It was one of those comfortably warm days, with a light wispy breeze. The kind that you could stay out all day and not worry about getting burnt or too hot. A large car pulled up to one of the houses on the street and a tall woman stepped out of the car slowly a warm smile on her face. Shutting the driver side door she walked to the otherside of the car and opened the door carefully holding her hand out she spoke slowly.

" come on Ali.... We're home.....this....home" she said wiggling her fingers trying to intice her son out of the car. Ali looked at the large house with interest his eyes full of curiosity. He took his mothers hand gently his grip not really sure of stepping out of the vehicle. After gently coaxing Ali out of the car they both walked slowly Ali's mother supporting his back since Ali wasn't that keen on walking having spent most of the hours in a day in a wheelchair.

Walking slowly Ali kept his eyes on the floor concentrating on walking both of his hands held onto his mothers arms tightly. " home" he mumbled softly nodding to himself as he walked stopping at the door he tilted his head. His eyes focused on the glass panels showing brightly coloured flowers and birds. Ali liked bright colours as well as textures so he could see and feel them.

Opening the door slowly Ali's mother helped him up the step and lead him to the living room where some of Ali's toys and his book which contained pictures of things so he could point to them, it was Ali's form of communication at the moment aside from him saying a few words like 'mom', 'dad','yes' and 'no'. But with Ali being home now it was a hope that Ali would speak and learn new things that a normal teenager should do.

" good boy Ali...now you sit here and we will wait for Dad to come back with everything you need" she sat Ali down in a large chair that held Ali in an upright position incase Ali became unstable when he tried to move a certain way. Ali sat down his fingers feeling the texture of the chair it was softer that the one in the hospital. He smiled and clapped his hands together softly he looked out of the window at the trees. His mother watched him for a while and smiled she was glad her son was home and safe, away from the hospital, his new life was begining and he had to meet his brother yet. His mother and father had explained to Ali about his brother and showed him pictures, although they weren't sure how much Ali understood.

This was so unfair. Richard Woodward, nicknamed Woody by his friends, was missing a great night with his friends to meet his mentally ill older brother. Sure, it made him sound like a prick, but he'd planned this for months. Now, in his room, he called his friends to cancel plans and Daniel, his best friend, stayed on the phone to talk. "I'm sorry, Woody, but you know, it's probably best you're there for Ali, and hey, if you still want to come, how about you sneak out when your parents fall asleep and call me to meet you." Woody grinned, and agreed to call him when he was at the end of the block.

He heard the front door open and he heard his mother talking to the boy. Ali was a foreign topic that was always talked about but never truly explained or experienced. Woody didn't even know what mental illness his brother had. "Ricky, come meet your brother!" His mother yelled from the kitchen, which was like her home during the three hours before and after a meal. "I'll see you later, Danny." Woody hung up the phone and pulled on a hoodie over his tank top. His parents were very strict with him and he wasn't allowed to wear tank tops or skinny jeans of any kind. He wasn't even allowed to wear shoes in the house, and his bare feet echoed against the wooden doors. His Vans would've dulled his steps, he learned one night he sneaked out. At the bottom of the steps, for the first time, Ali and Woody were in the same room.

Woody definitely didn't expect the boy in front of him. He didn't even look like what he expected. But he knew from personal experience that stereotypes were few and far in-between. "Ali, Ricky. Ricky, this is Ali." Woody could find words to form in his mouth, so he simply walked across the kitchen and sat at the barstool. "Hi Ali." He answered as politely as possible.

( Just realised that I didn't put a picture in * facepalm* )

Ali was intrigued by the intricate markings in the side of the chair he was sitting in, he ran his fingertips over the markings his other hand tapping his leg rhythmically. He hardly noticed Ricky walk in until his mother had introduced them and Ricky spoke. His neck twitched briefly as he turned slightly to look at his brother, his fingers flexed as his mind connected together both the name and appearance of Ricky. He could remember seeing pictures of Ricky in his communication book when he started recognising images of people.

Ali smiled a little as the connection finnaly linked in his brain, he began nodding and tapping his hands together, his eyes looking around the room focusing on shadows and reflections on the wall " hello Ricky, your hair is long...longer than the pictures" he pointed to a picture on the kitchen wall. Ali picked up on things and memorised everything even if he had no idea what it was. He ran his hands through his own hair as if checking the own length of his hair. Pulling at it a few times he felt the long thick scar from the accident.

Ricky was stunned for a moment at the comment from his older brother. He looked at the picture and, once turned away from Ali, scowled in disgust. He hated the picture because it was the only one in the house he couldn't remember taking. It also reminded him of his parents' lies. They said the scar on his forehead, the reason he let his bangs grow out, was a birthmark, but in that picture the scar was magically gone. His mother explained it as makeup, but the other pictures from his child-hood, the ones he found in his parents's room, the scar had disappeared as well. There was something behind it, and he hated not remembering something that had happened to him.It reminded him that he didn't know everything about anything, even his own body.

"Do you like home, Ali?" Ricky asked quietly, trying to figure out something that was so familiar. He heard those words before, from Ali. Pictures couldn't make that feeling. He opened the fridge and pulled out celery and peanut butter. It was his favorite snack and he'd never really thought about it as he did now. It was like it was special, it was something he had shared with someone because they loved it as much as he did. He looked over at Ali, and a memory flushed his head.

It was him and Ali, which was strange; Ali and Ricky hadn't never met until now, or at least, that's what his parents said. But this memory was vivid, it was surely real. Ricky was about five, cradled on the back of Ali. The two boys quietly sneaked down the stairs and checked the presents at the Christmas tree. He was so confused. If Ali had his illness all his life, he wouldn't be able to carry Ricky like that, and Ricky was told by his parents that when Ali wasn't in the hospital, he was with their grandmother. So many horrible lies. Ricky couldn't even stand to look his parents in the eye.

Ali nodded quickly when Ricky asked about wether he liked being home. He tapped his hands together playing with his fingers he looked at the room again, his head tilted to the side as Ricky got a stick of celery and a jar of peanut butter out of the fridge. It was certainly a strange combination a few of the patients at the hospital had weird taste in food, like one who had ketchup with everything.

Shaking his head Ali wiggled his fingers and spoke " better than the hospital...nice and quiet here " he liked peace and quiet, the hospital became noisy to Ali some nights with patients not settling down or something else happening. Ali would enjoy sitting outside when he was allowed to as well as completing puzzles and doing simple activities. He wondered what Ricky liked to do they had never met before so it was like they were strangers to each other but they were brothers, even if Ali couldn't remember certain things or do things physically he knew who people were, which according to the doctors was very important if he was ever going to return to society.
