Pyxidis [pik-si-dis]
The Compass, a southern constellation.
Pyxidis has more than 10 solar masses and a radius six times that of the Sun. It is about 10,000 times more luminous than the Sun and will eventually end its life in a supernova explosion.
“When a star goes supernova, the explosion emits enough light to overshadow an entire solar system, even a galaxy. Such explosions can set off the creation of new stars.
In its own way, it was not unlike being born.”
