form room. Well, it was different - a challenge. She found herself wondering how long it would be before she got kicked out of this one. Not that it bothered her - she'd been to a lot of schools in her time, and would probably go to a lot more in the future - but she'd left her previous one a little earlier than planned, thanks to her carelessness, and she still felt rather disappointed in herself.

She looked up as she approached the classroom, and knocked lightly before opening the wooden door. Striding confidently toward the teacher's desk, she put the papers an elderly receptionist had given her before him and waited. The teacher spluttered, confused, and after a moment of leafing through the papers peered up at her, squinting at her through his glasses. "I, uh, wasn't expecting a new student. Are you sure you have the right class?"
Danni met his gaze evenly, and spoke calmly. "Yes."
"W-well alright then, I suppose I'd best introduce you." He turned his attention to the class. "Class? We have a new pupil. Her name's, uh--"
"Danni Harper?"
"Right. Yes. Well, she's new. So be nice. You can, uh, go and sit down now."
"Thanks."

She rolled her eyes and turned to face the class, scanning the rows of seats. There were plenty of spaces, but they were all very close to other students, and Danni wasn't really in the mood for socializing. Sighing, she made her way to the very back of the class, to sit at the end of an empty row. All around her, heads turned and students contemplated her with raised eyebrows and confused expressions, but she was well used to it by now. Sitting down, she rested her chin on the palm of her hand and watched with an amused expression as, one by one, the rest of the class lost interest and turned to face the front.

Lucas looked up as the classroom door slowly swung open, he watched as the new student was introduced to the class. Craning his neck to get a better look. Sitting at the back of the classroom was Lucas's preference but it did have it disadvantages. Watching as she walked from the front of the classroom right to the very back. Lucas's blue eyes canned over her for a moment as she sat down a seat away from him. Smirking to himself he played with his snakebites, this school could do with a change even if she wasn't that interesting. Maybe something would happen.

Danni pushed the doors to the cafeteria open and joined the queue, sighing as she did so. The first few lessons had been a total bore; God knows what she would have to deal with after the lunch hour. Her parents had always encouraged her to enjoy her time in school, to learn what she could and excel in her subjects, but Danni had never seen the point. It was school, and she was a permanent teenager - she couldn't understand why they expected her feel anything but hatred toward the place.

She grabbed a random sandwich off the counter without really taking care to read the label and paid for it, pushing her way through the crowd toward the seats. A quick once-over of the cafeteria told her all the places that she wouldn't be allowed to sit; as the new girl, she'd have to work extra hard if she wanted to have earned a place on most of the tables by the end of the week. She rolled her eyes. Typical. A girl on one of the more 'popular'-looking tables smiled somewhat coldly, while her friend glared at the boy sitting beside her, who was winking in Danni's direction.

Shaking her head, she pointedly avoided everyone's gaze and headed for the table in the furthest corner of the cafeteria, which was empty. From experience, she knew that if any space was free this far into Lunch it was likely to remain so, which meant that there was no reason for her to have to talk to anyone for the remainder of the hour. Throwing her bag to the floor and sitting down, she pulled the sandwich - which turned out to contain cheese - out of its box and began pulling it to pieces. She didn't feel like eating today, and there was no reason to; she didn't have any 'friends' to take notice of what she did or didn't do.

One of the boys in her class walked in, and she found herself watching him with mild curiosity. She'd chosen to sit near to him in Form, mainly because he seemed to be paying her about as much attention as she was paying him, and he didn't have the look of someone who just randomly talked to people. She tilted her head to the side slightly as she contemplated him - he was quite attractive, she decided. He glanced her way suddenly, probably feeling her gaze on him, and she flashed him a quick smile before returning her attention to the sandwich in front of her. Hmm.

Lucas walked into the cafeteria, joing the qeue picking up a bottle of water he looked around. Flicking his hair he noticed the new girl from form and some off his classes siting on her own. Ignoring the calls from his friends to join him on there table waving them off. walking up to the table he smiled lightly "hey..Danni right? mind if i sit here?" he say motioning down.

"Hey.. Danni right? Mind if I sit here?"

Danni looked up somewhat grudgingly as an unfamiliar voice broke her concentration on slowly but surely shredding her cheese sandwich, and was surprised to find herself looking into the clear blue eyes of the boy she'd almost sat with in form. Well, apparently her assumption that he wasn't the kind of person to just talk to people had been wrong. Despite her initial impulse to reject him in the cruellest manner possible and send him away, she felt compelled to allow him to stay; she stared at him for a few moments with a completely blank expression while she struggled to reach a decision, but eventually shrugged indifferently and gestured toward the seat opposite her. "Sure, if you want."

Calmly pushing the chunks of her now thoroughly destroyed cheese sandwich back into the box, she raised her gaze to meet his and watched him thoughtfully. What had compelled him to come over to her? Had it been the fact that he'd caught her watching him when he'd entered the cafeteria, and thought she was attracted to him? She raised an eyebrow. He was attractive, she had to admit that, but there was no point in actually being attracted to him - he was human, she'd only end up slaughtering him and his family. She raised the eyebrow further. Not that she had a problem with that... She made her decision quickly, and rearranged her features into the warmest smile she could manage. "So, what's your name?"

Danni whirled around, alarmed and angered, as she felt someone crash into her, and seized the careless idiot by the shoulders. "Lucas?" she gasped, surprised to see him standing before her for the second time that day. She released him quickly and took a step backwards, flashing her best attempt at an apologetic smile. "God, sorry. You scared me." Her eyes searched his face for signs that her reaction to their collision had caused him any alarm, and it soon became apparent to her just how agitated he seemed.

She'd always been able to read people, which was deemed a good thing - flirt a little, get them to talk about their feelings, and suddenly they're a very willing target - but as she acknowledged the tension behind his eyes, she felt a rather unusual twinge of concern pulling at her heart. Shrugging it off, she decided to follow through with her usual routine, while at the same time extremely satisfied with the knowledge that taking this route would get her the answers that, for some reason, she desperately wanted. "Hey... Are you okay? You seem a bit... Off."

Lucas gave out a small squeak of surprise as Danni grabbed him, when she asked im if he was okay he nodded quickly "y-yeah..im fine..listen i need to go i'll talk to you on monday." he said in a huge rambled and walked quickly down the street turning to get to his street.

A few minutes later he arrive at his house, taking a shaky breath he wiped his eyes that had already started to water. Putting his hand on the cold handle he pushed down letting himself inside.

"LUCAS! Is that you? A deep voice filled his ears.
"Y-Yeah..its me" he mumbled.

A tall man with black hair holding a bottle of wishky sauntered towards him. "Your early..."he said looking Lucas up and down.
"half day remember i told you last night"
"i dont remember you telling me, your probably lying, you cut from school havent you" his father said stepping closer grabing Lucas by the scruff of his shirt, forcing him into the door.
"No, i'm not lying..i-i-im telling the truth really" Lucas said tearfully.
" dont lie to me Lucas!" his father hissed grabbing Lucas's hair pulling it upwards.

Giving a sort yelp in pain Lucas knew he wasn't going to win in an argument againsts his father. " i-i didn't" he wispered, but he was met by a slap across the face brandishing him with a sering red mark on his face.

"Get out of my sight you worthless little cretin!" His father shouted pushing him up the stairs. Lucas stumbled up the stairs, finnaly getting to the safety of his room, Pushing the wodden dresser in front of the door he sat on his bed his hands running over his face and hair, feeling a tear run down his cheek he sighed shakily. It was going to be a long weekend.

Danni frowned at Lucas' retreating figure; she wasn't convinced by his hasty reassurances and babbled excuses to leave. Waiting for him to put enough distance between them, she glanced around the street and started after him, pausing a little way from his house in order to give him a chance to get in. As much as she hated to admit it, she was worried about him, and not knowing what it was that was making him so jumpy was driving her mad. After a minute or two, she approached the door he had disappeared behind and knocked.

A tall man with a dark expression glared at her from the doorway, and she smiled back as brightly as she could. "Hey, is Lucas in?"
"Who are you?"
"I'm Danni."
"Girlfriend?"
"Friend. Sort of."
"From?"
"School."
The man, apparently Lucas' father, shrugged. "Never heard him mention you."
"You wouldn't have. I'm new."
"Whatever."
"So can I see him?" she pushed, getting annoyed.
"No. He's not in."

Danni raised her eyebrows as the door was replaced, rather suddenly, in its frame. Well, she wasn't having that. There was definitely something wrong, but what? One thing was for certain - she wasn't about to let having a door slammed in her face stop her from finding out. Shrugging, she made her way round to the back of the house, looking for a way to get in without being noticed by Lucas' father. Glancing up at the house, she could see Lucas himself through the gap in the curtains in the top left window, and she looked around for some way of getting his attention. Her gaze fell on the boarder that ran round the perimeter of the garden - full of limestone chips. She couldn't help the smile that spread across her features as she picked some up and started throwing them with surprising precision at his windowpane.

*kerchink*....*kerchink*

Lucas looked over at the window as someone was obviuosly trying to get his attention. Walking over to the window he looked down to see Danni standing in front of his window. opening it he looked behind him wipping his eyes quickly. Sticking his head out of the window. "Danni, what are you doing here?" he said. "If my dad finds out he'll.... well it wont be nice" he added his voice breaking slightly as he gave another look behind him.

Danni watched Lucas with a critical expression. He seemed more than surprised that she was there - he seemed wary, scared even. What was that about? "Well..." she began, smiling wryly in an attempt to lighten the situation. "I saw you blow your friends off, so I know you've got nothing planned for the evening, and I wouldn't mind having someone show me round the area." Of course, that last part wasn't necessarily true; her family had been here before, a few decades ago. "That, and you look like you could use some fun. I did try knocking, but your dad said you weren't in. Yet here you are. So you coming?" She gestured toward the garden gate, a challenging look in her eyes. "Or are you scared Daddy'll catch you?"

***

Danni pushed her hands deeper into her pockets, pulling her jacket closer around herself. Although the weather had more or less no effect on her, she could tell by the people they passed that it was cold, and she had to at least appear normal. Plus, she realised, being 'cold' might give her an excuse to move closer to Lucas. She instantly reprimanded herself for thinking that; she'd already reached the subconscious decision that he was more than just a meal now - he was a conquest.

She smiled at him as they made their way down the street. She didn't have a clue where they were going, and she doubted whether he did, but she was content just walking with him. Maybe if they walked far enough, she'd be able to get some information about the situation at home out of him. Clearing her throat, she slowed her pace considerably and met his gaze with curious and concerned eyes. "So you gonna tell me what that was all about? First your dad said you weren't in and shut the door in my face, and then you acted like a rabbit caught in the headlights at the prospect of him finding out I was still there. Are you not allowed to have girls over?" She raised her eyebrow coyly, but then continued in a much more serious voice. "You can talk to me, you know. I know we've only just met but I'm worried about you, and I want to help." Without thinking about it, she slipped her hand into his and gave it a comforting squeeze; a soft smile came to her lips as she looked into his eyes. Whether she liked it or not, she realised, she really did mean everything she was saying.

Lucas looked at Danni as she made eye contact with him, he suddenly felt like he could tell her anything he wanted and it wouldn't have mattered. But when she put her hand into his he sighed feeling tears in his eyes. Shaking her hand away from his he leant against a wall. "he- he's...i can't Danni he'll kill me...i just can't alright?" he said his voice breaking and becoming teary. Turning around he faced the wall resting his head on the brickwork.

Sniffing back the tears he sighed heavily "he's hitting me..among other things" he finally confessed rolling up one of his long sleeves, revealing deep coloured bruises and scratches.

Danni inhaled sharply, bringing a hand to her mouth, as Lucas uncovered some rather nasty bruises along his arm and admitted that his father had been hitting him. "Jesus..." She'd seen some pretty bad things in her time, but this was appalling. Forcing herself to look away from his arm, her gaze flickered to his, and she reached out to him, taking both his hands in hers and lacing her fingers through his. "Lucas, this isn't good. Isn't there someone you can tell? Anyone. Where's your mom? You can't just suffer in silence, you know. You have to do something about it." And if you won't, I will, she added silently.

She was overcome by an unnecessary urge, such as she'd never experienced before, to protect him. Incomprehensible anger that anyone - especially his father - could do something like this to such a beautiful boy surged through her, and she found herself imagining knocking on his front door again, and this time ripping the man's throat out before he had the chance to send her away. The sudden desire to defend this boy - who had started out as nothing more than something challenging for her to chase - greatly troubled her, but all the same she couldn't help but embrace the sensation.

Squeezing his hands again, she looked up at him, the calm expression on her face totally contradicting the burning rage she felt within. She knew now that this was no longer about the thrill of the chase; for the first time in her very long existance she felt a connection with a human so different to the normal hunter-hunted bond. The ground she was stepping on was new and unfamiliar - but exciting.

" my mom divorced him when i was 12 but she couldn't get custody of me so dad took me to his house and then when the trouble started he said it was my fault that they were no longer together so he took it out on me" Lucas said quietly his eyes filling with tears again cascading them down his cheecks. Looking at Danni's hands he sighed queitly. "he said he'll kill me if i ever told anyone, and belive me he's capable of it" he added looking down at the floor.

Again, the image of herself standing over Lucas' father, watching with sheer contempt as his lifeblood drained onto the floor, filled Danni's mind, but she tried her best to push the thoughts away. Lucas was a mess, only getting worse as he went into further detail about what was happening to him at home. She sighed. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have dragged you out here. I really didn't think..." She trailed off. What had she thought? It was clear to anyone that something was greatly amiss in that house, and she was supposed to be able to read people, so why hadn't she seen just how bad it was?

Reaching up, she brought a hand to his face, lightly caressing his cheek with her thumb. "It's going to be okay," she told him, her voice soft. "I'm going to help you, I promise." How, she didn't know - all the scenarios she could come up with ended with his father's death - but she had to do something. She couldn't let him suffer like this.

Lucas closed his eyes as Danni put her hand on his cheek. It was soothing to have contact that didnt involve violence. "Thankyou" he wispered softly. Feeling his right pocket vibrate interupted the sympathetic moment, digging the phone out of his pocket the screen flashed in his face and his heart dropped at the caller: DAD. Opening his mouth to speak he made a pityfull squeak before swallowing a lump deep into his throat. "I need to go he knows ive left" Peeling Danni's hand of his cheek and walked away quickly.

- Lucas's house -

Opening the door Lucas whimpered nervously as he closed the door silently hoping that his dad didn't notice. But by then it was too late. Luacas was slammed into the door his head reverberating off the wodden door. His gaze was met by his fathers cold blue eyes, closing his eyes he braced himself for the impact of his closed fists.

After what must have been hours of painfull beating Lucas was forced into a small cupboard in the kitchen. "You'll stay in there!" His father growled as Lucas's body hit the concrete wall. "And to make sure you do.." He added clamping one of Lucas's hands to a pipe. Lucas graoned quietly as his eyes flutured closed slipping into peacfull unconcioussness.

- Monday -

"does anyone know where Lucas is?" the teacher asked looking up from the register, to look as his class mummered 'no' 's and other negative responses.

"Does anyone know where Lucas is?"

Danni looked up from her page of doodles, and glanced, surprised, to the seat next but one to her. She'd been sat in their form room for most of the morning, trying to block everyone out; she hadn't even noticed that Lucas wasn't in school. Looking up at the teacher, she shook her head as indifferently as she could, while fighting the urge to walk out of the school and go to find him. What had happened to him? He must've got into big trouble when he got home on Friday night. She shouldn't have dragged him out with her, she should've seen that it was a bad idea. Shaking her head, she silently cursed herself for being so stupid. And weak; she'd never have imagined herself feeling like this toward a human.

The next few hours passed in a blur of dates and titles that she only just managed to write down, and numerous teachers shouting at her for not paying attention, but at last the bell for Lunch rang and she made her way to the office to inform them that she was going home for the hour. After arguing with the aging receptionist for a good few minutes, Danni left the school and headed toward the bus stop.

***

Running up Lucas' driveway, she paused to collect herself before knocking on his front door. She waited, but there was no movement, no sound, from within the house. She knocked again, louder this time, and this time there was the sound of footsteps and a gruff voice spoke from behind the door. "Who is it?"
Danni thought quickly. "Jehovah's Witness," she called cheerfully. Within theory, this should have made it very difficult for Lucas' father to refuse to open the door; even if he had no interest in Jehovah's Witnesses, she knew from experience that people very rarely passed up an opportunity to tell them to get off their property.

It worked. There was the click of a Yale lock and the door was pulled open, to reveal a very disgruntled looking Mr. Anderson. His eyes widened as he recognised Danni, and he made a noise similar to a growl. "You!" he snarled.
"Yes," she smiled. "I became religious."
"Get off my property."
"So is Lucas in?" she asked conversationally, leaning against the doorframe. The very strong smell of blood hit her in the face, and her eyes narrowed.
"Get off my property!" he repeated, raising his voice.
This annoyed Danni, and she placed her hands on his chest to give him a sharp shove as she stepped into the house. Mr. Anderson went for her, but she blocked his oncoming fist and another heave on his chest had him flying toward the stairs and smacking his head on the banister. There was a groan as he slid to the floor, but although he was unconscious she didn't seem to have done him any serious damage. She sighed. Now to find Lucas.

She followed the smell of blood into the kitchen, half expecting to find Lucas tied to a chair or something, but the room was empty. She looked around, listening intently. Back in the hall, she could tell his father was still safely unconscious, but she could hear... Breathing. Deep, slow, rhythmic breathing, coming from a cupboard. A cupboard? Surely not... But she had to check. Crossing the kitchen quickly, she pulled open the door of a small cupboard that looked just big enough to fit a person inside and choked back an outcry of horror. Lucas was slumped against the back of it, apparently unconscious. Fighting back the temptation to return to the hall and finish his father off, she seized him by his shoulders and dragged him onto the kitchen floor, dropping to her knees beside him. "Lucas?" she hissed urgently, shaking him. "Lucas are you alright? Can you hear me?"

Lucas head was filled with the sound of a familiar voice the sound was mufled at first, but the sound finnaly came through clearly.
"Lucas?...Lucas, Are you allright? Can you hear me?

Forcing his eyes open he squinted as natural light finnally hit his eyes. It took his eyes a while to focus before Danni came into hazy view. Coughing roughly he gasped in pain.
"Danni?" He groaned trying to lift his head up but ended up crying out in pain as a razor sharp schook ran through his neck and shoulders. His body tensed painfully and untensed as he let out another groan. His body was plauged in cuts and bruises, some cuts deep still oozing the sticky red substanse. His clothes were saturated in dark patches of blood and his body burned with every slight movement. He had been in the confined cupboard for three whole days his father only coming in to beat him to the edge of councioussness.

Grabbing onto Danni's hand he wispered "Please help me Danni i can't stay here anymore....i-...if you hadn't've found me....i'd probably be dead. But please..get me out of here" He begged gropping onto her hand like it was a rope to heaven.

Danni was somewhat taken aback as Lucas clutched at her arm, begging her to help him, but she understood. She knew she couldn't leave him there, not knowing that he would get the beating of his life when his father eventually came back round. "It's okay," she assured him, pulling him to his feet and winding an arm around his waist in an attempt to support him. "You're okay. He's not touching you." She knew she probably sounded a little too sure of her words - after all, what power did a mere seventeen year old girl have over such a dire situation? - but she didn't care. As far as she was concerned, Lucas' father didn't have a hope in Hell of ever laying a finger on him again.

***

After some thought and a lot of inner conflicts, Danni had decided that it would be best to take Lucas back to her house - without informing her family first. No doubt her parents would object to having a human in their home, especially considering it had been so difficult for her 'younger brother' to control himself around people since they'd moved, but she didn't care. This needed doing, Lucas needed to be kept away from his father, and this seemed the best way to do so.

She twisted the key in the lock and pushed the door open, calling out as she did so. A male voice answered from somewhere toward the back of the house, asking her why she was home so early. Danni smiled and stood aside to let Lucas in, leading him into the living room and telling him to make himself comfortable before walking through into the kitchen.
"Hey Dad," she smiled, sitting on the countertop and plucking a leaf off a plant on the windowsill.
Danni's dad turned from the washing machine to wave at her absentmindedly and tell her, again, that she was early.
"I know," was her response as she absentmindedly began to shred the leaf. "I came home for lunch. Look, Dad..."
He tensed at her tone, and straightened up slowly. "What..?"
"I need to talk to you." She explained about Lucas and his situation, carefully leaving out her growing feelings toward him, and flinched when she saw the thunderous look on her father's face.

He was still shouting as she closed the kitchen door behind her, made her way back into the living room, and turned to Lucas, smiling brightly. "He said you can stay as long as you need to."
