Pro-Gay Marriage Rally at U.S. Supreme Court

Tips: 0.00 INK Postby Ylanne on Fri Mar 29, 2013 4:47 am

I was there on Tuesday morning at eight in the morning. I didn't take a lot of pictures though, as I was more preoccupied with my eyes trying to close, my stomach growling, and my fingers freezing in the cold. But here are the ones I have for your enjoyment.

Image description: A female-presenting person of indeterminate race and long dark brown hair holding a green hand-written sign that says "Justice Scalia: You are a law school punchline (except it's not that funny) support marriage equality" with drawings of drama masks. She is wearing a patterned pashmina scarf and a dark fleece or jacket, and is smiling.

The woman holding this sign said that she is currently a law student, which definitely makes the sign more epic than I'd thought it was before.

Image description: Two women who appear to be white, one holding a sign that says "I Do support marriage equality" in red and white and the other holding a handwritten sign that says "Will you marry me?"

The entire crowd began to cheer when the woman with the proposing sign did in fact propose to her partner. Someone else snapped a photograph of the same two women with the proposing woman holding a sign that says "I just proposed and she said yes," or something along those lines. I saw that one on a news site, but this is the picture that I snapped.

Image description: Several people holding various signs that aren't quite legible because bad quality photograph. Some of them say "Fag Court," "Bloody Obama," and "Thank God For Dead Soldiers."

Yes, Westboro Baptist Church was there, not surprisingly. And yes, if you're wondering, I did in fact walk in front of them. But I was intelligent enough not to attempt to talk to them (about anything).

Image description: It's a white posterboard that I hand-decorated in marker, with the message "Queer Disabled Christian & Proud What about me?" in purple, green, blue, black for the ampersand, yellow, orange, and red block letters outlined with black respectively.

And this is the sign I took with me to the rally. This sign says "What about me?" because perspectives like mine are frequently omitted or erased altogether. I don't fit neatly into the rich/upper-class white male-identified (sometimes female-identified) largely cis, able-bodied, neurotypical gay mainstream of the so-called LGBTQ rights movement. I'm Disabled. I'm Autistic. I'm a Person of Color. I'm Asian. I'm neither an L nor a B, but I fall under the Q. My faith is important to me and underlines my political and philosophical beliefs. So where am I in this conversation? Or what about other people like me? Where are the other marginal narratives in the queer rights movement? Where are the asexuals, the demisexuals, the gray-aces? Where are the androgynes, the non-binary folx, the trans* folx, the genderqueers? Where are the crippled bodies and crazy minds? Where are the polyamorous folx? Why are our narratives missing?

And anyway, now that you know that I get around DC quite a bit, there you are...
