Introduction

After the incidents that occurred within Academy City there was little the churches could do to hide magic from the world. Although this was seen a a good light and path for the future. Leaders within the various churches and the leaders of Academy City came together to try make sure something like this didn't happen again. The result was schools within Academy City introducing more students and teachers. These new additions were those from the various churches. The lesser prominent reason for this decision is to help promote peace between all involved parties and allow for both sides to learn of the other.

After a few decades have passed much has been learned between both sides. Even though many have accepted each other there are still some that don't believe how things work on the opposite side. Still, there is little friction between people of opposing views. It has been learned that an Esper cannot learn magic; and likewise a Magician cannot gain esper-like abilities. The reason for this is because the result would be catastrophic.

The only downfall to the change seems to be that groups that opposed Espers have gotten bigger and now also oppose Magicians. However, the change has not really done much as far as crime goes; only they are being a little more vocal about their opinions.

Although most do not know of it there are some who want more power than is thought possible. And some wish to remove this power altogether.

With so many different sides and views how long will the peace last in Academy City?

"Got it," Jackson said as he created portals to use as steps leading towards District One. Thanks to the light breeze and how smooth Jackson was as he 'walked' it made it seem like they were skating across the sky. The view from this height was different than from the tower since it was night. This time the city lights lit the ground playfully. At this height you could see pretty much the entire city. "Like the view from here?" Jackson asked as he used his portals to keep them safe.

" It's not too shabby." Kanno managed to get out as she gripped tightly onto Jackson. Without her gear, she felt not only extremely exposed to both the elements and anyone who might be gunning for her, but also the height itself. Up this high, she could even see some of the blimps and helicopters below them, and in the distance, an ascending jet. However, a 360 degrees view like this was beautiful and rare. She spent most of her time in air transit asleep or recovering from wounds and missions.

" Haven't you ever felt that someone could take you out up here? It's a great view granted, but it's also a great view of you to just about anyone. "

"AT night I feel fine. Since my portals are black I can easily hide if I need to be cautious. And besides, not many people could see us here. Those that could expect everyone to be below them. We are safer up here than anywhere, plus it gives us the element of surprise if we need it." Jackson feels something harder than normal when Kanno grips tight and takes a moment to think about it before continuing. "Hey Kanno, are you wearing armor or something? There is something hard connected to you. I can feel it even through our clothes." Clearly Jackson didn't really mind, his tone of voice was purely curious. And it wasn't like he was unfamiliar with cybernetics either. After all it was well known his mom had a cybernetic hand thanks to an accident when she was working sometime in the past.

" Hmm...I see. Oh, my hand? I believe I had mentioned it to you before, I owe my life to my father. I was born with a crippled body, and it was through a..uhm...group that he funded and oversaw that gave me a chance at a more..normal life. If I had been born anywhere but in Academy City I would dead more likely than not. After all, who wants a useless, crippled kid? Even so many decades after Academy City was first made by the Chairman, it still likes to hold onto all the technology that comes out of here. Of course, that doesn't make it alright for people to commit acts of terror and violence because one disagrees with the policies of cities. Some of the first generation espers are dead because of it. The existence of magic now also only makes humans so very afraid...."

Then suddenly, her mouth seemed to open itself and she asked, " Jackson, what would you think of a person who killed to keep the peace?" Realizing her mistake, Kanno smiled and rested her head on Jackson's shoulder. " Ahaha, sorry for these weird thoughts and questions of mine. I'm just tired."

"Naw, it's quite alright. And honestly I would have to say I wouldn't mind. I just don't kill them because I don't see it as my place to decide their fate. Besides I have too much fun toying with them." Jackson chuckles at this, trying to lighten the mood some. As they neared District One Jackson quickly spotted Kanno's home and started over that way. "Is your arm cybernetic? If so once your arm is better would you mind if I tried something?" Jackson was clearly hinting at trying to make things easier for her if her cybernetics were damaged in the future.

" Eh? I suppose that there wouldn't be a problem as long as you don't try to figure out all of its secrets. Then I'd have to kill you. " Kanno said half jokingly. As they neared her house, or rather mansion, several servants filed out and formed a line on each side, bowing.

" Welcome home, Mistress Kanno." They said in unison. Even after all these ears, it still unsettled Kanno that they could always pull things off like this in perfect unison, never missing a beat. She slowly lowered herself off of Jackson and dropped onto the ground. " Thanks for walking me home. A very interesting first for me. I suppose I shall see you and your parents tomorrow." Giving a short bow of her own to Jackson, she walked through the massive doors to her mansion flanked by the servants After the doors closed, a few of the servants broke their professional behavior and started grinning at a now very flustered Kanno.

"S-Shut up! It's nothing." She stormed up the ornate flight of stairs and went into her room. Kanno found a rather fancy dress waiting for her in the corner, evidently for tomorrows party if the note was anything to go by. Falling onto her bed, she cursed herself, and then began cursing Jackson. He had to be a magician for her to act so differently around him, and even drop too many hints that could unravel her entire life. There was no way he could make her facade be so...real. Or could he?

Trying to get her mind off the void esper, Kanno pressed her palm against a large cabinet, and it opened up revealing an armory. She perused the various firearms and weaponry before pulling out one of her helmets. She stared into its black visor and realized that some tiny part of her inside had fallen for the foreigner. At this point, the logical part of her brain had surmised that it would lower her performance and that he would need to be disposed of. Then Kanno suddenly punched a hole through the wall with her arm. No. It had been so long since she didn't need to give in to the emotionless killer inside her. She would keep control. Falling back onto her, she fell asleep wondering just how much longer she'd be allowed to keep up this "normal" life.

Jackson waved bye as Kanno went inside; he then lingered for a moment before opening a portal home. He walked through and into his room, "Well time to get some sleep. Things seem like they are going to be getting interesting from here on out." Jackson quickly fell asleep on his bed, making sure to get the rest he needed for the day ahead.

An hour before the party was to start Jackson and his parents left the house and made their way to the party's location. It didn't surprise Jackson to see the extravagant location that was also secluded from the rest of the city. It was clearly something that was intended especially for parties like this. "Here we are," Jackson's mom said as they parked the car. They were twenty minutes early, but were not the first to arrive.

"I wonder where Kanno is? I am sure she would already be here considering her father's position." Whether or not this was true was only a guess, but based on what Jackson had witnessed in the past it wouldn't surprise him at all. Jackson walked with his parents until they were passed the check point for invitations. From there he went off to the stairway; at the base was a table that had no one else at it. Jackson took a seat and created a portal a few feet from the ceiling pointing to him. He figured if Kanno remembered what he said last night about being high up she would see it and be able to find him if he didn't see her first.

When Kanno woke up, she was greeted by the sight of a maid standing at her bed. Sighing, she got up and let the maid help her get dressed. So , her father did still insist on living the life of the rich man he was. A doctor walked in with two technicians wheeling in some equipment and her replacement arm. After a hour of painful attachment and adjustments the doctor was satisfied and wordless left the room. The maid dutifully cleaned up the mess that the reattachment had made ,and wiped blood off of Kanno's arm. "Are you alright Mistress?"

" Hm? Oh, yes. Thank you. " Kanno absently responded. This round of cybernetics had hurt a lot more, but the arm also felt lighter, yet stronger. After acclimating to the new arm, Kanno got up and walked downstairs. Unsurprisingly, beside the servants, she was the only one in the mansion. Waiting on the dining table was a nondescript large envelope. Opening it up, Kanno was disappointed by its contents. It would seem her break was over. Kanno left a maid to burn the envelope as she geared up to take out the trash of Academy City.

Her task lasted her most of the day, with only a few hours before the party was due to start. This time it had taken her much longer, a clear indicator to her that she was losing focus, or had grown complacent. She didn't know why either, but her reaction time was longer, her movements more sluggish. The new cybernetic arm did compensate for part of it, but not enough. After wiping blood of her armor, Kanno dissolved her blade made of light. Now there were no traces as to what had killed them beyond an unidentifiable blade. After walking alone for a while, a car pulled up and she got in. After pulling off bloodied pieces of equipment, Kanno decided to relax for a bit until she realized the dress was in front of her. She gave a sigh of exasperation; her father wanted her to attend to the social function early, right after finishing a job. It took a while to dawn on her that she had gotten into a limo instead of a normal car, and that there were yet more maids sitting with her to help her get ready. Her reactions and perception really were becoming dull. Surrendering to her attendants, Kanno inwardly groaned as they started cleaning her up and applying makeup.

By the time the limo pulled into the large estate set aside for such occasions, Kanno felt like a very different person. Her hair had been tied back, and the blue highlights had been brought forward to accentuate them. She had also been scrubbed clean as best as one could be on a limo ride, and a liberal application of makeup had been applied. The dress was also very different from what she normally worse, and it felt very uncomfortable. Her attendants had insisted she looked gorgeous, but Kanno just grumbled. Dresses like these were constrictive, and would definitely hinder any combat movements. Thankfully, she had been allowed to strap a small handgun to her thigh in case of emergencies, so it wasn't a total loss. That combined with her own esper abilities should suffice to overcome any trouble that could come from such an event. Kanno pulled on the elbow length gloves that went with the dress and was pleasantly surprised that it would hide her new cybernetics, for she hadn't had time to allow for clone-flesh to be applied over it. She met her father as she walked and he smiled at her, introducing Kanno to some big-shot researchers. They walked away together and he asked her, " So how's the new arm."

Kanno responded by crushing a valuable sculpture to the chagrin of her father. " Now now, I know you don't want to be here, especially so soon after work, but think of it this way : at least your boyfriend will be here."
Her face turned red and she stammered, " H-e's..w--we're not like that ok. You and the servants."
" Mmm yes, young love. Good to see your birthday wish is working out for you. Now, while I do hope you will be able to enjoy this party with that friend of yours, something may happen tonight. One of the new hybrid cults has been very active lately so make sure you're prepared. After you're done, come back to me so I can show you off to others." With that, he walked off.

Rolling her eyes, Kanno walked off to check the hidden stashes of weapon and the panic rooms dotted throughout the estate. Sometimes she felt like the only reason she had been rescued and adopted was so the Director could pay less people for security. Satsified with the security, Kanno walked back towards the the general party goers that were starting to stream in when she noticed something very strange on top. At first she thought it was a threat and she was about to activate her powers, but then she remembered the conversation last night with Jackson. Something about not looking up. It took her a while of negotiating her way through the growing crowd of guests, some of whom insisted on talking to her and getting pictures with her, but she finally made it to where she assumed Jackson was. He was sitting around, looking a little out of place with the multitude of guests standing around and chatting, or bragging. She walked up to him and curtsied, " Hello good sir. You do seem in dire need of help this fine night.

Jackson smiled when he heard Kanno's voice. When he looked over to her his mouth dropped. " You look absolutely stunning," Jackson definitely looked stunned from How Kanno looked. Jackson stood up and held out his hand. As he did so a slow song started to play. It was almost as if someone was watching what was happening and catering to Jackson and Kanno. This change in song pace didn't seem to phase Jackson at all. It was almost as if he had practiced all week for this one event.

" Why thank you. You don't look half bad yourself." Kanno smirked at Jackson. His innocence was a nice change of pace. It was nice to see someone being genuine on their own free will with her; scratch that, it was nice to see someone being genuinely nice to her. She took his hand and allowed him to guide her in the dance. Jackson seemed to know what he was doing, so she decided to follow his lead.

Even though he never really did this much Jackson did pretty good at leading the two of them. The soft music definitely fit well with the choice of dance Jackson used. After a moment of dancing Jackson pulled Kanno closer, causing their bodies to be only a couple inches apart. "Hey Kanno, do you mind if I ask you something?" Jackson whispered his words to Kanno, just loud enough so that only she would be able to hear him. Not that many others outside of Kanno would be able to understand him anyway.

Although Kanno didn't really know how to dance, she was still impressed by Jackson. He seemed to be doing pretty well for himself, and none of the other guests were raising any eyebrows; in fact some seemed to be looking on in approval. It was a little strange to Kanno to be such a focus of attention in this sort of formal event. Then Jackson pulled her close to him and her face flushed red for the umpteenth time that day.

"Hmm? Yes, I suppose that would not be an inconvenience."

Jackson smiled at Kanno's way of replying. "Would you like to be my girl-" Jackson was cut off by the sounds of an explosion from outside. It was loud, but sounded like it came from the edge of the property. It was quickly followed by three other explosions coming from all sides. These explosions were evenly spaced around the property. Just after the explosions fireballs hit outside the building causing the ground to set ablaze. However the fire made a circle around the property. Based on the moments of the fire it was clearly not an Esper attack; it had to be mages.

Without hesitation Jackson put his portals on all the ceiling, floor, walls and doors to act like additional protection from both heat and from the enemy. Jackson looked around to make sure everyone was okay. Thankfully no one was harmed, just a little startled. "Kanno, this place is owned by your family right? Saferooms, where are they? I can open portals to get people there faster." Jackson wasn't sure how much they would protect against the fighting that was sure to come about, but something was better than nothing.

Explosions interrupted Jackson's question and Kanno was annoyed at first. There must have been an accident, and now she might have to go take care of it. However, after there were repeated explosions and fire moving very strangely, she realized that the security had been breached. For a moment, she considered following Jackson's suggestion and merely getting people to safety. Perhaps the situation would resolve itself and she could continue on with a normal life as long as possible. However, something in her mind was pushing her to move. After a brief moment of deliberation Kanno decided that as much as she liked Jackson, her duty to Academy City came first.

" Yes, we do. However, I don't know how it'll hold up against magic. You're better off getting people out of this estate. Feel free to bring them to the panic rooms if you want. The less people getting in the way, the better. " Kanno grabbed a tablet showing the layout of the estate out of the wall and threw it to Jackson. " Everything should be on there, but don't let anyone see that." Suddenly, there was a crack of displacement and a masked figure teleported in front of her. His slow reaction time and seemingly imprecise teleportation led her to believe it was a level 3 teleporter. Reaching under her dress, Kanno was disappointed by both the obstacle it posed and the hindrance to mobility her formal wear caused. She quickly pulled the trigger and was rewarded with a splash of blood on her face. Not only an average esper, but an inexperienced one at that too. By now alarms were blaring and a general pandemonium was consuming the room. Kanno fired off a few shots at what seemed to be magicians and navigated through the growing flames in order to find one of the armories built in the estate. It was quieter in that part of the estate, giving Kanno ample time to scan into the armory. A false wall slid open and she entered inside, surveying one of her spare body armors and various firearms.

If there was one good thing to be said about this surprise act of terror, it was that Kanno could get out of the dress and high heels now. After changing and suiting up, Kanno took a rifle and the liquid Ability Body Crystal that she had been the first test subject of. If things were far too hot, then she might need to increase her calculation ability for the fight. As Kanno neared the fighting, she realized that she was slipping back into her former self. It saddened her that Jackson would need to see her like this.

No. Slipping back into her normal self. How could she be so naive to believe that for even a moment, she could ever lead a normal life? Sealing the helmet around the head, Kanno ran back into the fighting.

Taking Kanno's words to heart Jackson got everyone far away from the building. All the way to the school to be exact. Jackson gave a farewell to his parents before heading back to the mansion. When he got there Jackson made sure he was covered in his Void Armor for protection. "I don't think I can afford to go easy here," he said as he created blade portals that were made to cut. "It's a shame too, I really do hate killing."

As Jackson spoke Kanno came into view. "Somehow I doubt it but is that you Kanno?" Jackson half didn't want to believe it, but was glad he wouldn't have to do this with someone he might not trust. As he waited for Kanno's response a mage sent a ball of fire at Jackson. Even though the fire hit him it was seemingly absorbed by the Void Armor. Jackson turned around and put his hand towards the mage, palm facing out. As Jackson did this a portal opened up right in front of the mage. From this portal came the same flames that hit Jackson moments ago. The flames engulfed the mage and quickly burnt him to death.

Shortly after Kanno returned to the fight, she was suprised to encounter Jackson still there fighting with mages, killing mages. She was quietly impressed by Jackson's ability to kill; most self professed heroes would balk at the thought of taking another human's life. At the same time, he wasn't supposed to be here. To her chagrin, there were still a few stragglers cowering or trying to flee the conflict. Another magician chanted something that sounded Scandinavian and sent a shard of ice flying at her. Kanno kicked one of the stragglers into the ice and jumped over the now dead body, and unloaded several rounds at the magician. A few of the security teams were starting to push the combined magician-esper attackers back. However, there were still several higher leveled espers and magicians putting up a bloody fight. Her helmet began outlining the elements currently in the air and displaying their concentrations. The flames had increased the amount of photons flying around, and Kanno decided to unleash her signature technique and hardened the light into an electric blue shield that either absorbed or deflected the attacks being unleashed upon her.

Glancing back at Jackson, she finally answered his question. " Yes, and no I suppose."

"That's good enough for me," Jackson said with a smile even though you couldn't see it due to his armor. One mage clearly of a higher caliber hit Jackson with a club and knocked him to the ground. Even though it didn't hurt it was a powerful blast. "You really think that is going to help you?" Jackson then created what looked to be copies of himself. Although if someone knew enough about his power they could probably figure out it was just copies of his armor. This was his most powerful move as he basically attacked the enemy with multiple copies of himself. Each set of armor was just as dangerous as the original.

All the copies went after the mage at the same time. With all ten coming at once it made it too difficult to get away. It didn't take long before this mage was cut into a few pieces. Although there was no blood left behind. In fact the cut pieces looked like they were supposed to be that way rather than being made that way. Compared to the vigilante from the news and what Jackson had shown before this Jackson was very different. However it couldn't be anyone else since Jackson was the only Void Esper that was level 3 or higher; and Jackson was now showing signs of being a level 5 Esper. Either he was just a level 4 and using his power in a unique way or he was actually a level 5. On paper and school records it showed level 4, but it wouldn't be hard for h to bluff his level.

Between Kanno and Jackson, it didn't take too long for most of the terrorists to be disposed of. It would seem that whoever they were, they had not been expecting so much resistance. A magician lying wounded on the floor attempted to cast a spell and take Kanno with him, but she casually performed the calculations required to convert the oxygen around him into a more solid form. Cut off from the oxygen, the incantation failed to leave the magician's mouth. Then, his lungs failed to keep his body going due to the lack of breathable oxygen. Most of the remaining espers were either those working for her father or dead and dying. With the worst of the fighting over, Kanno regarded Jackson with reservation; he seemed to have far more combat experience then his background had led her to believe, and his esper abilties were of fairly high levels. Given the lack of Void Espers of merit in general, it would be difficult to compare his abilities to current Level 5's without the aid of the Tree Diagram II.

Her father's voice on the helmets speakers interrupted her train of thought. " Good work. We have captured or killed most of the intruders. A VTOL is heading towards you. Get on it and leave. "
" Understood. Should I make sure there are no loose ends here?" Kanno asked, referring to Jackson. There were a few brief moments of silence before he responded.
" No. Take him with you. He will be important." With that, the connection was cut.

Kanno beckoned with her hand to Jackson. " It would appear you will need to come with me."

"As long as I am with you I don't mind." Jackson said as he removed he armor and gave a smile to Kanno. Even though he saw a different side than normal he still showed a kind face towards her. It was as if nothing had happened, his feelings for her completely unchanged. What his thoughts on Kanno were well hidden other than he liked her. The fact that he let his full power be known to her was fairly good evidence of this.

Something inside her stirred, but Kanno ignored it and walked towards the landing zone of the gunship her father had sent. The day had turned out far differently than she had expected, and she wasn't' sure if that had been a good thing or a bad thing. On one hand her experience at a party had been ruined, but on the other, she was back to doing what she did best. Kanno stepped onto the gunship and waited for Jackson to get on. Once he did, they could leave the burning estate for who knows where.

Jackson stepped onto the gunship behind Kanno, the door closing behind and taking off soon after. "So, any idea where we are headed?" Jackson asked curious as to what was going to happen next. He went over to the window and looked out. This was his first time being up in the air without the use of his portals. It was different. Whether it was a good or bad different Jackson did not know for himself quite yet. It was definitely a change of pace either way though. Jackson didn't seemed shocked or phased at all by the events that had taken place just moments ago. And he wasn't for the most part; after all he had seen a lot of things in this city, finding out about Kanno's secret was just another of those things to him at the moment.

" Likely the Office. A terrorist attack on this scale is enough to warrant the Board of Directors to take some form of action. I'm sure someone has already sent a report to the Windowless Building by now. " Kanno answered Jackson's question without looking at him. She hadn't expected for him to find out about her other life, nor be so experienced in combat.

" W-I am surprised you know quite a bit about combat. You know one of my secrets, what is yours? Most normal students definitely do not know how to fight so effectively, especially against magecraft."

"I have a bit of an unfair advantage. Between fighting the gang members and my void power I am basically a human weapon." Jackson sighed slightly not liking the idea of being a human weapon. "If I wanted to I could easily do well in the military or in an Esper based law enforcement. But I would rather use my powers to help others in different ways. I also want to find someone to one day settle down with. If I could I would like to have a fairly quiet life when I do settle down." Jackson looked at Kannon with a slight blushed as he spoke of settling down.

" Hmm, you are so unlike the Demon of Academy City, the Accelerator. I'm sure if he had had your power back then, he would've done his best to end this world. " Kanno said while looking out the window. The last part of his response had failed to elicit any real response this time, but for some strange reason deep down, Kanno felt something. She didn't know what it was, but she was determined to ignore it. The rest of the flight passed in silence until they finally set down on the Building. Several armed men appeared and escorted them to two imposing double doors that led into the main conference room. More likely than not, the entire Board had been assembled for a response to the crisis, and Kanno would be given several more targets to dispose of. However, she wasn't sure as to why Jackson had been summoned so she decided to step aside and let him enter first.

" After you."

Most recent OOC posts in Academy City

Re: Academy City

Same here. Reception is bad so it takes a bit. Plus the screen size messes me up. Once I go to MOS school I'll have my computer mailed to me though. I'll be able to reply with my normal posts again at that time.

Re: Academy City

No problem. I'm more surprised you posted at all given you'd be gone for four weeks at training agian.

Re: Academy City
