Re: Is Truth an Opinion?

It is erroneous to quote people out of context. Nietzsche was a nihilist and, if you really followed through with his ideas, the only rational course of action would be immediate suicide Nietzsche argued that man must create his own meaning in an otherwise uncaring universe. He did not advocate sui...

Re: 1x1 Philosophy Battle Arena

aditionally, regardless of your beliefs, it is entirely possible to get them across without being offensive. Anyone who doesn't maintain a respectful tone in such a debate doesn't care about the debate, but rather about belittling the person disagreeing with them. Just so you know. The fact that yo...

Re: Is Truth an Opinion?

It's easy to see how moral arguments are a matter of opinion, even so far as to say no absolute moral principles are possible. But is truth the same way? "There are no facts," said Nietzsche, "only interpretations." To what degree is this "true"? Does truth only exist ...

Re: 1x1 Philosophy Battle Arena

This is the internet. No good comes of mentioning sensitive topics here. No I guess the ability to freely discuss ideas, share information, and debate sensitive topics ever helped anybody. I'll go let all those people who intelligently and effectively enable political efficacy and community involve...

A thread for playing devil's advocate? What's appalling about open discussion?

This is the internet. No good comes of mentioning sensitive topics here.
Also "battle" is pretty much the opposite of what "philosophy" is about.

Re: Is Abortion At Best Justified Homicide?

First of all, Lifecharacter, my hat is off to you, good sir/madam. I would simply like to add this. Regardless of which side of the fence you are on, before you start vehemently assaulting the other, ask yourself three questions: 1. Why do you believe whatever it is you believe? 2. Why do you believ...

Re: Death of Philosophy

I will start off by making a movie quote. "You can't handle the truth!" And that is, ironically, one side of "the Truth". There are many who claim they wish to know the meaning of life, good from evil, or some other equally abused concept. But they do not. What most people wish f...

Re: Everyone has a right to their opinion

Are there beliefs so wrong-headed that they should be criminal? Can beliefs cause harm? Let's start with the simple fact that most advocates of "truth" and/or "justice" do not actually pursue either, and instead use these morally elevated notions to force others into adopting th...

After an extended absence from the site, I immediately stumble onto this and other "curious" topics by the same author.
This is appalling.

Re: Interest Checks: Dark Fantasy Medieval Setting.

This sounds exactly like something I'd want to participate in. Not sure if I want to take the king/heir role, but other than that, count me in.

Re: Interest check for Fantasy RP

While the sounds like an interesting synopsis to a story, it leaves an important question unanswered: what would the RP actually be about?

Re: "Instant" romance - why all the hate?

@Doctor: This isn't a discussion about love and romance in general. It's a question whether "instant romance" in RPs is really as bad as it's made out to be. My own examples were counter-arguments to the reasons this kind of romance is generally considered bad. I kinda got the impression ...

Re: "Instant" romance - why all the hate?

@Romeo: The majority of the time, but not always. But the way this "rule" is being used lately, it's more like they saw someone else do it and decided to add it. Like it's some mandatory thing they must have for a shot at a successful RP, when they might not even be considering the deeper ...

"Instant" romance - why all the hate?

We've all seen it happen, and we've all seen the completely nauseating sappy romance in RPs. I can't say I am a fan of it, but lately I've noticed a lot of people put "no instant romance (or equivalent)" into the actual rules of their roleplays/partner requests. I am not, by any means, adv...

Re: Do you want to play what you want?

You know, this would definitely gain more interest if you didn't force the players to jump through several hoops.

On an unrelated topic, is this meant to be a social experiment of sorts?

Re: Is Truth an Opinion?

Truth is an opinion as far as perception goes. Person A can't handle spicy food, Person B likes it. So, when person A calls something spicy, person B might not perceive the same dish as spicy at all. In this case, we see the same objective reality being perceived as true and false at the same time. ...

Re: Gods of Drevair

Sench. I don't see what 'tone' you're talking about in Bromander's post. Let's see: 1. Calling legitimate concerns "bullshit"; 2. Passive-aggressive behavior; 3. Condescending comments; 4. Insulting implications; And a personal pet peeve of mine: 5. Hypocrisy. Not that I approve of blatan...

Re: Gods of Drevair

@Qaida: I don't much like posting order, either. But maybe a 'light' version of one? For example, no more than X posts until everyone had a chance to reply again, or something like that. @Bromander, I don't much like your tone. As for the points you presented: The fight in my opinion went as well as...

Re: Gods of Drevair

Actually, 14 characters in one place is far worse than, say, in 3 different places. The three groups would be more or less independent of one another, and there would be less characters in each.
