Music is Good for the Soul

Tips: 0.00 INK Postby hostilecrayon on Tue Dec 02, 2008 4:31 am

I generally make this thread at any forum I visit because music is so important to me. It is more important to me than just about anything in this world, and I stand firm on the fact that without music, I'd be completely insane. I know there are other people out there who feel the same way, so I'm posting this thread as a place to post the lyrics to songs that are effecting them at the time. Since I made the post, obviously I'll start.

To me, music is more than just entertainment or background noise. It says things that I can't. It conveys emotions in ways that just words never could. Music is life. I invite you all to share the music that you live your life to.

The following song is a song that I have been listening to a lot recently. It really effects me - it says how I feel in ways that I can't.

In Repair - John Mayer

Too many shadows in my room
Too many hours in this midnight
Too many corners in my mind
So much to do to set my heart right
Oh it's taking so long i could be wrong, I could be ready
Oh but if i take my heart's advice
I should assume it's still unsteady
I am in repair, I am in repair

Stood on the corner for a while
To wait for the wind to blow down on me
Hoping it takes with it my old ways
And brings some brand new luck upon me
Oh it's taking so long I could be wrong, I could be ready
Oh but if I take my heart's advice
I should assume it's still unsteady
I am in repair, I am in repair

And now I'm walking in a park
All of the birds they dance below me
Maybe when things turn green again
It will be good to say you know me

Oh it's taking so long I could be wrong, I could be ready
Oh but if I take my heart's advice
I should assume it's still unsteady
Oh I'm never really ready, I'm never really ready
I'm in repair, I'm not together but I'm getting there
I'm in repair, I'm not together but I'm getting there

Thanks, Cuirass. Why don't you post up some lyrics that have meaning for you, as well? After all, it's why I made the thread. =)

What You Thought You Needed - Jack Johnson

I can't give you everything you want
But I could give you what you thought you needed.
A map to keep beneath your seat, you've been to me in time I'll get you there.
I fold it up so we don't find our way back soon, nobody knows we are here.

We can park the van and walk to town
Find cheapest bottle of wine that we could find
And talk about the road behind how getting lost is not a waste of time.

The water moor will take us home in the moment we will sing as the forest sleeps.

Well it's all for the sake of arriving with you
Well it's all .. for the sake of arriving with you

I will make the table into a bed
The candle is burning down its time to rest.
I can't take back things already gone, but I could give you promises for keeps.

And I would only take them back if they become your own and you give 'em to me .

And it's all for the sake of arriving with you.
Well it's all for the sake of arriving with you.

We could make this into anything
We could make this into more than words we speak.
This could make us into anything
It could make us grow and become what we'll be.

Mmmmmm ..
How and we will know
It's just like it feels.

Hmm... There's a lot of songs I love and live by. Though, I think this one I will post below of the lyrics matches me the most closely currently in a spiritual and similar sense on my views of life.

Never Marry An Icon - Pete Burns

There has to be a reason why you stick around in this situation
Even though you say I'm the cause of all your frustrations
I like to change my face on a regular daily basis
Travel around the world to unusual places
I have been arrested for indecent behavior
Who do you think you are taking on a super star?

Never Marry An Icon
To get famous
Never Marry An Icon
They're outrageous
Never Marry An Icon
Rebel rebel to the core
Never Marry An Icon
'Cause they're always wanting more~

First you say you love me and then you tell you got to run then
I should thank my lucky stars that my baby doesn't hold a gun
I like to change my face on a regular basis
Travel around the world to unusual places
Who do you think you are taking on a super star?

Who do you think you are?

Never Marry An Icon
To get famous
Never Marry An Icon
They're outrageous
Never Marry An Icon
Rebel rebel to the core
Never Marry An Icon
'Cause they're always wanting more~

I am Mr. Crazy, Crazy~
I am Mr. Hazy, Hazy - Blue sky baby!
I am Mr. Delight-Diva
Don't you watch the media, baby?

Never Marry An Icon
To get famous
Never Marry An Icon
They're outrageous
Never Marry An Icon
Rebel rebel to the core
Never Marry An Icon
'Cause they're always wanting more~

John Mayer (: Good pick. A song that always gets me is "If You're Gone," by Matchbox 20.

Lyrics:
I think I've already lost you
I think you're already gone
I think I'm finally scared now
You think I'm weak - but I think you're wrong
I think you're already leaving
Feels like your hand is on the door
I thought this place was an empire
But now I'm relaxed - I can't be sure

I think you're so mean - I think we should try
I think I could need - this in my life
I think I'm scared - I think too much
I know this is wrong it's a problem I'm dealing

If you're gone - maybe it's time to go home
There's an awful lot of breathing room
But I can hardly move
If you're gone - baby you need to come home
Cuz there's a little bit of something me
In everything in you

I bet you're hard to get over
I bet the room just won't shine
I bet my hands I can stay here
I bet you need - more than you mind

I think you're so mean - I think we should try
I think I could need - this in my life
I think I'm just scared - that I know too much
I can't relate and that's a problem - I'm feeling

If you're gone - maybe it's time to go home
There's an awful lot of breathing room
But I can hardly move
If you're gone - baby you need to come home
Cuz there's a little bit of something me
In everything in you

I think you're so mean - I think we should try
I think I could need - this in my life
I think I'm just scared - do I talk too much
I know this is wrong it's a problem I'm dealing

If you're gone - maybe it's time to go home
There's an awful lot of breathing room
But I can hardly move
If you're gone - baby you need to come home
Cuz there's a little bit of something me
In everything in you

I find this to be rather true about myself, from the meanings I get from the lyrics, and rather spot on. It makes me sad but I still like to sing this very loudly along the music as it's so meaningful to me.

------------------------

Mispalced - Sonata Arctica

Sometimes I feel so out of time and place, trapped in a maze
As if I was lost in someone else's life...
The values I should keep in high regard don't mean a thing to me

Do you ever feel a need to go back in time? A dream of mine...
To travel far away and one day steal back my life
In the end all I can do is to learn I live in a dreamland

This time was not made for me,
I have nowhere to land, no place to rest,
Like a bird, without a nest, I'm gliding
Under the clouds, forevermore

How much suffocated anxiety can be held within?
I was found guilty to a crime against myself.
No need to hear the words again,
I live and I'd die for my dreamland

This time was not made for me
I have nowhere to land, no place to rest,
Like a bird, without a nest, I'm gliding
Under the clouds, forevermore

I'll never have a chance, I can't understand
I'm a misplaced man
How could this backward land
Learn to understand my dance
what it's like, when every single smile hurts...

I have never felt like home here
Always missing something
People aren't connecting
Am I a misplaced soul?

I live in a perfect Hell, I try finding my wishing well
when I drop my last tear, I have accepted this life

A true saint, that I am not, you have never seen me
'Cause I have always been there, standing by your side

I'll never have a chance, I can't understand
I'm a misplaced man
How could this backward land
Learn to understand my dance
what it's like, when...

Every single moment pains me...
Never felt like home here
I am missing something
My soul's in a wrong shell?

Lately I've been listening to this one by Uncle Kracker. It's really upbeat and happy.

"Good to be me"

Nobody blowin' up my phone.
I aint buzzin' and I aint stoned.
But I'm ridin', flyin', higher than the blue sky.

If you don't like me brother that's ok.
I aint gonna let it wreck my day.
I keep stylin' smilin' handing out the sunshine.

I got no good reason why.

Damn it feels good to be me.
Seats laid back in my Cutlass Supreme.
I'll be alright.
Rollin' these streets all summer long.
Damn, I got it all figured out.
I got no worries that I'm worried about.
It's like I caught some crazy happy disease.
Damn, it feels good to be me.

Bought some cheap shade at the Amoco station.
They make me feel like I'm on vacation.
On my own island, motor city paradise.

Aint it funny how times flies?

Damn it feels good to be me.
T-tops down in my Cutlass Supreme.
I'll be alright.
Rollin' these streets all summer long.
Damn, I got it all figured out.
I got no worries that I'm worried about.
It's like I caught some crazy happy disease.
Damn, it feels good to be me.

Got no particular place to go.
My Alpine's pumpin' some motown soul.
Rockin' to Papa was a Rollin' Stone

Damn it feels good to be me.
Fresh pair of kicks and my old blue jeans.
I'll be alright.
Rollin' these streets allsummer long.
Damn, I got it all figured out.
I got no worries that I'm worried about.
It's like I caught some Coltran love supreme.
Damn, it feels good to be me.

(Coltrane love supreme.)
It feels so good.
(Coltrane love supreme.)
It feels so good.
(Coltrane love supreme.)
Damn it feels so good.
To every U.S. soldier THANK YOU!

I'm not your precious, oh don't you get on your knees.
Cause every motherfucker wants to taste your disease.
I know your torment was just a part of your plans.
You lie to the sky while you're folding your hands.
I know you hate me, cause I'm all that you need.
Close your eyes, say goodbye, I'm gonna set you free!

And cry sister make it rain.
It makes no difference, you'll never see me again.
Cry Sister, Royal Bliss

Decided to post this one just because the content is brilliantly written and oh so true.
(Could be I have a thing for necroposting too. Shhhhh!)

"Skin" by Sixx am

Paint yourself a picture
Of what you wished you looked like.
Maybe then they just might.
Feel an ounce of your pain.

Come into focus.
Step out of the shadows.
It's a losing battle.
There's no need to feel ashamed.

Cause they don't even know you.
All they see is scars.
They don't know the angel.
Living in your heart.
Let them find the real you
Buried deep within!
And let them know
With all you've got,
That you are not.
Your skin.

When they start to judge you.
Show them your true colors.
And do unto others
As you'd have done to you.

Just rise above this.
Kill them with your kindness.
Ignorance is blindness.
They're the ones that stand to lose.

Cause they don't even know you.
All they see is scars.
They don't know the angel.
Living in your heart.
Let them find the real you
Buried deep within!
And let them know
With all you've got,
That you are not.
Your skin.

OHHHHHHHH

Well they don't even know you!
All they see is scars!
And they can't see the annnngels
Living in your heaaaart!
So let them find the real you
Buried deep within!
And let them know
With all you've got,
That you are not.
Your skin.

A recent fan of this band--Don't know why I seem to have a chronic disability to like bands other people have heard of, however...
http://soundcloud.com/unitopia/take-good-care

Take Good Care - Unitopia

Sometimes when I wonder, you wonder what we are.
This world of hate and war, you see it from afar.
Why can't we live in peace? A dream we want to share.
One man's journey, one man's happiness. Will we Care?

We see the pain And suffering. I wonder what we'll do.
Well there's gotta be an answer, we gotta think it through.
Why can't we live and love? It's what we all strive for.
One man's journey, one man's happiness. Let's be sure.

Take good care of this world.
We've been given too much to lose.
Shout it from the tops of the mountains to the depths of the oceans below.

When you're alone, all alone,
You reflect on what you see.
A life passes by and another is born,
A new world, let it be.
And if we see our lonely brother,
Will he understand?
We must love one another,
And share all this land.

We have to find a resolution to help us through these times.
While suits and ties in ivory towers destroy us with their lies.
Now's the time to make the change, to make it all come true.
One man's journey, one man's happiness. Let it through.

[Take good care of this world.
We've been given too much to lose.
Shout it from the tops of the mountains to the depths of the oceans below.] X [a very large number]

I´m posting the following song because I think the content is very cool and so true.

The Becoming

I beat my machine it's a part of me it's inside of me
I'm stuck in this dream it's changing me I am becoming
the me that you know he had some second thoughts
he's covered with scabs and he is broken and sore
the me that you know doesn't come around much
that part of me isn't here anymore
all pain disappears it's the nature of my circuitry
drowns out all I hear there's no escape from this my new consciousness
the me that you know used to have feelings
but the blood has stopped pumping and he's left to decay
the me that you know is now made up of wires
and even when I'm right with you I'm so far away
I can try to get away but I’ve strapped myself in
I can try to scratch away the sound in my ears
I can see it killing away all my bad parts
I don't want to listen but it's all too clear

hiding backwards inside of me I feel so unafraid
Annie, hold a little tighter I might just slip away

it won't give up it wants me dead
goddamn this noise inside my head

I like this one by Ghinzu. It was at the end of a movie but the lyrics caught my attention.

"The Dragster Wave" Ghinzu

Your love is a dragster wave. It makes us breath like two machines
Flower lust, my hurricane, you turn my blood into gasoline

And we sweat, and it's sweet
And we breath like machines
And we play, and we pray 'til we find hidden sins
And we crash, and we burn every moment in turn
every thing we've learned to forget will return
You'll leave on your knees
You'll cry, I'll please
Combustible tears, destructible fears
And we crash and we burn every second in turn
Every thing that we learned to forget will return. Allright!

And the sun is going over me. Over your sex steam battle face
Over minibars and golgot eyes. Your triple 6 carat ass

Jar of Hearts - Christina Perri

No, I can't take one more step towards you
'Cause all that's waiting is regret
Don't you know I'm not your ghost anymore
You lost the love I loved the most

I learned to live half alive
And now you want me one more time

[Chorus:]
And who do you think you are?
Runnin' 'round leaving scars
Collecting your jar of hearts
And tearing love apart
You're gonna catch a cold
From the ice inside your soul
So don't come back for me
Who do you think you are?

I hear you're asking all around
If I am anywhere to be found
But I have grown too strong
To ever fall back in your arms

And I've learned to live half alive
And now you want me one more time

[Chorus:]
And who do you think you are?
Runnin' 'round leaving scars
Collecting your jar of hearts
And tearing love apart
You're gonna catch a cold
From the ice inside your soul
So don't come back for me
Who do you think you are?

Dear, It took so long just to feel alright
Remember how to put back the light in my eyes
I wish I had missed the first time that we kissed
'Cause you broke all your promises
And now you're back
You don't get to get me back

[Chorus: x2]
And who do you think you are?
Runnin' 'round leaving scars
Collecting your jar of hearts
And tearing love apart
You're gonna catch a cold
From the ice inside your soul
Don't come back for me
Don't come back at all

Who do you think you are?

Old enough to know I shouldn't.
Stupid enough to do it anyway.

Well, I apologize
That your memory serves you more than I can now
You'll have to make sense of my life somehow
Yeah, well, somehow

Well, I close my eyes
We move each piece of armor one by one
Inhale this moment deep into my lungs
Make amends for all I've done

Yeah, yeah, yeah
All of my devils are free at last
And all my secrets revealed
And your permission is all I need to heal

Well, how long have I been sitting here?
I must have drifted off
Like him, not finish any of my thoughts
Forgive me for my wayward song

Yeah, yeah, yeah
All of my devils are free at last
And all my secrets revealed
And your permission is all I need to heal

I wake up in the morning and it comes back to you
I breathe in, I breathe out, it comes back to you
I stare up at the ceiling and it comes back to you
I step out my front door and it comes back to you

The end of my driveway, it comes back to you
Brake lights on the highway, it comes back to you
I could die in Los Angeles, it would come back to you
Yeah

Well, all of my devils, they are free at last
Oh, and all my secrets are revealed, yeah
And your permission is all that I, I need to feel

Well, all of my devils, they are free at last
Oh, and all my secrets are revealed, yes, they are
And your permission is all that I, I need

Permission, Sixx AM

Love this song, fantastic lyrics.

I'm TOTALLY a John Mayer girl. :)
And Coldplay, and Death Cab for Cutie, and all of that other strange stuff. c:

Violet Hill - Coldplay

Was a long and dark December
From the rooftops I remember
There was snow
White snow

Clearly I remember
From the windows they were watching
While we froze down below

When the future's architectured
By a carnival of idiots on show
You'd better lie low

If you love me
Won't you let me know?

Was a long and dark December
When the banks became cathedrals
And a fox became God

Priests clutched onto bibles
Hollowed out to fit their rifles
And the cross was held aloft

Bury me in honor
When I'm dead and hit the ground
A love back home it unfolds

If you love me
Won't you let me know?

I don't want to be a soldier
Who the captain of some sinking ship
Would stow, far below

So if you love me
Why'd you let me go?

I took my love down to violet hill
There we sat in snow
All that time she was silent still

So if you love me
Won't you let me know?

If you love me,
Won't you let me know?

"The streets you're walking on
A thousand houses long
Well, that's where I belong
And you belong with me"

Currently, I'm:
Feeling better. Writing my thoughts out in the form of a letter. :)

Wow, just listened to some of these songs... amazing - music is transforming.

I've always felt deeply affected by the song "Paradise" by Coldplay:

When she was just a girl
She expected the world
But it flew away from her reach so
She ran away in her sleep
And dreamed of
Para-para-paradise, Para-para-paradise, Para-para-paradise
Every time she closed her eyes

When she was just a girl
She expected the world
But it flew away from her reach
And the bullets catch in her teeth
Life goes on, it gets so heavy
The wheel breaks the butterfly
Every tear a waterfall
In the night the stormy night she'll close her eyes
In the night the stormy night away she'd fly
[ Lyrics from: http://www.lyricsfreak.com/c/coldplay/p ... 80626.html ]
And dreams of
Para-para-paradise
Para-para-paradise
Para-para-paradise
Oh oh oh oh oh oh-oh-oh
She'd dream of
Para-para-paradise
Para-para-paradise
Para-para-paradise
Oh oh oh oh oh oh-oh-oh-oh

La-la-la-la-la-la-la
La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la
And so lying underneath those stormy skies
She'd say, "oh, ohohohoh I know the sun must set to rise"

This could be
Para-para-paradise
Para-para-paradise
This could be
Para-para-paradise
Oh oh oh oh oh oh-oh-oh
This could be
Para-para-paradise
Para-para-paradise
This could be
Para-para-paradise
Oh oh oh oh oh oh-oh-oh-oh

(Would have chosen Viva La Vida, but decided on this one cause I was listening to it!)

Otherside Remix ft. Fences - Macklemore

Oh girl, this boat is sinking,
There's no sea left for me,
And how the sky gets heavy
When you are underneath it
Oh I want to sail away from here
And God
He came down down down down down down down down
And said
Nothing

He rolled up asked him what he was sippin' on
Said lean, you wanna hit it dawg?
That's the same stuff Weezy sippin' huh?
And tons of other rappers that be spittin' hard
Yep yep he had 5 up on
When he passed him that Styrofoam
The Easter pink, heard it in a rhyme before
Finally got to see what all the hype was on
And then he took a sip sittin' in the Lincoln
Thinking he was pimpin' as he listened to the system
Little did he know that it was just as addictive as bass
Not the kind of hit from the kick drum
Hot box let the bass bump
Take it to face, gulp
Months later the use went up
And every blunt was accompanied by the pink stuff
But Goddamn he loved that feeling
Purple rain coated in the throat
Just so healin'
Medicine alleviate the sickness
Liquid to fix and it comes with a cost
Wake up, cold sweat, scratchin', itchin'
Trying to escape the skin that barley fit him
Gone, get another bottle just get a couple swallows headed towards the bottom
Couldn't get off it
Didn't even think he had a problem
Though he couldn't sleep without getting nauseous
Room spinnin'
Thinking he might of sipped just a little bit too much of that cough syrup
His eyelids closed shut
Sat back in the chair
Clutching that cup
Girlfriend came and a couple of hours later said his name
Shook him, but he never got up

Never got up, never got up
We live on the cusp of death thinkin' that it won't be us
It won't be us, it won't be us, it won't be us
Nah, it won't be us

Oh girl this boat is sinking,
There's no sea left for me,
And how the sky gets heavy
When you are underneath it
Oh I want to sail away from here
And God
Came down down down down down down down down
And said
Nothing

And he just wanted to act like them
He just wanted to rap like him
Us as rappers underestimate the power and the effects we have on these kids
Blunt passed
Ash in a tin, pack being pushed, harassed by the feds
The fact of it is most people that rap like this talkin' about some shit they haven't lived
Surprise, you know the drill
Trapped in a box declined record sales
Follow the formula
Violence, drugs and sex sells
So we try to sound like someone else
This is not Californication
There's no way to glorify this pavement
Syrup, percocet, and an eighth day will leave you broke, depressed and emotionally vacant

Despite how Lil Wayne lives
It's not conducive to being creative
And I know cause he's my favorite
And I know cause I was off that same mix
Rationalize the shit that I try after I listen to dedication
But he's an alien
I sip that shit pass out or play PlayStation
Months later I'm in the same place
No music made, feeling like a failure
And trust me it's not dope to be 25 and move back to your parents basement
I've seen my peoples dreams die
I see what they can be denied
And "weeds not a drug" that's denial
Groundhog day life repeat each time
I've seen Oxycontin take 3 lives
I grew up with them, we used to chief dimes
I've seen cocaine bring out the demons inside
Cheatin' and lyin'
Friendship cease, no peace in the mind
Stealin' and takin' anything to fix the pieces inside
Broken, hopeless, headed no where
Only motivation for what the dealer's supplyin'
That rush, that drug, that dope
Those pills, that crumb, that roach
Thinkin' I would never do that
Not that drug
Growin' up nobody ever does
Until you're stuck lookin' in the mirror
Like I can't believe what I've become
Swore I was gonna be someone
And growin' up everyone always does
We sell our dreams and our potential to escape through that buzz
Just keep me up, keep me up
Hollywood here we come

Oh girl this boat is sinking,
There's no sea left for me,
And how the sky gets heavy when you are underneath it
Oh I want to sail away from here
And God
He came down down down down down down down down
And said
Nothing
Like a stranger on a grate, or a skylark, or a taper, flying ever upward and knowing of love's satiety. Our dreams beyond the Sun and into the expanse of Night doth sound a quiet hymn.

I feel like I'm going to crash the party with old timer's music. . . Does anyone here know Smashing Pumpkins? I know they don't sing great but when you take a guitar play the simple chords and sing the words it's beautiful.
Especially Disarm. I give you:

Disarm by Smashing Pumpkins (written down by memory)

Disarm you with a smile
And cut you like you want me to
Cut that little child
Inside of me and such a part of you
Ooh, the years burn
Ooh, the years burn

I used to be a little boy
So old in my shoes
And what I choose is my choice
What's a boy supposed to do
The killer in me is the killer in you
My love
I send this smile over to you

Disarm you with a smile
And leave you like they left me here
To wither in denial
The bitterness of one who's left alone
Ooh, the years burn
Ooh, the years burn, burn, burn

I used to be a little boy
So old in my shoes
And what I choose is my voice
What's a boy supposed to do
The killer in me is the killer in you
My love
I send this smile over to you

The killer in me is the killer in you
Send this smile over to you
The killer in me is the killer in you
Send this smile over to you
The killer in me is the killer in you
Send this smile over to you

Little Wonders by Rob Thomas

Let it go,
Let it roll right off your shoulder
Don't you know
The hardest part is over
Let it in,
Let your clarity define you
In the end
We will only just remember how it feels

Our lives are made
In these small hours
These little wonders,
These twists & turns of fate
Time falls away,
But these small hours,
These small hours still remain

Let it slide,
Let your troubles fall behind you
Let it shine
Until you feel it all around you
And i don't mind
If it's me you need to turn to
We'll get by,
It's the heart that really matters in the end

Our lives are made
In these small hours
These little wonders,
These twists & turns of fate
Time falls away,
But these small hours,
These small hours still remain

All of my regret
Will wash away some how
But i can not forget
The way i feel right now

In these small hours
These little wonders
These twists & turns of fate
These twists & turns of fate
Time falls away but these small hours
These small hours, still remain,
Still remain
These little wonders
These twists & turns of fate
Time falls away
But these small hours
These little wonders still remain
