EXALTED

For the longest time I've looked at the world of exalted and thought of it as an interesting place. I've toyed with the idea and about how I'd go about bringing it onto gateway. Though it might be a few months away from me actually getting a roleplay up and running, I'd figure i'd test out the general interest someone would have in the setting. The short version is the player will be play as one of the exalted, demi-gods tasked with the protection of creation from various external and internal threats that seeks to undo it. Unfortunate in the time of tumult this sometimes mean protecting it from 'eachother'.

In the beginning there was the Wyld, an endless churning sea of raw essence where reality both was and was not. In this ocean of chaos swam the Primordial, ancient titans so vast that they were worlds onto themselves. Tired of the fending off the eroding waves of the wyld sea the king among them said "Come, let us create a house for ourselves to take shelter from the endless storm, and in this house we may rest in leisure and play everlasting games with our creations." And the others agreed and they set about taking hold of the strands twisting of essence around them and together wove these strands into the form of what men now call Creation. And in this new house of creation they built the heavenly city of Yu Shan, wherein they populated with gods to undertake the task of maintaining creation in the primordial's stead. And upon the earth the created mortals to provide sustenance for the gods in the form of prayer.

And seeing their work finished the primordial's settled down to play their games. But all was not well in this new world the had made, for their servants and children the gods were ill content with their slavery. For the primordial's were cruel masters and uncaring towards what consequences their actions had upon the those they ruled.

And so in secret the gods plotted against their overlords. They could not strike against the primordial's themselves, for these ancients had foresight to weave a geas into the gods creation that prevented them from raising a hand against their creators. But in their arrogance they overlooked the weak and fragile creatures that were mortal kind. And so with aid from the rogue primordial Autochthon they took pieces of themselves and wove into the souls of mortal men and women shards of godly power and from the created the exalted. At the behest of the god the exalted made war upon the primordial's, and in a world shaking conflict eventually unseated them from from their thrones, killing some and imprisoning the rest within the body of their own king. For their service the gods granted the exalted stewardship of creation and retired to the heavenly city to play their games in leisure. The exalted, now the immortal rules of the mortal world, led creation into a golden age of prosperity and wonder.

But such a thing did not last, for the primordial's they had slain did not truly die. So vast were they that death itself could not claim them, and so they sank into the underworld to become the neverborn, dead titan trapped between the existance of life and death. And in their death throws these broken titans spat out a curse upon those that slew them, so that the exalted would be doomed by their own hands.

And take root the curse did, slowly, over many centuries. Slowly did this curse worm it's way into the backs of their minds, poisoning with the ills of men's hearts. Greed, hubris, madness and resentment. One by one this curse undid the virtues of these god-kings whist they themselves were unaware of their affliction. And in the strongest amounts them, the exalted of the solar cast, fell under it's worst effects. insanity griped them, and they became tyrants unlike any other as the committed atrocity after atrocity upon the world they ruled.

Finally the dragon-blooded, weakest but most numerous of the exalted, and the ones least effected by the curse, rouse up at the behest of the Sidereals, the former advisers to the solars, and over threw the golden god kings in a bloody usurpation that once again wracked the world to it's core. The lunars, consorts to the solars, were chased to the edge of creation where the wyld overlapped it's shores in a plane of semi-real space. The sidreal erased the memories of their existence from mortal kind, sealed the captured souls of the solars in a jade prison to prevent their reincarnation, and retreated to the heavenly city of Yu Shan to safe keep creation from the shadows. And the dragon blooded, soldiers now turned conquers, established themselves as the new rulers of creation, begining a new era of the first age that while diminished was once again stable.

But again this era would not last, as from the under world the servants of the neverborn again struck. unleashed onto creation was a terrible plague, a great contagion that killed more that any other war or fammine ever could and the people of creation were weakened. Sensing this weakness from the beyond creations shores the Raksha, unshaped beings of chaos, chose to launch a great crusade to undo the stagnant world or reality. In they swept, killing those who had not succumbedto the great contagion, and destroying whole nations as they eroded the strands of creation, unmaking whole portions of reality that none now remember.

It was only by by virtue of chance and desperation that one young dragon blooded soldier managed to find and activate and ancient super weapon crafted solar's in the first age and banish the Raksha back to the wyld. In the silent wake of this cataclysm, on the stones of the manase that housed the great weapon, this woman pronounced herself the Scarlet Empress and claimed rulership of the world by her right as it's defender. And with the secret aid of the sidreal she built her dynasty by founding The Realm, the mightest nation in all creation. And for seven hundred years she ruled, ruthlessly stamping out descent, cowing lesser kingdoms into subservience and maintaining stability in a turbulent world.

But now that has ended as two factors once again something has happened to edge the whole of creation towards conflict. First was the disappearance of the empress. 5 years ago she vanished without warning and without a trace to where she would have gone. And without her The Realm slowly slides towards a succession crisses as each of the great houses plot to put their own puppet on the throne. And in this fractured and disorganized state the forces of the realm grow ever more unprepared for the gathering forces that plot against it. The servants of the underworld still seek vengeance upon the neverborn's killers, the primordial's imprisoned within hell plot their escape, and at the edges of the wyld the Raksha plan their next great crusade.

But all this pales in comparison to the other factor that will decide creations fate. An event that will be felt in underworld beneath the lands of mortal, and in the soil upon which creation rest, in the wyld beyond it's shores and even in the heavens themselves. For the jade prison has been destroyed unleashing it's contents to enter the cycle of reincarnation once more.

The Solar exalted have returned.

Realizing that i'd probably need drop more details about the setting then the brief summery up there, I figured I might as well drop a link to exalted's tvtropespage.

... And maybe the 1d4chan page as well for a more 'cliff-notes' detail of the world.

Having spent about a year and a half on it, I think I'm about a day or two away from giving this a go.
