The Story So Far... Write a Post » as written by 5 authors
Walking out of her cabin she took a deep breath of the salty sea air that she was raised in. The wind tossed her hair and she knew the weather would be perfect for sailing that day. Leaning on the railing she looked out over the docks, waiting for her crew to show up. As she waited her thoughts drifted to another member of her crew, Willy Lead. She smiled, he was a man after her own heart. Questioning authority at every turn, he would learn that she was not to be trifled with and that they could work beautifully together taking down pirates and British navy alike.
Her thoughts were starting to stray towards the rest of her crew, but they were cut off by the sound of someone coming aboard her ship unannounced. Pulling her sword she called out, " Who goes there?" in the confidant way only a pirate could. " show yourself or I'll add your sword to my collection." she knew it was a vague threat, but it was a threat none the less.
Johnny cracked his back and rolled his shoulders, getting the aches of sleep out of them and readying them for a brand new day. He stood up from his bed and began to suit himself up for the day. He threw on his long johns, his boots, his pants, his shirt, his vest, his harness, his coat, then his blade. Johnny then grabbed his bandanna and tied it around his head. He walked towards the door and slammed it open. making a rather large sound at the inn he was staying. He jogged through the remainder of the in to the front door and burst those doors open as well. He took in a deep breath of salty air and mouth broke into a smile, ever so briefly. Today was a good day to sail.
Johnny trudged his way through the port, having to muscle his way through the early morning crowds. The wind was with them and the tides were leaving, it was a damn near perfect day to set sail and head off to their next venture. It had been a little less than a fortnight since Johnny was on the open water, and all of this land was starting to make him itch. As he neared the east side of the docks, he spotted the towering masts of the "Thearosa" in the distance. He smiled briefly thinking about the ship's Captain. Mad Marie, she had called herself. He wasn't exactly sure how mad she was in the head, but he knew she was mad in other places. She was beautiful, intelligent and cunning. Everything required to a pirate woman. He was surprised at how often he thought about since their last meeting. He relished the thought of being on endless waters with her. This would be a voyage he would not soon forget.
He now stood at the gangplank to the Thearosa, he took in another breath and marched up the plank onto the ship. The sun had not yet risen over the skyline of the port and the chill of night still lingered in the air. As he stepped onto the ship, he heard the sliding of metal and the sound of a threat. Acting on pure instinct, John unsheathed his blade and met his attackers with equal speed. He then suddenly recognized the voice of the attacker. He slowly stepped out of the shadow of the sail and came into full view. He flashed a small smile. "Sorry about that, Captain, I didn't mean to startle you. I'll make sure to announce myself, next time." he said respectfully. He sheathed his cutlass and looked back to her. He then looked to the rest of the ship. He was apparently the first to arrive. "I seem to be the first. Anything I could do for you, before I get to my duties, Captain?"
Jay had gotten a bit of distance between herself and the man when from behind her, she heard, "Hey, tha' li'l sneak. Come back 'ere with my rings!" As he said the last sentence, Jay grinned to herself and looked behind her. She wasn't surprised to see the angry man stumbling his way through the crowd toward her. "Too easy," she muttered to herself as she began to dart her way through the crowd. She had made is almost to the docks when she stopped to look behind her. There was no man behind her and Jay thought that he must have given up. "Too easy," she mumbled again with a smirk.
Jay sauntered the rest of the way to the ship, admiring her new possessions. She made her way onto the ship and came upon the Captain and John Fletcher. Ignoring this, Jay reached her hand out in between them. "What do ya think?" she asked, but didn't give them time to respond as she continued, "I think they're a bit too big for me." Jay paused thoughtfully and then continued again, "Maybe I'll just sell 'em." She took the rings off her fingers and placed them in her pocket. She finally looked up at the Captain who still had her sword drawn and smirked. "Ya can put that away now, Cap. Ya don't wanna hurt yourself."
Marie smiled at the man who replied to her threat "Sorry about that, Captain, I didn't mean to startle you. I'll make sure to announce myself, next time." he said respectfully. He sheathed his cutlass and looked back to her. He then looked to the rest of the ship. "I seem to be the first. Anything I could do for you, before I get to my duties, Captain?" The Captian shook her head, " nothing comes to mind Mister Fletcher, feel free to have a look around." she smiled " just be back up on deck when the rest of the crew arives. I plan on addressing them and I'd like my first mate to be at my side when I did."
Marie was about to continue when a hand was thrust between them and a woman said. "What do ya think?" she asked, but quickly continued "I think they're a bit too big for me." The crew memeber paused thoughtfully and then continued again, "Maybe I'll just sell 'em." She took the rings off her fingers and placed them in her pocket. She looked up at Marie who still had her sword drawn and smirked. "Ya can put that away now, Cap. Ya don't wanna hurt yourself."
Smiling Marie sheathed her sword " I supose you're right Jay, but don't you have to be at your post? It's bad luck to have to punish a crew memeber on the first day on a voyage." her eyes harden she shows how serious she was. " but if need be I can deal with a little bad luck."
William walked up the plank to the ship. He groggily rubbed his eyes, drank the rest of his rum, tossed the bottle overboard into the water, and stood in a rough military manner. Looking around he saw a seagul that was perching itself on a rail across the ship. It was shitting all over the place. Angerly he pulled out his pistol and shot the bird dead.
He looked at the female captain and gave her a formal military salute. "Sorry bout that captain. Bird was all over the place an I didn wana clean it all up. So who do we all got all up here?" He asked dropping his salute to reload his pistol. Never knew if their was some guard stationing that could only be bribed with lead.
She grabbed her satchel, and started towards the ship, she had been told to arrive early. She crossed rather easily, although she passed some people who tried to sell her some things, which annoyed her. She crossed the plank and saw the Captain, along with several others, "Other crew members" She thought, telling herself to not ignore them completely, she didn't like working with people a lot, unless she knew them, so this would be an adventure.
"Captain Maire," She said, her thick accent slurring some of the words, "I is here, when we be setting off? Staying at tis port any longer will be making me insane." She said it all, and gave a small head nod to the others, and even that small gesture was big for her.
At the all to familiar sound of a gunshot Marie's head whipped around to see that William had shot down a seagul."Sorry bout that captain." He said with a military salute, Marie just smiled it was good to know she wasn't the only one who hated the bloody birds. "Bird was all over the place an I didn wana clean it all up. So who do we all got all up here?" He asked dropping the salute and seeing to his pistol.
At this Marie laughed a little and pointed at eac member of the crew.. " This is Jonathan Flintlock Fletcher, my first mate. There isn't a better first mate in all the seven seas." she smiled knowing lady luck had smiled on her when she went to look for a crew. " and this is Jaylene McNeery, the best thief that you'll ever come across." she glanced around the deck hoping Tia had decided to come.
When she heard "Captain Maire," come from the thick Jamaican accent her smile grew tenfold, "I is here, when we be setting off? Staying at tis port any longer will be making me insane." Marie turned to the healer. " and William this is our doctor Tia, her family and mine go back many generations and I wouldn't trust any other doctor." the rest of the crew she procured to work the ship were starting to slowly trickle in. " We should be leaving quite soon Tia, I just need to make sure we have everyone on board."
He turned to the captain. "So Maire, where can I set up shop? Got an itchin to organize the powder an the guns." He told the captain.
Marie looked over her crew, they all seemed to know what they were doing. It reminded her of the ship she grew up on, a very controlled form of chaos. Her gaze stopped on William when he said "So Maire, where can I set up shop? Got an itchin to organize the powder an the guns."
After thinking about it for a few moments she shrugged, " it's a new boat, almost all the rooms are water tight take your pick of a place below deck." she looked at the crew, " that goes for all of you, you're the officers on this ship, where my word is gospel yours is law."
"It is nice to see ya once more, deary. Tank you for letting me on, you got bigga sence de last time we had met. 'Ere is a small tanks." She thenpulled out a small vial with a milky liquid in it, "Very strong poison, dey will not have time to bleed out." She then walked away without saying goodbye.
She made her way below deck and picked out a room that had no windows, or a small one at that. She finally found one and entered, she then opened her bag and pulled out several small containers, each with a label on it like, 'beladonna' or 'mandrake' and put them on a small table, and then she unpacked the rest of her equipment and placed the empty bag on the floor and then took her small blade and began to skin the bird. Once she was done, she got an empty vial and let the blood go into that, to use for a later time, before sealing it. She then took the rest of the bird and threw it out of her window, her hands still covered in blood, although she was use to the sight by now.
Jay turned her head as she heard the heavy Jamaican accent. Maire introduced her as Tia, their doctor, and Jay nodded toward the woman in a greeting, figuring by her body language that she wasn't a big people-person. Jay could respect that. Considering that a lot of her "work" involved getting to know people and conning them out of their money, Jay could see why someone would just generally not like people.
Hearing that they would pick their rooms, Jay smiled and nodded toward each of the crew members. "It was a pleasure meetin' ya'll," she said and began to walk gracefully down below deck. She could live with simply the crow's nest, but a room was great for after-hours. She walked around before finally picking out an open room with windows covering an entire wall. Jay smiled to herself, setting her few possessions down and then heading back up to the deck. They would be setting off soon, so Jay made her way over to the mast. Once they set off, Jay would make her way up to the crow's nest, but for now she would stay down on deck and take in the new crew members.
It was sunny as always, he had wish he had brought a hat. He walked over to the captain to ask her a question. "So I'm good an redy to work now. What do ya want me to do?"
Marie walked over to the balcony, trying to find the words for her speech, but her plans were interupted by Tia, "It is nice to see ya once more, deary. Tank you for letting me on, you got bigga sence de last time we had met. 'Ere is a small tanks." Then she pulled out a small vial with a milky liquid in it, "Very strong poison, dey will not have time to bleed out." She then walked away in the sudden manner her family seemed to have.
Looking down at the poison in her hand, Marie knew that it would work just as she said. " well then, this needs to be kept safe." she said slipping the vial in to the bosom of her top, knowing it was one of the safest places on the ship. A few minutes later Marie had her entire speech planned out, and was about to start in on it when William appeared,"So I'm good an redy to work now. What do ya want me to do?" Marie thought about it for a moment, " we'll be hitting a port before we leave the islands. I'd like it if you took inventory of the weapons both big and small, and let me know what we need."
His search continued with looking deeper into the ship. Eventually he came to the supply storage room. It was a mees to say the least. From the looks of it there were two flintlock muskets, four flintlock pistols in horrible shape, a rusty cutlass, and a half empty barrel of gunpowder. The food was the type that could spoil on the sea, he even saw a wheel of cheese in there.
William came back up deck an hour later to report to the captain. Walking up to her he wondered how she would take the news. Might even break the bank. "Well Marie, it's not good. We need more cannon balls an gunpowder to go with that. We should buy more pistols that are in decent shape as well as some more swords. The food needs to be restocked too. I'd say potatoes, onions, apples, dried meat, dried fish, an lots of water will do. Rum if you want the crew to have a higher moral if you know what I mean." He chuckled at that but then got serious about it again. "It won't be cheap but if you'd like I can pitch in too. Though that's dependin on whether or not we'll be stoppin at Havanna or we'll still be in Haiti. Either way it's bussiness." He finished his report with that proposal. Of course he would have to recompensate him for the investment.
Glancing over her shoulder Marie says to her first mate. " You're awfully quiet Mister Flintlock, is there somthing I need to know before I give the orders to leave port?"
As she waited for his reply William came over to her to give his report. "Well Marie, it's not good. We need more cannon balls an gunpowder to go with that. We should buy more pistols that are in decent shape as well as some more swords. The food needs to be restocked too. I'd say potatoes, onions, apples, dried meat, dried fish, an lots of water will do. Rum if you want the crew to have a higher moral if you know what I mean." Marie bristled at being called her first name by a member of her crew, but she decided not to interupt her weapons master. "It won't be cheap but if you'd like I can pitch in too. Though that's dependin on whether or not we'll be stoppin at Havanna or we'll still be in Haiti. Either way it's bussiness"
Nodding thoughtfully at his words, Marie thinks carfully before she speaks. " That won't be nessiary, I will be avble to take care of it. Make a list of the things that I need to procure and I will make it happen." she turns away from him to look over the crew. " And it's proper to adress the head of the ship as Captian, Mister Cullings. Don't forget it." taking a deep breath she prayed she made the right call on how she handled that, she didn't need an unruly crew before they even left port.
William decided to pipe up still standing by the open door. "So your a doctor right? Isn't that a rare proffesion way out here?" He asked trying to start small talk.
When she looked up, she saw it was the one called William, "Great." She moaned to herself as she looked at him. That is when he fully entered her room and said, "So your a doctor right? Isn't that a rare proffesion way out here." He was smiling a bit, trying to make small talk probably.
She closed her book and stood up, she was a little shorter than him, but still within the same hieght range. "Well, boy. I am de fifteenth generation of women in me family to be a healer, so I don't know a rare profession. It has been me life, and Captain Maire and 'er mother had known me family for a long time. What about yerself, what brings you on dis humble trip?" She said, still looking at him, but let a smile smile creep on her face.
William thought back to healing. "I hope your better than the last doctor on my previous crew. Didn't even know how to did out a bullet. Everyone died on the table when surgery was a must." He said rolling his eyes. "You do know how to take out a bullet without removing the limb right?" He had to ask. William would much rather die than lose a limb.
"Don't you be worrying, deary. I am the best there is, you will not lose your arm, and I will 'ave you fighting witin de day." She said, then leaned in, "Oh, yea. Don't you be worrying about me, dem stories you heard about witch doctors is wrong, I heal de body, and destroy it also." She laughed a little, if only to scare him a bit.
He walked up to the deck to try to find the captain. Eventually he found and walked up to her. "I have that list that you wanted." William said handing the parchment to the captain. "So Captain Marie, what's the plan after we leave port? Sailin through enemy waters? I've got an order from some pals so I've gotta pick em' up. When we reach another port can you tell me?" He asked her.
