You know what has made me the happiest I've ever been? Seeing Aki graduate from Middle School. More than wanting them to be educated, I wanted him to be nice person. To see that he has become both is just a wonderful thing.

The whole quad full of middle school parents bustled with energy for the upcoming celebration. The quad was alive with colorful streamers hung from trees planted around the school. A bridge of red, white, and blue balloons floated above empty chairs on the stage. Dead center in front, Grey clung onto the camera taking pictures of the celebration like a doting mother unable to constrain her excitement for her childs accomplishments.

Their Grandparents sat beside him on lawn chairs, too old to stand in this hot weather. They wore light clothing and stylish hair accessories that matched in color. Gramps wore a red flat hat to hide his shameful bald spot. Granny on the other hand had a red bow tied at the top of her head, her silver short cut hair curled into her face. The two of them looked like a couple you only saw in post cards for valentines day. One day, Grey hoped to have a long lasting relationship like that; someone who lets him have total freedom to be himself - and especially to feel. Or, not feel. Whatever he happens to be feeling at the moment is fine with them. That's what real love amounts to - letting a person be what he really is.

He shrunk down to their level, crouching and holding the camera out from them. He grinned.

"Smile!" the split second before Grey hit the button for their selfie, the old couple stuck their tongues out with bulging eyes. The three of them burst into laughter when Grey showed them the picture, pointing at Gramps eyesfilled with a level of wildness. As Grey turned to the left to face his girlfriend, he heard Granny Shingo tell Gramps how darling he looked in the picture and the nuzzle of their kisses.

Image

"Babe, come take a picture with us!" said Grey. She blinked and looked at him, tilting her head in that unresistable cute way.

"Huh?"

"Take a picture with us. Were you listening?" Grey raised an eyebrow. He could tell her smile was forced.

"Sorry, I am just tired." she replied.

"Don't lie. Something's up, right?" he pushed her excuse. His girlfriend was hardly the quiet type, clinging onto him and batting her eyelashes for his attention was her usual demeanor. At this moment, she sat with enough space between them that a guy as big as Grey could sit there. She shook her head.

"No, really, I am just tired." She reached over, putting her hands over Greys that held the camera, "Lets take a picture, ok?" she crawled onto his lap, snatching the camera from his hands and beaming with a fake expression like sculptured wax unable to reach the appeal of human emotions.

He smiled anyway when she snapped the picture, nuzzling into his neck she handed the camera back to him. All worries were gone. He chuckled rather bashfully and cradled her in his arms. The feel of her soft and tiny body against his made him feel whole. Holding her made him feel useful and like he was needed in this world for more than fates pawn in the game of LIFE.

Graduation music blasted suddenly as all the students filed out into two lines, one on each side of the stage. The principal gave his incredulous speech. Grey thought itd never end and was only bearable because of his girlfriends affectionate pecks around his neck. His cheeks heated.

"Hey, lets save it for later ok?" Grey whispered into her ear, his lips brushing her earlobe. She whined and it made him want to kiss her more. He nodded off to Gramps and Granny."Its a little much in front of them, plus, Aki is about to go on!" he shouted the last part-a sparkle illuminating in his eyes. She huffed, but Grey ignored it, too distracted by Aki's name being called onto stage to grab his diploma.

He was dressed in a black cap and gown, walking out onto the stage Grey helped his girlfriend off his lap and shot up. Picture after picture he took of Aki, waving to him and hollering. Granny and Gramps joined him. It was cute to see them doing their best to yell and clap for their grandson. Everyone was happy. Except his girlfriend.

We don't have to be ordinary
Make your best mistakes
'Cause we don't have the time to be sorry
So baby be the life of the party
I'm telling you, to take your shot it might be scary
Hearts are gonna break
'Cause we don't have the time to be sorry
So baby be the life of the party

The one best thing about Aki is that, his looks have never changed from five years ago. Sure his hair was shorter, but he still had that same style about him. The only difference with now and then was how Aki acted. After his father's death, he took the rebelliousness side of life for a while. Everyone in his family accepted it and understood it, but at least he kept his grades up and stayed in school. But the thing was, at night. Some nights Aki would just wake up and leave the house. It was times like these that he wouldn't be home for 2 or 3 days. Still he never missed out on turning in his school work, he just didn't go to school.

Recently though, just a week before graduation, Aki was escorted home by the police in the middle of the night on a weekend. His grandmother said nothing, but his grandfather was furious once he got the news as to why. It seemed Aki was ganged up on. A bunch of people witnessed him kick a bunch of Gang members asses. The reason for this was because they were picking on a little boy who reminded him of Grey, when he was younger. Aki didn't like it and stood up to it.

Thing was, he let them have the first hit. So now it's graduation and he still has a bruise on the corner of his mouth. It went down a lot, it was most of his cheek. But that was nothing compared to what he did to the gang members. The amazing thing about Aki was, he was always so tough and could manage things like that, even at a young age. his grandparents knew this when he accidentally broke a toy car with his hands. Something a child shouldn't be able to do without much effort.

And then there was his temper. Like always, that's something that only got worse over the years. But right now he was pissed. Having to wear this geed-up. Put him at all the wrong points. This wasn't his style one bit. He liked the punk rock look or just plain black clothes. This thing they made him wear now was ridiculous. He felt like a nun with a fancy square cap hat.

When time his name was called, just before going on stage, he noticed Grey's lousy good for nothing tramp stamp sitting on his lap. He wanted nothing more than to see her burn under the sun's ray of ridiculously hot light. Ugh, he felt like he was dying in this thing. Highly annoyed he ripped off his graduation outfit and threw it high up in the air.

"Finally this crap is over with! You know how long I've been dying to graduate from this lame school?!

The Headmaster gasped. "Mr. Shingo! Watch your tongue!"

"Oh you mean this one!" Aki stuck out his tongue and pulled down his bottom eyelid to give off a stink eye look. Like a child would. "I'm freaking done with this lame pace! HAPPY GRADUATION!" He smiled big at a Grey who was standing without his tramp stamp. Aki fixed his shirt and started to run off the stage. All at the same time of yelling at Grey to catch him in the air as he jumped off into Grey's direction. Wasn't like Aki was fat, in fact, he hardly weighed anything at all. So it was like catching a pillow or a small animal.

“When she left, it was like someone had ripped my heart out, crumbled it up like a flimsy piece of loose leaf paper and crammed it back into my chest. It somehow managed to work, but it would never, ever feel the same.”

Of course the graduation couldn’t have gone perfectly and allowed Grey to take a decent picture of Aki holding his diploma. It wasn’t a once in a life-time event or anything. NooOooo. He ran a hand along his jaw. Slightly agitated at the kid’s disobedient behavior towards the principal. Grey wasn’t the only one holding it in, Gramps eye was bugging out again with that scary twerk. Granny always laughed at things like this, even in this moment. He bet she was just as wild as Aki in her younger days.

When Aki ran out to Grey yelling for Grey to catch him, the anger vanished from his body. The sun cast a dark halo around Aki’s dark head and he had an impish grin on his face. Facing straight forward, Grey could see a discoloration on his precious brother’s face. It didn’t belong there. Grey remembered when Aki came home beat up – Gramps was furious at Aki, but Grey’s anger was focused somewhere else. The fucking bastards that did this. No one touched Aki. The amount of anger he felt was so strong that it sparked a ravaging heat wave in his chest that pushed itself out to his arms. That boy was his family and he protected him like wolves guarded their territory. That bruise on his face meant ten time’s worse for the culprits face. By the end, that gang didn’t have much of a face once Grey found them. He spent his free time around clubs, bars, any place that served alcohol or a gig. Finding the shitheads wasn’t difficult. Rumors flew fast, and Grey was a master of gossip.

Grey opened his arms getting ready to feel like he had caught nothing. This was the last straw for his girlfriend.
“Grey…I can’t do this. We are over. Sorry.” That split second his world came crashing down. It was so random. Out of nowhere. Grey blinked, uncertain, and turned his head towards her. He said nothing for a moment, just cocked an eyebrow with disdain. His arms remained wide open though.

“Where did that come from?” He wanted to question her further, but she had run off; disappearing within the crowd of ecstatic parents. His heart rapped against his ribcage. He stared off in the general direction of where she disappeared. What should he do? Every urge in his being called him after her. The one he had planned to marry had just walked away. Why? The ring was already bought, put up in a little ruby colored box that was tucked into a tux pocket. He was going to ask her to marry him next year once his music career picked up and he could provide for her. Why was this happening? He knew something had been wrong, why she didn’t she just tell him. What had he done to deserve this?

Why?

Gone for good and never coming back. Having the final thread be forcibly cut.

Image

Image
Aki hugged Grey's neck softly as he watched the witch walk away. He was hoping she'd never come back. Even though it hurt Grey with a thousand fold, this would be the only time Aki would ever let himself get so selfish. Grey was his. They were fated as children to be together. But Aki only realized this once Grey had gotten himself a girlfriend if you can even call her that. Aki had become jealous and started to lose Grey's time and attention. He wasn't use to that, not from Grey of all people. So Aki did what he normally did and stuck to Grey, but this time he did it ten times more, only showing her how much power he had. With a snap of his little fingers, he could pull Grey's attention away. Wasn't like she was good enough for him anyways. If she were good enough, Aki would have just kept to himself and accepted it.

Tangling his little fingers in Grey's hair, he finally looked up at him. The look on his face pained Aki to see it. There wasn't anything he could do, or wanted to do. Wasn't like he was going to get up and drag her back. Hell no. Biting his lip softly, he pressed his forehead against Greys, closing his eyes he stayed there like that.

"Your look pains me. What happened? Did I do something you did like? I'm sorry." His long black eyelashes fluttered open, reviling his brightly lit blue eyes. They were the color of sapphire in the sunlight. Especially if it was bright enough. Softly he rubbed his nose against Greys and hugged him tightly. "Grey..." He whispered his friends name softly, trying to soothe him.

“My heart cannot find rest while you are gone. Everything has lost its color since you are not here, I miss you, in short I just feel I am nothing without you.”

He was going after her. But the moment his feet began to lift off the ground Aki slammed into him, wrapping his arms around Grey’s neck. The longer he stood here, the farther away he was from getting her back. Was she even still on the campus? Aki tangled his fingers in Grey’s hair, tangling Grey in that same spot with non-existent spindled webs. But they felt real. Leaning forward, Aki's forehead landed against Greys and he felt the blood drain from his face. His warm breath danced along Grey’s cheek when he spoke. Grey's face felt like it was on fire. His skin felt hot and cold, his insides burned with fire and ice. He was going to vomit if his girlfriend wasn’t back at his side. That was what the choking feeling was in the back of his throat.

"Your look pains me. What happened? Did I do something you didn’t like? I'm sorry." Each time Aki batted his eyelashes, time ticked by. Time Grey could be running after the woman of his dreams.

Grey whispered, swallowing thickly, “I'm ok…”

Softly, Aki rubbed his nose against Greys and hugged him tightly. Trapping him here. "Grey..." He whispered his friends name softly. Grey’s jaw tensed. Aki wasn’t the one he wanted to hear whisper his name like that. Today was Aki's day, but he couldn't lose her. She made him feel happy and important. For a brief second, his mask cracked and pain contorted his features. His hands lifted up and tore Aki apart from him in one smooth motion.

"I'm sorry." his voice was dark, swirling with regret. And then he was gone. Picking up his pace through the crowd till he was almost running.

Walking away from the one you love is stupid. Why do it? It only causes troubles for other people.

Image

Image
Aki smiled at Grey once he was placed down on the ground. Waving his fingers a little as he ran off. Once Grey was out of sight Aki's expression fell. If Grey wanted to get hurt more that's his choice. But Aki hated it when other people hurt his friend, it was ok if he did it, but not others. It was like letting someone hit your own dog or break your stuff. Ah, but it was at that moment as he watched Grey run off that Aki chose to give up himself. He'd never tell his friend how he felt, he'd never bring it up to him.

Turning on his heel he bounced on them. "Can we go home now? I'm kind of hungry and Grey seems busy." Speaking to his grandparents with a smile. The two exchanged looks and agreed.

The car ride felt long. His gramps turned on old timers music and his gran was singing to every note. Playing his cheek in the palm of his hand as his elbow rested on the door armrest. He watched the two interact. And then, just like that, he felt a strange pit happen in his chest. Everyone was moving forward and he was stuck where he was. Was this his life? Being left behind by everyone? His brows frowned as he got lost in thought, now staring out the window.
~~~
Akira, you bee a good kid and listen to your Grandparents. Don't cause them trouble. They're all you got." His father brushed Aki off his arm and ignored his crying face. "Don't be like that. You're being troublesome. Now let go!" He yelled at Aki and grabbed him by his arms. "Stop crying already I can't stand it."
"Shingi Shingo! You let go of him right now!" Gran whacked him on the head with her wooden spoon that she was cooking with.
He licked his tongue and shoved Aki away as he got back up and walked out of the house.
"Jeez, he never learns." Gran sighed and bent down to Aki's level, patting him on the head. "There Aki-Chan. Daddy didn't mean it. He really does care for you. That's why he brought you here. So you could be taken care of. It'll be ok."
~~~
Aki gridded his teeth once a flashback of the past rushed the to surface. With a loud bang, his fist slammed down on the armrest. It caused his Gramps to stop the car and ask Aki if he was ok. But once the car was stopped, he got out and slammed the door yelling he'll be back later.

A man's true character comes out when he's drunk.

Image

Image

After Grey had run off, he'd managed to catch up to his ex and talk to her. Afraid of drawing too much attention they drove out somewhere private to talk things over. Hours went by before his ex got fed up with his 'harrasment' she called it. The two of them were over.

It didn't work out, and that's why he's been at this bar for the past five hours drinking the strongest shots they have - some fucking swan or geese vodka, he doesn't know the name. And he doesn't give a fuck. All he wants is to forget. He's going to drink until his internal organs start a revolution and leave. Each bitter shot that burns down his throat brings up the rank bullshit she told him and one step toward the internal organs revolution. Shot one.

This relationship thing hasn't been as much fun as I thought it would be.

Had he just been a game to her? Shot two.

I can't put up with your crap anymore.

Grey had to work and care for Aki and their Grand parents. Being with her and texting her 24/7 was impossible. He rubbed his temples. The world wasn't blurry enough. Shot three.

Look, I loved you. Past tense.

When had it stopped? A few minutes before she said those things she was cuddling in his lap. Soft kisses had ran down his neck. Why did she do that?

A pounding headache rang a warning of his next bodily reaction. Instantly, the room went black. A cocoon of darkness enveloped him. He didn't how long he was out, but the shatter of the shot glass suddenly crashing into the floor flicked the lights back on. He tried to stare at his feet. He could barely see his feet. And that annoying high voice from his ex wouldn't go away.

You are always so selfish doing your own little things and being in your own world. Everyone else is above me! You might as well be dating Aki!

He pressed the palm of his hand into his temple. What had he said after that?

But I have bonus points. I do, right? Bonus points from the lake and our song? Did I get any from taking you to two weeks at disney land with me, just us?

He wanted the conversatio to stop replaying.

You have a lot of bonus points, but you've lost them by now.

How little did he mean to her?

Why are we talking?

His face dropped into his hands. No one could see the tears coming out of his eyes.

--------

At 3am in the morning Grey managed to make it into the household. The bartender had been kind enough to drop him off after work. Getting into the house was Greys personal problem, so the bartender said. Nearly falling over and face planting, he caught himself on the wall near the door. He came to a complete stop, nearly hidden in the shadows. Where was his room again?

His hazel green eyes glazed over the living room. Nothing registered. Tears begun to sting the edge of his eyes again as he took a step forward, and tripped. Falling onto his side, he curled into a ball unable to hold it in any longer. She was really gone. And he was screaming. It was a scream so raw, and so broken.

"If it isn't Akira! Whatcha doing here? We thought you had graduation!" One of the gang members that Aki has been seeing always did have a loud voice. So everything he says almost sounds like yelling, except for when he whispers which sounds like a normal indoor voice. He was bald and buff, with black tattoos here and there and pierced ears. He was the type to wear sunglasses everywhere.

"I already had it, how long do you think they last for?"

"He's probably the only one here who does know! Haha, but I doubt he remembers." A blonde with a black beanie hat, spoke up as he lifted himself from a worn out couch in the club room they all built up in an abandoned wear house.

"Where's Kuro? Is he here?" Aki looked around and noticed only the two were around. It kind of made him feels a bit bummed out.

"The boss is doing his daily runs. He should be back soon. Are you hungry Akira? We could get something like pizza." The blonde, Richy said pulling out his phone making the call anyways.

Aki giggled and sat down in the bald guy's lap. He was so small he rested perfectly like an egg in a nest on his lap. Looking up at him with his head bent back he poked his chin. "Say Choogo, how old are you?"

He started to laugh his roaring laugh and hugged Aki as softly as he could. "I'm not as old as you think. I'm only 30."

This surprised Aki a bit, he thought the guy was nearly 40. He had a deep voice and looked like Van D(a guy from Fast and the furious movie) almost. Except he was a bit darker and had tattoos. Their night went easy, it was mostly chilling and talking, Aki even dozed off a bit in Choogo's arms. In the end Kuro never did show up, he ended up calling in saying he'd be in tomorrow. So the boys went home after dropping Aki off.

He hadn't realized how late...early it was until he reached home and saw the clock. It was almost 4 when he had gotten him. Turning on the lights, he hung up his over shirt and peeked around the room to make sure his Grandparents weren't up. No sign, but he did to his surprise find a Grey curled up in a ball in the living room entryway.

Turning the lights back off he knelt down, trying to be quiet. "Grey-Chan, wake up. We'll get caught if you don't hurry to bed." Aki started to pull him up slowly, but catches his foot on Grey's jacket and falls right on top of him. His knee hitting the floor a bit too hard. "Ouch..."

Every human walks around with a certain kind of sadness. They may not wear it on their sleeves, but it's there if you look deep.

Image

Suddenly, there were footsteps coming towards him. It was a quiet shuffle, the specific way Aki walked. Grey lifted his head up to check if it was him. He prayed it wasn't. To his surprise, a familiar figure stilled above him. Instantly Grey returned into his shell. It was Aki. Fuck. Grey didn't want him to see him this way. Ever since Grey joined the Shingo family, he became the man of the house-and the man of the house wasn't suppose to be as weak as he was acting now. It was his job to be everyones rock; to take care of everyone through sickness and health. And usually he hid this side of him well under a mask or in a bar where Aki nor his Grandparents would see.

Aki's voice was soft, calling out to him and he smelt like Vanilla. All of it felt so tempting so crumple into. Aki was telling him to get up before they were seen, but Grey just didn't care anymore. Nothing mattered without her. He was weak without her. When he was with her, everything and anything fell to the wayside. Whenever she walked into a room, it was like flipping a lightswitch on. He could write a thousand lines of why being with her felt like home. Now that she was gone, he felt homeless. That was the only way he could explain it. He curled up tighter into a ball, pulling his arm away from Aki. A gasp sounded from close behind, and then a hard body crashed into Grey. He was surrounded by a sweet warmth.

"Ouch," said Aki.Had he hurt him? By instinct, his hand reached out to cusp the back of Akis neck against Grey's will. For a moment, he was back to himself. He didn't know what part of him was so foolish to treat Aki so cruelly, but it had been winning. His voice still rough, he tried to talk and make up for it. Aki loomed above him. His breath ragged against his cheek.

"Are you ok?" Grey's voice sounded like a pitiful haze. If you looked closely, trails of tears stained his cheeks and red surrounded his eyes from crying heavily. Grey shifted, moving his hands from Akis neck to his cheeks. Grey should have told Aki to leave then, but the moment Grey touched his warm cheeks he couldn't move. Something called out to Grey, a deep pit of lonliness that wanted to be filled. Carefully, his fingers smoothed over Aki's face. Fresh tears rushed down his cheeks.

"Please." his voice cracked. Letting out a shaky breath, he held back the verbal sounds of his injured heart. His gaze searched Aki's. His friends eyes were still that same intense, blue eyes Grey saw at the graduation. The same eyes he rejected to go after his ex. The one who made Grey smile when he says his name with such joy. No one can ever say it the same. "Forgive me," he said softly, "Forgive me" he barely croaked out and pulled Aki into his chest, burying his face into Aki's hair.
