If I may make a suggestion (which you are fully in your right to ignore), how about something along the lines of a vision that tells you to move south towards Quaking Terra. Maybe your character reads an omen in the birds or maybe she's hired to spy.

Though I think for this it will be: Hatchling --> Whelp --> Juvenille --> Young-adult --> Adult --> Elder The size of the whelp, as with all stages, differ between species, though it's more noticeable at later ages.
