Personality

Jack Highwind rarely laughs, but he's a friendly and charming gentleman considering his young age, no doubt a result of his upbringing in Meridian. He's always polite, and also shows lots of curiousity when it comes to any of the many fields of science, arts or theology, that interests him. He's a very relaxed man, who never seems to get worked up - some would even go so far as to call him laidback, but he relishes at any challenge, be it physical or mental. He's good natured, but has been known to work for dubious, and outright evil people in his endless pursuit of glory, something that he values more than love, gold, power, and even his own life. Despite that, he's more than willing to help a person in need if asked. He speaks with a slight accent. Slightly prideful, as his title of "Captain", is self-proclaimed. Jack Highwind, however, is an explorer and adventurer in the true sense of the word, and only feels truly alive when he's soaring among the clouds.

Jack is a renaissance man who dabbles in everything from history to alchemy, astronomy, astrology, languages and even inventions. He also loves poetry, art and music, and strange inventions or magic that he doesn't understand tends to kickstart his curiosity. He has a special interest in elven artifacts. As a result of his interest in foreign cultures, he speaks several languages besides his own fluently. He's a passionate dreamer and romantic, who loves theatrics, and practices meditation to relax. As an air pirate, he worships Auron, Patron God of the Winds and Sky and the king of Sylphs.

Equipment

A saber with a grip shaped like the maws of a dragon, a pair of strange goggles, a dirk, several smoke bombs and other alchemical bottles, and a spy glass.

History

Captain Jackal "Jack" Highwind grew up in the free human city of Meridian, the son of a wealthy merchant turned politician. His father, wanting his son to receive the best education possible, sent him to study in one of the city's foremost libraries as a boy to study under very knowledgeable scholars. Jack, there, grew up studying a variety of subjects that he found extremely intriguing, such as alchemy, history, science, theology, military tactics and fencing, to only mention a few. The young boy made remarkable progress because of his interest and his attentive mind.

One of the scholars declared him a prodigy child, while another suggested to his father that the growing boy be sent to learn the mercantile trade. At the age of fifteen, Jack left Meridian on-board a human trading ship named the Batavian. It was a cursed voyage, however, and the ship sunk after being attacked by pirates. The young boy was taken prisoner by the pirates, and worked their ship until it docked at the island of Amaketsu, a troubled and lawless region, but one that would shape the young man greatly during his short stay there as a prisoner and crew member of the pirate ship. In time, he ran away from the pirates, and made his way on another seafaring vessel, to foreign lands, beginning his travels that would in time earn him his reputation as a sky pirate.

During his travels, he learned many skills, among them those of a sailor and of a martial artist. He became an explorer and an adventurer, as well as a sailor. Everything changed, however, after his twenty-first birthday, when the young sailor-adventurer, now first mate of a pirate vessel in the sea around Ashura, would first come in contact with the Hiranoh.

At some point, the captain of the vessel he sailed with agreed to take a group of Hiranoh dignitarires to Nijhon, on-board his ship. The Hiranoh, unaware of the captain's piracy tendencies, were to later be sold as slaves or ransomed back to their people, or the highest bidder. Jack Highwind, however, betrayed his captain, when he and a select few friends and allies from the crew, seeing the possibilities of befriending the mysterious Hiranoh, instead freed them, and seized the pirate ship for themselves in a mutiny, putting many of their comrades, and their captain, in chains.

Leaving the ship in the hands of the crew, and leaving with the Hiranoh when they docked in Nijhon, Jack Highwind became not only a bodyguard but a friend of the closed and secretive people, and escorted them through a land they knew nothing of, back to the safety of their air ships. This would be both to the benefit and undoing of Jack. It would spark a strong friendship between the young pirate and the Hiranoh, in time resulting in his acquisition of a beautiful sky ship amptly named the Batavian after the fateful ship he had once sailed on - but his rescue of the Hiranoh dignitaries would also lead to his embracing his new life as a renowned air pirate, while nurturing his trading relations with the mysterious Hiranoh.

Of course, as an air pirate, Jack made enemies with many powerful groups in the world. The Inquisition considered his strange flying contraption a work of black magic, and branded him a heretic, while the Sacred Order of Holy Knights and other groups and countries sought to punish him for his crimes as a pirate of the skies. In some cities, it was so bad that he could barely show his face without being arrested, though in most cities, many may had heard of his name, but few had actually seen his face.

Go where glory waits thee,
But while fame elates thee,
Oh! still remember me.
When the praise thou meetest
To thine ear is sweetest,

- Captain Jack Highwind, Infamous Air Pirate
