Battlefield: A Strategic War Game (Created By Obake)

Tips: 0.00 INK Postby Obake on Fri Mar 04, 2016 4:11 am

I deleted this post and provided the official tutorial for Battlefield in my responding post. But here is the map. Ignore the words on the side of the map, those were written before I completed the official tutorial. This map is just a prototype, I will provide a better map in the future. Also, the tutorial I posted below was written with such detail, you could actually manifest this board game into existence using the guidelines I provided for the players. I hope you enjoy it. Please, if you have any feedback or ideas on how to improve Battlefield, feel free to speak your mind. Thank you.

BATTLEFIELD: A GAME OF STRATEGY

Tutorial Written By Obake

Introduction:
BATTLEFIELD is a strategy-based tabletop wargame designed for 2-players. The scenerio for this tutorial is some form of World War, but the players are encouraged to use their own imagination to create their own unique scenerios. Napoleon's War, Star Wars, Marvel vs DC and other scenerios can also be generated using this same basic structure and ruleset with slight variations.

The game board:
BATTLEFIELD features a rectangular board with a square grid map. The board has 25x15 squares and the side with 25 squares faces each player. Each square represents one of five terrains; mountains, hills, forests, grass and water. To make navigation easier, the squares are numbered and lettered. To make navigation harder, the terrain is interactive and effects how peices manuever during gameplay:

Mountains - Only spies, scouts and miners can land on these squares. All other units must navigate around the mountains. Units on this terrain are not affected by bombers.
Hills - Any unit can post on the hills. Ranged units gain +1 range bonus. Any unit on a hill gains +1 defense bonus if attacked, or +1 offense bonus if attacking.
Forests - Any unit can enter the forest. Units on this terrain are not affected by ranged units if attacked at range. Players are not required to reveal their attacking units if attacking from within the forest.
Grass - Any unit can walk on the grass. Units on this terrain gain no special bonuses or penalties. Gameplay continues as normal.
Water - Only spies, admirals and captains can enter the water. All other units must navigate around the water.

The pieces:
BATTLEFIELD has 200 individual pieces divided into 2 colors. Each player starts with 100 pieces of their own color. These pieces represent soldier units of various ranks and types. The units are one-sided and are setup facing one direction so that opponents can not see each other's units. Players can place their units wherever they want on the map within the first 5 rows. After setup, each player should have 5 rows of 20 units for a total of 100 units altogether. This setup resembles a phalanx army formation.

Unit types:
Flags - Each player gets 1 flag. Flags can not be placed on water or mountains. Once the flag is placed, it is immoveable during gameplay. Flags can not attack or defend. The object of the game is to capture the enemy flag.
Mines - Each player gets 12 mines that do not self destruct when attacked. Mines can only be diffused by miners and bombers. Any other unit that attacks a mine will be destroyed. Mines can not be placed on water. Once a mine is placed, it is immoveable during gameplay.
Bombs - Each player gets 6 bombers that self destruct upon impact with another unit, whether attacking or defending. Any units adjacent to the bomber are also removed from gameplay even if they have the same color. Bombers have the low rank of 11 but are useful for clearing paths.
Scouts - Each player gets 20 scouts with a low rank of 10. Scouts have the special ability to navigate through mountains.
Miners - Each player gets 16 miners with a low rank of 9. Miners are the only unit specially designed to diffuse mines. Miners also have the ability to navigate through mountains.
Sergeants - Each player gets 10 sergeants with a low rank of 8. Sergeants have no special abilities.
Leuitenants - Each player gets 10 leiutenants with a low rank of 7. The leuitenant can attack from melee or from a range of up to 2 squares. If attacking from range, the attacker is not required to reveal their unit type or rank.
Captains - Each player gets 8 captains with a high rank of 6. Captains have the special ability of navigating through water.
Majors - Each player gets 6 majors with a high rank of 5. The major has no special abilities but has a slightly higher rank, making the major harder to capture.
Colonels - Each player gets 4 colonels with a high rank of 4. The colonel has no special abilities.
Generals - Each player gets 3 generals with a high rank of 3. Generals have no special abilities on the battlefield.
Marshals - Each player gets 2 marshals with a high rank of 2. The marshal has no special abilities but has a much higher rank.
Admirals - Each player gets 1 admiral with a high rank of 1. The admiral has the ability to navigate through water.
Spies - Each player gets 2 spies with a peculiar rank of 12. Spies are a specialized unit that could easily use their own section in this tutorial. See below for further details.

The spies:
Spies are a specialized unit with several abilities. Spies can attack and destroy any other unit except for a mine. Spies can even assassinate the admiral. But spies can also be destroyed if attacked by any other unit, including scouts. If a spy attacks another spy, both units are removed from the battlefield. Spies have the ability to navigate over any terrain. Spies can either attack from melee or from a range of up to 5 squares. Spies are not required to reveal their unit type and rank if attacking from range.

The gameplay:
BATTLEFIELD begins with the roll of two 6-sided dice. The player with the highest dice roll goes first. Players now have 100 units at their disposal. Players can only make one command per turn, meaning they can only move one unit each turn. Players must move on their turn. If they can not move, the game is over. Units can only move one square at a time with the exception of ranged units. Players can only win the game by capturing the enemy flag. Units can move vertical or horizontal, but not diagonally during gameplay. The game plays out similar to the Stratego board game.

The strategy:
BATTLEFIELD is a game of memory. Knowledge is power, so gather information by attacking enemy units. Use the terrain as an advantage. Study the tutorial and survey the terrain. Knowing the units and their abilities will increase the odds of winning. And remember, the objective is not to destroy an entire army. The objective is to capture the enemy flag, so plan carefully and use everything as an advantage.
