Re: Which illegal drugs should be legal?

Marijuana and psychedelics are fairly benign, and even therapeutic to some individuals. Psychedelics, in fact, can provide highly beneficial perspectives and it is my personal opinion that most people should have that experience at least once. Most of the time, the perspectives that follow one, sing...

Re: Are children born evil geniuses?

Yeah, this is kind of hard to answer. Mentions of the outdated Freudian perspective, and the word "genius" leave me skeptical. Evil is a label we put on actions that in some way intentionally disrupt the flow of our social network and productivity. A genius is a generic term for a really s...

Re: The Rational Person

Is rationality democratic? I recognize that different cultures or time periods would regard different things as rational. But I was rash to word it the way I did because of that. I don't think it is, when I really think back on it. Or rather, I don't think it should be. But I do think it's a good pl...

Re: The Rational Person

The primary characteristic of a rational person is critical thinking. This person must engage in critical thinking often enough to be considered "rational" by a majority of their peers. Characteristics to avoid would be any that inhibit the process of critical thought. This actually can de...

Re: Character Loss =/= RL Tragedy (possible trigger warning)

RP will never compare to real life, but the more it takes over it, the more one might become inclined to feel so. I also know that different players have different styles in regards to character creation. In my experience, there are two types: those who create a multitude of characters, often to fit...

Re: Free Will vs. Determinism

Nobody really knows. But there are certain parts of the brain that are associated with consciousness. When activity is present, we are consciously thinking or are consciously aware, of something. The point of time at which we feel we have "made" a decision is referred to as authorship. Neu...

Re: Truth, Induction and Deduction

Your question in the first response I find has the most "answerability," from my perspective. In one hundred years we've radically changed the quality of our lives and technology and our understanding of the cosmos and the world we live in. The past hundred years has been revolutionary in ...

Re: Truth, Induction and Deduction

We can't, really, if to "know truth" is an ultimate understanding of how all things worked, including things considered to be paranormal. To know this stuff with our current epistemologies just isn't feasible. What we can look at is how memory and cognition can enhance our survival, and at...

Re: Paraconsistency

I think the reason this might be a "fringe" belief or philosophical thought is because there really are no viable uses. Clearly, A equalling A has brought us much farther towards measurable progress and I would even go so far as to argue that resurgent schools of thought within my own gene...

Re: Videogame Longevity

Been awhile since I've been here! Thought I'd drop in and see how things are going. Longest played game has been Oblivion, but I've found that any game that allows mods, has much replayability. Mods are the sole reason I've ever gone back to any game, ever, and the sole reason why they've remained r...

Re: Everyone has a right to their opinion

You can't really police the mind, so criminality is mostly out of the question in modern first-world countries. But.... yeah, beliefs can definitely be harmful. I could probably ramble for paragraphs in this thread like I often do, but I'll just come out and say the belief that global warming does n...

Re: Discussion: Drug Abuse and Addiction

No problem. ^_^ Thoughts on public shaming? Well, it's an advantageous behavior in social primates - there are some species of monkey that actually enjoy getting intoxicated from various things in their environment, and it's common for one that becomes "too dysfunctional" to be shunned by ...

Re: Are You For/Against Marriage?

I don't see a whole lot wrong with marriage, and I feel like those who stand against it are probably a small minority. It might be old fashioned but marriage isn't the aspect of our culture that enforces stereotypes. It's just a contract.

Re: Discussion: Drug Abuse and Addiction

Alright... Here's how it works. I'll try to break this down. Please try to bear with me. Let's start with behavior. The individual actions we make. Behavior is almost like a program, and that program is supposed to modify itself through time to maximize the chances of survival and well-being. This p...

Re: Thought Experiment: Self-Driving Cars

From the perspective of the rider, go for the SUV. As the rider you are aware that there is in fact an SUV there and that would be the best scenario, hopefully protecting yourself and not endangering others too badly. But of course, the car is self-driving. It was programmed, and realistically, it w...

Re: Initiative: Battle Arena

Re: Initiative: Battle Arena

I would support this, I took part in the "arena" of various RP places in the past and it was always a favorite past-time of mine. I was very active in this one, as well. What seems more common now than in the past is a general rejection of the idea of random fighting in roleplay, to the po...
