Natural Kinds

Tips: 0.25 INK Postby dealing with it on Mon Sep 20, 2021 7:23 pm

A kind is a category of things that share some or all properties. There are, in general, two kinds of kinds: natural kinds and human kinds. Natural kinds can be said to exist in the real world, whereas human kinds are socially constructed, and only exist in our language.

An example of a natural kind is something like the atom "oxygen". Regardless of our perception of them, each oxygen molecule has 8 protons in its nucleus. A human kind is more like the collection of words that each language uses for "oxygen". Regardless what word we use, the oxygen atom doesn't change.

Is this problematic? How can we be sure that natural kinds exist in the natural world? Is there some hidden essence that they partake in that guarantees that we are actually talking about existents when we talk about natural kinds?

The concept of "true names" you can find many places on the planet throughout history and fiction- usually in that if you know the true name for something, you have an element of control over whatever it may be.

Human kinds lend to an abstract creativity, or an allegory. We'd lose something creatively if we were to project exact concepts from one mind to another.

Consider: the problematic existence of various human kinds reenforce the natural in their state of difference with one another

"Across the nations the stories spread like spiderweb laid upon spiderweb, and men and women planned the future, believing they knew truth.
They planned, and the Pattern absorbed their plans, weaving toward the future foretold."
