Tue Jun 20, 2017 5:37 pm Mystress My username on RPA is Mystress of Onions (though I usually just go by Mystress). I would also like to say that I joined the site in February of 2014, and I am not nor have I ever been a mod. I have not been a Member of the Month, either. As such, you can trust that my opinion is not influenced by having power in the site.

I will start off by saying that a few years ago, yes, there was some drama. The mods expressed being entirely overwhelmed by the ridiculous arguments and the size of the site, especially with the many, many events they ran throughout the year. They expressed that they feared it may turn into another "Dark Days" time for the site where the site would be overrun by negativity, elitism, and inadequate moderators. Note that they themselves said they feared they were inadequate. There was a time that they blocked all new blog posts until they were reviewed because of the overwhelming number of crude and unnecessarily rude posts that were being made.

I left the site for a bit during all of this. I left not because of everything going on, but because I had a lot going on in my own life. I recently returned, and i am both happy and sad to say that there are some significant changes. A lot of members are no longer active on the site, unfortunately, the toxic and nontoxic ones alike. There is minimal negativity now, but it is still a tense atmosphere, only because the site is dying, and it breaks my heart. I met some of my closest friends on this site, as well as the love of my life. I created the best world I have ever created through this site and have had some amazingly in depth conversations with people.

There aren't nearly as many new people joining now than before, and I feel like it's because of the bad times RPA went through in 2009 and 2014. The mods there are truly caring people who have learned a lot from the experiences in those times. RPs used to die out because the GM would suddenly poof, or half of the members would either poof or realize they're in too many RPs. This isn't really possible now, with a max of 3-5 new RPs made a week compared to the old 3-5 a day. The writers on this site are typically strong writers, and as long as you show a genuine interest and effort (even if you aren't the strongest writer), you should be quickly accepted into the group. Yes, you'll need to participate a bit to become better known, but for a site this big, even if only a few hundred members are considered active, this is understandable. Stick around, and people will see that you're dedicated.

The only reason it might be hard to get started as a new person is the fact that there used to be an influx of 5-10 new members every day, most of which would disappear within a week with absolutely no notice to any RP they might have joined. Often, they would post two or three times and never come back online. Because of this, the members of the site are slower to accept new people. Stick around, and you'll see that people quickly warm up to you. (Just don't do what I did - and greatly regret btw - and leave the fighting tournament halfway through the finals, and you should be just fine.)

I would really love to see this site come back to life, despite the bad rep it received in the past. I hope rating this site as a 10 will help counteract the unproportionately negative reviews. To be honest, I would rate it at an 8.5 due to the troubles it has faced and the fact that the community size has since greatly decreased, but otherwise, it is fully deserving of the 10.

Wed Mar 26, 2014 7:22 am gee Without a doubt the absolute best place to roleplay on the web! I was a serial site hopper from the age of eight until I discovered this place a little over three years ago, and I've never wanted to stray since!

Aside from the awesome and varied rp's to get involved with, RPA has a massive social aspect too, as well as a creative section where you can show off your skills in really any creative area, and check out the other members' talent (which there is definitely no lack of)

The community is active, close-knit and always ready to welcome a new friend, no matter their previous experience, and the staff are more than happy to help with whatever problem/question/issue you might have.

It's become my second home, and a warm and welcoming one at that!

Fri Apr 12, 2013 3:12 pm MedixTheCreator Best roleplaying site I have been to, if I can be completely honest. The community is the greatest part. So warm and welcoming, these people. Not a single mod is condescending or unfair. Only unity and comraderie are encouraged here. Not only that, but it's active. Roleplays are always running, and new ones show up all the time. Members are encouraged to show off their art or participate in special contests. Roleplays are encouraged to stay alive.

This place really is wonderful.

Fri Apr 12, 2013 2:50 pm Krahe My very favorite roleplaying site of all time! I've been on several, but this one has the biggest diversity of writing styles and levels, lots of different games and stories, contests for members, and places for poetry and artwork.

While the layout might seem intimidating to those who aren't used to it at first, it's really easy to get the hang of and actually extremely organized. The staff is amazing and is very helpful. They'll hold your hand and walk you through anything you might want, or they'll give advice here and there if that's what you'd rather have.

The best! I love it!

Mon Sep 12, 2011 8:18 pm The Aristocat Ever since the very start of my Role playing career I'd been a bit of a drifter, joining a lot of forums but never really settling in and joining the community as such. That changed once I joined RPA, the people are friendly, welcoming and accommodating, the writing is mostly superb and both members and staff are more than happy to help new members ease their way not only into the site but RPing itself.

Once you've spent about five minutes getting your bearings the site is easy to navigate and jump into writing and socializing right away. The members are patient with new members and write fantastically well across every genre.

I would recommend this site to anyone in a heart beat, its a vibrant, friendly community and a great place to improve your writing while having buckets of fun in the process.

Mon Sep 12, 2011 6:51 pm merryg I've never been to a site that is more helpful, friendly and fun. The members all participate in amazing ways and the site is virtually drama free. Any level of player can go there and find something to participate in, and enjoy! The staff is helpful, regardless of if you need help on how to get started, or have a game you need to get players for. You just need to ask. You won't find a better place to hang and RP. 10
Mon Sep 12, 2011 2:44 pm E_B So I've been a member of RPA for a long time now and I must say that I love this site. No matter what I always seem to come right back to it, even after I don't think I'm going to go back to roleplaying when I take a break. The members and staff are both friendly and helpful, especially to new members. Plus the RP's are just rockin'. Every time I go through and look to see what ideas people have I'm just blown away! But not only is RPA a site for one to RP but it's also a place for people to go and show other their creative side without fear of ridicule. I mean when it comes right down to it there are some amazing artist at RPA.

So if you're looking for a roleplaying site that has friendly members and staff, a larger selection of RP's with awesome ideas and twists, and a overall place to just be you and even show your creative side then RPA is without a doubt the place for you!

Mon Sep 12, 2011 1:50 pm nazguljcg The following is directed mainly at tinyartist18. Now the staff at RPA understand that site can be somewhat confusing to new members; and if asked, they will help. As far as RPs not getting attention, there are a myriad of ways to advertise an RP and talking to the staff about this will allow any RP on the site to get exposure. And about us lacking in the elite RPer department. RPA is now, has always been, and always will be a place for RPers of any level. All are welcome, and quite frankly, there are a lot of "Elite" (and god I hate that word) RPers on the site. And with respect to your character being ignored in an RP as you weren't "part of the group" This is also something that should have been brought to a staff members attention and it could have been attended to. But I guess it's easier to come here and say how bad our site is than trying to improve your experience, something that any of the staff members would be more than happy to do if you would take a minute to talk to them 10
Sat Oct 10, 2009 4:58 am Gabe Zero I'm not concerned about the group of trolls over at Ethereal Lights impersonating me and the other members of my community. It doesn't make a bit of difference after being a part of a community that has been around for three years. I've seen communities attack larger communities before, because they are jealous and they want what they can not have. Any bitterness and tension they have now, will lead to their own downfall and destruction a few months from now.

RPA is a great forum with a stable staff and member base at it's core. Every now and then we get a few nutjobs who think they are hurting us by advertising and mimicking our forum layout. However RPA is the real deal and the imitators never last for more then a year.

=)

Thu Oct 08, 2009 6:45 pm ZanNight Wow. This site is so friendly to new members! It's a real great place for new people to join! All new members are welcomed! 10
Mon Oct 05, 2009 4:45 pm mysti veils I have been a huge fan of RPA ever since I became interested in rp'ing. RPA is one of the best rp sites I have ever had the pleasure of finding on the net. It's friendly atmosphere is welcoming and everyone is very helpful. There are many rp's to join along with various other ways to be involved within the RPA community. The people there are friendly and courteous and always go out of their way to help out a fellow rp'er.

I would higly recomend RPA to anyone who is looking for a laid back atmosphere in a role playing community. There is something to be foud there for everyone

Sun Oct 04, 2009 7:17 am x-bella-xx I am a HUGE fan of Roleplay Adventures. It is by far the best roleplaying forum I have ever come across. With a wide variety of RP's to join, an extremely active out of character community, friendly members and staff along with much more, Roleplay Adventures is one site that you can't afford not to join. 10
Sun Oct 04, 2009 12:04 am quitecontrary I must say I absolutely love Role Play Adventures. This site is truly amazing. As a new player to the RP world I was a little nervous when I first started out. I quickly learned that this site is not only full of amazing and super writers and role playing games, but that the member are outstandingly helpful and nice. The staff bends over backwards to help you out, find you stories to join, and maintains a positive and comfortable atmosphere. With that kind of support it's not wonder the membership is so large and so loyal. It is truly a wonderful place to while away the hours Role Playing and to have a alot of laughs. Highly recommend such a super site! 10
Sat Oct 03, 2009 9:26 pm LuckyBlackCat Roleplay Adventures is by far one the most impressive roleplaying communities I've ever been a part of. The site is composed of members of all skill levels, styles of writing, ages, and taste in genres. The members are friendly, the staff is helpful, and the hardest part about joining the fun is getting yourself to log off... ever. There are active roleplays to join in every category, hundreds of members, and even a fair share of forum games to participate in. Roleplay Adventures is a friendly fun place to write collaboratively with other people who share your interests. 10
Sat Oct 03, 2009 7:33 pm DarlingDay Roleplay Adventures is one of the friendliest, funnest sites I've been to in a long time. With an easy to use interface, helpful staff, and wide variety of roleplayers and roleplay games, I felt at home almost immediately. I had never roleplayed before I joined this site and had many members who offered their time and skill to help me learn how to write better and express my ideas. If you're looking for a roleplay community that is more than just another forum, this is a great place for you. 10
Sat Oct 03, 2009 6:16 pm Serendipity Roleplay Adventures is a wonderful site with a variety of roleplays, an active Out Of Character and In Character community, fair and capable staff, talented artists and writers, and all in all, everyone is like a close-knit family. I honestly suggest at least taking a look at this website if not join it. :] 10
Thu Sep 16, 2010 10:32 pm LoveliiMonsta I joined about a week ago and I have to say it's actually nice and better than most role plays, but I am quite new but was accepted warmly and met friends on the first day! The mods, Blue_Tornado, and old members like SikstaSalathin or of the like were very nice and was promoted to 'member' in five days. ^^. My significant other also is on the site and usually he is quiet on sites while I'm the talkative one actually met some friends. There is no drama that I have seen and no rudeness like most role play sites. 9
Mon Oct 20, 2014 9:48 pm AngelicAsylum I'll try to be as unbiased as possible.

I joined RPA way back, maybe about seven years ago or so. It's a huge forum, there are a TON of RPs to choose from, and there are plenty of threads to keep yourself occupied. You can run your own private/public blog, and there are art contests, writing competitions, and a million different ways to get involved.

The issues I have with the forum are deeper, however, and aren't visible immediately upon visiting. The first thing I will say is that, like anywhere, there's favoritism. Yes, you will be greeted upon arrival and people will be basically polite to you while you're there, but only an elite bunch get replies to their threads or become well known, and persistence in posting has nothing to do with it. It's all about who you know and who you reach out to, so if you want to make a large group of friends you really have to participate in every aspect of the board and hope to find a group that likes you.

I know that the board boasts "RPs for all level players" but I have to say that that's really not the case. Most of the RPers are not stereotypically bad but they are the definition of "superfluous" and "long winded" so you better have about a month to read through one fifteen page post. Many characters are flat and one dimensional, and it's common for characters to go unnoticed in RPs, mostly because many of them are just too big. Dying out is a common problem on RPA, and I've been in plenty but never saw any of them come to completion due to bad mods, or members who just don't post.

Now, lets discuss the mods. On RPA, they try to have an "everyone is welcome!" vibe that can actually bite them in the ass. What Ace said is 100% correct - if someone has a damaging or harmful "opinion" it MUST be respected. Calling them out is never allowed unless you are as sweet as pie about it, and even then if a respectful argument happens it will eventually be closed by the mods.

I cannot COUNT the number of times I have reported incredibly sexist, offensive members who say things like "women are asking for it" only to have them tell me that I have to respect their opinion. Once, a moderator actually compared homosexuality to pedophilia, and when I called him out he not only gave me a warning, but he closed the thread. I don't name call and I always remain calm and respectful, but the very fact that I spoke out to the mod alone was enough for a warning.

On RPA they would much rather warn or ban the person who gets angry because their identity is being attacked by one of these damaging and hurtful "opinions" than discipline the person who has the bigoted view in the first place. Not all opinions are good opinions - saying racist nonsense is not the same as an opinion about the weather.

I stopped going there because I refuse to respect oppressive bullshit. I'm tired of long winded posts that say absolutely nothing and RPs that die out within a month because they can't get RP member #23 to make a post. It wasn't the place for me, even when I was extremely active.

Sat Aug 20, 2011 1:39 pm tinyartist18 Terrible site. Unwelcoming, confusing, and not organized.
They have a "unofficial/official" member list that's very offputting

If you're an elite RPer, you won't find many people up to your level here. I tried to get involved with multiple RPs before launching my own. The first few were highly unsuccessful (I wasn't "in" with the group, so they ignored my character) and my personal RP was ignored almost entirely.

Mon Oct 20, 2014 9:17 pm Ace of Hearts Do not believe the other reviews on this site, which have been created by the mods of said site. RolePlay Adventures is a cold, godforsaken place.

Let's start with the staff. I have never ONCE seen more nepotism than I have at this site. For the long time, anybody who was made into a Member of the Month would get a Moderator offer extended to them, whether they deserved it or not. This often led to mods who were overworked due to inexperience. Secondly, the staff will ONLY ever step in until blatant flaming occurs. If someone is, say, being an ass but in a polite manner, the staff will not lift a finger. But as soon as someone lashes out against said ass, the mods are quick to punish them, not the provoker.

The community is just as awful. If you want to be friends with anyone, do not share opinions about anything to anyone at anytime. Expressing yours will only lead to an influx of trolls to insult you. Oftentimes, if you disagree with anyone, they'll cry to the mods and say you're attacking them, simply for disagreeing, no matter how politely you do it. And the mods will close any line of discussion they don't like.

Certain members are also allowed to express horribly ignorant and harmful opinions, as well, without any official punishment. This often leads to more progressive, forward thinking members becoming annoying, and any resulting discussion will often degrade into flaming by either party. Of course, once the staff is brought it, warnings are given out to the people who were simply offended by ignorance.

The staff works under the childish delusion that all opinions must be valued, no matter how harmful or ignorant. They treat it as if you were speaking of a movie or game, not important issues such as civil rights. You're allowed to have racist/sexist/homophobic views, as long as you don't personally insult anybody.

If you think, "well, hey, a roleplaying board isn't meant for politics" that's fine, except the site is filled with godawful games, to boot. If you like rehashed anime schools for demons then, hoooboy, you're in for a treat. Any game that is of any possible substance usually dies out within a month, leading to the members scattering into the wind. You'll have a better chance looking elsewhere for a personal roleplaying partner than taking your chance on this site. If the game isn't bad, the characters will be.

Seriously. For your own good, dear reader, stay away from this site.

It is a cesspit.

Sun Feb 13, 2011 4:22 am Dark Link M Smith it's all for show and when you do get in they ban you if you dont like it. dont even go there. 1
Sun Aug 22, 2010 6:15 pm Father Mudkip I spent a short time in these forums under a SNEAKY!! account, to test the atmosphere, as per an RP partner's request. My friend had claimed that the site was full of drama and that the administration were pretty much just shitty people in general.

She was right. :|

the layout is nice, albeit overly complex, but the membership is cliquey, you have to jump through ridiculous hoops in order to have the most basic member rights, and as has been clearly shown, the administrator is merely a power-hungry pig

suggest you pass on this one

Sun Oct 18, 2009 10:55 pm Midgardsomer I had a friend who went by mosaic who brought me on this site, and it was fun for a while. But things went bad and my friend branched off and made his own site. The head admin found out and wasn't too happy about this and took my friends link and spammed it on another site.

And after doing this to another board or two that branched from some of his other members, and after being told this by Mosaic, i took the liberty of using a new account I made since I had changed residence, and let the members know what was going on.
My friend told me what Gabe did and I took it into my own hands to let the members know what was going on since he was spreading a lie. He had spammed the last site out of hatred, and he had been reported and received a warning from Zetaboards and told that he would be monitored, and is switching boards because of this calling it an "upgrade" HA.

Gabe is nothing but a forked tongued snake who's words cannot be trusted.

And as for my little informing of the members, well lets just say they removed it rather quickly. But hey, I got my bitch slap in on gabe, thats what he gets for banning me for no reason the first time, just because I was associated with someone he no longer liked.

You wanna know what to expect? Expect a site that once focused on RPing but moved to focusing on spamming just to raise the boards post count. Expect a site that if you are accused of something, even if you're innocent, the staff won't do shit to properly look into it, and you'll receive whatever punishment they can dish out to you without giving you a chance to defend yourself.
Expect a head admin that if you make your own site and he gets the link, he will immediately troll and spam your site on various sites, and probably even 4chan.

Sat Oct 10, 2009 10:03 am Midnight Insanity I was on this site for a time. I did enjoy the first month or so, until I saw the underlying drama. Drama courses through the veins in this site, it's seems to be what keeps it alive. Who's doing what? Why was so and so banned? It got tiring and frustrating.

The admin, Gabriel Zero, never seemed to tell the straight forward truth either. Always covering it up with lies. It was like a game to figure anything out, and you usually didn't. All they want is obedient Roleplayers who seem to have no drive of thier own. Cause once you get some drive, you're booted out of there.

Proof of his paranoid and low behavior can be found on the Ethereal Lights section of this directory. Where he continues to flame us because he's jealous of our fastly growing community. But we are yet to be competition Gabe! Get over yourself! We don't want RPA's left overs.
1
Thu Oct 08, 2009 6:53 pm syrensong Obviously, this roleplaying site does not play by the rules. The administration and staff alike are hateful and unwelcoming. They've set people up, framed people, bashed people. This is hardly the place you'd want to hang out if you're looking to roleplay.

By the way, it wasn't any of us who created the lame Gabriel Zero account. Way to be a loser.

Thu Oct 08, 2009 4:31 pm Gabriel Zero RPA does not meet the needs of most, just the elite. 1
