"I don't get it." spoke a fellow student. Sam frowned, rubbing his temples and breathing deep.
"Jeremy, this is a suffix," he pointed to the paper in front of him, "and this is a prefix." he moved his finger slightly. "This is grade school stuff, how do you not get it?"
Sam had agreed to stay late in the library to tutor a struggling English student, Jeremy. A decision he almost immediately regretted. Sam knew what he was teaching, but he made a terrible teacher. He got far too frustrated when someone couldn't understand, and this made those he tutored very unhappy. But he couldn't quite help it, it was just in his nature.
"Sam, I'm sorry." Jeremy pouted, still unsure of the difference between the two words. Sam had explained it to him multiple times, dumbing it down just in case, but it wasn't sinking in.
"It's fine," Sam sighed, leaning back in his chair, "it's late, your brain isn't functioning to it's full potential at this time of night. Go get some sleep, I'll try and help you tomorrow during lunch."
Jeremy stood, smiling at Sam and picking up his bag from the floor. He shoved some of the books on the table into his bag and looked up at his tutor, "Sam, can I ask you something?"
Confused, Sam nodded, "Yeah, sure."
Jeremy stared at his feet and shifted the weight between them slightly, "Did you...maybe...wanna go out sometime? Like...a date?"
"Uh..." Sam stuttered, unsure of how to react, "Jeremy...you...me...I..." he stood, rubbing the back of his head, "I'm flattered, really, but...you're not really my type."
Jeremy's head shot up, pain evident on his face, "But, I heard you're gay. I mean, that's what everyone's saying. And I've always...had a crush on you, ever since freshman year. I was so excited when I found out you'd be my tutor, I nearly passed out."
"Jeremy..." Sam moved closer to him, putting a hand on his shoulder, "It takes balls to ask someone out, especially another guy, but I would rather us just remain friends. Is that ok?" he didn't want to hurt him, and found it a little cute that he had a crush on him. He'd been asked out many times, but never before by another male. He had formed a reputation for being 'the guy who rejects everyone', due to the fact that he's never said yes. He has, though, asked other people out...but not in a few years.
"I...guess that's ok. As long as we can still hang out, that's all that matters." he paused, "It's not going to get awkward is it?"
Sam laughed loudly, surprising the librarian who proceeded to glare at him. "I promise, no awkwardness. Guaranteed." he held up his hand as if to indicate a scout's honour.
After Jeremy left the library, Sam chose to stay for another hour or two. By the time the library closed, he still sat at his table working. The librarian, a lonely old woman named Evelyn who never smiled, approached him.
"Mr. Willis, the library's closed." she spat out angrily. She was known for having a rude disposition.
Sam lifted his eyes from his workbook, his head remaining where it was, "Evelyn, anybody ever tell you that you've got a smile that light's up a room?" he joked, knowing she had no sense of humour. Her face distorted further as she glared with a fiery rage straight into his soul. "Gotcha, I'll get going now."
He rose from his seat, grabbing his books and shoving them into his shoulder bag. He then tossed it over himself, diagonally hanging across his chest to his hip. He exited the library, walking back to his dorm.
Deciding to take a short cut, he passed by some rather shady looking alley's on his way. He passed by a vandalized wall where a fellow student stood after tagging his message. Coming to a halt, he stared at the graffiti, never before noticing it. He was out of sight, but close enough to examine it fully.
The moment he stopped, he heard the footsteps of a female student approaching from behind him. He moved to the side, hiding behind one of the nearby trees. The tagger turned to look in the girl's direction and Sam thanked his fast reflexes for being able to hide so quickly.
((OOC: I hope it's ok to make a character with an "alternate" sexuality. He's actually bisexual with a tendency to go for men, so he's not actually gay, but I wanted him to be a bit more diverse. Considering how many ACTUAL high school students are gay/bi/lesbian, odds are there'd be at least one in this fictional high school lol.))
