Introduction
After a while, in 2073 from what I hear, we set up the first moon colony. It was called Eden. We thought at that moment we had it all. Then, the moon colony revolted. They wanted independence from the United Republics of Earth and declared war if not. Earth denied this and then the URE was shattered. Earth split into factions. All with like concepts, but different in some way. New countries were formed. Eden boasted an anti-matter bomb. That would turn Earth into nothing. The nuclear war then began. Bombs flew through the sky. The next thing we knew in three hours was nothing. The majority of us died.
I neglected to mention that throughout America and Canada with some of Mexico included, there was a shelter system. Lockdown Shelters as they were called. Each could only safely fit 500 people with a maximum of 1000 uncomfortably, but safely. Training procedures took place for a month and by the time the bombs fell, training was near its end. Everyone though the sirens were a training siren. The didn't care. When the bombs hit, most of the shelters were so underpopulated, they were said to be able to last another half a century on top of the expected 900 years. Most shelters ha 400-600 signed up residents. When the bombs fell, they had about 150-300. So what happened to the rest of them?
The bombs struck and had a strange reaction for some. Some turned into zombie-like beings. While some basically are zombies, a few are still humans, just missing some flesh and live longer. They are called "Freaks" by most, but the biggest organization called the Confederation of West America officially recognizes them as Flesh Mongers. I think its easier to call them Freaks. It mutated every animal and killed a lot of people and animal alike. Reluctantly, some people actually used their bomb shelters and survived. They are called Dwellers or Natives. The ones from the Lockdown Shelters are typically recognized as Surfacers.
I am a Dweller descendant, still called a Dweller. My great grandfather was one of those people that stocked up and got into a shelter. He stayed for ten years and then popped out to realize, his house was gone. He found some wood and built the best living environment he could. That's where I'm at right now. One-hundred fifty years later and it still is standing. I don't stay here, but from what I hear, there's a supply of some good booze my grandfather left here before he moved out. That was thirty years ago, but some of the beer I drink is pre-war, so its better than most.
Now, back to life out here. Earlier I mentioned the CWA right? Yeah they are really the controlling government around here. By around here, I mean from the California coast to the west edge of Texas. That includes from the bottom of Washington to the bottom of Baja California. They want to unite Western America.
They are the ones that decided on currency. They call them Pences. Basically, a full pence is a bottle cap. Half a pence is a can tab thing. The rarest thing out here though, is dollar bills. One dollar, two dollar, five dollar, ten dollar. Anything that was pre-war money is rare as hell. So, they made any pre-war coins 2 pences and any pre-war bills 5 pences. It used to be this way only in Confederate City, CA. Then, as the CWA grew, so did the popularity of the pricing system. Now, everywhere uses pences, except for one or two places. Drink a bottle of beer or a fifth, get paid. Drink a coke, get paid! Have a family coin collection? Not anymore you don't. Now you have a good little fortune. Its pretty simple right? Some cities, you turn in all your pences and get an equal amount of their currency. On your way out, you just swap it.
There is also another faction. A fearless militant group called the Brothers of Bullets or Brotherhood of Freedom are right behind the CWA. The run through fear or through brainwashed loyalty. Their leader, is a power hungry man who you cannot stop if you tried. Even in death he says he will still not have been conquered. They really only control the Southeast America and the rest of Upper Mexico. That still leaves so much more. Who controls that? Really no one does. Spread out small factions and scattered cities do.
For example, if you like civilized high-class life ad are not contaminated by radiation and happen to live in or around the Monroe area south of Detroit, you probably turn to Torre de la Ciudad (Tower City). It is a small settlement of 170 people all built around a ten story hotel. The tower was fixed up and used as a living center for many, but when the owner died the motives changed.. He left it to the left hand man of his named Roberto de Leon. He made plans for a city to be built which can house more people looking for a taste of civilized life. Essentially, the tower was made the capitol building and then the walls were built and the city was created. They even roofed off the whole complex and made it sort of blend with the Hotel. Torre de la Ciudad was its name.
That's not important now though. With a settlement comes cults, factions, or something along those lines. So you are part of a faction whether you know it or not. There is no non-faction associated people, only ones who think they are.
