Activity? Hell no. Get it together!

Tips: 0.00 INK Postby Rin on Thu Jul 05, 2007 3:06 am

I try to be patient, but I am not a very patient person. It doesn't bother me that no one answers to my role play (maybe it's not a good role playing topic), but it DOES bother me that it gets 36 views and NO RESPONSE AT ALL.

It doesn't matter if many members of this site are very skilled, but when all these threads are dying, no activity except from one or two people...that's ridiculous. You all make very pretty and detailed elaborate posts...but it's not worth it when those posts come in every other day. Shorten your posts and keep a rp ALIVE. Do SOMETHING.

I can very well go to another site with less skilled members. I don't want to do that, but I will. When you join a forum, especially a rp forum, it's your responsibility to keep up with the rp you're in and see it through. It's your responsibility to get on and see what is happening. This is supposed to be fun. How can it be when people are treating it like a chore?

I know that there's not unlimited time in the day...but it doesn't take very long to make a simple post and keep an rp moving along. I'm going to give this place a few more days, but if not I'm killing off my character and moving on.
This is the challenge of writing. You have to be very emotionally engaged in what you’re doing, or it comes out flat. You can’t fake your way through this.

Hi Rin,

I can fully understand your frustration with the site. However there are some points to make, not everyone, and this includes some of our best writers, have at best intermittent access to the internet and some even more than me have less time available to post.

If it helps I looked at your RP it's an extremely good idea, I loved it, however I do not feel that I have anything that I could usefully contribute to it. I would not want to post something that doesn't meet my own quite exacting standards, and that would happen were I to try and contribute to something that I didn't fully relate to. Now you could say that that is what RP is all about but then as I keep telling people I am a terrible role player, but a slightly less bad writer.

Personally I contribute to what touches me on some level and leave things that do not. Don't make the mistake of thinking I am making a value judgement, I am not, I am making an emotional judgement, it's not that I think one game or idea is good and another is bad just that some fire my imagination and some don't.

I don't know what activity stats are available but I wouldn't be surprised that out of all the members of the site, there are probably not more than a handful that are regularly active.

I sometimes wonder if it is the very quality of some of the posts that stops some people contributing. It can be rather difficult to match up to some of the posts, I know I have trouble with that.

Looking at the games I am involved in, there are currently two of them one Continuing Legend has recently been kick started back to life and as I watch it is dying again. Two of the major contributors have almost no internet access a lot of the time so their posts are erratic the others seem to have simply given up. And the other The Almost Modern Fantasy seems to have ground down as well, people dived in with some great ideas and have simply stopped posting. I don't know if it is because they are no longer interested or have other demands on their time. I don't know.

If you do decide to join other places, and there is no reason not to, don't give up entirely on RPGateway because it is people like you with vision and ideas that we need to keep going.

Grim (The rather depressed now)

Sorry about the lack of activity, it's an issue we're working very hard at. (No, really.)

There's another topic about this, and I'd encourage participating there. There are a few items that if we can get everyone to do, we'll be in good shape.

Congratulations on topic number 2,500 though. :)

Grim, in regards to TAMF...

Saladin's a major poster there, and he's lost his internet access as well. He only gets it at work now, which is just enough to keep in touch, not enough to rp properly. =/

Best we can do there is encourage him to save up and get his internet working again.

Also keep in mind, it is the summer months, and people DO go on vacations and don't have internet access at that point (if not, only enough to check their e-mails), and you also have to figure in people getting summer jobs, potentially two of them, which cuts more into abilities to post on this website on a regular basis, even more than school does itself.

There could be other underlying issues as well, which potentially could be blamed on the fact addresses bots registered from were outright banned from being able to register again with that e-mail, and having the bot deleted. (That could potentially give the impression this is an "exclusive" website - despite the fact the registration is open). Perhaps, even, that RPers don't want to register because of the anti-bot filters in place (IE: Read the text on the GIF/JPG and input what it says into the box below as well as e-mail activation, though that may not actually be in place).

We may or may not see some activity picking up around the end of this month. Only thing we can do is attempt to draw people here and sit and wait it out. Lulls like this happen, though on some sites it is worse than others.

We're getting a good amount of real registrations, which is what we consider our conversion point. What we DO with those conversions is another matter - a good portion of people actually post a welcome topic, post once or twice, then never come back. This is where our "member retention" team needs to be working. Another portion never posts - and perhaps our member retention team should be hitting them, too.

Is the Member Retention Team actually happening? Like, officially? If so, I would like to be a part of it, though I'm not sure if this is the right place for it.

It's one of those (many) theoretical things, like many others, that I, as an admin, shouldn't have to directly start, and will drag my feet on doing personally until it becomes utterly necessary to deviate from my normal tasks.

In other words, git 'r' dun. Do it. All that jazz.
