Does Mind Affect the World?

Tips: 0.00 INK Postby dealing with it on Sun Oct 16, 2022 7:00 pm

Do mental events affect the physical world? Or is consciousness just a side-effect, an accident, of behaviour? This view is epiphenomenalism, and I find it more insidious than solipsism. If mind is nothing more than “the steam of a locomotive”, then intelligence is necessarily an emergent phenomenon that cannot be simple.

In the Penrose-Hameroff theory of Orchestrated Objective Reduction, known as Orch-OR, these moments of conscious awareness are orchestrated by the microtubules in our brains, which—they believe—have the capacity to store and process information and memory.

He further goes on to possit consciousness is a wave and existed before human life. The mind is inherently more complicated than a locomotive. He starts with the premise that consciousness is not computational, and it’s beyond anything that neuroscience, biology, or physics can now explain. “We need a major revolution in our understanding of the physical world in order to accommodate consciousness,” Penrose told me in a recent interview. “The most likely place, if we’re not going to go outside physics altogether, is in this big unknown—namely, making sense of quantum mechanics.”

Anyone who has ever been forced into a survival situation knows that the saying "Mind over matter" has some basis of truth to it. Sheer willpower has the ability to manipulate and change the rules of nature. The brain produces adrenaline in tough situations, which can enable people to do some amazing things, some of which even defies logic or what scientists think is humanly possible. Indeed, there is much to be left unsaid and unknown about the subconscious mind. Perhaps we will never fully understand. As far as things like telekinesis or the ability to read people's thoughts, or influence events via one's own magical intent or imagination, I don't think it works that way, but I could be wrong. However, one thing is absolutely certain. The mind does completely effect the world, and indeed, the universe, at least on an individual and personal level. So perhaps it is also possible that the mind can change the course of events or situations that otherwise would have a different outcome or result than if that intention was not present to begin with. Just a thought. How much the mind effects the world is a different matter entirely. But it is definitely my opinion that the answer to the original question, "Does Mind Affect the World?" is a resounding "Yes".
