Cyrus

4 AM. Cyrus stared at the harsh red light being emitted from the digital clock in the dark of his assigned bedroom. He had been trying to sleep for a few hours now, having set an alarm for 5 AM. The first Spider attack begins at dawn. How frustratingly non-specific. When was dawn, exactly? He rubbed his temples – he had a throbbing headache. At this point, he might as well just give up on sleep, because there was just no way it was going to happen. Even if he did manage to somehow fall asleep, there was a risk that he might oversleep the alarm and still be sleeping when the attack began.

Cyrus had just come to this decision when suddenly a brash, loud, frighteningly familiar voice boomed over the intercom:

“HOW DOES – WORK – I – BUT IF YOU – OH, I GET IT! YOU JUST PUSH THIS BIG RED BUTTON OVER HERE. AWESOME! AM I LOUD ENOUGH? CAN EVERYONE HEAR ME?

HELLOOOOOOOOO! MY NAME IS BRIAR UNDERWOOD. I AM AN AWESOME THREE STAR PSYCHIC THAT CAN SET THOSE STUPID SPIDERS ON FIRE!

I HOPE I DIDN’T WAKE ANYONE UP OUT THERE! BUT YOU GUYS SHOULDN’T BE SLEEPING, YOU KNOW! MY BROTHER, CYRUS –”
And suddenly all hope of pretending that he didn’t know Briar was gone – “HE WAS ALL LIKE ‘WE NEED TO TRY AND GET SOME REST, BRIAR,’ BUT COME ON YOU GUYS, I MEAN, WE’RE UNDER ATTACK! DON’T YOU THINK SLEEP IS FOR LOSERS? DON’T YOU THINK WE SHOULD HAVE A MEETING? I THINK WE NEED TO HAVE A PLAN! I MEAN, OBVIOUSLY I WILL BE AT THE FRONT LINES OF THE BATTLE KICKING ASS, BUT LIKE MY BROTHER WOULD SAY, YOU SHOULD ALWAYS HAVE A PLAN –”

Cyrus had a headache, which meant that he really didn’t want to use his abilities. But Briar left him no choice. He opened up a mindlink, somewhat violently, snapping at Briar:

Dear brother, you really don’t need to talk so much about me in your amazing speech.

Briar had always fanboyed the mindlink ability. He gushed back, his thoughts so strong that it came across as yelling: IS IT AMAZING? REALLY? DO YOU THINK SO? DO YOU THINK PEOPLE WILL BE INSPIRED? I WAS REALLY NERVOUS, ACTUALLY, BUT I’VE BEEN TRYING SO HARD –

It’s wonderful. They will definitely be inspired. To punch you in the face. Now please wrap it up.

OKAY, BRO!

“ANYWAY,” continued Briar on the intercom, “I THINK WE SHOULD ALL HAVE A MEETING IN THE AUDITORIUM SO IF YOU WANT TO HAVE A MEETING PLEASE GO TO THE AUDITORIUM. IF NO ONE SHOWS UP, THEN I WILL HAVE TO SING 99 BOTTLES OF BEER ON THE WALL ON THIS INTERCOM THING. I LEARNED THAT LAST SUMMER ON A ROADTRIP WITH MY BROTHER. HE LOVES THAT GAME. 99 BOTTLES OF BEER ON THE WALL, 99 BOTTLES OF BEER – 98 BOTTLES OF BEER ON THE WALL, 98 BOTTLES OF BEER –”

And suddenly Cyrus recalled mental trauma that he thought he had previously buried deep, deep within.

Briar

Briar stood on stage in the auditorium, clutching at the microphone. A fair amount of people had shown up, which, to be honest, he hadn’t expected. It looked like about a hundred people, which would easily be half of the students. He felt skahy and nauseous, which was an inappropriate reaction for a three star leader. He had to buck up.

Briar spotted his brother standing in the crowd, his hands in his pockets and a familiar frown on his face. Briar waved enthusiastically. His brother gave a lukewarm wave in response.

“OKAY,” said Briar into the microphone, pausing briefly in order to clear his voice. “THANK YOU ALL FOR COMING. SO LIKE I WAS SAYING ON THE COMM THING, I THINK THAT WE NEED A PLAN. IS THIS LOUD ENOUGH? CAN ALL OF YOU HEAR ME? SO DOES ANYONE, LIKE, HAVE A PLAN?”

He looked nervously around the crowd. Somewhere, crickets chirped.

Fortunately, his big bro stepped on stage to save him.

“What my brother means,” said Cyrus, taking the microphone from him, “is that, in the event of an attack as described on the posters,”

What did Cyrus mean? Of course there was going to be an attack!

“In case of such an event,” continued Cyrus. “We need to know everyone’s abilities. For example, my brother here can start fires. Like that girl in Firestarter.” Briar thought he was much cooler than her, but whatever. “I can read minds, and I can also open mental links between myself and other people. So, hopefully, that will be useful in terms of communication during an attack. I mean, obviously we won’t have the intercom or microphones then,” finished Cyrus, chuckling to himself. Briar chuckled along, somewhat nervously, feeling like he’d missed the joke.

Wednesday

What a farce. Wednesday had been getting plenty of beauty sleep before that loud, droll boy had just about burst her eardrums. Looking around, Wednesday could tell that many of the other psychics were scared. It was because they had been given inferior abilities. No matter how the battle went, Wednesday did not have to worry. Nothing could pierce her force field. She would live, that was for sure.

And now – now she had a chance to stake her claim in the group. Stars be damned. It was obvious that no one would follow that annoying little boy, regardless of how many stars he had. But his older brother
he had a calm, confident presence

Wednesday had to stop that immediately.

She raised her hand. “Excuse me,” she said, pushing past the people in front of her and climbing onto the stage. She motioned for the microphone.

“My name is Wednesday Williams,” said Wednesday into the microphone. “I’m able to create force fields. I should be able to keep a lot of people safe in the event of an attack.” Provided that they’re good at groveling, snickered Wednesday mentally to herself. “However, I’m not so sure that we need to focus on individual abilities right now. Isn’t the question of stars more important? I understand that this boy has three stars, but how many stars do you have?” She looked meaningfully at Cyrus.

“That’s not – the star system isn’t – I don’t think that’s what we should be focusing on right now is – I mean, in the event of an attack
” Cyrus trailed off, his voice suddenly small.

Just as she’d suspected. He didn’t have three stars. Hell, judging by how nervous he suddenly got, he probably didn’t even have two stars. A one star jockey. Or even a no-star plant. Who the hell did he think he was, getting on stage and giving everyone orders like that?

“I only have two stars,” said Wednesday. “But I’m not claiming to lead us, either.” She could feel Cyrus glaring at her, which she gleefully ignored. “I think what we need is all of the three stars on stage, here, now.”

She handed the microphone back to Briar, who looked very, very confused.

It doesn’t matter who they officially call “leader”. Soon enough, people will realize that the only way to survive is to befriend me and to get included in my force field.

And that will be
true power.

I am going to sodomize that little fuck with a rusty trebuchet.

It was an odd thought for someone who had not gone to sleep at all that night, but a quick scan over the white powdery wonderland his room had become and the twenty dollar bill sticking out of his nose, unused, made it a bit less odd. James had been startled out of his concentrated snorting by some prepubescent kid who happened to get a microphone. He took a big coke free sniff and found that Briar, because that was apparently his name, to be the tangy sweetness of a rather nervous joy. He was happy, but it seemed to mask a nervousness and some form of adoration for someone. James stuck his tongue out and canvassed the air around him, something was wrong with the taste.

It's that mind linker again.

He scrunched his nose up and put his money back in his pocket. He didn't like the way linked minds tasted. They were too odd, mixtures of flavors that should never be mixed. It felt like he was drinking orange juice after brushing his teeth, but in his brain. James stuck his tongue back in his mouth and did his best to scoop some of his special treat back into its baggie and shove it in his pocket. His room had a little bathroom with a sink and toilet and he went in there to splash some water on his face and adjust his camp shirt. After a few iterations of buttoning and unbuttoning in different patterns James settled on completely unbuttoning it and leaving his scar prominently displayed. You're a bit of an attention whore. he thought to himself Well you're a bit of shut the fuck up. he answered to himself.

He decided on an extremely baggy pair of black pants, with a belt to keep them from sagging because he was an adult and didn't need anyone seeing his Scooby Doo underoos. On his bed, covered in a fine sheen of sweat, was one of the posters and James grabbed it on the way out. He'd already read it and had already realized that he could do absolutely nothing when it came to fighting with his powers. By the time he'd showed up to the auditorium that Wednesday chick had already taken to the floor and started talking about how important stars were and with that, he saw, was his cue to sit in the back and start tasting.

First was the telepath, he tasted of bitter shame and bland resignation. He had a slight spark of hope in him that made his mind a bit more palatable but he seemed mainly stable as far as mental stability went. So he was boring. Next he went for the filthy kid, sniffing and taking deep breaths in his general direction. He smelt like tangy and spark. He would be fun to mess with, all those bundled up loyalties and hair trigger tempers, it's like walking through an emotional minefield. He stuck his tongue out to lick his lips and caught a few others coming down the halls.

Jimmy's Ninhakujo was laid out before him. He had read the flyer and knew of the coming attack, so he had prepared himself for a fight. All of the preparations were made. The incense was lit, and he was doing the customary hand signs of the Koga ninja before battle. Everything was going fine until he heard a kid screaming over the intercom. "TEIMEI!" Jimmy yelled and punched the ground, causing it to shake slightly. He then calmed himself and remained focused. Though, instead of dawning his gear and then going to the auditorium, he thought it was best he didn't walk into the auditorium dressed as a freaking ninja. He wasn't sure how the others would react, so he threw on a white T-shirt and black sweatpants. Jimmy then opened his door and proceeded down the hallway towards the auditorium.

As he walked down the hallway, his barefeet feeling the high quality business carpet of the building, he noticed another student who looked like he was a rockeer proceed pass the door to the auditorium and then outside. This peaked Jimmy's curiosity and he walked up to the door the student had walked out of and peered through the small window in the door. It seems he was attempting to raise a wall of some sort. A wall wouldn't do much against a spider, but it might provide some cover if people had long range abilities. Presuming that these spiders had weapons, of which Jimmy highly doubted. He decided to leave the man to his devices and walked into the auditorium.

Jimmy took a spot on the wall next to the door, standing at the back of the room. He listened to a few people speak, it seems a girl with force field powers wanted to identify all of the three star people. He much preferred the elder of the Underwood brothers plan. To have everyone identify themselves so we know what we are working with. They should still have about two hours till dawn, though he wasn't sure it applied in the Mock Universe. The three star cryokinetic Luke's view point was very rational and calm. It made the most sense as he agreed with Cyrus. He wished to voice his support of the idea and to give suggestions. "I agree." Jimmy projected over the auditorium. He then made his way to the stage, still talking. "My name is James Murdock, but I want all of you to call me Jimmy." At this point Jimmy reached the stage and jumped on top of it nimbly. "I have the ability to create physical objects with my mind by manipulating the energy my brain gives off called psionic energy. I can create weapons, shields and platforms. I have also been trained since I was 12 in the art of Ninjitsu. I know how to fight and I want everyone to know that I will do my best to support everyone here. Because of the situation we have been thrown into, our survival is centered on each other. We came here strangers, but in order to survive, we must become an army and a family." Jimmy's voice boomed throughout the audience. "Wednesday here has suggested bringing the people that the Peace have deemed leaders, but leaders are only as good as the men and women who follow them. We will need all of you to say your name and power so we all know how we can use your skills to our advantage. No need to come to the stage to say it, you can do it from your seat." Jimmy then looked out over the audience.

He waited a few seconds, but no one said anything. "Look, I know your scared, I'm scared too. I was told yesterday that I was the product of an alien experiment and that today at dawn, giant alien spiders will be coming to kill us. If you are not frightened by that fact, even if you are confident in your abilities, you are an arrogant fool. Everyone feels fear, but my sensei taught me something about fear. The key to fear is not to hide it or forget about it. The key is to face it, with all of it's reality and accept it. Accept this fear, and it can not control you. If you believe that will not work for you, then think about this. The flyer said some will be released today to combat us......some. Not a squadron, not an army, some. There at least 100 of us in this room alone, I doubt everyone came to this meeting so there may be 100 or more through out the building. All of them have powers, ready to combat this threat. Our fear is that of what we don't understand. But, there are over 200 super beings in this building, out there are some big spiders. Why should we fear facing them? The powers we posses are told to be wielded only by the gods!" Jimmy yelled out over the crowd. He then turned around and made his way over to the young bot Briar. He knelt down so 6'2" form was closer to his. "This kid can set things on fire with his mind! I'm guessing if he can do it with a house, he could do it to a spider, right? i realize i have yet to tell you what star rank I am, well, I am a two star. I don't believe peace saw the true potential of leadership in everyone here, but I truly believe they did get it right in the few. I mean, look at Briar. I bet a lot of you are thinking 'How the hell did this kid get to be a three star?' Well, you're all here aren't you? If he hadn't gone over the intercom, most of us would still be sleeping. You might have died in your sleep this day if it it wasn't for this boy." Jimmy said in a serious tone glaring over the crowd.

Jimmy was honestly surprised with himself. He was simply stating what he had been feeling and it seems people were listening. He stood up from where Briar was and made his way toward the end of the stage. "Look, I'm no leader, I simply want to do my best to make sure everyone survives. That does not entail me leading you, so yes, we will need a few leaders to organize all of our talents, but how can we expect to do that if they do not know our talents?" He then made his way far stage left, which was right to the audience. "I have an offensive ability. I suggest that everyone with an offensive ability state it and move your self to this side of the room. Defensive on the opposite and support in the middle. This is simply a suggestion to make it easier on the leaders. I am going to shut up now, and let you think for yourselves." Jimmy then crossed his hand behind his back and stood there silently. Internally he was freaking out, his sensei always said he had potential to help people in more than just fighting, all he had to do was say what he felt and he did. He didn't know if anyone would listen to him, but he put in his incredibly long two-cents worth and that was good enough for him.

"Where is the off button! Or at least some kind of plug" Tyli sighed in irritation as she studied the intercom

Tyli was desperately trying to find some way to shut off the intercom, she already had a headache, giving the time she had laid around thinking about that message about the spiders coming at dawn, before she fell asleep. This certainly wasn't what she had in mind when she first came here. She banged against the intercom for a moment when she couldn't find the way to shut it off. She did found herself wide awake, probably happened by trying to find the off button. She listened to the end of the message, asking them to come to the auditorium. She rubbed her eyes and slowly picked up her coat, zipping it close. She bound her hair up and left the room. Making her way to the auditorium.

She entered the room about the time that Wednesday was holding her speech about how important their stars where. She was finding that she didn’t exactly liked the way the girl talked to that guy. The guy , which she could name Cyrus because it had been all over the intercom, that obviously only tried to help and state some kind of plan. She watched how Jimmy came onto the stage to speech as well. Asking everyone to tell their names and their power. When he went quiet the whole room was completely still. Causing him to continue talking about being scared and stuff. Taking the boy as an example for the fact that everyone must have some special something, power of just character, that might be able to help. In this case the fact the boy woke everyone by yelling over the intercom. He might be right in the fact that they could’ve been killed, but it still didn’t make it less obnoxious. It went quiet again.

She stood up with a smile on her face, she couldn’t help but smile at the long speech that was given mere moment ago. “I am Tyli Hoff, nice meeting ya all!” it was currently hard to catch her without a smile, after all she was meeting tons of new people and some seemed really nice or cute. “I can put up illusions to fool someone’s nose, eyes and ears. I can also fake the touch but only on small illusions. I’m still practicing with the large ones. And I’d like to point out that I think Cyrus and Jimmy are right” she smiled and said back down again. She was hopping up and down a little, excited to hear who would introduce themselves next.

Jimmy turned to Cyrus and nodded to him. "You can count on me." he said in a pretty serious tone. He then heard the announcement come on. It seems that the attack had begun. He was formulating a plan on how to quickly deal with the situation, when the guy who could see predictions said that the bitch who asked for money had killed 10 of them and they're were only 10 left. Jimmy ran to the window to confirm this. He looked down into the courtyard and saw 10 spiders. He then looked up and saw many moving things coming towards them throughout the city. "Actually, I have a feeling that that was only the first wave." When this had dawned on him, he then turned and started running in-between the two groups and projecting. "Alright! Both groups will quickly and calmly make two lines. you will then make for the door, whoever is next to you when you reach that door, you grab their hands because that is your partner. You have to watch out for him or her. You grab their hands until you reach the door that leads to battle. Once their is 10 people at the door, you go! You can only exit to the courtyard if there is nine other people in your group. When you fight them, aim for their heads, necks and upper torsos, these are the killing points on a spider, now....GO!" Then they all were lining up and following instructions.

He saw Briar run into the offense line but he grabbed his arm. "Woah, buddy. Your with me, special orders." He winked at him and took off between the lines and made a beeline towards his room, which was down the hall a ways. He turned down a few hall ways, keeping a pace that he felt Briar could handle, they then reached his door. He stopped and turned to Briar. "OK, now, I need you to guard me while i dress, then we are going straight to the front lines!" With that, he ran into his room. He un-dressed and as quickly as possible put on his Ninhakujo. He then dawned his mask and walked out of the door. He looked down to Briar. "Let's go."

Jimmy sprinted down the hallway, hoping he hadn't lost Briar, when he came upon the same rocker guy from earlier, holding what looked like a spear and a spider was racing down the hall towards him. Jimmy created glowing shuriken and took off towards the creature. He threw all of the shuriken into it's eyes, it screeched in pain. An odd colored puss was leaking out of it's wounds, it stank, really bad. Jimmy had no time to lose though, so he created a Ninjato that glowed, jumped over the spider, looking like an upside down T, and decapitated it. He then landed in the same position on his feet. He then turned around and looked at him through the eye opening of his mask. "Come on! Everyone is mobilizing to the front lines, you can come with us, we're going to need everyone." After saying that, he turned around and took off down the hall way towards the exit.

Instead of going straight outside, he decided to go up one more floor, when they got to a large window over looking the fight, Jmmy broke it and turned to Briar. "Okay, Briar, I need you to be our mortar. I want you to stay up here and rain fire down on our enemies. Basically, stay up here and blow up some crawlies. We're all counting on you Briar, I know you won't let us down." With that, Jimmy jumped out of the window.

While Jimmy was still in the air, he created a glowing kusarigama and wrapped it around the neck of the spider and pulled, decapitating the spider. He used the momentum of the pull to fling himself deeper into the fray of the battle. It seems they were doing well, some people had chosen to saty in the auditorium shooting there powers from a safe distance, but most were in the fray. He decided to wade past the wall and faced the on coming spiders. Still wielding the kusarigama, he began to swing it, it's speed growing. He then stopped running, and stood in place as the spiders scurried closer. Jimmy's heart beat slowed and he was finally calm, when that happened, the blade of the kusarigama increased to that of a large scythe blade. Jimmy then started to run towards the enemy and began slash down spiders like a scythe to wheat. Legs and guts flew into the air all around Jimmy, but he did not stop swinging.

He had killed 9 of the in-coming spiders, 3 had slipped past him. He decided to go back and wait with the others for the next wave. He leaped into the air and began making platforms for him to jump off of so he stayed in the air. He noticed a crawly had cornered three people, one was holding it back with water, but it would be upon them soon. He hopped over towards them until he was standing right above the spider. He looked down and formed a large guillotine blade in his hands. He then cut off the platform and dropped down onto the spider, cutting it in half. After it had cut the spider, the blade shattered, so had his kusarigama. Each of his wepons had a hit limit so he had to pay more attention to that. He walked over to the three kids to see if they were ok, but the upper half of the crawly had startted to move, so he created his ninjato, drove into the spiders skull and twisted. hen it stopped kicking he made sure that they were still ok and made a bridge for them to go back behind the wall with the others, after they had crossed, Jimmy jumped over and looked around, there were only a few spiders left in the courtyard. He then leaped into the airr and made a platform to have a better vantage point to see the next wave coming. hey were about 21 seconds away. "We can do this." Jimmy said to himself.

Briar

"Okay!" said Briar to Jimmy, before he jumped out the window. "You can depend on me!"

Briar could barely contain himself. He had an assignment. Everyone was depending on him. He knew that it wasn't right to feel a little bit happy in a desperate situation like this, but still, he felt a little bit happy. The Spiders were scary - there was no question about that. But Briar had never been in a situation where his powers had been beneficial rather than harmful. When he was younger, Briar hadn't been very good at controlling his powers, and he tended to start fires by accident whenever he became emotional. He had hurt a lot of people that way. He was lucky that no one had been killed. But Cyrus still had those scars...

Why am I thinking about that now? Briar slapped his face with both hands. Time to kick some ugly Spider butt!

Briar began to rain fire down on the Spiders. He tried to take out the Spiders that neared Jimmy, but for the most part, Jimmy was faster at taking them out himself. Also, Briar felt nervous about accidentally hitting a human with the blast. So after a while he began to focus on Spiders that were away from psychics. It was much more difficult than he had thought, because they moved so fast. Briar needed at least a second or two to concentrate and 'aim', and usually the Spiders wouldn't even give him that. He ended up missing a lot, charring the ground around the Spiders rather than hitting the Spiders themselves.

Damn it damn it damn it damn it! I'm not being useful at all! I'm just making it more dangerous for everyone else!

Briar became so angry for a moment that he actually almost lost control of his powers. He forced himself to breathe more slowly. In. Out. Then he began to try again, more methodically this time. Since it was difficult for him to hit a single Spider dead-on, he instead aimed for groups of Spiders clumped close together. He wasn't able to kill the Spiders like he might with a single dead-on hit, but he was able to injure them. Briar also practiced predicting the movements, and aiming for that instead - and more than a few times, it worked.

"Hell yeah!" yelled Briar, after successfully blowing a Spider's head into a crater of smoke. "Take that, asshole!"

Suddenly a kid around his age appeared next to him, blowing up Spiders with some kind of weird gravity attack. "Hey! Get your own window!" growled Briar. And why did the kid get to name his attack? Briar could name his attack too! "Fireball, fireball!" chanted Briar, successfully missing quite a few Spiders in a row.

But Briar soon became distracted from his competitiveness. Down in the fray, Jimmy wasn't doing so well. He had taken a bunch of injuries. "Ninja kid!" yelled Briar, ready to propel himself out the window. He stopped as someone grabbed him from behind. Briar assumed at first that it was that his brother, but instead he heard the patronizing voice of that Wednesday jerk.

Image

Wednesday

"What the hell are you doing, kid? There's nothing about your abilities that saves you from a fall to the death. I don't really want to have to look at your smashed corpse. Let me handle this."

Wednesday gave the brat her most winning smile. The sort of smile that deserved an accompanying thumb's up, but Wednesday did not do that because she was a classy broad.

Damn the Peace and damn their grades. If not for the grading system, Wednesday would have done the only sensible thing: run, hide, and set up a force field around her. She would have emerged later from the fray, claiming to have killed a few spiders. The field was so large, and the players so many, that who would say different? Wednesday didn't know how the Peace worked, but she assumed that they were watching somehow, and that her absence would be noted. So she took the next route and opted to wait for everyone else to deplete themselves, and for the Spiders to thin, so that she could jump in like some kind of savior and get a whole heap of glory. Well, the Spiders hadn't thinned as much as she had hoped, but people were definitely depleted, and she wasn't sure how much longer she could stay on the fringes before the Peace docked her grade.

Wednesday looked at both Briar and Seph with an intense glare. "If either of you diapered brats accidentally hits me with one of your ranged attacks, I will murder you in your beds."

With that, Wednesday jumped out the window. She jumped down a flight of her forcefields to the ground, just in time for a Spider to lurch at her.

And Wednesday cut the Spider in half with a force field.

Image

Briar

"Whoah, cool!" said Briar with a fist pump. Then he realized he'd just complimented a mortal enemy, so he scowled instead. "I mean, show off."

To Briar's immense relief, Jimmy had headed back inside. He looked hurt, but at least he was retreating, and maybe someone would be able to treat his wounds. At this point, the best Briar could do was to try and keep as many Spiders out as possible.

But he hadn't even crafted another explosion before suddenly some kid came in, yelling about a Spider in the bathroom.

"What, really?!" Briar immediately stepped away from the window. That Wednesday chick seemed to have it under control, and that Metsu guy wasn't doing bad, either. "Okay, I'll defeat it!"

Briar left his post, ran into the bathroom, and exploded the Spider in such a way that he completely destroyed the bathroom and sent himself flying back across the hall.

Oh yeah, thought Briar as he rolled on the ground, putting himself out. That's why Cyrus is always telling me not to use my powers in cramped spaces...

Well, the Spider was dead anyway.

Image

Wednesday

Wednesday used her abilities in a myriad of ways: she created force fields in Spiders, protected people who were able to hit, protected herself. As far as she was concerned, she was doing pretty good. While other kids were getting torn the hell up, Wednesday barely had a scratch. She felt even more elated when the numbers began to thin and thin until there were barely any new Spiders coming in at all.

Yes, thought Wednesday to herself with a gleeful grin, When they wonder who turned the tide, I'm sure all fingers will point to me!

It was then that the shadow fell over Wednesday.

Wednesday looked up to see a gigantic Spider about five stories tall.

Cyrus

Cyrus was a lover, not a fighter. Currently, his objective was to stay alive in case anyone needed to use the mindlink. So he stayed in the auditorium, which turned out to be a bad idea when some guy came running in with a Spider at his back. At that moment, Cyrus thought only one thing, and that thing was Holy fucking shit on a stick.

He followed the guy out into a hallway, gasping for breath. "Do something!" screeched Cyrus, grabbing the guy. Cyrus was not much good under pressure, so the thought that the guy was more defensive rather than offensive did not occur to him. When the guy did nothing, Cyrus began to run along the hall, his hand still attached to the guy's arm, so most likely he was dragging him along as well. The Spider followed, tearing up the floor as it approached.

It was just about then that Wednesday opened a mindlink and communicated a message. That message was:

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Cyrus nearly tripped.

Are you trying to kill me?! Cyrus roared back, returning to his previous activity of running like hell.

But Wednesday didn't come back with some snide comment. Cyrus thought for a minute that she might be dead, and that he had just heard her death thrall. It occurred to him, as much as anything could occur to him at a moment in which he was actively running away from impending doom, that he might hear a lot of death thralls in the coming days. But Wednesday wasn't dead yet, and she came back a few seconds later with a more coherent thought: There's a huge Spider out here, I need help - it's several stories tall -

I'm going to broadcast you to everyone returned Cyrus. His head was pounding, but he opened all the mindlinks (although he did not open Briar's, because the last thing he needed was Briar running out to try and tackle a gigantic Spider) and sent out the rest of her message:

A huge spider - several stories tall - they're retreating, but - I've created a force field around it, so it's frozen, but I can't make another force field, I'm too tired, I can't kill it - someone needs to come and help me, I can open up a tiny hole in the force field and they can go inside and kill it - please hurry, I can't keep up a force field this large for much longer, I'm coughing up blood already, I'll die -

You've got to be insane if you think I would let Briar get anywhere near that thing. But I'll send your message out to everyone else.

Cyrus did exactly what he said, taking out the 'Briar' part of the message. In essence: the Spider wanted to mate with James, so come chop at it now before something really regrettable happens!

Cyrus also realized two things: 1) The Spider had stopped chasing him, and 2) The Spider had stopped chasing him because he had started to eat the other guy.

Cyrus tried really hard not to throw up.

He did not succeed.

Six hours later...

-CYRUS’S ROOM- to -CAFETERIA-

Image

Cyrus

The battle that had started at roughly 5 AM had taken nearly three hours, not even including the stray Spiders that people found lurking in empty classrooms and bathroom stalls for hours afterwards. It was like the worst kind of infestation. Cyrus had been saved only because that one Spider had stopped to eat the other guy, and after that a psychic with telekinesis had saved his sorry ass.

The enemies had dispersed, but that didn’t mean the battle was entirely over. There were a handful of psychics with healing capabilities, and they were constantly dragged from one place to the next, taking care of that broken bone, those lacerations. It was incredibly useful, but even the healers couldn’t take care of the most common injury: exhaustion from over-use of psychic abilities. Healers could only heal physical injuries.

Fortunately, the Spiders had never made it up the 23rd floor. Unfortunately, Spiders caused property damage everywhere they went, and those 23 floors looked appropriately like a war zone. 23 virtually unusable floors, full of sparking electrical wires and broken glass and doors threatening to fall down on people.

Cyrus spent the first few hours after the battle doing everything he could, which was mostly sending out requests for healers and people that were trapped underneath rubble. Finally, at around 2 in the afternoon, things started to calm down. All the sick/injured people had been put in several classrooms on the 25th floor (it was too exhausting to drag them up much higher than that.)

Since there wasn’t much else for him to do, Cyrus returned to his room. He washed his face. He sat on his bed. He thought faintly of sleep, but just then a knock came on his door. Cyrus recognized the knock from its urgency.

“Come in, Briar.”

Briar looked sheepish, which was a strange look on Briar. “I wasn’t sure if you were sleeping,” he said. “Are you sure you’re okay, bro? You used your powers so much today.”

“I’m fine, but I was about to sleep. What did you want to talk about?”

“Well
” Briar looked down at the ground. “Some of the three stars were saying that they wanted to send out a broadcast to the other three stars, but the comm system is broken 'cause of the attack
we were going to meet in classroom 55E14.”

So, a classroom on the 55th floor, in the East wing, classroom 14. If they’re having their meeting place so high up, then they really must think they’re already above everybody

“That shit? No, Briar. I’m too tired. People aren’t going to really organize using that star system, are they?” He looked seriously at Briar. “If today taught you anything, it should have taught you how arbitrary that system is.”

“I know it’s arbitrary,” said Briar with a quiet voice. “If it made any sense, bro, then you would be a three star, and I would be a one star.”

Cyrus wasn’t sure what to say to that.

“I thought you might say no. I told them that. I mean, you already used your powers so much today. And we did a good job of spreading the news already. I kind of wanted to ask you
if you were in that meeting, what would you say?”

“I would say that we shouldn’t be holding a three star meeting.”

“No, I mean,” Briar frowned. “If you had to suggest stuff, what would you suggest?”

Cyrus leaned back against the wall. “We need a list,” he said at last. “Not a list of people’s stars. We need a list of names and abilities. But not just psychic abilities. Yeah, we’re going to need to know people’s abilities in order to organize them into a fighting force during an attack. But what are we going to do in-between? We have a cafeteria full of stored food – who’s going to serve it? What do we do when we run out of food? I’m sure we can go out and get more in the city, but who’s going to do that? How are we going to share it? And there are other things, too. It’s great that we have healers, but what if someone here has experience in medical school? That would be even better – healers wouldn’t have to waste strength on minor injuries. We need to use everyone’s talents, psychic and otherwise.

But those are just long-term concerns. In the short-term
what are we going to do with the Spider bodies? We probably need to drag them outside and burn them. That would be you, Briar.”

“There are also human bodies,” said Briar.

Oh, shit. How could I not think of that? Briar having to burn

“There are,” admitted Cyrus awkwardly.

“Good advice, bro!” said Briar, his face changing to the raw enthusiasm that looked more natural on him. “I’m definitely going to suggest that to them!” And he was gone before Cyrus could say another word.

I wonder, mused Cyrus to himself, if the next time the three stars make a request of me, they’re not going to be asking.

Cyrus looked somewhat longingly at the pillow on his bed. As long as he had this pulsing headache, he wasn’t going to be able to sleep. He had a stash of Tylenol, but he couldn’t take it on an empty stomach, and he hadn’t eaten anything all day. Cyrus didn’t particularly want to eat anything
he could still see the Spider tearing flesh from the bones of that poor kid
but Cyrus was also willing to do anything that brought him one step closer to sleep.

Cyrus walked to the cafeteria on the 30th floor. Many of the elevators were now out, having been the site of conflict for psychics versus Spiders. A few other people were also pilfering food from the cafeteria. Cyrus grabbed a bag of chips, a soda, and an apple. It was no three-course meal, but it was enough for him to take some pain medication and get the hell to sleep. He sat a table by himself, chewing despondently on his apple.

Briar sat at a desk in the classroom designated as the meeting place for the three stars. A few three stars had already shown up, but it was nowhere near the crowd he would have thought. I hope they all got the message
Briar agreed with Cyrus that the star system was arbitrary, but he didn’t necessarily think that it made it useless. Someone had to step up and organize stuff, and it might as well be the three stars.

They had agreed to meet at 3. Which seemed appropriate, now that Briar thought about it. Briar looked at the round clock on the wall. 2:55

Wednesday

Wednesday groaned. She hurt like hell. The last thing she could remember was watching the gigantic Spider go down, finally. She had released the force field, and promptly turned to laugh and point at the ridiculous dancing boy. Then she had fainted mid-laugh.

Wednesday sat up. She was in a classroom transformed into a sick bay, with the desks cleared out and lines and lines of unconscious people laid down on blankets. Healers ran back and forth with first aid kits.

“Hey,” called out Wednesday, her voice weak at first. She coughed and tried again. “Hey, I need help over here! I hurt like hell. Can’t one of you people do something about that?”

Luke was in a word completely worn out, freezing an entire hallway and then the few spiders he faced, and the legs of the giant spider. He wasn't exactly invicible. Though at the message of going up to the 55 floor just for a meeting. He sighed pushing himself out of his own bed. "I hate it here already.." He mumbled off to himself and made his way up the the classroom where the meeting was suppose to be held.

Once reaching the place he found a seat in the back, he didn't feel like having to be up front; no this gave him a chance to pass out and act like he was listening. Then again, he needed to stay awake; he was one of the three stars; he had to pay attention. He groaned alittle trying to get comfortable in his seat, looking to the little white haired boy. "So, what exactly is this meeting for, I'm sure all of us are exhausted, couldn't this have waited another hour or so?" He asked curiously, he wasn't really complaining, but he wanted to get that out of the way just in case someone else was going to get all angry and start snapping off something along the lines of that.

James had thrown his spider arms to the side somewhere in his room and had nothing left to do. He'd already dragged as many I-beams as he was willing, already swept up a fair portion of his side of the school, and had already taken a hatchet to a few spiders, Who came to school with a hatchet?, once someone had mentioned that they could eat the corpses in case there wasn't enough food. Still, the menial labour could only hold his interest for so long and once it was done he bummed a cigarette of a kid that was running around healing people,

"I can fix the damage it does."

Was the explanation he'd given when he passed it off to James. James sat there, enjoying the Pall Mall for a few minutes and then throwing it out of the window when he'd finished it. He had a few more somewhere in his bedroom, he should've gotten those instead of asking someone for them. He wandered the halls for a little while, stopping and turning back whenever he came across a clog of spider corpses someone'd chopped up. "Hey, all three stars should go up to room fourteen on the east wing, floor fifty-five."

"What?" James asked the kid, who was clearly out of breath and sweating.

"Are you a three star?"

"...Yes." James answered after a moment of hesitation.

"Then you have to go to floor fifty-five and room fourteen on the east wing."

"Will do." James answered, tasting the belief around the boy. The kid then ran off, and left the sound of slapping sneakers behind him. "Well then. I know where I'm going."

Briar

Briar was starting to feel overwhelmed and confused again. He listened to Sarah's speech and found himself nodding along. What she was saying sounded similar to what Cyrus had been saying, so it must be good, right? After she was done, Briar stood and recited almost word for word what Cyrus had said about collecting information about people's skills and abilities (both psychic and otherwise). He punctuated his speech with a lot of fist bumps and "We can do it, guys!" Then he sat down, feeling very satisfied.

Behind him, the other three stars twittered amongst themselves. Finally one girl stood and pointed a finger at Ruby. "If we're going to collect information, then we should also collection information on stars! I mean, this is supposed to be a three star meeting, but there's obviously an impostor here! And who knows who else in this room is actually a three star?!"

A second girl stood up. "You're being ridiculous! What are you going to do, strip search everyone?!"

"If we have to," said the first girl.

"Oh, great," said Wednesday, scowling at Tyli. Jimmy was on the blanket next to her. "Here I am, practically dying, the savior of this whole damn building, but you'd rather flirt with the naked ninja wannabe." She waved her hand as if shooing away a fly. "Oh, but please don't mind me. Do carry on. I can see we have our priorities here, and naked men will always come first, won't they?"

Briar

"I think that sounds like a good idea!" said Briar to Sarah. "I'm definitely a three star -" Completely unsolicited, Briar took off his shirt. He tried to point to the three stars on his back, but instead he ended up spinning back and forth like a dog chasing its own tail. "See, you guys?! See?! I have three stars! Look, they're all lined up and stuff!" Briar put his shirt back on. "So I can definitely run around and ask people's information! What sort of thing should we keep it on? Oh, I know! A laptop! I have a laptop! Well, actually I don't have a laptop, but Cyrus has a laptop, so that's like if I had a laptop, basically..."

Yay, thought Briar enthusiastically, I have an important job!

It sounded like most people didn't want to do the star system. Briar thought that was probably a good idea. "Hey, I know," he suggested. "If we're not going to organize according to the star system, we still need a leader and stuff, right?

How about we have an election?"

Cyrus

Walkie-talkie, huh? Something about the label irked Cyrus, but it could also have been his headache making him crabby. He had to admit - it was a pretty accurate depiction. He took the young man's hand and shook it.

"I'm glad you found it helpful," said Cyrus, withdrawing his hand. "I'm going to need to build a better endurance, though. The ability to break things apart, huh? That sounds pretty useful. I'm a one star, too." Cyrus pointed to the one star on his hand. "I get a feeling that we one stars are going to need to stick forever. If the star system works out, we're going to be at the very bottom of the totem pole."

Wednesday

"Oh, yeah. Just ignore for the handsome ninja man! I get it. It's cool. Like I said, it's not like I saved everyone today or anything -"

Wednesday got up, which probably should have been impossible given how much she was complaining about her "pain".

"It seems like the only way I'm going to get any attention is to find your stupid Nin...Nin...hak...thing." She looked Jimmy up and down. "As for who undressed you...I'm going to guess the suspect list can be narrowed down to the people with breasts. Or, perhaps, people otherwise inclined."

Next, Wednesday looked Ran up and down. "For Wednesday's sake, woman." Wednesday had no better God than herself. "Put on some clothes."

When Sarah came up t him telling him he shouldn't be eating alone he smiled. "I know, but i felt like having sometime to myself. I doubt I'll get much if I become one of the leading three stars." He said still playing with his food. "Don't worry about me, I've been alone for sometime, this won't hinder me in the slightest.." He offered a smile, taking a single bite from his food, and then standing up and walking off with the tray.

He hopped he didn't seem rude to the girl, he just needed sometime alone. This was all happening to fast, and he really didn't know how to take this all in. He had been in bad situations before but that was eight years ago. He settled in on the stairs just continuing to munch at his food calmly. He felt no obligation to rush himself, nor to talk to anyone. He needed his time away from people; he enjoyed company that was a fact; but for now he needed to clear his own head, and find out what exactly he would need of himself before he could offer himself as a leader to these people.

"I don't think I would be a good leader," answered Cyrus to Jake. "But I do have opinions that I want heard. I guess it's kind of like...having a vote, you know? I don't want to see any more dead bodies either." He thought about the death of the boy behind him, and he fought the urge to shudder.

Suddenly, the same dead voice from before came over the loudspeaker. "Please congregate around television sets. We will be announcing the test results from this morning in a moment.

Cyrus stood, fighting the urge to look worried. He wasn't sure what the criteria for the grading was, but he sure as hell hadn't killed any spiders. But he had used his powers an awful lot, and they had proven to be useful. That ought to mean something, right?

"I guess we should find a television set," said Cyrus with a grimace.

Briar

Briar nodded along to Sarah's idea. As he left the room, he found himself face to face with the kid from earlier. That fancy Metsu kid who thought he was so cool, but really...he was not. That kid had definitely been eavesdropping! And then he just went and ignored Briar like Briar was dirt under his feet or something. Briar turned to yell something at the kid, but the intercomm interrupted him.

Briar headed to a nearby lounge, making sure to 'accidentally' push the annoying Metsu kid along the way.
