A fourteen year old Jackson climbed up to the light from a weighty and complicated dream, nothing of it left but the hum of the engine in his ears and the ache of something slipped from his grasp and fallen into a crevasse where it would never be seen again. He sat upright, eyes bleary, stretching until his neck gave a satisfying pop. His mom readjusted herself in her seat, doubtlessly drained from sitting in one aptitude for so long. She sighed and fiddled with the broken radio dial as Jackson turned his gaze outward. The rolling landscape was picturesque, walls of green, needley trees and a stretch of road that seemed without end—terrible but also very beautiful. Maybe there was something to be said for the rawness and emptiness of it all. After a time, he leaned forward, stretching his forearms out on the center console, and folding his torso on top of them like a puppy. Karen gave him a side long glance.

"You look pretty tired, mom."

She hummed in response, but left her lips unparted. This impelled him to continue.

"If you want a break, just a quick one, I could..."

"Absolutely not." She answered, cutting him off with a tone that said the topic was not up for debate, but the sweet allurement of the wheel was simply too strong not to persist.
