Description

Name: Kanno Hsu

Age : 16

Gender : Female

Appearance : Kanno stands at 5'5" and has a mostly athletic build. If one looked at her, they would think she had to be a start athlete of the swim team or another sports team, but for her noticeably less toned upper body that has been spoiled by her laziness in using her ability to lessen physical intensive activities. She has shoulder length hair with light blue highlights that she leaves straight, but will sometimes tie it into a ponytail for practical reasons. Her left eye has changed to a more reddish color from long term usage of certain drug. Kanno often wears bandages to school and passes it off as clumsiness. If one looked closely, one could see where her joints are actually artificial.

Personality : Kanno attempts to act as "normal" as possible in the public, but lacks knowledge for such casual social protocol and often becomes flustered. She attempts to be friendly to those around her, and be as supportive as possible. Some of her classmates think she has a parent-complex given how much she talks about them sometimes. However when doing a job, Kanno becomes far more ruthless and pragmatic; she deals with problems as fast as possible. This is sometimes visible when a more "important" task comes up in school. She also holds some disdain for magic users, a trait passed down to her by her benefactors on the Board of Directors. She also gets very defensive of both Academy City and the Board when they are criticized. Recently she has realized how lonely she is in the world but pushes it aside through her work.

Ability : Hardlight

Kanno is a level 4 esper with the ability to manipulate the mass of theoretically anything. Her trade mark ability is manipulating the photons of light particles and making it "hard". Aside from the mass of light, Kanno can also manipulate most every day objects competently, as well as some gases in the air. She is limited by distance in maintaining the altered mass of objects. The smaller the object, the longer and further away she can maintain it. For instance, a bullet crafted from light will last longer than a spear of light thrown at someone. Kanno has yet to be able to perform the calculations necessary to alter the mass of organics due to a near death attempt several years ago, and also lacking the appropriate knowledge. She is also limited by the need to see what she is altering, causing her abilities to become weaker in low light settings.

In order to compensate she has a special mask that aids in identifying the composition of her environment, and make suggestions in calculations. It allows her to operate in most environments. Kanno also uses enhancement drugs when necessary, but is a life long user of a more refined form of Body Crystal. This enhancement, while not as dangerous as it was under Kihara's research, boosts her calculation abilities at the cost of very slowly starting to erode her body without her knowledge.

History : A crippled child, Kanno was abandoned in Academy City at a young age. Without access to many options that most Child Errors had, Kanno managed to join a Skill Out gang that used her as bait or a distraction and managed to survive several years off of that. However, she was abandoned by the group when an operation went wrong and was arrested by Anti-Skill and sent to the Reformatory where she languished. One day, a researcher visited her with the offer of shorter sentence, and even possible freedom of she participated in an experiment. With nothing to lose, Kanno agreed and was removed one night and taken to a research facility away from the general public. Although she was promised it would be a non-life threatening experiment, Kanno realized it was a lie after several other "volunteers" failed to return. By the time Kanno realized her mistake, it was too late and she quietly allowed herself to be strapped down and became another subject in the quest for an improved, mass produced Body Crystal. In a twist of fate, the most crippled subject survived and was lauded as the key to a new age of ability improvement. As a reward, Kanno was given not only her freedom, but also a semi-new lease on life. With a partially cybernetic body that could function normally, Kanno became a more willing participant in the future tests and experiments. When she had a System Scan conducted, it was discovered that her esper ability seemed to have been permanently improved by the new body crystal, causing a member of the Board of Directors to become personally interested. Eventually the Director decided to adopt Kanno as a daughter and gave her a chance at a "normal" life. Using a Testament to aid Kanno in catching up on education, the Director also began shaping Kanno into a willing agent of the Board of Directors.

Taking the Director's name as her own, Kanno eventually became a loyal "cleaner" for the Board of Directors, taking care of the odd errand, but also tying up loose ends in other factions. With the rise of magic in society, her job became even busier as she was deployed to take of business and new conflicts between the Science and Magic factions. For her 15th birthday, Kanno summoned the courage to ask her adoptive parent to enroll in public school. She was given permission under the stipulation that she didn't allow it to interfere with her daily work. After considering the new academic institutions, Kanno enrolled in Newline as her first choice and was known as " that really nice, quirky girl who disappears a lot from school" . She managed to impress peers with her general knowledge, and ability speak several languages, especially English albeit formally and stiltedly. The lull in conflict between the Science and Magic factions have given Kanno her first reprieve in work and allowed her to focus on school. Recently, the anti-supernatural factions seem to be getting more aggressive, worrying Kanno that her life might be interrupted again.

So begins...

Bing! Bong!
The bells rang throughout the school as the students got ready to leave their classrooms. Jackson stood up and stretched a little before putting his stuff into his bag. "What an exhausting day," Jackson said with a fairly tired look. School wasn't the easiest for him, but he managed well enough. Grabbing his bag Jackson turned towards the door, debating if he should go to club or not. Pausing at the front of the room he looks around, noticing that most of his friends he usually goes to club with have already left.

Kanno wearily opened up her eyes as the bell rang and yawned. It was during days like this when she wondered whether or not going to school was really worth it. After packing up her bag, Kanno got up and was ready to attempt to beat the foot traffic to secure a spot on a tram, but then realized there was no one waiting for her at home. Her dad generally wasn't home often, more so than ever recently. Sighing, she wondered what to do now. Then, she saw the only other student left in the classroom; if she remembered correctly he was a recent transfer from America. She wondered if he knew what people their age generally did for a hobby; all she had was her job for "fun" but that had finally gotten slow recently. Kanno walked up to him and decided to start off on a good note and used her Testament derived English.

" Good day sir. How are you doing on this fine day?"

Jackson gives a slightly puzzled look to his fellow classmate that is soon accompanied by a chuckle. "I am well mi'lady. How might I ask you are doing?" Jackson partners this with a slight bow of the head and arm crossing his chest. Before giving a chance to respond he gives a warm smile, "You don't need to use formalities like that. Where I am from people would think you came from the eighteen hundreds," his tone mostly joking. Jackson points to himself with his close hand, except for his thumb. "The names Jackson Del McHolanway. A mouthful if you ask me. You can call me either Jack or JD," Jackson introduced himself, using his fluent japanese. Even so his American accent came through quite boldly. To many this gave away the fact he was half Japanese; that and how he looked helped to this end.

After Jackson informed her of her incorrect use of English, Kanno became flustered. No one had really corrected her English before then ; in fact at the events her father had taken her to, many dignitaries had seemed impressed with it. "O-Oh is that so? I didn't k-know about that. I'm sorry about butchering your language." She started looking around the room for any excuse to leave the conversation, but there was no one left in the classroom now. Internally sighing, she decided to continue talking with Jackson.

" I'm Kanno Hsu. You can call me Kanno or whatever you would like. I...umm..I've been in and out of uhmm..testing facilities for several years, so I'm not sure what there is to do around our District. My dad told me to try and meet new people now that I'm less uh..busy...this year. You seemed very nice to others last year, so I was wondering if you could show me around."

Konno bit her lips as she realized she may have sounded more awkward than she was trying to. She also realized that Jackson definitely had an accent when he spoke -- there was the possibility that this foreigner was a mage.

" Just out of curiosity, are you perhaps one of the new magi students?"

"Oh, you didn't butcher it. It is just more formal old fashioned sounding than what ot people use these days." Jackson said as a way to try and reassure Kanno of her speech pattern. "Other than that it was perfect," He furthered his reassurance. "As for if I am one of the new magi students, that would be a no. I am an Esper through and through. A Void user from what the scientists told me." Jackson motioned towards the door for them to start on their way out of the classroom. "How about yourself? Are you one of the magi? Or an Esper like myself?"

Hearing Jackson trying reassure her of her English, Kanno felt a faint twinge of thanks towards him.Perhaps he was a nice guy after all. When Jackson informed her that he was in fact not a mage, Kanno inwardly let herself relax and lower her guard; at the very least he wasn't one of the magi that some of the Directors complained about.

" I'm also an esper, not a superstitious magi. I'm the Hardl-- I'm an esper that can manipulate mass. " Kanno silently cursed as she realized she had nearly let slip her designation; as nice as Jackson seemed, it could either get her traced or otherwise taken care of by other factions others linked her name and her designation together.

" So uhm...what did my father tell me to ask? Oh right, so where are we going, and what do you like to do?"

Although he noticed the sudden change in her introduction Jackson shrugged it off. "Well, in the times I don't go to club activities I either find somewhere to practice new tricks with my powers or go explore the city." Jackson took a bit to think. "I doubt she would want to do something like that. And it could be taken more like a date if we go that route," with that Jackson figured something else might be a better choice. "Although if you don't want to do that I know of a good burger place. My treat?" Hoping this wouldn't be taken as a date Jackson offered to show Kanno the burger place he found the other day while checking out the outskirts of the city. "We can use one of my portals to get there faster; we can avoid the busy busses that way too. Like killing two birds with one stone so to speak."

" Hm.yes..kill..." Kanno said quietly. Then she seemed to realize that Jackson was still there and smiled.

" Sorry, uhm....Would you mind just taking me around, and then maybe later to this burger joint? I'm not that hungry right now, so I was hoping to see where other students go for ...fun, and what they do."
As she said this, she started to wonder if this was something like what she saw on TV, when two friends of opposite genders went out together.

" So this kind of outing is called a date, right? :

"Some would call it that," Jackson said with a pause, "And if you ask me it all depends on your definition." Before continuing Jackson creates a black circle plenty large enough for two people to fit through. "Before we take this destination I have to ask, are you afraid of heights?" Even though he wasn't expecting a yes answer, hinted at by the fact he opened the portal before asking, Jackson thought it best to ask just in case. After all, on the other side of the portal was the highest point you could stand on in the city. If someone was afraid of heights they would doubtfully like the view they could get up there.

" Eh? Isn't a date just an outing between two friends?" Kanno said in bewilderment. How many other definitions of a date could there possibly be? She watched as Jackson opened up what seemed to be a portal into nowhere; although she had heard of powers such as the "Void", Kanno still had a lingering suspicion that magic had to have some hand within the power.

" But..uhm..no. No I'm not afraid of heights. Why do you ask? " After a few years of going up and down the Office of the Board of Directors, and scaling several other skyscrapers, Kanno had gotten used to heights. However, she still did have the same fear as most rational humans - falling off and dying.

Suddenly, she felt a vibration in her bag and pulled out her phone. A private number was calling her, and she had a good feeling as to who it was. Kanno sighed and weighed her options : go with Jackson and ignore the call, or take the call and cut her day short. She wasn't sure if it was just how tired she was, or how intrigued she was by Jackon's power, but she put the phone back into her bag and smiled at Jackson. " Well you can take me through whenever you're ready!"

"Very well," Jackson said before walking through the portal. He decided that he should brush off the ignored call for now. Jackson offered his hand through the portal as a way to help guide Kanno through to the other side. On this side he created a railing attached to an slightly extended platform. The platform was made in the style of a gate; that way you couldn't fall through the bottom. Thanks to this it added even more safety to the view. With it so high up the wind blew a little bit, even with no wind at ground level; although the wind was not really too cold. At this height you could see the whole city quite easily. Normally being at this point would be dangerous, especially since the platform had only about three feet to stand on normally; without a rail to boot. Not really meant to be stood on normally. "I like coming up here since without something to help you it is impossible. It is kind of like my own personal getaway location. What do you think?"

Kanno let Jackson lead her through the portal and gave a small gasp when she stepped through to the other side. She'd been many places both in and out of Academy City, but this was the first time she'd been up so high without the constraint of any walls or similar obstructions blocking her view. After Jackson created railing, Kanno gave him a small smile; even if he had possible magic connections, he seemed to be a nice guy.

" Thank you kind sir." After scanning the landscape, she saw the Windowless Building and the Office. It seemed so strange to be even further up than those monolithic skyscrapers. Kanno suddenly noticed that the wind was starting to pick up a little, and blushed as she realized her skirt was also starting to blow.

" It's very....exhilarating. I've been to so many places, yet I've never felt so...free. Well I have, but..well...that's something else.Thank you. Where else do you generally go?"

"You are quite welcome mi'lady," Jackson said with a light smile. "There is the arcade, a great crepe stand in a nice park, then for more of an adrenaline rush I go to the bad part of town. Although that last one isn't really safe with the anti magic and anti esper groups. Found out real quick that they don't like it when you make a fool of them." Jackson chuckled a little at the thought of the thugs in some areas. Even though he was trying not to; even distracting himself from it with conversation; his peripherals noticed the wind blowing Kanno's skirt, which stirred a slight (barely noticeable) blush in Jackson's cheeks. "Is there maybe somewhere you would like to go? Not you would want to go to one of my suggestions. And I live alone in the dorms so I doubt you would want to see my place."

" Oh, well I can't go to your dorm even if I desired to. My father does not allow visits to other people's residential' s until it has been extensively checked. He can uhm..be protective. However, I am interested in this arcade. I've heard people talk about these things often, but I've never been able to go myself. And I suppose crepes would be nice also, if it doesn't inconvenience you of course."

Kanno noticed that Jackson had also talked of "messing" with the extremist groups that had managed to set up in Academy City. She had been there before on a job, and it wasn't the nicest of places; with both Skill Out groups and technology purists controlling some of the areas, one would need to be heavily armed or protected. Ostensibly, some of those extremist groups survived in part of an attempt to "encourage those outside to accept the reality of the world." Jackson needed to be fairly strong , very brave, or just stupid if he went to those places for fun. She decided that it could be a combination of all three. Her phone rang again, but she decided to ignore it--it was very nice up here.

" Ah yes, I was just curious? Where are you from and how did you get to Academy City? It isn't often you see foreigners unless they're incredibly wealthy."

Jackson looked at Kanno confused for a second before coming to his senses. He hadn't really been asked where he had come from before; even when he had just transferred to the school. "I came from America, as I am sure my ever present accent gives away." Jackson smiled at some of the memories he had of there. "As for how I came to Academy City, well I can assure you my family isn't what you would called rich. But both my parents are scientists. My dad is was working in America and my mom used to work in Academy City before they met and moved to America." Jackson turned around and leaned back against the rail, his arms resting to the side on the 'bar' he had made earlier. "They were both offered a very lucrative job here in Academy City. They said it had something to do with furthering some experiment or something. I never really could understand it all. They started work a few months ago. Since I still needed to go to school I applied to a couple and was accepted to all of them. My final pick was the one we are going to now." Jackson turned to face Kanno; still leaning against the rail as he looked to her. "How about you? Your dad must be pretty amazing since you talk of him so much." Jackson had a sincere smile on his face as he asked this question. His plan from here was to open a portal to the arcade once their conversation about their parents and living situation started to come to a close.

Kanno was very surprised when the teacher kicked Jackson out of the classroom too. It didn't seem very logical to get purposefully get punished to her; perhaps it was just an American thing to do. Jackson also seemed to just not give a care in the world as he very casually pushed all his work onto his power; it was a sense of freedom that Kanno felt a brief surge of jealously for.

" Ah..uh well. I'm doing well I suppose. I'm not really sure why you're out here now, but I guess it does give us more time to talk. The teacher doesn't really seem to know what she's talking about. So what exactly are you hoping to get out of your life in Academy City? Join a research organization? Make connections here? Doesn't seem like it'd fit in with the idea of being a..hero."

At first Jackson is caught off guard from Kanno line of questioning. Then he starts to peice some things together. "Is Kanno the girl from last night? No use jumping to a conclusion without proof, for now I'll hold off on the idea though." As he thought this Jackson made it look as though he was thinking of a way to word his answer. "Well I am here at school to have a chance to practice with my power before I graduate. After that I haven't really planned that far; but I want to use my power to help others in whatever I do." Jackson smiled to Kanno, knowing full well that his answer quite cheesy.

"What about yourself? What is your reason for coming to this school?" Jackson decided he would not bring up last night quite yet. Figuring it would be better to wait until he had some more proof before doing so.

Kanno watched Jackson as he answered her question. His body language and his tone had both shifted from a carefree student to someone more wary. She had a sinking suspicious that he wasn't as dumb as she had thought that he could be. More likely than not he was trying to figure out if she had been involved in the incident last night. Then again, she could just be too paranoid from years of working in the dark side.

" What a...noble goal. As for me I have been ill for a lot of my child hood, and I was also a Child Error, so there wasn't particularly much of a childhood for me I suppose. When my father ..found and adopted me, I had to go through a long stay in a hospital being treated. Even after that, I just had a private tutor of sorts, so I never have had a chance to really go out in the public nor a proper school. He's finally let me attend this year. I'm not sure what I want to do in the future if I ever get out of this hel- city. I'm sure my father has already planned out a future for me anyways."

The bell finally rang and Kanno dropped the buckets on the ground with a sigh of relief. " Well it seems we'll be free in a bit. Will you be going out with your friends?"

"Sounds like you had a tough upbringing," was all Jackson could get out before the bell rang to release them. Dropping the buckets jackson used his portals to grab his and Kanno's stuff. Kanno's stuff appeared next to her and Jackson's stuff on his body. "I have homework and need to get my outfit ready for tomorrow. I doubt I'll have the time to hang with my friends today. Might head out later tonight though; go say hi to some friends of mine." The way Jackson said friends would imply he was going to see about doing vigilantee work work again; not that anyone would know that unless they knew he was the vigilantee though.

After hearing Jackson's plans for the day, Kanno had a sneaking suspicion he'd be out doing something again tonight. However, it wasn't any of her business so she just smiled and said her goodbyes to him. She decided to walk to the laboratory to check on the status of her replacement arm. It was getting to be a pain not being able to use one of her arms--it was like so many years ago again.

As she was walking down the street, a wave of nausea overtook her. After nearly vomiting twice, Kanno was able to regain control of herself. However, now there was a tinge of red to her vision. Something was happening to her, and she wasn't sure what. Kanno stopped to let her breathing recover then continued on to the lab, more likely than not they would know what was happening. It took a while as the sun was starting to set by the time she reached the entrance to the research laboratory. It looked dingy, but she knew better; it was being funded by a Director.

After taking an elevator that descended underground, she finally reached the area where she needed. A few interns and lab technicians noticed her and tried to stop her from proceeding, but one of the researchers intervened and waved them off. " Welcome back Kanno. It's been a while since we've been together hasn't it?" The head researchers was an outwardly friendly researcher, but possessed not even an ounce of morality. She also remembered that he also competed with other organizations like the one that the McHollonways were in charge of for funding. Thanks to Kanno's success, he had won the funding war, at least for now. After realizing Kanno's disinterest in small talk, he changed the subject.

" The new cybernetic parts are almost done. It'll likely be done somewhere after tomorrow. We've upgraded it to withstand more thanks to the data you've been providing on your tasks. You know, now that I've already upgraded a fair portion of your body, it would be nice if I could also do some ocular cybernetic research. We did your teeth last time and it worked out pretty well."

Kanno gave a deathly glare at the researcher. She was disgusted by this man, although she owed her current body to him, it was very painful getting it, and he always wanted to use her as a guinea pig in more experiments. However, until her father said it was needed she didn't want to give up anymore of her body to cybernetics. The last time she had willingly agreed to replace her teeth , they had all been none too gently ripped out and replaced with boron nitride. It was then she decided to stop agreeing to anything more.

" No. Anyways, I've been under the weather lately. I have had nausea and tremors randomly lately."

The researcher just shrugged and replied, " Well I don't know why. You'll just need to go to a hospital and find out. Maybe I can give you a very thorough exam tomorrow when you come for the reintegration of your arm."

Leaving with a great deal of disappointment, Kanno left the building and realized that it was dark. It was also around the time Jackson would be roaming the streets. After a few minutes of internal debate, she decided that she wasn't going to go bother looking for him; he could do as he wanted in his spare time. Walking through the city at this time could lead her to encounter him anyways, but she decided to just leave it to fate or destiny or whatever it was people believed in.

After making his way home Jackson quickly finished up his homework and starting on his outfit for the following day. By the time he finished getting things together and finished eating dinner it was getting dark out. "Looks about time to have some fun," Jackson said to himself as he opened a portal and went through it.

On the other side he came out to a train yard with many cargo trailers. The other day he overheard some guys talking about a hiest in this train yard. Or at least this was the closest thing to what they were talking about from what Jackson knew. Sure enough there were some guys sneaking around breaking into some of the trailers. Jackson found an empty trailer and put it in the air above the thieves. They jumped out of the way before it landed on top of them thanks to Jackson using some noise to draw their attention to it. Although now they were worried and looking around for the culprit.

"There," one of the two said as he pointed up to where Jackson was floating. "He must have done that!" As far as the thieves knew Jackson was only trying to crush them. Little did they know he was the one that drew their attention to the trailer he placed above them as well. The two guys pulled out metal rods that started to buzz and glow. Jackson recognized these weapons as the same ones used against him before. These rods were able to hit him through his Void Armor technique. He would have to be careful in this fight lest he wanted some broken bones. Luckily that task could be accomplished by simply staying high in the air out of reach.

"You guys just never learn do you?" Jackson rhetorically asked as he opened a portal and sent rubber bullets flying at the thieves. This quickly got them to back down and run off. Sadly a third thief managed to get something from a container and ran off with it. Whatever it was Jackson could hear them saying they got and should get out of there. Before Jackson could make chase though the thugs vanished into thin air; almost like they had either an Esper or Mage there to help them escape.

A little dissapointed Jackson started off back home. Although he decided to walk this time. It wasn't really a bad distance, and he had pleanty of time to get home before it got too late too. Besides, it was a nice night and he finished early as well. Anyone else that might be walking around could easily spot him since he wasn't trying to be sneaky at all; not that very many people would recognize though.

As Kanno walked home, she noticed a group of Skill-Outs hurrying past, most of them wounded. For some reasons, against her own logic, there was an inward grin spreading across her face. It had been a while since her life had been interesting for once, not just an endless slog. It would seem Jackson was being active tonight. Even through her mind insisted there was no benefit to be derived from looking for Jackson, Kanno's body started moving anyways.

Running in the direction that the gangster wannabes had run from, it didn't take too long for Kanno to find Jackson. Removing her maniacal grin and calming herself down, Kanno proceeded to put on the guise of the Kanno that Jackson knew and gracefully walked towards him. She waved to him and called out, " Fancy seeing you in this part during these hours. Curfew for most students is soon isn't it?"

"Got it," Jackson said as he created portals to use as steps leading towards District One. Thanks to the light breeze and how smooth Jackson was as he 'walked' it made it seem like they were skating across the sky. The view from this height was different than from the tower since it was night. This time the city lights lit the ground playfully. At this height you could see pretty much the entire city. "Like the view from here?" Jackson asked as he used his portals to keep them safe.

"Naw, it's quite alright. And honestly I would have to say I wouldn't mind. I just don't kill them because I don't see it as my place to decide their fate. Besides I have too much fun toying with them." Jackson chuckles at this, trying to lighten the mood some. As they neared District One Jackson quickly spotted Kanno's home and started over that way. "Is your arm cybernetic? If so once your arm is better would you mind if I tried something?" Jackson was clearly hinting at trying to make things easier for her if her cybernetics were damaged in the future.
