Character Development

Tips: 0.00 INK Postby birthstone_spirits on Sat Feb 03, 2018 7:44 pm

Hello friends! This is going to be the official spot where we talk about character development, request second opinions, coordinate, and basically figure out the head spaces of our characters at the beginning of a given story arc. My hope is that this generates interesting interactions between characters and helps us all stay accountable in developing them compelling ways.

For every big arc I will make a synopsis post that can help kick start ideas about what you want for your character in this stage of their growth. This post will almost be written in a horoscope fashion, suggesting things that could happen in a arc like this. Everything after that post can be a free for all of ideas and suggestions about character relations and growth.

The Academy

Image

It's the beginning of fall and after a long journey our crew has finally arrived at what Haru cryptically refers to as "The Academy." Here, he says, is where they can best learn how to fight and control their Goddess given abilities. It is clear that they must participate if they wish to survive the most grueling realities of what is, for many in the group, a new and strange world.

It is here at the academy that they meet Ryou, the hospitable grand master, and a varied cast of his students who are training to contract themselves out at mercenaries across the continent. In this arc many of the warriors will face a challenge, if not physically, then emotionally as they learn to come to terms with their daunting identities as Month Warriors. Now that they have a place to call home (at least for now) it's the perfect time for them to begin cultivating friendships, feuds and perhaps romance. It is also a time for them to learn a little bit more about themselves: Some will leave the academy overwhelmed by their powers while others will wonder if they even have powers at all. Some will find themselves building exclusive alliances within their team, and others might fall on the wayside. What ever happens, we don't know for sure.

Tallyho: Tallyho is entering this arc with a lack of enthusiasm. Being away from the caravan was kind of liberating for a short while, but now that she’s at the academy she is confident that she would much rather be the ticket girl at a performance than doing pushups at the crack of dawn. Currently, she’s predisposed to not trying very hard at training. She also feels quite weary of the group in general and will likely elect to socialize with only a choice few. Though she understands the weight of the situation better than an earthling would, she won’t start this arc with a complete willingness to own her duty as a month warrior.

Haru: Though he appreciates the relief of pressure Ryou’s presence has granted him, Haru anticipates being frustrated for the next few months. He’s never been fond of weak people, but he definitely won’t like it if he catches on that some of the warriors aren’t trying as hard as they could be. His main preoccupation will be getting the warriors physically and mentally prepared for this journey. Though anxiety about one of them prematurely dying before they can complete their duty will definitely creep up on him from time to time.

Kibi: Kibi has never seen so many new faces stumble upon her home all at once. She isn’t completely aware of who these strangers are but her curiosity will certainly be telling as she will definitely ask many questions. Rest assured that Kibi will be the official eavesdropper and gossiper of the arc, so if something’s a secret it might be best not to let it slip within a ten mile radius of the bubbly girl.

Septimus:||
In this arc it may become apparent to a few that Septimus is quite mad, while to others he seems merely a little off or “out of touch” compared to the norm (definitely not completely crazy) and has a measure of true depth if you read between the lines. There’s nothing particularly cute about this fact. Tragic, yes, considering his past – at the most dangerous of ages, when young men skilled at the crafts of violence could be manipulated into employing those skills with brutal efficiency--and without questions – and how his injuries occurred (blindness, and madness walking hand-in-hand); and rather frightening at times no doubt. On occasion he might say something funny, but it isn’t funny because of a mental condition he can’t do much about. Regardless, Septimus is well versed in ‘acting’ normal to the best of his ability with kind smiles upon the maw and laughter not far behind. He may even begin to drop his lack of trust with strangers with a select number of their party... Septimus is personally attending the Academy (taking a step away from his former thespian acts) to better himself, and his health. He was a solider once, a good one too, if he can get past some trouble along the way – perhaps he’ll create some more merit for himself, without being society’s charity case or waste bucket due to his invalid status.

In terms of the “Month Warriors” themselves, let’s say that Septimus is an agnostic individual at the moment – claiming neither faith nor disbelief in Goddess w/in Old Thought, or Elementalist and/or Heraldist theories. Perhaps over time this will change, but who knows? He’ll be an interesting / interested companion never-the-less.

Alina:||
In this arc, Alina helps Ryou out with the Academy’s students and their training as one of the ‘Elite’ students. As an instructor, given her harsh, callous methods, or “tough love” towards those weaker and/or more vulnerable than herself, she may not be well received to those with flimsy attitudes. Out of these bounds, she’s a bit of a pickle of an individual being not much of a people person to the obvious glance, yet cares deeply for her Academy family – that her “yeah whatever” attitude and begrudgingly motherly do tend to contrast one another (comically per say, at times).

In terms of the destiny of the children inheriting the title of “Month Warriors”, Alina is no doubt skeptical of their claim(s) and if they will amount to much as warriors; but with Ryou (and by extension Haru) shepherding them – she’s willing to keep such thoughts silent for the time being, until proof is noted.

Ron: Throughout this ark, Ron's development will be based on events that unfold. Currently he is convinced that their situation is similar to that of a video game or tabletop game and so his attitude towards Aires reflects that. He will shirk his weapon training in exchange for making various gadgets. However, Ron will intensely study his magic and learn much about the theoretical application, but his lack of emotional/spiritual connection to the world and its people will hinder him.
