Challenges: O

O walked down the street, not hurrying. He was wearing a black hoodie, with the hood up, under a pinstripe suit jacket, and torn-up jeans, with black skate shoes. With his hands in his pockets, sauntering casually, he looked not greatly different from any other young man in the city.

Turning a corner, he began to move a little more quickly. He rolled up the sleeves on his jacket and hoodie, and began to methodicaly formulate his thoughts. By the time he reached the end of the block, his will was set. He turned again, crossed the street, and went directly towards a non-descript door in one of the buildings. The area was populated mostly by run-down warehouses and studios, and any one door in any one building was much the same as all the others.

He focused his thoughts: Vffekt, and somthing shifted. A subtle change, unrecognizable to outside observers, but intimately familiar to O. He pulled the door open as he came to it, and stepped through in the same motion. What lay on the other side of the door was no longer the simple street-side warehouse's interior. In truth, O had no idea what it was, or where, or when, but he did know that it took him closer to his goal, closer to Vffekt.

The world changing to suit the man’s desire, within the vast warehouse now stood an immense stone structure. Three stories high, the top of it pressing against a beam in the distant ceiling, and inscriptions written on the structure spoke in a different language for each word. The runes were aglow with auras that were unique, that would keep the door open to another part of this world. Another place, far away, with different air that flowed through the portal’s liquid-turquoise surface.

“If you are strong of heart, you will find your destiny. If you are strong of mind, you will find the truth. If you are strong of soul, you will find heaven. From the day of Creation to the End of Time, there is but one Truth. Enter this gateway to find your heart’s desire, enter this path to find your next challenge.

Another word was inscribed upon the floor of the short platform that held the horseshoe-shaped gate. This word was not in any earthly language, but the language of Demons. From the nightmares of Man, the sleeping horrors of the next world that awaited those whom lived only for their own gain, this language was heard only in the heart’s deepest vault of fear.

Vicious

Written with Arabic letters, which appeared to say Vffekt, which was no word in any human tongue. The portal lead to Vffekt, to the new conqueror of Kings. On the other side was a ruined castle, considered old and abandoned for a great long time, the great arch outside finally stirred with life. Worn with centuries of disrepair, this archway still held the power to bridge between any two places once a mate of it was connected with a Power Word. It held a twin to the rippling liquid surface to the one O had come across, and this empty castle was where he was meant to be.

O stepped fully into the room, closed the door behind himself, and surveyed his surroundings. The massive obelisk in front of him glowed with power, the runic tracings on it's surface obviously suffused with magic. His expression never changed, showing neither surprise nor interest. He took everything he saw at face value, stored it away, and moved on.

Stepping up to the platform, he stopped short of the portal and looked down at the single word scribed into the stone at his feet: Vffekt... Viscious... the word seemed to swim before his eyes, shifting from one form to another so that both words became one and the same.

Looking up to the gateway itself, O studied the castle beyond the portal for only a moment before calmly stepping through.

The sweet smell of lands untouched by metals and fumes flooded him before he was allowed to see what lay beyond this liquid passage which would not leave even a hint of residue on his body. The sight of a grand castle was the first of what he would see, but a few collapsed walls and a fallen tower were signs that it was long out of repair. The air was calm, the sound of wildlife nearby signaled no immediate danger, and the ground beneath his feet was soft and full of life.

Far across the world from the other portal, he was now stranded. The liquid pulled away and into the stone as the warehouse from which he’d come suddenly collapsed and shattered the nexus from which he’d come. Against his will, which was something that was not often defied, the pathway behind him was cut off.

In the long time O had lived, he had seen this type of fauna before. Somewhere in southern Europe, or perhaps one of the Americas, but he was obviously somewhere in the deepest wilderness. It was a wonder that somebody would build such a fine castle so very far from any civilization. It was easy to understand how the grand castle had found itself abandoned.

As O stepped through the viscuous fluid of the portal he smelled the sweet scent of untouched lands. It pleased him to remember the other times and places in which he had smelled such things before.

No sooner had he passed through the gateway then did it begin to close. He let it go. Fear was something O had never known, or, if he had it was so long ago that he couldn't recall the feeling, and he therefore had no fear of being stranded in this foreign land. As he thought this, O recalled to mind images of Spain and France in the spring, some centuries ago, and he felt content. At least he was still in the same universe, and, better yet, even on the same planet. There would be no mortal threat which he could not fight in this place. He strode purposefully towards the distant castle.
