I haven't wrote cooperatively with a group of fellow roleplayers in a while. This is mostly due to a busy schedule and lack of time needed to dedicate towards the great level of detail I like in a roleplay. Therefore, my only option is to devote what time I do have towards joining one of the roleplays on this site. Alas, I've found none to my liking, thus bringing me full circle. So here I am, writing this post, in search of a few good men and women to hopefully join me in my roleplaying chronicles.

The roleplay I have in mind is small, a group of five players total will due. However, if that limit is reached and one deemed qualified enough wishes to join? Then I will allow it. Roleplay genre will be Futuristic/Sci-Fi/Fantasy, set in an unknown galaxy on varying planets. Our characters can be whom or whatever we wish; no limits or restrictions, only our own imagination. All I ask: is that each character be substantially different from the next and to try to keep an even gender ratio (but I won't enforce the latter). Unfortunately... I don't have a plot, story-line to follow, nor do I plan to make it an aimless, character driven mass of posts. I would like for our journey to unfold via a narrative told by a traditional Game Master.

The role of the Game Master is to weave our player-character stories together, control the non-player aspects of the game, create environments in which we can interact, and solve any disputes. As players we will react to the surroundings and control only our characters. Needless to say, finding an experienced, skilled, and loyal Game Master is crucial to my roleplay's success and existence. I don't have the skills required for such a role, not to mention my selfish desire of wanting to be in the action. I also lack friends on this site and in life to take the mantle of Game Master, so any assistance in finding someone or interest in the position itself, is welcome.

When it’s all said and done, our characters will be thrown in random scenarios introduced to them in the form of jobs given to them by the one person they all take orders from, The Employer... or whatever ominous moniker their "Boss" has. Our characters can be of any relation we like: a well organized team, motley crew of adventurers, rag-tag band of mercenaries, indentured servants, or unique individuals, each with their own personal stake in the mission and reasons for being there. Their travels will take them all across the universe and put them in situations, such as:

Image
Traversing lush, alien jungles in search of lost artifacts that could fetch them a fortune; shipwrecked, fighting for their lives against savage denizens; or carrying out corporation issued hunting contracts for the extermination of vicious wildlife.

Image
Navigating the cold, empty outer reaches of space whilst escorting greedy merchants and their trade caravans through hostile territory; shooting it out with ruthless space pirates in light-speed, intergalactic dog fights; or answering distress beacons only to discover the ship's crew has become mutated monsters.

Image
Plotting and planning the assassination of high value targets in the fast-paced, smog-filled, mega-cities; breaking into maximum-security prisons to free the justly or unjustly imprisoned; or fencing priceless objects on the black market after illegally acquiring them in a high-stakes heist.

Those exploits and many more will be possible within this roleplay. If it seems overly ambitious, it’s because it is. This games potential relies heavily on the talent of the Game Master. Player-Characters will be mere pawns on the chess board, expendable as well as interchangeable at any time.

As for players and their expectations... everyone must be of a literate level with the abilities of skilled writers and experienced roleplayers. This means you should be able to write a post with limited spelling/grammatical errors, no word walls, no god modding, and without doing anything else considered amateurish whilst staying within the rules of this site. You should be able to distinguish what makes a good post length without preset word count parameters. Lastly, you must know when to post. I won't require anyone to make a certain amount of posts in a day or week; do so when you are ready and required. Just be wary of bombing the thread and notify every one of extended absences. I understand shit happens; ergo I will not kick players or kill off characters, although a replacement may be found to keep the roster full.

Formally, there won't be a standard character application to follow or requirement of a written submission before permission is given to join the roleplay. I will make that decision based on the quality of character and player. Still, I do reserve the right to ask for examples of writing and certain information placed in a character skeleton, if I feel it is necessary. Anyway, if any of this intrigues you, please post your questions and/or suggestions here in the thread.

Welcome to the site! You certainly seem to have quite a bit of enthusiasm for this, and I definitely feel like joining. I've been looking for a good sci-fi for a while. You do realize that even as the GM, you could enter a character of your own anyway. I certainly have a couple ideas of characters I'd like to enter myself, but this GM position you have seems to be a unique experience I wouldn't mind having. Perhaps I'll take on that role if nobody else takes it, but may I enter a character anyway, if I take on the GM role? Also, how soon are you putting this up, I can't wait for it.

Thanks for the welcome, I appreciate that!

Yes, I do realize I could do both... but I prefer to put my all into one role at a time instead of dividing my efforts. While I do feel I lack the tools and talents needed to be a good GM, if need be, I will take the helm anyway and do the best I can.

You can certainly apply for the role if you like. We would have to discuss your qualifications and schedule before the position is yours, though. Additionally, I won't forbid you from having a character in the game, only remind you not to cater to it's welfare.

The roleplay will be ready to go as soon as I have a full cast of players with created characters and a dedicated GM or two. I do plan on taking full advantage of the resources made available with the Roleplay Creator, nonetheless, my primary goal is to get this thing started. Everything else, will come in time.

Mine as well. I'm gonna throw my hat into the ring.

I'm willing to GM or Co-GM, mainly because I've had some experience with that style of GMing, particular the idea of jobs/missions, in two other RPs I've been in. I probably won't be making any main cast characters myself, just support for the others.

Wow, this sounds great! I've recently been on a sci-fi novel binge, and I'd love to participate in a Futuristic Sci-Fi roleplay. Space travel? Awesome! If we can't have epic space travel in real life, we can at least have it in roleplay.

I'm willing to play either a male or female character to balance out the gender ratio. Will there be sentient aliens?

Thanks!

I'm assuming whoever the GM is will be playing as the Employer, is that right? Also, if Vindicated has more experience than I do at being a GM with that sort of role, feel free to choose him over me. You did say you wanted somebody experienced.

Re: Now Hiring

Tips: 0.00 INK Postby Tenno, Warbound Oni on Mon Apr 07, 2014 8:41 pm

Welcome to the party, VindicatedPurpose and Dae Mec! I'm excited to see more people gravitating towards my idea. If this momentum keeps up, we might be see this idea become tangible by the end of the week?

I would appreciate it if you could show me those RPs, Vindicated. Then I could properly assess your skills and name you one of or possibly the only GM.

To answer your question, Dae Mec, yes there will be sentient aliens. Usually I would predefine the specifics of the lore in my roleplays, but this one is different. We will cross bridges when we get to them, so to speak. I of course do have a good sense of what will and will not be allowed or what does and does not exist. However, final say will go to the GM who will setup anything essential to the scenario we are currently in. Players will also have a say in this as well, but only in OOC and not IC. Meaning, when you create your character, you are officially establishing what is and therefore making you the residential expert on the content within your sheet. This input ends as soon as the sheet is submitted and accepted though, which immediately forfeits your say-so on the subject from thereafter.

Now that I think about it, I may make an Encyclopedic OOC Thread where anyone can submit creations to become part of the lore. The thread will consist of things like info and history on certain planets/systems, alien races, technology, etc...

Also, yes Lloyd, you are correct. The Employer will be an extension of the GM, existing as a way for him/her to interact with our characters. Ok though, I did want to keep a GM waiting in the wings just because you never know what might happen... so we can discuss the possibility of you being said person, if you want?

That sounds fine to me Deathscythe, what I mentioned earlier will then apply to you and your character species.

Thanks Tenno.

Anyway, I want to preface that I haven’t GMed in this manner before, but I roleplayed under my fellow staff member, Bosch, in two previous roleplays. Bosch used the same system in both roleplays, and so I have a hang of how that system works. I’m not sure if this was exactly what you were looking for.

So the first was a post-apoc zombie roleplay – Haven the Scavengers, renamed to Live Together Die Alone, about a group of people in northern England trying to survive in a post-apocalyptic story.

The second was a cyberpunk roleplay – Digital Shorts, about a company of bounty hunters called Red Sand Investigations taking place on Mars.

The GM had characters that would assign missions in both roleplays. Players would announce the mission they were going to write in the OOC. Each post was a self-contained short story. To use Bosch’s TV analogy, each post was an episode and the greater story arc was a season. Players had complete control over how things went down, whether they succeeded or failed. They had a week to write the post, but we were flexible if things came up. Then the GM would write a reactionary post detailing the effects/repercussions and the cycle would renew with a new list of jobs.

The style gave opportunities to the writers to develop characters and stretch their fingers.

So from what I understand, things might not work exactly the same, but I feel it’s sort of close.

Also I want to add that I am open to co-GMing if I get to GM. The two roleplays worked very well and would have continued had it not been for time constraints. Bosch was a busy guy and I felt that he was overworked as a lone GM. Two heads are better than one to bounce ideas and come up with new missions and etc.

I also had an idea for an alien character, but he's not so special (or he could be) compared to my other idea for a character. I wanted to create some sort of Robot/Android (Either or) character, and I just wanted to go over a few things, just to agree with you. First of all, are robots/androids existent in your universe and how prevalent are they? I can assume they are human creations, if not rooting from human technology or research and development (Unless humans aren't even a part of this RP). How long have they existed, and what is the general public opinion on them? Are they strictly servants to humans, or do they have a free will and right as a citizen, or something in between? Do they have strict laws they adhere to, or possibly laws that govern their behavior, like those of Asimov? I suppose these things can be answered once I start making a character, which shouldn't be until you put up this RP, but I was just curious, and was hoping to brainstorm ahead of time, like I normally do.

I did have an interesting backstory for humans, should they appear in this RP, which involves robots or other intelligent machines, which I suggested in this topic, but it's only a suggestion.

Nice, I really like the sound of that system; quite envious that it never crossed my mind, actually.

Those roleplays look well constructed, complete with good posts and characters that seemed to help it last a good while, so it obviously worked with you two at the helm. I just want to look over your past works to get a better sense of how you write and develop characters. A brief conversation between us to discuss any ideas you have and thoughts on the roleplay, would further your efforts as well. Additionally, a small excerpt would greatly assist me in gauging your abilities as a GM. Nothing big, just a few paragraphs about a group of NPCs walking through a forest when suddenly something happens. That alone would be enough to tell me everything I need to know.

Just so you know, you wouldn't be alone in your GMing efforts. I will be there to aid you at every turn, brainstorming with you to plan out any and all future endeavors. At the most, there will be three people to do this, but only one person carrying out the task within the IC.

Side Note: I am already working on my own characters. Nothing is set in stone, but I can describe the three archetypes to avoid any duplicates in the roster.

    • The Ronin: A master of stealth and assassination techniques, the Ronin excels in close quarter combat. He is essentially a cyborg from a war-torn planet. Banished and exiled from his clan and homeworld, he wanders the universe doing the only thing he knows best: killing. (Alternatively, he may also be seeking revenge on those who wronged him? Ultimately, his exact history will be vague, he may even elude to different versions of it.)

    • The Extremist: Soldier, mercenary, it doesn't matter what you call him, as long as you know the Extremist deals in death and destruction. He is a galactic terrorist at the beck and call of the highest bidder. The Extremist is wanted by every government in the galaxy, yet none of them have ever been lucky enough to apprehend him. No one knows who, what, or where he is.. but you know what they say, "Knock on the devil's door long enough, and sooner or later someone will answer."

    • The Company Man: The right hand to the Employer, the Company Man is synonymous to the Boss; you simply cannot mention one without the other. Hes a procurer of things not easily procured. But do not confuse him with a lowly thief or weak henchmen, the Company Man is much more than that. In fact, no one is even sure if he is a man at all. Machine, alien, god... none can answer with truth. One thing is certain though, he is not a being to be trifled with.

Sorry for answering you out of turn Lloyd, I wanted my earlier post to be stand alone from this one.

Yes, both humans and robots exist in this universe. Who came first is irrelevant though. History and how the universe came to be won't be relevant to the roleplay, the only thing that matters is the present. As a player, it is up to you while creating your character to determine the answer to all your other questions. Just restrain yourself, and try not to control too much of the lore. You can make your robots their own entity altogether, completely distinct from man-made machines that I am sure humans will use. You may even use the lore from the link, just state that your one character is from a distant galaxy or limit it to a single planet. Also, consider the universe the roleplay takes place in entirely different from ours. That means there isn't an Earth where all humans came from, but they still exist nonetheless.

Yeah, I'm honestly impressed with his system. I have deep respect for the guy. Had there not been time constraints, we'd still be running contently. The only drawback that I've found is that it only works for certain kinds of roleplays, but when it does work, it works very well.

Funny thing. One of my first thoughts for the setting of the roleplay was in a completely different star cluster, probably not even within the Milky Way. So we're good on that point.

I'll fire you a pm in the morning. I'm on US Central Time here. As for the writing excerpt, I'm guessing you want an original piece not lifted from any of my previous work. I think I've had scenes with a group of NPCs and PCs in a forest before.

Also I want to add, Lloyd was interested in GMing as well because it is a unique experience.

Happy to have you among us Selene Durlan, let me know if you have any questions.

I have a lot of news to share with everyone interested in this roleplay. But, I won't be sharing it until Vindicated and myself finish our discussion, which is what brings me here. I need at least one person to assist in a Test Run that will demonstrate how the roleplay will playout once completed. If you want to help, say so here and I will explain what we are doing via PM.
