Aether, An indepth look

Dictionary of Corsair wrote:Aether (ee-ther/eh-ther/ay-ther): n.
-An element which exists all over the universe, harmless in low quantity, deadly when condensed. Aether serves as the power source for most heavy machinery in Corsair

Section 1:Discovery of Aether

Aether was first discovered fifty years ago, in a study on a natural phenomenon that was at the time speculated to be geothermal vents. The study was led by two renowned scientists, geologist Amalia Scipio, and alchemist Dmitri Orwhim.

It was a well known fact that these vents were highly dangerous and should be avoided at all costs, so much so that even the monstrous locomotives were built to avoid them, and should one spawn too close to the tracks, the tracks would be moved, and the train route would be shut down until the new route was laid.

The reason the vents were so dangerous was because of the effects it had upon approach. At first, the effects would be mild, headaches, dizziness, lightheadedness, but the longer one was exposed to the vents, or the closer one got, the worst the effects got, hallucinations, migraines, exhaustion, black outs and then death. Extended exposure to the effects could have long lasting or permanent effects on the body, insomnia, paralysis, psychosis, rashes, tumors, organ failure and, if the victim was exposed for too long, eventual death.

Aside from the devastating effects on the body, The vents were known to be surrounded by monstrous beasts, aggressive and territorial, most would attack any one on sight, regardless of whether or not they were provoked.

Another reason for the vents deadly reputation was another phenomenon; regular eruptions of indigo flames, these flares can last anywhere from seconds to minutes to even hours, depending in the size of the vents. The flames were potent enough to melt through a passing train and char the earth surrounding it, usually leading to the vents being surrounded by a glowing violet glass of sorts, later called aether obsidian.

Ironically enough, the safest time to approach a vent was during the week immediately after an eruption, after the earth had cooled and the vents seemed to enter a dormant state. During this period, the monsters are most docile (however still very aggressive) and none of the effects of approaching the vent are felt.

Samples of the earth around it were taken, but the most peculiar discovery happened upon looking inside the vents. While most geothermal vents led very deep into the earth, these vents were actually quite shallow, anywhere from fifteen to a hundred feet deep. The vents were lined with peculiar marble-like stones, black with indigo whorls. Samples of these were also taken for inspection.

Under a controlled environment, the stones found inside the vent were held under close watch. At first nothing happened. They behaved as normal stones. They broke when crushed, melted when placed under intense head, sunk in water, etc.

The discovery that sparked the series of events that led to a new era was made when they stopped experimenting on the stones. The stones were placed in storage when nothing was able to be learned from them. As the weeks went by, people began to complain of headaches and stomachaches, particularly whenever visiting the storage rooms. A search was conducted, and thats when they stumbled upon the stones again. Now that they had been given enough time, the stones had begun to glow a steady indigo, or, not so much glow, as much as smoke, or steam. Immediately, the stones were isolated in their own room, and put under arduous study once again. Teams of alchemists, geologists, astronomers, and physicists from all over both Amarais and Gimli were called to the University of Borne, where the studies were taking place. It was here that it was deduced that the stone seemed to attract and condense this, what at the time was thought to be gas.

After more studies, it was discovered that not only was it not a gas, it was a new element altogether, an extremely volatile one at that. The new element, which they called aether, was in a constant state of expansion, and when pulled together, would continue to build pressure around the stones, called Scipite, better known as aether stones, until the pressure proved too much and the aether flared out in all directions. It was also found that as the aether stones gathered more aether, they also became warmer, eventually to the point where the earth around the deposits of the stones was also converted into Aether Obsidian.

Upon studying the Aether Obsidian, it was found that it was the only thing that aether was unable to pass through, and aether stones were unable to collect aether from within enclosures made of aether obsidian, and were thus used to create containers for the transport of aether, and long term storage of aether stones. The aether obsidian was quite dangerous to handle bare-handed, but the harmful effects were easily overcome, with a simple barrier between skin and the aether obsidian itself, a simple paint-thin coating of brass, aluminum, or iron would do just fine.

The vents where the aether stones and aether obsidian were found were henceforth called aether vents, and the beasts that resided near them were known as aether beasts.

Section 2: Effects of Aether

As mentioned before, aether is found everywhere, a fact that was discovered with a device created with the aether stones called the aether detector. The detrimental effects of the aether don't come into play when one is met by aether, as aether passes through the body at all times. The detrimental effects happen when too much aether is introduced to the body at once.

The effects include
■Rash
■Nausea
■Headaches
■Blurred vision or blindness
■Light-headedness
■Dizziness
■Confusion
■Paranoia
■Insomnia
■Nightmares
■Hallucinations
■Heart Palpitations
■Sweating
■Sores
■Burns (when exposed to aether flames or condensed either
■Necrosis
■Weakening of immune system
■Organ failure
■Psychosis
■Sterility
■Death
*Organised by increasing severity, caused by time or amount exposed.

This is the reason why aether is not used in domestic applications unless in extremely small quantities, and why those who deal with it directly must be trained, lisenced individuals.

Section 3: Aether Beasts

Often times, after long exposure to a place where aether collects, normal creatures of the land will undergo transformations. While these transformations can vary, most of the time they can make docile animals and plants, dangerous, and dangerous animals and plants, even more dangerous. There are two classifications of aether beasts

1)Aether converts

Normal animals that stumble upon aether sources will often become drunk with the aether, and will attack without warning. These animals can be identified by the glazed over look in their eyes, sickly appearance, and the appearance of sores and blisters. These animals have a short lifespan, and bites and scratches can cause effects similar to exposure to an aether vent, known as aether poisoning, the antidote being a remedy made with aether obsidian. Aether converts enter into a berserker state, which allow them to pursue targets for miles without getting tired, and will continue to fight even after having limbs cut off. Only an undeniably

fatal blow (I.e to the brain or heart) will kill them. Often times, people who have the capacity will kill them on sight, not out of hatred, but out of mercy, as aether converts live in perpetual pain.

2)Aether Beasts

Over time, some animals have evolved to thrive in aether rich environments. And can even survive in close proximity to extremes such as aether vents. Such animals are called aether beasts. Identifiable by their glowing indigo eyes and growths of aether obsidian around their body, Aether beasts are not always aggressive, some are docile, until provoked. It is not safe to eat aether beasts, as ingesting their flesh can cause aether poisoning.

Aggressive aether beasts are much more dangerous than normal predatory animals, they are faster, stronger, and much harder to kill.

Some examples of aether beasts are

-Drakons: Large, sometimes winged reptilian aether beasts, the considered one of the most deadly aether beasts, these monstrosities are capable of emitting aether jets from their mouths. Their claws and teeth are hard enough to pierce the hard shells of airship balloons. At birth, they are the size of small dogs, no end to their growth, or lifespan, has been recorded.

-Aether Lions: Lions that have evolved to thrive in the aether, their thick mane able to store large amounts of aether, and therefore it is recommended to keep a wide berth. Extremely fast, they are known to travel at speeds upwards of 45 miles an hour, with short bursts of speed that have been clocked in at 80 miles per hour.

Section 4: The Industrialization of Aether

Despite only being able to physically interact with aether stones and aether obsidian, the applications of aether in the industry were quickly found. Minerals and metals melted over an aether flame provided different results than those melted over normal coal flames, the same went for liquids boiled over an aether flame.

Not only that, but after careful experimentation and alchemic modifications to the aether stones, scientists were able to collect aether at a much faster rate with less stones. They found that not only did aether burned much easier and much hotter than coal, it also lasted much longer, it served as its own fuel source and the incendiary was not a spark, but a collect, condense and release mechanism that force fed pressurized aether through small openings.
{GM NOTE:Think of the release mechanism as a sort of gas line, as it is the closest thing in the real world that can equate to it.
-Isengrim}

While collection of aether was difficult, high maintence, and dangerous, it was obvious that the large scale AND long term applications were extremely profitable.

The aether engine was created, and with it, faster airships, locomotives, and ships were made, much more efficient automatons were made, and, in ingenious combination of alchemic runology, engineering, and luck, the first sentient automaton was created, powered by a miniature aether engine, which serve as it's heart, and a collection of steam driven parts, and intricate clockwork mechanics, human kind had successfully created a non-organic life form, capable of learning, thinking, and feeling for itself.
