Adam and Collett

Adam perched silently on the roof of an old forge house and peered a few feet off at the gates to the palace of Markridge. Horse drawn carriages seemed to arrive one after the other dressed in the vibrant colors of the rich and privileged as lords from all over the country made their appearance. It was the annual Grand Harvest Ball, a ball that appeared once a year at the end of Harvest in the fall. It was a great deal for merchants and farmers as it demanded a good portion of the best of their crops to honor the feast of the rich. Ironically it also meant the annual rise of the number of homeless in the city as they seem to rise from the woodworks in a final attempt to beg enough coin to find shelter for the coming winter.

Adam pulled his hood off in order to better see the situation below revealing his pale scarred face to the rising harvest moon, plump and full and silver. He had a smooth young face; a firm, strong jaw and moderate cheekbones. Dark stubble dusted his face growing thick along the edges of his jawline only to be cut by three prominent pale scars on the left side of his face that drew lines from his temple to the edge of his jaw. It was evident he had some sort of epic battle with a large beast in the wilds and managed to get away with his life. His cool steel eyes noted every guard stationed at the gates and around the wall that etched the grounds. He needed to get around to the rear entrance where the servants and musicians would be entering out of the way of the high classed guests. Getting in shouldn't be a problem for him, once he was inside the problem would be navigating the halls without getting caught by the guards. Adam rifled through the robes he wore over his belted leather armor. The quiver of arrows and bow strapped to his back clanked slightly but was masked completely by the sound of the carriages. A cold breeze brushed Adam's neck and exposed wrists as he pulled out a wrinkled scrap of parchment with a hand scribbled map and a few notes on it, the intel for the job. According to his source the Lady of Markridge owned a particular gem called the Dragon's Eye. A beautiful blazing rock with a blackened center that not only would fetch coins among jewelers but would capture the attention of sorcerers as well. It supposedly is able to contain ten times the amount of magic as many other well used gems. Twice as much as a diamond of equal size. Completely priceless and Adam's key to absolute fortune. Of course the Lord and Lady are completely unaware of its magical capabilities and had it cut to fit a gold broach and set on display in the Lady's private chambers in the Main Tower.

Adam pocketed the peice of parchment and pulled his hood back over his head, adjusting the quiver of arrows on his back, then he was gone moving swiftly from roof to roof, crouched low so as not to attract any attention, making his way to the rear entrance which was far less covered in guards.

Collett Moses

Collett had been given a notice earlier in the month that he was requested to play with a small band of musicians at the harvest ball. Being a middle class citizen he wasn't known the have the best of clothing, but for this occasion he saved up some money to pay for new strings for his Viol and some new clothes so that he would fit in just a bit more. The new clothes he wore included a white painter's shirt, that seemed to be rather stylish this year, not to mention it fit nicely. He wore a brown jacket over it, with golden buttons running up the sleeves and embroidered edges, along with a pair of regular black pants. Collett had already taken a liking to this outfit.

It was a lovely ball, this was certain. Collett watched the people dance from the back of a crowd with his Viol held up on his shoulder and his back to the the carved stone wall. He would smile politely when a lady would pass by, but overall he focused on his sheet music that sat on a small stand in front of him. Collett had played Viol for many years now, starting back from when he was given the instrument around the age of fourteen. He had always enjoyed music, maybe even more so than most, but tonight, he just wasn't in the mood. He felt as thought he should be enjoying himself, yet he was bored beyond belief.

Despite the upbeat music and the happy people, this evening could only be described as dull, to him, at least. He decided to try not to think about this, and appreciate this evening more. Besides, he had absolutely nothing better to do.

Adam strode smoothly up to the service gate and was greeted by a heavy gauntlet against his chest.

"What do you think you're doing? You can't go in through here." the guard said glaring down at him. " Musicians and servants only, you look like a rogue."

"And you look like a tired man. I have a pick-me-up for you if you let me past." Adam reached into an inner pocket of his robes and pulled out a small pouch of pale blue powder. "Blue Belle powder for the hard working man. Use it at the right time and it could make you look like a true hero, not some laze about guard dog." Adam gave the guard a crooked smile from under his hood and the man chuckled.

He hesitated then handed Adam a small pouch of coins. "Alright....you're on....I never saw you."

The guard pocketed the powder and crossed his arms and Adam was in. He slipped through the doors and down the service hall. He went through the kitchen unnoticed as cooks worked at full tilt to keep the feast flowing. He hesitated when he reached the ballroom and chanced a look inside. In another life perhaps he'd be one of those miserable upperclassmen too rich to be content with their lives. No, not Adam. He had better plans for his coin than balls and politics. His cool gray gaze moved over the party and hesitated on the musicians. He had to admit, the chose a better band to play this year. "Hmh..."

Adam left the scene as quick as he arrived moving quickly through the halls. It was easier once he left the wake of the party, all the guards and servants where focused on it, the rest of the palace was his to roam. He plucked a few favors here and there for himself but all the while he followed the map etched in his mind leading to the Lady's private quarters.

It wasn't until after the song ended that Collett had decided to take a break for a while. His hand had begun to cramp, and he decided to walk around. The other musicians paid no mind to him as he had begun to walk away, Viola and all. He had created a strap for his Viol with two pegs and a leather band (along with a thin sheath for his bow), which was very convenient, all he had to do was wear it like a sash over his shoulder. Collett carried on exiting the ballroom, the smell of food following him out.

The ballroom led out to a corridor, which he wasn't entirely sure that he was even allowed to be in. His Viola would tap against his back softly as he walked, his shoes tapping along the bare floors. The floors were made of dark wood and candles were displayed off the walls. At the end of the corridor was a door with black metal hinges and structured with finely cut would planks that seemed to blend with the floor.

Collett sighed, approaching the door at a slow and lazy pace. The door nob was larger than Collett's fist, which was rather surprising. He wondered how large somebody's hands might have to be for this to be a comfortable sized door nob. Collett shook his head and proceeded to open the door. On the other side was a hallway lined with guards, but certain people still seemed to pass through so Collett settled upon the idea that it might just be a common's hall, for caterers and the like. He walked into the hall hesitantly. He followed down it slowly, some people rudely pushing passed him and ladies getting in the way to stop and flirt with the on-duty guards. Collett huffed softly and passed another door which was open. He stopped himself and stepped back, looking down the empty hall. He started down it, luckily no one seemed to question him, since the Viola could be seen clearly on his back.

At that point Adam had found his way into the Lady's quarters and was rustling through the dressers for any jewels he could easily pocket for a fair amount of coin. He didn't care that he made a mess at that point, once he got out he'd be safe, there was no way they'd be able to link the theft to him with so many strange people in the palace already. Chances where they'd blame the servants first.

It didn't take long for Adam to find the Lady's jewelery box tucked away in her vanity. He set the small box on top the vanity and opened a pouch on his leather belt, pulling out a set of lock picks. He pulled off the thin leather gloves he wore with his teeth and set to work on the small lock keeping him from his riches.

The lock gave with a small 'Click' and Adam opened the box, his lips forming that crooked smile of his as he observed his spoils. The Dragon's eye wasn't in there, there was no way they'd keep it in a simple jewelery box. He looked around the room as he stuffed his satchel full of the necklaces, rings, and earrings. He wanted to take the box too but it was too big for his satchel and probably too easy to recognize. He returned the box to the vanity and turned his attention to a specific wardrobe. Something told him that something far more valuable than corsets and cloaks where behind it's doors. Drapes of silk with the Family crest embroidered on it hung on either side of it beneath which brass bowls sat full of water and sweet smelling flower petals upon expertly carved stone collumns. Adam strode towards the wardrobe and opened it.

There it was. The Dragon's Eye placed upon a satin pillow, behind it an ornamental mirror hung reflecting the thief's hooded complexion. His eyes where just barely visible in the shadows of his hood, peering sternly back at him, his scars visible against his pale skin. His shoulders looked broad and strong carrying the bow and quiver. Adam looked away from his reflection and picked up the golden broach in his leather bound hands. The gem seemed to flicker and wink at him in the glow of the torches placed around the room for light.

Collet wandered aimlessly down empty halls and more dark and bare corridors. By this point, he was almost certain he was forbidden from this area, but he didn't seem to care. All the guards were distract by the ball. Anyways, even if he did get caught, he hadn't done anything, what could they hold against him? He could simply say he was lost and needed help back to the ball.

Moonlight bled through the windows and onto the stone floors. It was truly a beautiful night, certainly one fit for a harvest ball like this. An occasional breeze would run through the halls, causing Collett to shiver. He pushed his hair out of his face and kept walking. This estate seemed to be an endless maze of no return. How could anyone possibly make it through here?

Many moments past, and there was almost no sign that anyone had been in this part of the large castle at all, at least, not for many hours.

Collett exhaled then decided to turn around and try to find his way back. He passed several lit hallways, none of which he recognized. There seemed to be no way of escaping the fact that he was utterly lost. Looks like he wouldn't have to worry about lying if he was in fact caught.

Adam froze suddenly hearing footsteps going past the room he was in, hesitate and go past again. He drew one of his duel swords silently and crept towards the doorway. He peered out into the hall and with a swift move put an arm around Collett, covering his mouth, his other hand holding the sharp edge of his blade against his throat. It was very awkward with the Viol between them but Adam managed it.

"Scream and I slit your throat, who are you and what are you doing back here? Did someone send you?" He asked in a deep threatening tone. He moved his hand so Collett could answer his question but pressed firmly with his blade to make sure the man knew he wasn't above cutting his throat.

As Collett moved down the hall slowly and in a doddling fashion. He suddenly felt the hand cover his mouth a the could edge of a blade to his neck, he was prepared to yelp but it was immediately muffled. He shivered, as he felt the pressure of the blade increase.

"Scream and I slit your throat, who are you and what are you doing back here? Did someone send you?"

As the hand was removed from his face, Collett took in a sharp breath. "I- I'm just a musician," the blonde man replied quickly. "I was lost." He wondered if he was unconvincing. Collett fought the urge to cry out, the idea of being killed on the spot was terrifying.

Adam thought a moment. He looked either way down the hall. It was empty, no one there but them. He really didn't have to kill the guy as long as he didn't talk. "Alright. Since you caught me at a bit of a bad time I'll let you go easy. I'll show you the way back as long as you promise to keep your mouth shut. You never saw me, understood?"

Collett could probably feel Adam's breath against his ear and smell the stink of the streets on his clothes. There was no way he was one of the guests or servants or even a guard, not with that sword pressed against his throat.

"Well?? Will you keep your mouth shut?"

Collett swallowed and nodded in a pathetic way. "Yeah! Yeah! Sure!" He cried and waited for the man to release him from the grip.

The man was taller than him, by at least a couple inches. This only added to the intimidation. He suddenly felt very cold, or maybe it was just now that he realized how cold he was before hand. He felt stiff like he had been standing this way for hours, though it was merely moments.

"Now, just put that knife away! You're going to end up hurting the instrument." Collett scowled, wanting to reach for the viola that still rested on his back.

Adam let the man go and sheathed his sword. "Follow me and keep quiet!" Adam commanded. He glanced the man at full view. A slightly smaller Blonde haired man with nice clothes and a viola strapped to his back as if to state music was his choice in weapons. Didn't do him any good today.

Adam turned and promptly strode on down the hall back towards the ball. His stride was swift and purposeful and he didn't even bother to slow and look to see if the musician was keeping up. What was this moron thinking of wandering off in the middle of a formal ball when he clearly was supposed to be playing for authority. It's not as if every musician got to be invited to such a place on a whim, his skills where clearly enough to impress the Lord and Lady of Markridge. If a guard had caught him near the Lady's quarters after Adam had finished off in there, the musician would have been facing serious accusations of theft. Perhaps it would have been better for Adam to leave him there to be caught...

Collett's hand almost immediately went up to his neck when released, as if he had been choked, it had felt like it. He scowled again and followed behind Adam, crossing his arms once he had pulled himself together again.

"What the hell were you doing back there anyway? Stealing, no doubt, but you certainly didn't go out of your way for a few necklaces." He had irritation in his voice.

Adam was odd, unlike any other person he'd seen round this area. He was tough, he reeked, but those scars. It wasn't until the man had released that he had notice those three scars. It threw Collett off for a moment.

"Tch" Adam almost physically scowled at the comments. "You clearly don't understand the meaning of 'Keep quiet, do you." He growled.

To be honest he was taken aback by Collett's guts. Not many could pull off making a smartass comment to the guy who had previously held a sword to his throat. "Either way I'm going to make far more off these 'few necklaces' then you'll ever make playing that damned thing." He muttered. "Now shut up before you attract a guard."

Adam continued to lead Collett through the halls and it took a moment but they could at least hear the ball from where they where now, it wasn't far off.

Collett followed after him, the same bitter look plastered to his face. The hallways went on forever, but they somehow seemed to manage back in the foyer.

Collett pulled his hair behind his ear and began to walk off back towards the ball. "Fair well," the blond said sarcastically, removing the viola from his back along with the bow. He didn't like being around the man with the scarred face.

On Collett's way back to the ballroom, he spotted a guard. Adam was still near the exit when last Collett saw him, he pointed him out to the guard and then went back to where the band was.

Adam shook his head and turned towards the exit. He tried the door but his stomach clenched as the door simply rattled in its lock. They'd closed it after the last shipment.

"Stop where you are Thief!"

"Shit." Adam turned slowly to face three guards blocking his pathway out of the kitchen and into the Foyer. Their hands where resting on the hilt of their swords just as Adams rested on the hilt of his. Adam sighed deeply vowing to make the musician pay for not keeping his mouth shut.

There was a clear and audible sound of steel against scabbard as swords where drawn from the next room. It happened fast Collett likely hadn't even gotten back to the band's set yet. He wouldn't have been able to see the events that unfolded next. Adam drew both his swords and leapt for the first guard. His body twisted in the air his swords moving as if they where extensions of his own arms they came down at an angle and hit with the speed of a devil. The guard had only just managed to draw his sword when his throat and chest where slashed open. His body hit the ground as if god had shoved him down. The next guard managed to block the first sword that came down on him, but Adam used the momentum returned from that block and his skill and strength to use his second sword to cut open his throat with a quick swipe. Adam blocked the attack served by the third guard and kicked him back into a shelf stocked high in iron cookware which cascaded on the man knocking him clean out.

Adam bolted out of the kitchen, into the foyer and after Collett, sheathing one of his swords and grabbing the back of Collett's fine coat with his free hand. "I warned you not to speak, you betrade me, now you are coming with me, musician." Adam growled in a tone dripping in venom. He pressed the now bloody blade against the musician's throat.

"COME CLOSE AND THIS MAN DIES!"

Collett had heard the clashing of swords from the foyer, the music seemed to stop as the attention of the band was drawn towards the distinct sound of a fight. A few cries were heard as some of the people witness the death of two guards. Collett spun around, and before he knew it, he heard the familiar dark voice of the street rat, and the same feeling of the blade to his throat, only this time the sword felt wet.

A look of fear spread across Collett's face. What the hell had he gotten himself into in so little time. He caught sight of one of the guards, lying, bleeding away on the stone floor. Collett felt an immense guilt consume him from inside out as if someone had already stabbed him where he stood. There was even a moment where Collett wondered if he had been stabbed already.

He heard the loud voice of the thief's voice in his ear, his ear stung and ringed for a few seconds. The words, "you're coming with me, musician," echoed in his mind.

The entire room grew increasingly fussed as more and more people grew aware of the current situation. Blades where drawn by several guards but as they realized a life was at stake they grew hesitant and unsure.

"Murderer!" One of the guards cried out. "What have you done?!"

Lord Audouin appeard from the crowd. He looked over towards the puddles of blood in the kitchens and looked to Collett then to Adam, his great bushy cherry blond brows knitted. "Listen, you don't have to do this, young man. You can keep whatever it is you have stolen, just let the man go. Haven't you killed enough already?"

Adam had his arms securely around Collett, blade against his throat. Collett was forced to move back with him towards the doors one step at a time. "This man's not going anywhere. I need to teach him what happens to rats when they run off to tell tales about other rats. If you come anywhere near us I will slit his throat like I did to your guards, let us walk and maybe he'll survive another day. Once I leave your palace you're not to follow me, if I see anyone lurking in the shadows they and this man will die and I will disappear. You will give me one day's head start, give me that and I promise wherever this man ends up he will be alive to some extent."

Collette let out a small whimper, as he was drawn back by the blade. He felt the warm liquid, of what could only be blood, dripping from the blade that bound him. He was trapped and unsure of what to do. He was at this thief's mercy, he didn't want to get into anymore trouble so he just told himself to do whatever the man said, and maybe he'd leave with only a few injuries in the end of all this.

The guards had no clue what to do so they stayed out of the way as Adam brought Collett out of the palace and onto the grounds. Once they where in the open Adam got a brief glimpse of shadows moving around on the walls before he practically threw Collette to the side and blocked an arrow aimed for his head with the broad side of his sword. "GO, NOW! Head for the gates and don't even think of running away from me. I assure you I will bury an arrow in the back of your scull!"

As he said this Adam sheathed his sword and reached behind his back pulling out his bow and nocking an arrow. He let loose several strong shots in the direction of the archers, keeping close to his hostage to make sure he didn't run off. "Go to the left and head for the alleys!"

Collette was taken outside, the temperature dropping quickly. He felt the shove and the loud words of Adam. "GO, NOW!" He still had his viola in hand, but he refused to let go of it, even if it was inconvenient. "Head for the gates and don't even think of running away from me. I assure you I will bury an arrow in the back of your scull!" Collette didn't need to be told this twice. He picked up running, even if he looked like an idiot running with a viola in his hand.

"Go to the left and head for the alleys!" The man was still close behind. Collette listened, heading where he was instructed. His breath was heavy now. He hated this. All of this. Collette already despised change, and this simply didn't help.
