The year was 2012, an August morning like any other Monday. People shuffled off to work, people let their dogs out to shit, children trundled off to school. People first noticed the temperature increase - thirty degrees in an hour then the heat, lightning, then nothing; reports were sketchy; a terrorist attack, aliens, an electromagnetic pulse. Speculation due to the communication break was rampant. Even if Washington was still around no one knew it. If you lived in DC, the rest of the country might as well been on the other side of the globe.
We know that within the first hour society, what we call civilization dissolved. Some looted, some prayed and some simply gave up and lay in the streets; waiting to die. The first week weeded those that grew soft from twenty-first century opulence away from the rest of the species. Estimates were over a million were dead; hospitals became just buildings to steal drugs as the police element was non-existent. Without orders, the military presence in every city became a standing militia; shoot-to-kill orders were issued by heads of bases for those that would try to breech their gates. These became pockets of society still clinging to hope.
Eleven days passed, and what was once important to our society faded to something more primal. It no longer mattered what college you went to or if you were part of a sub-committee for housing. The strong survived and the weak were harvested for resources. It was around this time when the first nuclear reactors started to meltdown. Without those maintenance workers the cores dried and cracked. Thousands more died, as pockets of radiation hung thick in the air.
It's hard to pinpoint when these things were thrown into the mix, suddenly it was no longer strong versus weak but a survival for the human race. I'm not sure if we have it in us to beat this it took a month to destroy what took three thousand years to create.
Personally, I'd say we’re fucked.
Time-Line
1990–1998:
Rise of global terrorism on an unprecedented scale. Political violence funded by organized crime syndicate called HAVOC—The Hijack, Assassination, and Violent Opposition Consortium.
1998–2003:
The governments of many small and impoverished nations fall into the hands of HAVOC. International terrorists receive arms, training, and shelter in these "Badlands".
2003–2008:
Raids on oil and gas installations, assassinations, and the kidnapping of prominent world statesmen become commonplace as HAVOC attempt to terrorize the civilized world into submission. Despite public outrage and growing international tension, the major powers steadfastly refuse to give in to HAVOC's demands.
2008:
President of the United States and General Secretary of Supreme Soviet both assassinated at emergency summit meeting. US, USSR, and major European nations create the World Defense League and declare war on HAVOC. The Badlands are invaded, key HAVOC bases destroyed, and thousands of HAVOC agents are captured.
2009:
HAVOC leaders imprisoned for life in "Deep Pens"—maximum security cells located deep underground—to prevent their escape or release by HAVOC agents still at large.
2010:
New leadership emerges to unify the scattered remnants of HAVOC and plan revenge.
2011:
A WDL train transporting seventeen 100-kiloton nuclear warheads, slated to be neutralized and dismantled, is attacked by HAVOC agents. The train is destroyed and its deadly cargo stolen.
2012 New Year's Day:
HAVOC hijack a WDL news satellite and broadcast a chilling ultimatum. They have planted the seventeen stolen warheads in major cities throughout the US, USSR, and Europe. They call for the immediate release of all HAVOC agents held in Deep Pens, plus the payment of $2 trillion in gold bullion, or they will trigger the warheads one by one until their demands are met in full. A twenty-four hour deadline is set. WDL leaders declare an emergency and request that the deadline be extended. HAVOC refuse.
January 2nd:
First warhead detonated at Brie Nuclear Energy Plant, ten miles south of Paris, France. Blast and radioactive fallout claim millions of lives. HAVOC repeat their demand and extend deadline by twenty-four hours.
January 3rd "The Flare":
World Defense League agents discover location of HAVOC command headquarters on an island in the South Pacific Ocean. Immediately orders are given to infiltrate and destroy the HQ and its occupants. The assault is swift and decisive; the complex is quickly overrun and its inhabitants are killed. Yet, ironically, as the news of this victory is being relayed around the world, HAVOC enact their ultimate revenge. A transmitter hidden on the island, fitted with a time-delay mechanism, clicks on, sending its high-frequency radio signal to a communications satellite orbiting the earth. This signal is amplified and returned to earth where, simultaneously, it triggers the remaining nuclear warheads. The initial explosions set off a disastrous chain reaction that feeds on civil and military nuclear installations all across the northern hemisphere.
Present Day - July 17th, 2015:
Gale force winds are sweeping across the world, carrying enormous amounts of dust into the upper atmosphere and preventing much sunlight from reaching the earth's surface. Temperatures have plummeted, deterring survivors from remaining above ground. Communications are disrupted by gamma radiation, making all radio, cable, and satellite contact impossible. Despite horrible conditions, small colonies of survivors develop in total isolation from one another during this time of darkness.
About
Simply put, Contamination is a realistic survival roleplay set in a modern world where terrorist have plunged the world into a second Dark Age. Characters must survive in a world recovering from nuclear war, in addition to: harsh climates, uninhabitable wastelands, lack of food/water, and hostile humans. More dangerous than anything though, are those that have been over-exposed to radiation thus transforming them into feral mutants. In the beginning, mutants will be savage creatures: they will not be open for playable races, they cannot infect our characters, and for now only one type of them exist. This makes sense and it will not be changed, unless the group decides so or sake of consistent realism demands it.
Plot will be basic, yet the facts will elude us in both OOC and IC. The reason being for this is to leave room for growth that area. Other than the information presented to setup the game and the chosen beginning scenario, storyline will be formed as we go, through cooperative storytelling. Post will be made in order (or not depending on what is decided) and each player is allowed to control the world and plot direction. Meaning, if you want to have a mutant horde attack our group or have a radio broadcast transmit a message about a nearby safe haven, then either option and more is available and encouraged during your post.
Cast size makes no difference to me, but I will require a bare minimal of 4 players before this can be started. Acceptable writing level and roleplay skill is open, however, there are standards I will hold everyone to as the roleplay has to be enjoyable for me and all involved. Characters should be average and ordinary, I will allow what makes sense and seems plausible. For instance, lets remove any notions of parkour experts, krav maga masters, or survivalist nuts. This doesn't mean they can't be prepared for the apocalypse via equipment or skills, just keep it within reason.
Using the provided character application is not a must, substituting your own or adding additional categories is acceptable. You can customize the sheet with your own coding, fonts, colors, pictures, and your characters information, obviously. While I do prefer pictures in the app, do try to make them a manageable size, but text descriptions are welcome as well. I also appreciate good use of coding because it makes for an easier read, plus it looks nice. This is why I advise everyone to use the application I provide. It brings organization to the sheet as well list all the info I request. I have said this before and I will say it again: be creative. There are too many options available for characters to be similar.
