Challenge to Lamina Manira

Tips: 0.00 INK Postby Fenris Olfwood on Mon Sep 22, 2014 1:09 am

By pure chance Fenris had heard tell of the Gladiator still being around in these parts. Eager for a challenge he had tracked her down to this realm. It had been many years since the Gladiator and him had fought, she had beaten him soundly every time. Now however he sought to see if he had really improved. As the years passed by, more and more the general skill level of his opponents seemed to drop, or perhaps he had improved, till now he considered it a feat if any could last more than three moves with him in a straight bout of fencing. He was clad in the cloak of his station, a stark white trimmed with fur on the edges, a vest upon his chest, and bracers on his forearms. Now widely considered the greatest swordsman on The Nexxus at least the greatest active one it was nostalgic to meet the object of his frustration again after so much time.

In his left hand a 2 1/2 foot Langes-Messer was held, his weight resting on his back left leg, his knees bent he waited for her arrival.

She ascends from the steps on the other end of the coliseum, and up into the ring. In her right hand is her trusty venetian schiavona, swinging idly at her side as she approaches her opponent. She had received word that she received a challenge, and rose to meet it, as was a large portion of her career. What surprised the young teenage girl was the familiarity. Fenris. An opponent she had faced before, long ago. It seemed like ages, though in reality it hadn't been long.

"Indeed..." he stated, eyeing her weapon knowing it would give her the advantage of reach. He sighed and regarded her. "I've come to see if I have truly reached the apex of my art... Now we shall see won't we?" he asked with a slight cock of his head. "You know I'm not one for small talk... So lets just cut to the chase... Shall we?" A distance of twelve or so feet separated as he fell into stance. His right hand placed upon the corresponding hip, while his left leg slid forward. His arm outstretched and aligned the tip of his "long-knife" forward at her chest. He waited for her to ready herself, though he would have no qualms about attacking first if she did.

"Okay... let's do this."
The girl closes the gap, just staring up at him. Who knew what she was thinking. Perhaps she was sizing him up, knowing that by this amount of time many opponents improve or change. Or perhaps the extended few seconds of silence, should it go unbroken, served as a psychological buffer for a sudden, swift move.
It wasn't powerful in the slightest, no - a deft flick of her wrist aided by a guiding arm took the tip of the schiavona to graze against Fenris' left hand that gripped his weapon. His fingers, hand, or wrist - whichever was closer or had the least armor protection. The common denominator is the angle of her sword - from a mostly forward point, as little deviation in that angle is made toward the slice, typical of fencing with longer range weapons. She was certainly taking advantage of the length of her blade over his, while examining his technique.

It was almost refreshing... To be attacked first. He knew she would not shirk at such a thing. He was confident in his abilities but he knew he faced an opponent of prodigious skill, every movement she made was deliberate even the feint she was delivering now. The range advantage was not as far in her favor as Fenris thought, and fortunately that would give her less of an advantage.

As she closed he knew at least two things instinctively, that as a feint the angle of her attack could change exceedingly quick, and that he would be best served in -forcing- her to react to his next movement. That would be easier said than done. Barring that he could at least try to limit her options with her blade with the angle of his own.

Her feinting strike came, and he acted with a simple turning of his wrist angling his sword towards the ground in a flicking motion that would bring the middle of his flat against the upper length of her blade seeking to divert her sword to his far left, This was done as he stepped to his own right as well, his back leg sliding forward as he turned to his left in the motion to favor her left side, his right arm rising slightly from its position as well, and his sword arm would bend and retract slightly in the parrying motion. The movements simple, fluid, and simultaneous. He did not follow up yet, testing her own reactions as she did with him.

Fenris' parry was good, it did as intended. Lamina's blade was knocked down and right (Fenris' left), having been struck from above by the opponent's sword. His footwork, however, exposed him to a grave error. Lamina was light and thus quite nimble. His step farther to Lamina's left was met with a leap in the same direction. Lamina sprung from her right foot, though she tugged with her the right arm and wrist, pulling the basket-hilted sword in front of her body, its tip outstretched past her right flank. This not only formed an effective brace against the position Fenris' sword had moved to with its parry, but also set it up for the cut. Lamina's little leap towards an opponent leaning into it brought range nearly flush, and with the redirected angle of her sword, she would slice at his soft neck, a gap in armor, or whichever was the softest of targets presented inches from the edge of her blade, especially as its tip cleared the lock with the opponent's sword and released all that pressure.
"HA!!"

Her footwork would have to follow, he may not be as nimble as her but his movements had been done with purpose. He moved as he acted and she did, meaning she would have to step immediately -after- the parry.
His slightly retracted sword and the distance between them minimized; his short weapon allowed easy close quarter attacks but right now he focused on defense. He would simply turn his wrist to lock his crossguard with her sword, as his blade was better suited to the bind. The result would see him form his own brace against her own stopping it short of reaching his neck and leaving his own sword as a brace against her own. Using superior weight and strength he shoved into her with his left shoulder to push her off of him, his arm still bent till the moment of the push and then his next immediate action would depend on her own. He could have tried other methods but this was a test not a battle to the death.

He was certainly nimble enough to catch her sword with the crossguard. She would find her entire weight pressing against this sword lock, and when he shoved her, she stumbled back several paces. This was the second fight of the day in which she was reminded of her own size. Shoving the young girl would be quite an effortless task for Fenris.
She firmly planted her feet when she could, springing back towards him, her sword poised forward threateningly to his chest. In her advance, Fenris would see fire in her emerald eyes.

As she was pushed back and entered into her stumble, he stepped forward and to his left as she brought her blade to bare, stepping off the line and turning slightly to his right while his coiled left arm brought the blade forward from a slightly rising angle threatening her underarm with a gentle jabbing motion from her far right, that allowed for easy adjustment. Fens own right arm held poised ready to defend or attack level with his upper ribs and potentially between her blade and his own body. He knew she might be well placed to easily adjust but his action would force a reaction from her.

Fenris was smart to pursue at this point, though as he had stepped forward once while she stumbled back several desperate paces to keep from falling, her light weight and backpedaling had probably granted her more range on him. While Fenris closed some of it, it was still too much for an efficient cut. Though assuming Fenris had pursued to the best of his ability regardless and caught up with her, she would indeed be forced to defend.
This she would do, should Fenris prove close enough to attempt a rising thrust beneath her sword in her right arm from a diagonal angle from her right field of view. The point of her sword would lower, in a parry at a similar angle to Fenris' first defense, with the objective of striking the oncoming sharp tip and deviating its angle to her right, putting her sword technically on the inside of his guard. Was he testing her?
Naturally, she couldn't have sprung back at him due to him attacking first, and so her legs remained slightly bent, poised in anticipation like a spring as she stood her ground against the lock.

His blade was parried as to be expected, but his last attack had obviously been a feint even as her first one had been. As she diverted from the interior of his guard, he stepped further to his left yet kept his arm stationary so as to keep it against her sword and moving to her right suddenly causing her blade to be outside of his guard, and angling its tip around her blade making another threatening jab at her right underarm while his own right arm remained poised at his ribs placing her blade at his right side.

As her parry went as expected, she'd deviated the thrust to her right side and had her blade within his guard. He stepped again, moving more towards her right flank as he levers his sword back in at the previous thrusting angle, using her own blade as a fulcrum. She had previously been poised for a spring by her slightly bent legs from her brace against the backwards stagger, and so with her sword within her guard and her opponent moving to her side, she thrust off into a swift step in the direction of his right shoulder, evading Fenris' redirected thrust while holding off his blade. Come what may from his free arm; Lamina's sword, at this point in time, was both inside his guard and it's point, by nature of their maneuvering, tipped inward toward Fenris' left side. From here, she'd jab practically point-blank at any soft target on the right side of his body that presented itself, as Fenris inadvertently stepped into what would have been a painful demise too swift for an efficient reaction from his right arm's bracer. Lamina, however, intended to stop her blade just short of puncture.

He stepped to his left continually as she adjusted continuing to turn to his right and keeping his blade against her own not giving it any room to get free and exerting pressure against it. The torque of his body and the continued contact would see him push her blade off past his right side never allowing her to realign for the thrust towards him. The result saw him step around her thrust as a result of his previous movement and realign his blade towards her chest once again breaking contact after avoiding the thrust. It was also worth noting that since he was stepping left and she was aiming at his right, he would not be stepping into it either, and their opposite movements would open up the distance.

So far they were evenly matched and neither could seem to gain a decisive advantage, but neither of them had been going in for a decisive movement yet and were playing it safe. It stood to reason then that eventually one of them would have to make the first real gamble or this might not ever end, it was gratifying that now he was at least her equal when before he could not last longer than two to three moves against her.

Lamina moved to shorten the disengagement as much as possible and continued in a pursuit. As he retreated from her, she advanced. Her left foot would make a long step towards him before she shoves off of it, propelling her body forward in a swift, almost dance-like advance that immediately brought the two barely within striking distance again. She poised her sword forward, nearly locking her arm during her graceful step, and at its end she bent her forward right knee, lowering her body and leaning in, her arm pointing the sword in a way where her body's approach made it stab at Fenris' forward thigh, though from a safe distance at which only about an inch could penetrate. It was a very typical, though kinetically aggressive, fencer's thrust.

Something about her attack instinctively put him on guard, it seemed bold yet she still held something back. A literal prod.

Unlike the previous defensive measures he had taken, his blade now moved from outside of her guard from a slightly falling angle intending to both force her blade across her body and also towards the ground striking the middle with his own thicker swords forte`, as his right arm seemed to lower and cross his body slightly and he turned slightly towards his right off line of her intended thrust but just barely.

The intent was to end with his crossguard compromising her control and locking her blade again, with him moving slightly to her right and also slightly closer past the 3 foot mark between them. Leaving him waiting for her reaction with his own device taking shape.

Re: Challenge to Lamina Manira

That intent reached fruition, with the tip of Lamina's blade hit hard and forced in an angular deviation that had it dipping near the ground just in front of her left, metal plated boot. Fenris had superior leverage, orchestrated with the use of his forte as the striking point. Continued maneuvering toward Lamina's right flank while holding off her sword would most certainly assure that her initial thrust did not meet its mark.
However, Lamina was quite adept at encapsulating the hallmark deception within the art of fencing. The source of her thrust's power came primarily from her body's inertia from the advance, rather than a forceful extension of her arm. The blade had been, instead, dexterously poised into the position Fenris had just sabotaged. This allowed her extended arm wiggle room. Due to the lower stance Lamina had taken to extend through the range for a distant thrust, Fenris had moved inward toward her right flank, intuitively away from the tip of the shiavona. This allowed him to approach close enough to strike Lamina's low attack with a low striking point - the langes-messer's forte, which would require a certain degree of commitment in the extension of Fenris' sword arm downwards, to meet the attack initially aimed to a thigh.
With Fenris very nearly flush with her at this point, slightly right and forward of her position and his arm downwards mid-parry, Lamina raised her stance as the natural follow-through of such forward steps, maintaining the lock on her opponent's sword as her right arm raised in a sharp strike to Fenris face or chin. The interplay of angles, inertia and timing should promise a full-blown connection, as he'd be moving into the attack by the very nature of his defense. While not necessarily fatal, it was very swift and practically guaranteed, with destructive force and pain enough to possibly draw first blood or at the very least, cause him to stagger backwards or lose a significant amount of focus and attention. The basket hilt of her sword compensated for her small size and strength, effectively providing the girl brass knuckles and even the offensive hook to her sword's guard.

Re: Challenge to Lamina Manira

Every movement Fenris made was deliberate, his right hands motion crossing over as he turned to face her saw it impose itself between her and him, it was almost precognitive, but really it was just a sense of caution born of experience. The turn simultaneous with the slight crossing of the arm allowed it to adjust into an interception just barely catching her rising arm as it came and diverting its course to turn the hilt strike into a glancing blow that cut open his right cheek. The fact she struck first enticed him, and he felt a ferocity born of defiance, as his motion also saw him grasping her forearm near the elbow

His blade still locking hers with the cross-guard and already rising upward in the motion would see an ironic follow-up. His own pommel strike delivered point blank up into the side of her jaw immediately after her strike finished, intending to knock her unconscious with his considerably more robust pommel.

Re: Challenge to Lamina Manira

Lamina found herself in the same predicament as her opponent; a free offhand. And like her opponent, her defense came to mitigate the damage of the pommel's blow, though unable to stop it completely. Fenris' forearm struck hard against Lamina's left bracer, shoving it back against her face while the pommel barely struck the side of her mouth. It was a source of intense adrenaline now and probably a trickle of blood later.
Her own pommel had been stopped by an effective overhand grasp of her right forearm, halting the inertia of her right arm and its sword with what was probably considerable force. Lamina, in her anger, would make a wild and forceful extension of her right arm, her body leaning down into the motion along with force of her imperfect forearm block. As Fenris had to grip her arm overhand to successfully defend her own pommel strike, a sudden adrenaline fueled thrust toward the earth should suffice in ripping her arm suddenly down from his grasp. This sudden jerk accompanied a motion of her right wrist that tipped the downward-pointed schiavona more into him, so that as her arm tore free it would puncture his waist or thigh. As this was a point-blank motion, however, extra caution was taken to stop the tip from actually delivering severe damage, even despite her raging emotions. The idea of pulling back and starting another pass to the fight occurred to her, but unfortunately, her teenage emotions won the upper hand in this round.

Were Fenris to understand this immediate outcome that had resulted of their geometric interplay, the throbbing pain and blood on her lip would then move front and center in her mind as the realization set in. Though it may, perhaps, pale in comparison to his own at the tip of her blade.
"... UGH!"

At the range they were at aligning the Schianova would be tricky even if the lean brought her distance, but that would not matter in the end because when she wrenched herself free he himself would already be moving around her flank as he had been well placed to do so, stepping around her right side and turning towards his right would cause him to move behind her as she freed her arm moving as she did and -avoiding- her attack altogether, instead of evading it. A subtle distinction but an important one in that it was not cognitive but a byproduct of his own methodology, and would make her follow up no longer applicable. Her emotional response though similar to his own was less controlled and more of a knee-jerk reaction in areas his own had still been well placed despite his irritation. In a contest this close it could prove her undoing where the smallest of factors were the difference between victory and defeat.

It seemed this fight could not be won with technique alone but with understanding and a steady hand and a cool head, realizing this, his step around her still kept them intimately close for he knew despite the risk that was perhaps the only way this contest could end in his favor. His right hand moved to grasp her right shoulder as her arm extended into her strike, his grip unto iron now, his left leg exerted pressure upon the back of her own and he leaned into her using his strength and weight to force her onto her stomach and him on top of her back, his blade tilted downward to rest against her kidney if all went as planned. Even if she did not fall the intent of his blade would still place itself at her kidney regardless though not penetrating.

To put the distinction of timing and relate it to positioning, he struck with his pommel, she leaned and extended her strike at his leg with the force of the pommel strike, but as she does so he steps around her due to his positioning which allows for minimum difficulty and grabs her shoulder, and the rest ensues immediately following.

There was little tricky about the schiavona's thrust at all. As a key in its existence was Fenris' hand stopping its hilt-strike, the distance necessary for the thrust to make its point (pun not intended, of course) was negligible, especially as the length of the weapon had been tilted inwards with her wrist. Should Fenris shove off his foot into another step as a continuation of his previous footwork, Lamina would twist to face him, in both her body and sword arm. A pivot in her position was much faster than stepping around a stationary opponent, and so Lamina's advantage in speed with both her attack and her twist were quite justifiable.
Should Fenris insist on continuing his move, a "fake" thrust would become a very real prod on the dime. There was just no wiggle-room for his escape.
