2253. Jason felt the clamps holding the entry vessel dislodge and a slight jerk as its engines booted up. He felt the pull on his suit as the ship began to accelerate, clearing the docking bay doors. He glanced at the main display of his cockpit and with the tap of a button brought up a 3D holographic display of the landing force leaving the colony. The atmospheric entry ships were represented with little green isosceles triangles pointed towards the direction of earth. Funny how over 200 lives could be represented with such simple shapes. He shifted in his seat a bit, the trip was going to take at least 12 hours and he wanted to be comfortable.

2300. All the ships had cleared the colony. He looked at his tac-map again and noted the positions of each of the carriers. Half of them were marked with a black circle, signifying they were on alert already. His was one of them. If they encountered any trouble along the way he wanted to be able to at least defend the majority of the landing force. He updated the combat alert orders for the black-circle marked ships and sat back satisfied for the moment. He flicked the comm-channel on and began to listen to the chatter of the men. He tuned through various frequencies till he came to the officer’s channel. The conversation filled his ears, it was Coprulu talking.

Coprulu:
"…so then I tells’ im’ “I will pound you into the ground you slimy earth-scum!” and the little punk just backs off like that! I tell ya’ earth soldiers are wimps."

Loud laughter broke out over the channel and Jason couldn’t help but join in. It was good to hear the boys talking so lighthearted, and considering the length of the flight he didn’t see any reason to dissuade them from chatting. But the truth was earth soldiers were far from wimps, he liked to think they weren’t as good as his colonial boys but you could never underestimate someone defending their home, the earth had done that before and look where it had led them. He chimed into the channel.

Jason:
"Yeah and then I bet he went and got some of his buddies and you booked it Coprulu! Earth soldiers may be wimps but for a colonial you’re pretty weedy!"

Laughter broke out again over the comm-channel and Coprulu stammered and tried to recover. Jason chuckled to himself and let the conversation take its course. He mused over the upcoming mission and considered how much he would have to revise his plan. No use worrying about it now, when there was nothing he could do but wait. He had the men list off by squadron and checked to make sure his entire force was there. He would need to ramp up the schedule, the attack had to e much faster than he had originally planned. He would have his men move in before 1800 if at all possible. The worst part was the waiting, the long flight to earth, the rocky entry. He sighed and closed his eyes, drifting off to a light sleep.

1437. He awoke with a start and realized one of his men had pinged him. It was First Sgt. Kaliah, alerting him to the impending transmission of new information. He checked his clock and noted the time. Yes the intelligence should be arriving soon. He stretched as much as he could in the cramped cockpit and brought up his communications grid, he checked fro transmissions from High Command but found none, perhaps it was a little early yet. He flipped through the comm-channels again and noted that most of the men had gone to sleep. Good at least they would be rested for the battle ahead. He rubbed his jaw and stretched a kink in his neck and brought his suit out of sleep mode and began running systems checks again. He just hoped the new info would be useful.

At precisely 1500 hours just moments before the transport ships were about to break Earth's atmosphere over Africa, an encrypted file was laser beamed directly from the L01 colony to the lead shuttle along with a set of coordinates for the guidance systems to begin following for precise navigation to destination. This file contained the following data:
Weather:
"Global climate scans indicate that weather is stable in north west Africa. Currently, the region is experiencing a month-long drought which is expected to continue for three more weeks. Sand storms plague the desert regularly - expect heavy winds and dust storms on landing. South of the base is known to be a dead zone filled with quick sand. Temperatures at landing will average 100 degrees and rapidly decrease to 70 degrees over the next hour from 1800 hours as the sun sets. The Lake Victoria base presumably receives its water from an oasis named "Lake Victoria" two kilometers to the west."

Troop movement:
"The base appears to have roughly 30 mobile suits out at any given time on training operations that we have observed taking place at all hours of the day. Recent scans have shown that a large supply of Aries suits lies in the Eastern most Hanger. We have also noted several Leos and tanks. The other two hangers still remain unknown, but is presumed to house more Leos and Tanks. The estimated number of opposing forces is assumed to exceed 300 active mobile units, however ground penetrating sensors failed to reach further than 20 feet underground around the base for unknown reasons. We have located and identified 8 laser class turrets along the perimeter of the base which are identified in the new map uploaded to your ship's navigation systems. This map should replace the ones your fleet is currently using.

The second drop ship fleet has left the L03 Colony and is proceeding on schedule to the extraction point. From now till extraction, we will keep silent on all channels for security purposes.

Good luck,
- L01 Military Command"

1515. Jason perused through the new tac data silently, the information scrolling slowly on several holographic displays in his cockpit. Sand could be a problem but it wasn't likely, his biggest concern were the eight laser turrets on the perimeter of the base, they would have to be destroyed ASAP to have the assault work. This was going to be tricky... all but the two western lasers would have to go down, and the northern ones wouldn't be a problem until extraction time. He checked his plan again and peeled four Taurus' off his command group, they would go north to take out the two laser turrets guarding their exit. He started to enter in the new command data, having two bazookas from force A and two from force B coordinate their attacks to hit the turrets at the same time. The northern ones would be handled by the extra Taurus'. He rapped his finger on the transmit button and sent the revised orders to his men. It was now 1603, approximately one and a half hours till touchdown. Jason leaned into his comm and flicked it on.

""Gentlemen we have just over and hour till we hit sand, and I want all of you in tip top shape, Squad Leaders wake up anyone sleeping still, review your specific orders with your units and report to me if you have any questions. Be aware of possible sand storms, temperature shouldn't be a problem, stay away form the western side of the base. Targets are now pinged on your tac-maps, colored in order of priority, I've taken the time to try and fill in known troop locations. Hellan out.""

1645. When the new orders had gone out the men had finally learned squad make ups and force assignments. Jason had deliberately waited this long so that combat relevant data couldn't be intercepted or subject to the politics some of his officers might have amongst themselves. He went through the personnel list and attempted to familiarize himself with the names he didn't know, which was very few. He sighed and wondered how many families he would have to visit after the battle, he never let anyone other than himself break the news that their son or daughter had died in battle, that was a right and a responsibility he felt, as their commanding officer, was his to perform.

1700. The ship had begun to rock slightly as they began to scrape along the surface of the atmosphere. The rocking became more violent as they pierced the out surface of the earths atmosphere and shot towards Africa. The heat shields on the AEV's shot open and red-white plumes of fire burned around them, creating streaks in the sky, reminiscent of shooting stars. He heard the hiss of heavily coolants seeping to the front of the vessel to lower their heat signature and to dissipate the plumes of fire. When they finally broke fully into open air the outer carapaces of the ships jettisoned off and they assumed an atmospheric flight mode. The pilot of his vessel informed him they were ahead of schedule by about 15 minutes, and would be arriving at their LZ in less than a half an hour.

Jason:
""All units, prepare for landing! Run your final diagnostics and lose your harnesses, all teams prep your weapons, lock and load boys this is it!""

1720. Red warning klaxons sounded inside every mans cockpit as they signaled their arrival at the LZ, the hiss of automatic clamps disengaging mobile suits sounded throughout the ships and the sharp pings of metal reverberated inside. Jason glanced at his tac-map and saw green confirmation lights blinking on the ships who had delivered their payload of MS'. He heard the mechanical whine of the bottom ports opening on his ship and checked his below-view camera to see the sandy desert floor just a few meters beneath him. Exhaust pipes hissed and snapped off, writhing like headless snakes, then he felt the heavy jolt of the docking clamps disengaging and he hung there for a moment, suspended by a magnetic carrier. He punched the green go-button and the magnet shut off, letting his Serpent plummet out of the bottom of the ship to impact the desert floor with a puff of sand.

Jason:
""All units report! I want full confirmations and tac assesments!""

Green confirmation lights blinked form every Squad Leader and he saw the light signaling an incoming transmission from one of his men, the ID was the Leo Commander, Coprulu who had pinged him.

Jason:""What is it? A contact?""

Corpulu"
""Yes sir, I can't quite tell exactly what it is but my scanner unit picked it up about a half a klick from here, I sent a team to check it out, they'll hit the spot right about... now. It looks like an MS team but I'm not sure, could be false pings. If it's fake pings then we have to move ASAP because it'll probably transmit to the base if it picks up our inspection team.""

Jason cursed slightly and sent an acknowledgment ping to Coprulu then turned to face his men, he accepted all the tac reports from his quad leaders and waited to hear from Coprulu's investigation unit.

Three Virgo suits were dug in under a pile of sand. Their brown camouflage paint was chipping indicating that they had been there for a while now, and through several sandstorms. They were deactivated to ensure that they could not be detected by long range scanners. The thick sand protected them from long range radar. When the squad of Leos approached, the lead Virgo activated and slowly lifted itself out of the sand to reveal its location. To prevent hostilities, an immediate hail was sent from the Virgo to the Leos under a known protected wavelength used by Space Imperial Nations.
Xander:"This is Corporal Xander, Black Ops division 6 on undercover recon operations in this area."
Two more Virgos emerged from the sands behind Xander's location. Another two rose out the sands on top of a small dune a few meters to the east. Sand drifted off nearly every crevice of the mobile suits as they converged on the Leo's position in a slow walk with their weapons down. Their vents ejected steam to clean out the sand.
Xander:"We were deployed to survey the Lake Victoria base when the war began. My squad and I have orders are to provide you with the information we've gathered and aid you in the assault. We're uploading the updated tactical maps and known mobile suit locations now."
A series of maps flooded into the Leo's computer systems. In addition to what was already known, they revealed additional pop-up laser turrets scattered around the perimeter of the base hidden underneath the sands; a total of 16 were around the perimeter, 4 on each side. Five groups of three Leos patrol around the perimeter at any given time as well as three groups of three Aries suits patrolling the air. The base was fortified by 40 foot tall concrete walls. The center of the base had a dome that is fitted with two concealed rotating cannons that fired massive 13 inch shells. The survey indicated the base had roughly 400 mobile suits currently active, and 12 barracks around the massive base that held a total of about 1,200 pilots and personnel. The maps also showed that the Eastern side housed most of the barracks (totaling eight in all on the eastern side), two of which were confirmed as pilots barracks and marked in red on the maps.

1724. The comms flared and Jason's Serpent received the new data from the Black Ops team, he confirmed the intel and over mapped his current tac-maps. He recalled the investigation unit and asked the Black Ops unit to meet him half a klick from the perimeter defenses of the base, he checked his clock, 1730, half an hour till they had to move.

Jason:
"Welcome to my little force, Corporal, please fall in with my unit. Your tactical information is a great help, and a few extra suits wouldn't be a bad thing on this mission. Alright boys listen up, heres the new plan, we have 10 EMP shells, which we'll use to disable the perimeter laser turrets on the south and east sides, Leo's with bazookas will take out the laser turrets with coordinated strikes, I want them taken out quickly and efficiently, my team will handle both patrols, we move ay 1750 so all of you need to be in position on time, from now on we go by call-signs only, keep contact to tight-band radio, squad members relay communiques to my second, he'll let me know if it's important."

Green acknowledgment lights pinged from all his squad leaders and the unit roster automatically updated to include Xander's Virgos. The force split into units, a third of them heading south to take up positions at the southern entrance of the base. Jason had his portion maneuver just outside the range of perimeter defenses and ordered four units on standby to hit the marked cannon turrets with EMP shells.

1738. He got the signal from his second that all units were in position. He sighed and sat back, his face emotionless. He dug into a small pocket sewn on the inside left breast of his uniform and produced a picture of a beautiful flame-haired woman. The photograph was faded and worn form being folded over and over but the face was still easily identifiable. He held the picture up and pinned it to the edge of his display. She always smiled... "Rachel..." All the times he left for battle she had waited for him to return, and now, in the end he was the one that would never see her again. Ironic.

He closed his eyes and leaned back. The crash had been a disaster, the shuttle had impacted into the hangar of the colony at ten times the maximum landing speed. The explosion was enormous and the whole area had been turned into an inferno. When the fire was finally put out by the emergency response team all that was left of the shuttle were chunks of scorched metal and badly charred bodies. The ID had been impossible until DNA samples were used. She had gone on vacation to earth, the same earth he was about to invade. Ironic.

1745. All units pinged in one by one. The entire force was in position. The 5 minute wait was going to be hell. Jason racked the slide on his rifle and Virgo's all checked the power supply links on the beam cannon packs. He shifted his Serpent slightly and edged it forward to get a better view of the base. The top level was highly symmetrical. Two main defense turrets on each side of the main gate, in the center of the compound was an enormous dome topped with two huge cannons. The dome probably stretched far underground, where two of the targets were. Four groups of three barracks occupied each corner of the base and the entire compound was ringed by a 40 foot wall. The faint lumps of the hidden sand turrets could be identified about 50 meters from the main wall. He surmised the underground entrance was through the dome.

Lake Victoria Base: Command and Control Center

The small, dimly lit room was walled with computer panels and a huge communications station occupied on corner. In the center of the room a large black table stood, with six chairs around it. Men in United Earth Sphere Alliance military uniforms sat lounging in office chairs around the table and at the various computers. They seemed relaxed and the mood was light. The men at teh table were chatting good naturedly. A Captain Raames was speaking.

Raames:
"... So then the colonial son of a bitch whips his pistol right? And I'm thinkin' 'what a dumb bastard, he's in the middle of UEA territory,' he was wearin' that stupid blue rookie uniform and he has the dumb idea to pull his piece on me, when I'm with my girlfriend no less! So you know what I did? Grabbed his damn peashooter, ripped it outta' his sweaty little hands and shoved it in his face and I said 'You better get the hell back to your colony boy, before I whip you into shape, don't come down to my home and threaten my wife, I see your face again I'll rip you a new one.' And the little bugger up an' leaves.

Laughter mixed with applause reverberated throughout the control room. Raames was a fit man, about 5'10'', dark complexion and equally dark hair. He was also the resident ace M.S. pilot. The Captain took another sip of his beer and laughed at a poor joke from one of the other officers. Lieutenant Reese had the floor now.

Reese:
Thank God I haven't got any of those asses from space in my hometown. I'd hate to have to confront one in front of my little girl, she's only six. My wife swears she has my eyes. I just want this damn alert to be lifted so I can see my two lovely ladies again. Ey' who all misses home, boys?

It was a simultaneous response as every man in the CCC attested their desire to get back home. The rest of the men in teh room were all either controllers, technicians or the Commanders of the base. Colonel Carpentier held sway over this bastion of UEA power in Africa and he had commanded the base excellently for several years. The truth was with Sin dead, retribution from the colonies was almost a certainty, and Lake Victoria had been put on Medium Alert. If Raames was the resident ace Reese held a close second. Reese produced a picture out of the breast pocket of his uniform and passed it around. A beautiful young woman held up a small girl on her shoulder, both were waving at the camera and smiling broadly.

Epsilon Unit: Jason's Serpent

1749. Jason hit the yellow ping, the signal to line-up targets. He watched his tac-map auto-update as the eight hidden turrets and the 4 defense turrets they were engaging were highlighted read, indicating they had been target painted. Jason flitted his Serpent closer and picked out the patrols he had to engage in his viewfinder. Perfect timing, they were about to pass each other and he could hit both at one time. Jason placed the picture of Rachel up on his display and stuck into the seam of a corner, he smiled sadly and returned his attention to the task at hand. He raised his rifle and trained it on the lead Leo.

1750. Go-light. Ear shattering explosions shuddered through the ground as 40 Leos let loose with their Bazookas and eight EMP shells were launched at the hidden turrets. The impact of 40 Bazooka rounds slamming into the four main defense turrets was devastating. All four turrets crumbled instantly and massive explosions ripped chunks of the wall. The hidden sand turrets sat lifeless as the EMP shells fried their internal workings.

Jason squeezed the trigger and sent a burst out of his rifle straight into the patrol leader's Leo cockpit. Rending steel drowned out the brief scream the man let out as 105mm shells tore him limb from limb. Jason punched the controls and his Serpent shot off straight towards the patrols. His unit sped off right behind him, beam cannons send arcs of bright yellow light into the doomed patrol unit. One Leo had it's leg shorn off then the head smashed in. Another took a beam straight to the chest, literally disintegrating the pilot along with a good portion of the Mobile Suit's torso. Jason trained his rifle on another Leo and punched it full of holes, sending it tumbling backwards over the wall of the base. Three of the five patrol units had been neutralized in a matter of seconds. Jason brought up his tac-map again and sent a ping to his men signaling them to jump the wall and head straight in with him. He checked on the status the other two forces assaulting the gates. Force A, under Coprulu was just breaching the eastern gate, but Force B, under Arguile, had met staunch resistance, not only had the remaining two Leo patrol units been at the gate but two of the three Aries support units were there also.

Jason:
Arguile! Get your ass in gear, you have two minutes to breach that gate, you understand me? What's that? I don't give a damn if all the Leo's and Aries on the damn planet are fighting you, TWO MINUTES!

Jason punched his jets and him and his unit landed inside the compound just as Coprulu broke through the easter gate defenses. He smiled and sent a burst through an Aries bearing down on him. The shells impacted on the Aries' turb-fans and it went careening into a parked APC, lighting both vehicles on fire.

Jason:
Burn it all boys! Show no mercy for you shall be given none! Remember priority targets, hit the topside barracks then we head inside! And will someone peg those damn 13 inch cannons?

Lake Victoria: CCC

1800. For lack of any other better term, all hell had broke loose. Warning klaxons roared through the air and the soft light of the computer screens had been replaced with the glaring red of alert flashers. Men scrambled to computer stations as orders were barked and explosions caused vibrations through the room.

Raames:
What the hell is going on? Reese get to your damn suit! Give me a status report, I'll be in my Virgo in two minutes! Someone find the Colonel!

Raames and Reese both took off at a dead sprint out of the underground CCC and into the M.S. hangar. Both men ran to their respective mobile suits and jumped in. Emergency prep had already been done and the boot-up sequence took less than 20 seconds. Several other units had started to mobilize and a platoon sized force of Leos was already heading out of the hangar and up the ramp that lead to the surface. Raames sent alert pings from his cockpit to the CCC and then proceeded to make for the exit ramp, he sent a comm. to Reese.

Raames:
"Remeber boy, keep your head about you, anyone attacking this base is either a suicidal idiot or a brilliant soldier, and when it comes to Sin's men it's usually the latter. All units, move out! We got some colonist bastards to take care of, you ain't gonna let em invade your home are ya? You ain't gonna let em' set one damn foot on Earth!"

1804. The UEA soldiers acknowledged their will to fight with a loud cheer and La Salle, the commander of the Leo contingent stationed at Lake Victoria, along with the Leos, hit the jets on their suits and shot out of the underground hangar. They arrived topside to find the base in a state of utter chaos. Screams filled the air as one of the squads from Force A began to pump rounds into the northwestern barracks compound. La Salle trained his beam cannon on the lead Taurus and incinerated it's torso in one clean shot.

La Salle:
"Take that you colonial son of a bitch! Fan out, protect the barracks, they CANNOT get inside the dome, understand? Remember boys, these assholes threatened our homes, insulted our wives and now they're killing our comrades!"

At his words the intensity of the defenders determination increased dramatically. As the Leos surfaced they took up firing positions around the entrance of the dome and took aim. They unleashed their volleys in unison and shells bombarded the men of the attack force, a few Leos were punched off their feet by sheer volume of fire and a Taurus was hit in the boosters, causing it to careen into a building, engulfing both in a bright orange fireball. The momentum of the attack visibly lessened.

Jason:
There! That's the dome entrance, all units converge on this location, Coprulu send a detachment to clear our exit to the north, the rest of you with me! We assault that position and I'll be damned if some UEA punk who thinks he knows how to pilot a mobile suit is going to stop us! Let's show the soldiers of Earth what we're really made of!

1810. As Jason's force took up firing positions behind what little cover they could locate inside the compound Raames and Reese both came out the back entrance of the dome leading a small force of Taurus suits. They shlid as silently as possible away from the dome before doubling back on the base and coming at the southern entrance, behind Coprulu's force. Raames had a poster of his girlfriend taped onto the upper right of his display and he blew it a kiss.

Raames:
"I'm comin' home for ya babe, after this worthless war is over, I'm comin' home."
