Why it happens? It's hard to say. How it happens? That's a little bit easier.
The temperature drops and your body has a different reaction to the cold than that of most people: you become a wolf until it's warm again and you are able to shift back. People have different reasons for keeping things secret; relationships, jobs, sicknesses, their past... but nothing is deadlier than keeping a second life away from everyone else in a small town. Mercy Falls, Minnesota has been a safe zone for those who cry wolf every winter for a long time. After all, the Boundary Woods are home to a large population of wolves, and they're protected by the government. Seems like a convenient place to disappear for the winter without a worry, right?
There is a small werewolf pack living in Mercy Falls and the things they know about their species are vague and small. Like how large bursts of adrenaline can trigger the change from a wolf back into human for a certain amount of time. Or that after shifting back and forth for a number of years, the resistance to cold diminishes and a person changes early in fall and late in spring; eventually, the shifting stops and the person remains a wolf. Also, as a wolf, abstract concepts, such as love, hate, names, and time do not exist. Thought is animal-like and simple. As wolves, they can communicate by sending 'images’ through their minds. This is a very simple language and tends to vanish completely once a wolf becomes human, except under intense emotional situations or when a shift is close. And lastly, the wolves retain their human eyes once they shift, but are otherwise identical to normal wolves. (For more information about the wolves, click here.)
Two young wolves (the yellow-eyed boy and the sinner), driven by their wish to live a "normal" teenage experience in the summer, decide to mingle with the townsfolk and end up meeting two girls. Now they must fight to stay human— or risk losing them forever.
