My question and discussion topic is this: How can we best take the universe from some of our favorite movies and expand it for a capable and fun rpg? All of my life I've been in love with cinema and I will admit I've always been drawn more to more theatrical rpg's than your other d&d extraterrestrial types. It's just what I like.
Now I know some will argue it impossible or ask me why bother? but I really do believe that when you find a good universe, you write with good writers, and you have fun everything its roleplaying regardless of opinion.
To be more specific about the topic and my earlier question: I've seen a lot of these types crash and burn unfortunately simply because it's hard to take a universe with all the characters it's ever going to have and that you only see mere glimpses of and somehow invent a new character to live in it and make it convincing. One of my favorite aesthetics is 60's mod London, and one of my favorite movies showcasing this is The Boat That Rocked. The premise is there, pirate radio ship out on the water, complete comedic menagerie of characters, and a villain: the government. But how do you take these stories and make them into workable roleplays?
Sorry if this was long winded. I'm eager to discuss opinions.
