It wasn’t everyday a middle class fiddler like Collette was given a job performing for a private party, and today certainly wouldn’t be the day he'd decline the offer! Recently, Collette had been spotted by a lady during a small gig of his, who was willing to pay him kindly to entertain her guests the following week. This was everything he’d saved himself up for, and it had already paid off.

The family was large, from what he’d learned around town. The Ashdowns had many daughters with many husbands, most of which would be staying over night at the estate. Collette too had been offered a room, since he’d be staying fairly late, but he modestly refused. The musician knew they’d provide a carriage back into town, after all, he wasn't much for staying in foreign environments.

The estate resided up in the hills, off to the east of the city, large and sculpted just like a landscape in a painting. Collette felt honored, having to dig through his wardrobe just to find his best frock and waistcoat, which were about the most expensive items he owned. When the big day had finally dawned, he was out of the apartment and on his way.

Collette was a short, lean, and blonde young man with large blue eyes and soft features. Collette had a father, a sister, yet no brothers. His name was that of a girl's, courtesy of his deceased mother who, naturally, wanted another girl. His normally easy-going father, however, uncharacteristically despised the name after his wife's passing - insisting on making Collete go by "Cole", which Collette hated all together. Easy-going soon was no longer a trait of which his father practiced.

It didn't matter now. Collette lived on his own, though making a tough living. He worked part time at a grain booth in the Market, and of course performing on street corners, with a box for any passer-by to drop change into. But the box had been stolen one too many times, and Collette was far too stubborn to think up a better idea But finally he'd found himself a job worth doing, this could possibly be the leap in his career!

The family had welcomed him graciously into their home, and the guests would be arriving very soon. He had never seen an estate quite like this, fully staffed, and near every square inch covered with marble. Collette struggled to contain his excitement, his grins were unstoppable. There was absolutely nothing that could ruin his night.

Adam strolled down the side of the street, his hands in his pockets blending in with the usual hustle and bustle of London's night life. Things where livelier on this particular street due to a party being thrown at a nearby manor. It was perfect honestly. The rich where strolling everywhere on that street, laughing and swaying under the influence of their rich champagnes and cider. He stalked along the edge of the walk and slowed at the entrance to an alley across the street. He pulled from his pocket an old pipe and a little pouch of tobacco. The pipe had been his father's once, an angry old drunk with a lot to say about him as a kid, rarely any of it good. It was a simple pipe carved out of wood with the polish rubbed raw around the little basin and around the mouth bit. It smelled of old tobacco and could have used a bit of clearing out. Adam lit the tobaco and took a few pulls, sucking in the smoke before letting it stream out again from his nose and mouth. He watched as a young musician milled about looking out of place among the privileged. All it took was a glance at the man's posture and the way he glanced at the shadows to know that he was a bit more street smart than the rest of them. Adam made a mental note to keep an eye on him. He doubted he had much to steal....except....His eyes lingered on the instrument case. There was a very good chance that that instrument could fetch him a fair price on the market. Some sort of stringed instrument a fiddle of some kind. He stared at it quietly, considering.

After getting set up, the music really pulled the party together. It was a long party, of course, but Collette was more than happy to contribute. He liked watching the different dances - it was actually very mesmerizing. It only heightened his excitement. Distraction came easily to the small blonde man, he went through several songs at a time, all without realizing something new had occurred to his surroundings. Whole tables were shifted, and Collette couldn't bother to see it.

A little over an hour into the party, it seemed like an intermission took place. Collette was told he could take a break, and it looked like the relentless dancers did as well. The musician wandered around the ballroom, fetching himself a beverage on his way. He watched people pass hesding towards the door which was opened wide to air out the place - one man caught his eye, the most peculiar of all. A large scar stretched across his face, Collette could hardly stop himself from staring, at his expense no doubt. The musician had picked wine rather than water, and wine far too costly for his taste. He left the drink subtly at an abandoned table and kept moving, in someway still keeping his eye on the man with the scar. Eventually, Collette had to tear his gaze, it made him wonder if the man new he was there the entire time.

Adam was a poor man it was evident in his dress, a dark brown overcoat made of coarse worn fabric. There where patches on the elbows and one of the shoulder where it seemed a gash had been made through it. The clothes underneath where in slightly better condition but just barely. He wore a faded green shirt but you could only see a portion of the collar as the rest was covered by the overcoat and a dirty off-white scarf. He wore a vest as well made of a similar poor quality fabric and a pair of pants that didn't quite match. The shade of brown was off and seemed a little more red as opposed to the yellow tinted brown of the rest they where also darker. He wore boots instead of the usual shoes most people wore, either dress shoes or work shoes or loafers. His where heavy boots you'd see on manual workers with thick laces and stains on the soles. His face was what gave a real impression of his likelness. Hard and cold like your every day streetrat. One thick pale scar ran from his temple to the edge of his jaw, cutting across his eyebrow and his sharp cheek bone and cutting across the corner of his mouth before running off his jaw. It was an angry mark and you could almost see the knife as it arced across his face the point barely missing his fragile eyeball in its socket. He was lucky to have his sight. You could even see where the knife had dragged off at the end when he turned his head away from the strike, causing the scar to angle back towards the back of his jaw.

Adam shivered in the chill of the night and crossed his legs to sit on the sidewalk, continuing to watch the house across the street. He crossed his arms and looked up. There was a split second when his gaze settled on Collette's eyes. Adams where a steely grey, and he used their cold appearance to further his menacing stare stony and unfeeling as if he hated him for being fortunate enough to eat and drink that evening. Adam made up his mind. He would select one other victim to which he would mug, then follow this sap and steal his instrument. Surely some merchant would pay big coin for it.

The scarred man stared back at him for only a moment.

Collette had separated himself from the crowd - just far enough to feel alone. He had placed his instrument carefully back in its case, and now had it slung over his shoulder with a leather strap that knotted at each end. It was waring and likely wouldnt last the year, but it was good enough for now. The instrument he carried was a viola, one that looked as if it had been made from a flower. The edges curved and waves, much in the influence of some kind of petal. There was no viola entirely like it on earth, and Collette was certain of this.

He sat down on the steps of the estate, cooling himself down a bit before the next dance. The bitter taste of wine remaining in his mouth. He searched the gathering of people for the scarred man, but he had escaped Collette's sight in the blink of an eye. The musician hadn't bothered to search much longer, letting his gaze wander more freely.

Adam had wandered out of the musician's line of site slipping climbing the gate and working his way through hedging. Normally he wouldn't go through this sort of effort in this sort of job. All it took was waiting until the party ended but curiosity had gotten the best of him. Besides...there was a certain rush gained from taking a risk like this. He walked along the edge of the property skirting around the area where carriage drivers and chauffeurs loitered on the neat gravel drive smoking their own pipes and cigarettes and discussing unimportant things. Adam stuffed his hands into his pockets and approached the building, taking cover in the shade of the manicured bushes. He peered in through a window, paying mind not to step into the light where the guests could see him. He observed the guests, took note of the few who where enjoying the wine and champagne a little more than they should and those with the more expensive accessories. Necklaces decorated with jewels and watches of rare metals things he could sell. He noted a few including a beautiful red haired woman with pearls that could possibly be real. He couldn't be sure from that far. He hesitated again spotting the musician fetching some wine for himself. "Red wine? Good taste. Enjoy it while you can." He mumbled.

The musician still sat on the steps, staring down at the people that furthered themselves. He rubbed his hands together, the chill of the cold really only getting to his nose and fingers. Shifting, he realized how much he disliked his own formal wear - none of which was custom, many of the pieces were too loose or uncomfortable. High waisted pants seemed like too much of a hassle and yet he wore them this evening, shaded in charcoal grey with four brass buttons that reached up his navel.

Sooner than later, the odd little intermission was over and Collette was back in the ballroom with a group of a couple other musicians. The party seemed to last for ages after that, song after song to no end. Several drunk, older women had been eyeing him for a while, which kept him somewhat entertained, but Collette couldn't help but imagine the scarred man and his venomous stare. Nothing could distract him from that.

Adam waited and waited until the party itself was over. His legs had gone numb from sitting in one position for so long and he had nearly fallen asleep. A few hours ago he'd left his spot under the window to lurk in an alley a few houses down, close enough to see the road and the house where the party was but not so close as to be spotted by every privileged member who walked by. It was the sudden flux of people dressed in furs and fine suits that brought his attention back to his task. He upended his pipe and tapped it to let the ashes fall then tucked it into his pocket, his eyes following an intoxicated woman and her date. He slipped out from his alley and followed them, hands tucked into his pockets until they got to the darker side of the road. He threw a punch at the back of the man's head, shoving him against a brick wall where he slumped over unconscious and yanked the woman close clasping a hand over her mouth just as she started to scream. "Shut your mouth or I twist your pretty little neck in two." He hissed viscously. He yanked her into the alley tugging her purse off her shoulder before knocking her over the head as well. He dragged the man in as well to keep them hidden together and dug through the purse, hands still trembling with adrenalin. He found a bit of jewlery and a small wad of cash on her and a decent looking watch as well as a larger wad on the man. A really good find. "So kind, contributing to the less fortunate in this city, sir." He chuckled over the unconscious man and spit on the asphalt beside him before tucking his finds into his pocket. "Now to get me a Violin."
