Sounds interesting so far, but would you explain what you mean by 'social gamers?'

I do have a bit of criticism concerning the players, on and offline, depending on how popular this game is I think it'd be pretty easy for the police to figure out the connection between these comatose people once the body count starts piling up. Then various governments would catch wind of this happening, and they would take necessary action against this company. Unless this is supposed to take place in some dystopian future where it's okay to do this? Also, why is the company doing this to people in the first place, what is there to gain from making them beat the expansion pack? O.O"

Maybe you could have some disgruntled employee upload a virus into the mega-server and the 'soul trapped in game' is a random side effect and it affected only a few guilds or something? I think it'd be better to keep the numbers small so as to not raise suspicion and unaffected players think it's some weird joke when a character tells them they're trapped and can't log out. They might never have guessed that such a thing could happen, and they themselves are trapped in the game too and are trying to destroy the virus from inside it.

There is an anime called Sword Art Online where the game developer purposely trapped everyone who was playing the game at the time, in the game. He knew a lot of gamers wished their lives were like video games so he decided to make that their reality. It was his ultimate masterpiece. In the real world if the headgear the player was wearing was removed they died, if they died in the game, the head gear sent a shock straight to the brain that would do a insta kill. The police hunted down the game developer, but he'd killed himself. Could be a reason.

Which ever reason we choose, I just want to remind you guys that I wanted this rp to be more of a slice of life than about trying to "escape the game"

Oh, I totally agree. Slice of life sounds good, I just thought traping our chars inside the game will make us concentrate on our IG life.

Or an alternative to both; rather take a copy of the data of the brain and dump it on a mega-server that co-exists with player servers, essentially recreating the conciousness without affecting physical body and giving it new (albeit digital) life, making it a very complicated legal matter, allowing for a game without too much interference from the outside (unless of course made a plot point, which can explicably be delayed because of RL debate.) Just remove permdeath and keep respawn in to differentiate from SOA. It would allow slice of life, but because the game would stop being escapism people can back out of anytime they want, you'd be able to add actual drama to to the perceived reality and permanence of their world and the inability to escape it. Hey, forever who is into that, it'd even open up for various philosophical questions about what is life, identity and even individuality and such.

Though of course this makes it difficult to portray themes like the influence or real life on the virtual one and vice versa, which is interesting but because it forces things to happen on a lot of different planes, is difficult to work with in an RP. It'd be a challenge, but if there's support for it and you're up for it as a GM, that'd be interesting.

A faction-war like giants versus elves, or horde versus alliance WoW-thing, works in MMO's because there's a better guarentee of both sides being replenished with numbers all the time, something that doesn't follow with RP's because they're much smaller in scale. To put up something like that you'd need both sides to be supplied with players constantly, which brings with it numerous issues I would find hard to deal with. While I'm all for splitting people in smaller teams to allow for faster plot progression, these teams should be flexible to deal with inevitable player drop-outs. Faction versus faction makes both teams reliant on one another, and as such the RP much more fragile. Though of course, a faction-war would be an interesting 'history' component.

I'm in for that expansion, perhaps also raising a level-cap or incorporation of a new system that allow PC's to grow in power or versitality (sub-classes are pretty nice.) Rebirth might seem interesting, and again, in an actual game it is, because you have a community at all levels. However, unless you make levelling trivial and fast, this will put players on a lot of different power levels, limiting how they can play and interact with others.

Speaking of classes, I would personally enjoy some player freedom here, although I do think roles should be robust. You have the holy trinity (dps, tank, support) which a class could ascribe to. However, you can further specialise this by making single target dps classes, or AoE dps classes. Or moderately powerful with blazing speed versus damage-cap breaking numbers, but slow attack speed. Support with high HoT in the form of regen versus support with instant heal (but comparatively less HoT) and of course one could have offensive support, while the other would have defensive support. Or perhaps you make a support with lots of CC to prevent damage from being dealt in the first place. ie, if I create a class I should tell you what kind of role my class would play, and if it's hybrid it has to be less effective in a single role than a specialised class, which is a fair price to pay for versitality and therefore requiring less support.

Races are fun, but class-restrictions and stat-diffentiatations are annoying. If you want to play an orc cleric, or a hobbit berserker, you should without receiving twenty penalities for it. Though of course, with flexible classes this can be played around. I'm for player-created races, as long as there's no explicit advanatage or disadvantage latched onto it. Your mermaid shouldn't have a 50% water resistance and 50% lightning weakness based on their race.

Jobs, like I'm guessing miner, blacksmith, farmer, etc. are nice. But think well about what role you want them to fill, because if they have direct combat-uses that's annoying for balance.

Stat- and leveling-systems are cool, but only if they're good. Real good. If you're confident you can make a a strong, meaningful system that rewards players and allows to keep track of character growth, that works really well in MMO RP's. If not, though... Eh... Don't bother.

Anyway, there's some WoTinput. I'm not sure if I'll be able to be active in this RP or even make a character until next week or so, but I'm potentially interested and will let you know once everything is up and open.

What does AoE, HoT, and CC stand for? o.O

I actually like the idea of race penalties since, for me anyway, it adds a twist that not unlike the way different pokemon types affect each other.

Area of Effect, Heal over Time, Crowd Control.

Area of Effect means you target a space, rather than just an enemy. Everyone stepping into the target space is affected by the ability.

Heal over Time means that instead of all HP being instantly healed when the spell hits, the spell will heal smaller amounts over a period of time. Sort of like a reverse poison status effect (which would be Damage over Time; DoT)

Crowd Control are spells that help you deter enemies without killing them, usually targeting groups of enemies. Status effects like blind, disable or sleep are common kinds of crowd control. There's soft crowd control, which essentially hinders enemies but doesn't stop them from acting (blind,) and there's hard crowd control which prevents them from acting (sleep.)

The reason I don't like racial differences is because in an MMO we usually try to maximise on our given roles. If the orc has the best strength, likely every DPS warrior will be an orc. If dwarves have the best defence, likely every tank warrior will be dwarves. MMO's that have significant gameplay differences between race usually give up character variation in favour of lore (which I personally find to be a poor design decision.) Of course, this entire argument can be made irrelevant depending on the class and race system that is used in the RP, as well as the obstacles designed to be thrown in the players' paths. Because RP's have that much more freedom in comparison to MMO's.

If this is gonna become so deeply integrated into the usual MMORPG routine, I guess you can count me out. I am not interested anymore, if I wanted to play an MMORPG, I would play one.^^

@Carlos_Joaquin, You are aware I have no decisive power whatsoever on what does and doesn't end up in the RP, right? What gets in is a GM-decision, not mine. The GM even repeatedly stated they wanted to focus on slice of life. So don't be silly, your conclusion makes no sense :P

@Kestrel: You briught up some realy interesting points I was getting too. I wasn't going to go that in depth to make it like an actual MMO because I've tried it before and everyone who was on board for it...got sick of it and couldn't handle it. So, it died. I was waiting to get to the character discussion.

Its late at the moment and I'm going to give a proper response later, but you were able to expand on some ideas that I had floating in my head like exiting out permadeath and adding rebirth. The idea you had of data copying the brain and putting it on a overlapping server is genius. I love it and would be so happy if you decided to join this rp or atleast allowed us to use it.

@Seph: Yes, you can. ^^ As long as you adjust them to fit this RP. Are you talking about the Chuck Norris-esque character? I loved that one.lol

But I want everyone one to keep in mind that the terminology that Kestrel used is common in MMOs, so they would be commonly used in our RP.

Re: End Saga: Guildless

Ok so here's what we have so far for the plot.

Game comes out with new expansion. Expansion includes new dungeons, harder enemies and rebirth's which involves new subclasses. The expansion is so difficult that it is unsoloable, so a group of top tier players who've reached the current level cap for the game join together to form a guild to challenge the expansion. On the same day as the launch of the new expansion every player has been playing in the new area receives a message offering them a single Free Rebirth:

Do you feel that you were born into the wrong world?
Would you like to be reborn anew?

Those who answered yes, were able to remake their character, but with a penalty. They were no longer able to log out. Only way out would be to complete the Expansion.

Now, here's the conspiracy,

Once the player accepted the free rebirth, a data copy of the brain was made and dumped onto a mega-server that co-exists with player servers in a different region. In reality there are now two separate players. One who resides in the real world playing the game while also living their everyday life and the data copy that resides within the megaserver. A secret experiment being conducted by the Game Company.

So, what do you guys think? Wanna go with that for the plot?

*floats in, lands on the rooftop*

Sorry I haven't been here like... at all. Net problems and the like. SO far, everything looks good. The plot is more or less up. After a brief skimming, we touched briefly on races and penalties, but have we actually decided on what those races would be?

I'm not really sre what kind of character I would make, maybe a thief or a mage...

Oh, before I forget, my fancee would like to join this RP too. Is that okay?

I want to use both characters. Is that okay? The first one is super serious situation for a guy stuck in his girl character..and the other is super goofy for a girl stuck in her chuck norris-esque reputation based guy character.

Your story kind of confuses me. Isn't there a way we can talk about this like on skype or something?

Kestrel has the right idea.

OOOoooooOOh a nokken. Sweet. :3

I'll just let you guys decide what race your character is and provide a little description about the race in a thread. Race doesn't really matter to me.

Dude, your fiance is more than welcome to join. lol

Well, since everyone is on the subject of CLasses and Sub Classes now. I want to explain exactly what I had in mind for them. Okay, So before the expansion there was a handful of classes i.e Knights, clerics, Warlocks, Rangers, fighters. After the expansion 200 suclasses were introduced and they are more specific classes like Dual Wielding, Assassin, Enchanter, succubus, shaman, guardian.(pretty much anything you can think of. There isn't a set list.) And with the rebirth you're able to combine a Main CLass with a subclass to make a new class.

This is what I had in mind for my character.

Starts out a Warlock, after rebirth gains the Assassin class as well. So, he becomes a stealth mage basically. Sounded better in my head. xD But yeah, Is that over complicating things or does it sound cool?
