The shadows were deep in the dark citadel that stood as the only structure in the desolation that was the Wastes. From the outside, it would be easy to assume the structure uninhabited, its windows dark, its ramparts empty, flagpoles standing lifeless and unrealised, it was only below, that the heart of the beast pulsed, giving the truth to the sleeping monster that was the Wyrdspire.

Deep within its darkened depths, the sounds of screams, pleas and cries of beasts unnatural in design would echo in the all but empty halls. Their cacophony muffled by the endless tunnels, and punctuated by the snarling, hacking demands of the creature that called the Wyrdspire home.
"Nemu! You worthless sack of flesh! Where are you?" Deep with one of many subterranean labs, the abomination know as Tzsarvin Sphex called for his assistant. His body may have once been something akin to human, but many unnatural centuries and foul magic warped science had reduced him to a monster. Arms and legs hung in a far too long gait, his pale, waxy skin drawn taught over his skelital features. An additional set of pale, sinewy arms emerged from back in a horrific mockery of wings, each one of his four arms possessed of disturbingly long fingered hands. His body was clad in a simple robe of black fabric and steel, various surgical, alchemical and arcane items hanging from his frame and even embedded in his flesh. His black, soulless eyes stared out over slitted nose and a mouth far too full of short, needle like teeth.
"Nemu!" it spat again, its voices a guttural, course hack.
"Yes, Master?" Came another voice, soft and sonorous, its gentle, if monotone resonance starkly opposing Sphex's own voice. From the shadows emerged another being, who similarly to Sphex, may have once been human. Nemu was the size and shape of a human, but the many drips, tubes and alchemical devices that infested her body, along with the blank stare with which she observed the world, leant a decidedly, inhuman aspect to the female creature.
"Worthless creation!" Sphex said, his hand striking Nemu with coinsiderable strength, hurling her back and into a wall with a sickening crunch. A blow that would have hindered a grown man immobile, seemed to not even phase the abominable woman, who lifelessly rose to her feet.
"You desired me, Master?" She continued, as if nothing had happened.
"I desired you, minutes ago! You imbecile! Did I give you permission to wander off?" He snarled, a clawed hand striking out and pressing the girl against the wall, his long fingers easily curling around her throat, choking the unlife from her. Various tubes and fluid resovoirs bubbled and spasmed as her body fought to regenerate and maintain her unnatural existence.
"No... Master... You... Told me... To... See to... That slave..." She managed to choke out, Sphex choking her for a second more before dropping her to the floor.
"And?" He said, leering down to where she leaned on the wall, regaining her breath.
"I... Observed him... until he left the perimiters of the-" Another blow from Sphex came across like a cannon, striking the side of Nemu's head with such force that there was an audible meaty crack as the vertibrae of her neck snapped and broke, her body striking the far wall before crumpling in a heap on the cold stone ground, unmoving.
"Now look what you have made me do." Sphex grumbled, stalking over the females unmoving body. He picked up the girls limp fram, turning it over so he cold observe her bruised, bloody features.
"My Spinal cord has been severed at the second and third vertebrae master, I am sorry for my weakness." She said, he lips moving and speaking, but her eyes as distant and unfocussed as ever.
"Your weakness did not cause this," Sphex spat, throwing the rag-doll Nemu over his shoulder and loping off down a nearby tunnel, "Your stupidity did. I desired you to kill him, not ensure he escaped."
"I am sorry master," Nemu replied, listless as she was carried away, "I will try and do better."
"You will do better, there is no try," He said, his voice a course rasp, "Now lets go find you a new spine, one a bit sturdier than the one you have."
"As you wish master."

The small, innocuous ship came into port at Jodan, its deck crewed by what appeared to be burly men, clad in rough burlap cloaks despite the hard work. Next to the helm, which was manned by a similarly cloaked giant, stood a smaller figure in much finer clothes, dark silks coating her oddly irregular form, a soft veil descending from her cowl so that only her mouth was visible.
The little boat was waved past the fleet that sat in the harbours defence, and it sidled into a small dock, the harbour master paid in full with a small bag of silver. All that was left on the ships registry was a curt X. The woman left the ship flanked by a quartet of the padding brutes, their features and bodies obscured by their burlap shawls, but even still it was clear that their form was no altogether normal. People in the street gave them a wide birth, two of the burlap giants walking ahead of the rest, shoving aside those who refused to, or hadnt noticed to move. They made their way slowly and inexorably towards the castle, and the trade summit that was to take place there, and the place her master had bade her come.

"Nemu, I will be needing you to travel to Khalidor," Sphex had said, as he adjusted the pincers, clamps and needles that protruded from the prone girls new, and still exposed, spinal column, "I have a task for you to complete there."
"What Master?" Nemu replied, oblivious or uncaring to the horrendous wound that lay open on her back.
"Did I instruct you to speak?" Sphex said, wrenching a pincer and causing her to release an agonised cry. She clenched her teeth and released a muffled whimper before responding.
"No... Master." She said, her voice as toneless as ever.
"I thought not," Sphex said, returning to his work, "There is a trade summit of the major nations occurring in a few weeks, I will require you to go and act as my representative."
"But master dont we-" Nemu started before suffering another agonising wrench for her insubordination, causing her to scream again.
"This spine is making you disobedient Nemu, correct that or I will test the nerve stimulants on you again."
"Yes... Master..." she panted through pain addled breaths.
"Now what were you going to say? You have permission to speak." Sphex said, returning to work.
"I thought we already possessed an Employer, Master." She asked, her arm muscles twitching as Sphex reconnected nerves and soldered muscles.
"We do, my pet, but we must maintain appearances, and besides, if this employer turns out to be less than useful, we may have need to find a more generous benefactor."
"Understood Master. What is it you desire of me?" Nemu said as Sphex began sealing the girls spine with fire and steel plates.
"I need you to make our presence felt. We are still open for business, and it is important that the world not forget about us. Once you are done, head to our employers base of operations for us. I will be awaiting you there with any resources I need."
"Yes Master, I will ensure the world does not forget you Master, your creations will march forth from the Wyrdspire once again."
"That they will, my pet. But before you leave, we will test your new spine and nervous system. Ready those you will take with you, then return to my chambers."
"Yes Master."

Nemu approached the gates of the castle in which the trade summit was taking place, her duel pairs of bodyguards in their dark cowls obscuring her and guarding her from prying eyes. The guards who stood at attention to their approach eyed them suspiciously, clearly unwilling to allow the darkly clad strangers entrance to a summit of royals.
"Beat it you lot, only royalty and their representatives are permitted access to the summit, take yourselves elsewhere." Their leader said, a burly man in a slightly more ostentatious version of the guards apparel.
"I am here representing my master." Nemu said, coming to a stop before the growing crowd of guards, her four mammoth attendants dwarfing even the largest of the cities watchmen.
"Oh yeah, and who would that be darling, your pimp?" One of them said, eliciting a scattered mutter of laughter amongst the group.
Nemu waited for the noise to die down before answering, her voice toneless, "I serve my master, Tsarvin Sphex, lord of the Wyrmspire and Master of the Wastes."
There was a collective paling of faces and mutters of disbelief, the name was a byword for terror and agony, her masters unnaturally long life allowing plenty of time for the cultivation of rumour, of myth, of nightmares.
"I am to believe the summit is open to all rulers? My Master is indisposed, and has sent me in his stead. I assume there is no problem with this?" Nemu said, oblivious to the effect she was having.
"How Do I know you're telling the truth?" The guardsman said, rattled but not shaken from his duty.
Nemu reached up and removed her cowl, causing a collected gasp of horror and a few gags of lost stomachs. Beneath her cowl, her face was its usual appearance, but above that, six, four inch long glass capsules stood in duel lines down her shaven skull. Each one was two inches in diameter, and contained a virulent green fluid with swirls of red blood, but it was what floated within each capsule that horrified the guards. Inside each glass container, floating in the green fluid, was a chunk of brain matter, connected up to various tubes and sinewy strands of organic matter that lead down into her skull. The horrific pieces of neuro-synaptic tissue twitching occasionally. A last minute addition to her body from Sphex, he had deemed that when working on her own, She would require the extra grey matter to assist in understanding and adapting to changing intellectual discussion.
He would remove it once she returned. The heightened mental capacity was not something she needed on a permanent bases.
"I trust this will suffice as proof of whom I serve?" Nemu said, her head cocking to the side.
"Ye-... uh, Yes, Yes, please, enter, the rest of the delegations have almost all arrived."
Nemu replaced her cowl, much to the thanks of the green city guard, "Thank you." Without another word she strode past the guards and into the castle, her accelerated brain capacity whirring as she took in the unnatural stimuli from her secondary brain segments, processing feelings and emotions she had not encountered in an age. She did not like it. She wished for the simplicity of her purpose, when there was only the master, only he that mattered. It was alright, he would relieve her of them once her task was complete. Maybe he would even reward her.
Against all of psycho-conditioning she had been subjected too, the influence of her secondary brains influenced her muscular movements.
She smiled.
Her movements were unimpeded as she and her cohort moved towards the hall where a mortified servant had told her the royal dignitaries were meeting, only being stopped in a chamber before the hall, where a number of palace guards tentatively stopped her. Once her own guards were given the order to remain outside, and she had been checked for any OBVIOUS signs of armament, she was permitted to enter.
The doors swung open and she was led in by man in fine robes who announced her arrival, as no doubt he had done all the dignitaries before him, "The uhh... The Lady Nemu, representing the interests of her master... Tsarvin Sphex..." He finished with a half terrified, half disgusted look upon his face. Sphex was a creature of nightmares, a monster children were warned of, some did not believe he even existed.
"Greetings, my lords and ladies," Nemu said, stepping forward with short, jerky steps, her elbows bent and hands clasped before her, stiff and artificial, "I am here so I may convey the will of my master." She bent and gave a jerky, stiff curtsey, which inadvertently pulled back her hood to reveal the grisly augmentation along her scalp, "It is a honour."

After the Prince and Princess of Cinnabar arrived, and began to speak among the others. Xiao Jingshen rose to begin her dance. Her heart racing at the prospect. Tenanye had confidence in her but regardless, she would do her best as she said. She moved to the front of the room. A few faeries following her, a lute player and a sitar player. As the music began to play,Xiao Jingshen began to sway softly to the music. Finally, when she began to sing, magic softly touching her words.
[i]” Feel us now, we are the stars
Feel us now, we are the sea
Feel us now as the magic flowing within your heart
We are the wind that kisses the trees

We come softly through the night
As evening falls behind us
Our footsteps leave no mark upon the snow
Let your spirit go, it will find us

We come adorned in spider web and dew
Through woodland to the meadow
We come luminous and bright
Dancing with the light and the shadow
The winter moon is calling us to play
A sacred light to guide us
The wild music leads us in a trance
Spinning to the dances inside us
The air is cold and echoes with the sound
Of laughter rising higher
With drums and bells, we sing into the night
Dancing in the light of the fire
We weave a music curiously pure
A crystal song suspended
We fly on wings diaphanous as light
Dancing till the long night is ended
We come ancient as the moon
As new as every season
We come as fire, as icicle, as leaf
Suspend your disbelief and your reason
Feel us now surrounding you
We are the wind that kisses the trees
Feel us now inside of you
A fairy heart that's guiding you home...”
Xiao Jingshen let the note linger on until finally bowing. She rose her head, hearing clapping and applause. She smiled bashfully, watching her sister’s proud gaze as she gave a simple nod that spoke volumes.
It was then the door opened and Xiao Jingshen froze hooded female appeared with the two fined robed men. "The uhh... The Lady Nemu, representing the interests of her master... Tsarvin Sphex..." Said the herald and Xiao Jingshen gasped. As the girl stepped forward, her movements odd and strange.
"Greetings, my lords and ladies," said the girl. "I am here so I may convey the will of my master." The girl bent, pulling back the hood she wore revealing a horrible disfigurement. "It is a honour." She said and Xiao Jingshen gasped. “By the Mother!” She rushed to her sister’s side, clinging to her while Tenanye held her tight, shushing her softly. Her sister looked to their host then at the girl. Xiao Jingshen hid her face for her fear. “Greetings, Lady Nemu,” She said, “You say, your master sent you? Tsarvin...? Who is that?” She asked, her tone even, and unwavering, though Xiao Jingshen could feel her sister body go completely still.

"Thank you for your kind words, Father. I hope that my people are content, it's all a King can truly wish for. An angry populace makes for uncertain times, something we could all do without." Arim responded as he and Aada spoke with Father Superior. Blue had high hopes for the Kingdom of Cinnabar.

Father Superior turned to acknowledge the King of Drake as he and the older magi approached. “May I present King Moloch Markus of Drake." Cyrus introduced Moloch. Father Superior looked upon the magi curiously. They had met once before a very long time ago. Neither party seemed to let on that they’d ever encountered one another before.

"It is a pleasure," Moloch greeted, his eyes seemingly favoring Princess Aada, though he took a moment to take the measure of King Arim. He bowed his head respectfully.

Blue bowed to the Drake King respectfully, “Your Majesty, it is an honor.” he said to Moloch. Blue could tell that the king of Drake City was taken by the Cinnabar Princess. He smiled kindly. “If you’ll excuse me please.” he said politely as he shifted to his pixie size in a blue flash. He bowed once more as he hovered in the air and then flew towards Zexen, Tenanye, Xiao, Valen and Arkaelus. Blue felt he had been human size long enough and wanted to return to what was more comfortable.

Image

Soon the door to the grand room opened up and another guest was about to be introduced. Father Superior could immediately feel a rush of darkness flood into the room. It was as if this cloaked person carried the energy of hell itself on their presence. He hadn’t felt this sort of dark energy in quite a long time, not since the before the Wastes were closed off to the rest of the world.

Zexen looked over toward the floating Blue Faery that hovered about shoulder height and asked, “Father Superior what’s wrong?”

Father Superior kept his eyes fixed on the figure and its entourage as he replied to Zexen. He materialized his wand into his hand and readied himself for the worst. “Dear child something VERY dark has come into our presence, hailing from a land long since closed off to the world.”

The Khalidoran man dressed in fine robes nervously announced the cloaked guest. "The uhh... The Lady Nemu, representing the interests of her master... Tsarvin Sphex..." He finished with a half terrified, half disgusted look upon his face.

Image

Valen’s face couldn’t avoid displaying the shock he felt in the pit of his stomach upon hearing the name Tsarvin Sphex. That was an entity that freaked even him out. The presence of a representative of Sphex meant that the Wastes were no longer in an isolated state. The world would once again see a new form of horror that it had long since almost forgotten. Valen hoped that the invitation sent to Tsarvin Sphex was in error. However at this point it mattered very little.

Zexen looked on curiously. “Isn’t Tsarvin Sphex some scary story adults tell children about to keep them from getting out of bed in the middle of the night and go wondering around? But that’s just a scary fable.” He said to blue.

Father Superior replied quickly with an unusual hit of nervousness in his voice. “Oh
dear you don’t know what you’re saying. Tsarvin Sphex is a scary reality that I had hoped the world had seen the last of. Unfortunately I was wrong.”

Zexen seemed a bit more concerned than he was previously. Realizing that the beautiful and talented Fae Xiao was still relatively close to this feared entity he grew protectively concerned. Zexen took a few steps forward in an effort to reach Xiao. He felt compelled to safeguard the young woman. After the cloaked figure made a few obscure movements toward Xiao she stopped and spoke.

"Greetings, my lords and ladies," said the lady presented as Nemu. "I am here so I may convey the will of my master." Nemu bent, pulling back the hood she wore revealing a horrible disfigurement. "It is a honour." She said.

Xiao Jingshen gasped. “By the Mother!” She rushed to her sister’s side, clinging to her while Tenanye held her tight, shushing her softly. Her sister looked to their host then at the girl. Xiao Jingshen hid her face for her fear. Zexen was relieved that Xiao got away from Nemu. However he honestly felt sick looking at the disgusting state of Nemu’s body. He tried to be tough and keep eyes on the tortured physical form that was Nemu but he could no longer manage it and averted his gaze.

“Greetings, Lady Nemu,” Tenanye said, “You say, your master sent you? Tsarvin...? Who is that?” She asked, her tone even, and unwavering.

Blue realized that the young Empress of Anansai had never before encountered the likes of Tsarvin Sphex. Blue remembered a time when the warring was strong in the Wastes and cries and prayers went up into the skies for days. The torment the souls there endured was immeasurable. The darkness enveloping those lands repelled any chance of the faeries to help. That realm was beyond salvation.

Valen stepped beside his son and the hovering pixie sized Father Superior and added on to Empress Tenanye’s inquiry. “And what intentions does your master wish for you to convey? What possibly would a representative of the Wastes desire to give and gain from a trade summit?”

"My Master is the Alchemancer, Tsarvin Sphex," Nemu said in response to the two faeries questions, "Due to historical embargoes on my Masters realm, we have shrunk from the eye of the other nations, but we are still very much... alive." Nemu strode towards the gathered nobles who stood in attendance, particuarly the small group of various Faeries, who fascinated her greatly. Sphex had procured few Fae specimens in her time, and each time coveted them as a rare resource, as were their magical items.
"My Masters reasons for sending myself to represent him, are the same as yours. We seek trade. As you may know, Father Superior, the land that my Master controls is of little agricultural worth, and as a result of this and said... embargoes, we have had to adapt to survive. But Merely surviving is something We would wish to move on from. Despite the Wastes lack of useable lands, there is much we have to trade." She looked around at the arrayed nobles, eyeing each carefully, "Assuming you are not as squeamish as your vassal, Queen Tenanye."
Her scan of the nobles complete, her gaze jerked back to the Fae, her mouth forming a mechanical approximation of a smile, "But such discussions should be held for the summit."

"My Master is the Alchemancer, Tsarvin Sphex," The creature spoke causing Xiao Jingshen to whimper. Tenanye hushed her softy "Due to historical embargoes on my Masters realm, we have shrunk from the eye of the other nations, but we are still very much... alive." she said approaching Tenanye and Blue, who floated nearby.
"My Masters reasons for sending myself to represent him, are the same as yours. We seek trade. But Merely surviving is something We would wish to move on from. Despite the Wastes lack of useable lands, there is much we have to trade." She said and Tenanye narrowed her eyes. There was something omnious about this creature, twisted and broken. "Assuming you are not as squeamish as your vassal, Queen Tenanye."
"Hardly." Was Tenanye's response.
"But such discussions should be held for the summit."

Xiao Jingshen rose up some, nearing Tenanye's ear. "She scares me, Meimei." She whispered, and Tenanye, never taking her cold eyes from Nemu.

"Be at peace, Little Sparrow, We are spiders." She told her. Her House saying, hoping to instill some family pride and strength to the girl. Severyn, seated beside Tenanye, eyed the creature as well. "Did your master, make you this way, Lady Nemu?" He asked, calmly but Tenanye could see the tension in his body. "Did you choose this?"

Severyn was always quick, and sometimes his intuition was frighteningly accurate. She didn't know how he came to this conclusion, perhaps the term "Master" but it was clear that Severyn was under the impression that this "Lady" was in fact, a slave of some fashion.

There was not much that surprised Moloch, but the appearance of this "Lady" from the Wastes threw him off balance. Even not taking her appearance in account, he felt something sinister in her very essence. Moloch resisted the urge to shiver. He was no true magi, but the dragonblood in his veins made him sensitive to certain things.

If Moloch was uncomfortable, Cyrus was furious. Moloch could see the old man practically shaking, his usual amused expression wiped away, replaced with a grim frown and eyes as hard as daggers made of dragonbone. Cyrus stood up to reach his full height and recited bitterly,

"Oh Avalon, Avalon! Land of lush meadows and crystal streams.
Who among the living remembers your bountiful yields,
The creatures in your heart,
Or the people you took to your bosom?
Oh, Avalon, Avalon!
If I cease to sing of your memory,
Let my right hand no longer remember its strength,
Or my mind heart, mine own children!"

The old man sighed and looked upon the woman with some pity. Yet his tone broke no argument as he spoke once again.

"What can your Master offer but blasphemy, distortion, and destruction?"

The feast had been going so well until the interruption of some pest. Sphex had sent his tool to dirty the grand palace. Arkaelus thought that the madman was supposed to meet with Dorian over the possibilities of a contract. That creature was a smart man, he wouldn't send his minion to make business in front of everyone. No it must have been to prove a point.

The other leaders were not at all happy to see the servant or for it to utter it's master's name. Even Moloch seemed surprised. Arkaelus was well aware of the monsters of the wastes, his grandfather had even bought some to clear out the native people attacking some of the colonies. Yet the wastes were far from Khalidor, but so close to Drake. Perhaps it was time to end this charade.

"Its master can offer us nothing." Arkaelus spoke calmly. "Sphex makes only weapons of war, tools of destruction for those desperate enough to use them. Begone monster and return to that wretch of man you serve!" He held is hand in the air, ready to signal the guards in the room to shoot Nemu. This, of course, was just a spectacle if anything.

"Believe me, you do not want to face an angry mob, Your Grace. One can be more dangerous than a hundred knights. May I present King Moloch Markus of Drake."

Arim turned his attention away from the Father Superior to the two men who had now joined them. One was an older man who carried the wisdom of his years about him, the other a much younger looking man, no doubt King Moloch. He felt Aada's hand tighten on his arm. The change was slight but noticeable enough. Don't mess up, it said, for the umpteenth time on their journey. Creator help her children with all her fretting. Aada's hand left his arm as she dipped in a curtsy. Arim inclined his head.

"It is a pleasure," Moloch greeted them.

"An honour, Your Majesty," he said as Moloch's eyes flickered over him and onto Aada.

"Your fire is most delightful," he said to Aada, "Though, I confess, I know little of Cinnabar."

Arim looked between his sister and Moloch. Surely she wouldn't...

Aada took a moment to look at Moloch. It was rare that someone paid attention to her when her brother was also in the room. Well, they certainly looked, but they saw an instrument, a means to end of getting into Arim's good books, or getting a woman in their bed. She was rarely their sole intention. And here was Moloch, King of a great nation, ignoring her brother and looking to her instead. She wasn't about to spurn him, no matter what her brother might think of the men at this place.

"Then I apparently have you at a disadvantage Your Majesty. Drake is a land that has held much of my curiosity since I was a child. The Circle of Magi particularly, though what we hear of The Circle in Cinnabar is little more than whispers."

Apparently she would, Arim thought. What happened to worrying about the men? Or was this different because Moloch was 'handsome'? It couldn't have been the power he wielded, Aada was a Crown Princess, she was yet to be seduced by power. Aada's intentions might have been innocent, but Arim was certain that Moloch's were not so innocent.

The doors swung open and a woman was lead in. "The uhh... The Lady Nemu, representing the interests of her master... Tsarvin Sphex..."

"Greetings, my lords and ladies," the woman, Lady Nemu, said, in a voice that sounded near unnatural. Combined with her jerking movements, there was something truly unsettling about the woman. "I am here so I may convey the will of my master." Nemu curtsied, or at least tried to, the motion pulling her hood from her head, revealing a grizzly addition to her scalp. "It is a honour."

Aada watched Nemu. There was something about the woman, a perverse darkness that Aada didn't trust. Apparently, neither did anyone else in the room. The Fae seemed the most unsettled. She reached for her brother's hand, the way she had done when they were children. Before her fingers could brush against Arim's hand, Aada dropped her hand away. He had been little use to her then, she doubted he'd be much better now.

Empress Tenanye was the first to speak to their new arrival. “Greetings, Lady Nemu,” Tenanye said, “You say, your master sent you? Tsarvin...? Who is that?”

“And what intentions does your master wish for you to convey? What possibly would a representative of the Wastes desire to give and gain from a trade summit?” Valen added.

Aada had heard stories of the Wastes. Dark, horrifying tales that 'young ladies shouldn't hear'. But that was all she dismissed them as. Mere fairy tales meant to scare children into being good and fanciful tales to pass among friends. It had never occurred to her that there might be some truth to those stories. Looking at Lady Nemu, evidently there was something deeply wrong happening there. She felt Arim's hand on her shoulder, pulling her back as he stepped forward to shield her. A stupid thing to do, since she was the stronger mage, but she wasn't about to start arguing about it now. A single look at his face told her that he could feel it too. Even though his magic was weaker than Aada's, he could feel the darkness that moved within her. And it scared him. Aada had seen Arim be many things; elated, shamed, desperate, content, grief-stricken; but never afraid, not like this. And that worried her more than anything.

"My Master is the Alchemancer, Tsarvin Sphex," Nemu said in response to the Faes' questions, "Due to historical embargoes on my Masters realm, we have shrunk from the eye of the other nations, but we are still very much... alive." Nemu began to move around the room. Arim forced himself to look back at her when she passed them. The closer she got to them, the more he could feel the wrongness of what she was, of what had created her. Aada felt nauseous from the sensation. As she moved, she kept going back to the Fae. Apparently, they were her main concern. Despite the Wastes lack of usable lands, there is much we have to trade." Nemu looked around the room, slowly taking in each of them. That was probably more unsettling than anything she had done thus far. Again, she looked back to the Fae. "Assuming you are not as squeamish as your vassal, Queen Tenanye." Nemu's scan of the room complete, her head jerked back to the Fae, her mouth forming a gross approximation of a smile,"But such discussions should be held for the summit."

A man with Tenanye continued questioning Lady Nemu. Aada turned to Arim, "Do you feel it, Arim?" she whispered.

He nodded. "Are you alright?"

"It's manageable."

"If you need to go-"

"I will let you know, Arim. I am not a delicate flower."

"Its master can offer us nothing." Arkaelus's voice rose across the room. "Sphex makes only weapons of war, tools of destruction for those desperate enough to use them. Begone monster and return to that wretch of man you serve!" Arim looked back to Nemu, seeing what the woman would do.

Nemu cocked her head at King Arkaelus, the man who had summoned them all there that day, her look inquisitive.
"My lord Arkaelus, it is true that my master is skilled in the creation of the tools of war, but they are far from his only skills. My master through the ages has discovered poultices and potions, elixirs and tonics that can heal the body, strengthen the mind and enhance the senses. War is not my masters goal, Lord Arkaelus, only enlightenment."
Nemu turned back to Tenanye and her entourage, and responded to the males question, his name not present in her memories, "In answer to your question, Faeling, my will is my masters will, what he desires, I desire. I serve him willingly, and my body his his to fashion."
She turned back to Arkaelus, whom still had is arms raised, ready to call down his guards should they be needed, "My lord, would you turn away those who come with the offer or peaceful trade, because of child-hood stories of monsters and demons?"
She turned and walked towards the door slowly, deliberately mocking the ensemble of lords and ladies, "Such actions are belittling of a king."

"We Fae would not be here. We are the creatures of childhood nightmare and dreams...we too come in peace, however." She said, her voice an eerie calm, like the static before a storm. "You should know this, if you intended any progress with your masters so called peaceful trade." She said, then shrugged,. "All the same, I believe you were asked to leave."

Nemu seemed uninterested in this but still moved to the door.

"All the same, I believe you were asked to leave."

Father Superior, Zexen and Valen watched the happening. Father Superior was surprised to see the empress resort to showing a portion of her true form however she was proving an important point. Zexen was beginning to feel a little bad. He knew that Nemu was not being given a fair chance. He wasn’t fond of her demeanor nor her appearance, nor tales of her malicious master but that didn’t mean she should be turned away unfairly. One of the guards, nervous and frightened by the happenings, accidentally pulled the trigger of his rifle causing the other riflemen to fire their rounds. Zexen yelled “STOP!!!” aloud.

Image

Father Superior quickly flew forward and pointed his blue wand at the bullets and a blue aura surrounded them. The bullets halted in the air and soon fell to the ground. He turned to look towards the riflemen with a heavy exhale. He held no faith in anything or anyone from the Wastes yet he knew right was right and that Nemu deserved to be treated fairly. Zexen was right.

Image

Zexen stepped forward as he said, “This is not the way.” Valen looked upon his son at a loss for words. The pixie sized Father Superior hovered not too far from the rifle bullets that lay upon the floor. Zexen walked towards Nemu and as he reach her he kneeled down before her. ”I believe that you have been mistreated. Even if no one else agrees to listen to your master’s propositions, I, as a representative of Valen Alus, will agree to hear you out. You have my word, although I cannot promise that we will reach an agreement.” He then turned to look upon the faces of all other rulers present after standing. ”I urge you all to follow suite. Although I am but a lowly ambassador and not a ruler, I beseech you to be fair to all present here. For is it not the general premise of our gathering and negotiations?”

Blue flew beside him and Nemu. ”The young fae is right. We should exhibit fairness at such a time. For there may come a day when we regret having not listened to each other when we had fair chance.”

Arkaelus listened to the others discuss on whether or not Nemu should be allowed to stay. The one that caught his attention was the Empress of Anansai, Tenanye. She had taken his side in not allowing Sphex's servant to treat with them. However, it was the way that she said it that mesmerized him the most. As she spoke, small, minor physical features began to change. From what began as an attractive elegant woman had transitioned into a striking figure. Arkaelus had never interacted with fae before so he had no clue whether it was normal to change or not.

His wonder on Tenanye was broken when the load thunder of gunshots rang through his ears. The guards had open fired on their target without orders, only for Father Superior to stop the bullets with his fae magic. Arkaelus glared at them, Dorian would need to teach them how to maintain upon his return. Zexen rose up to speak.

”I urge you all to follow suite. Although I am but a lowly ambassador and not a ruler, I beseech you to be fair to all present here. For is it not the general premise of our gathering and negotiations?” Then Superior chimed in with agreement. Half the table wanted her to leave, while the other half wanted her to stay. Arkaelus had made his decision.

"It has been rumored that your master accepts slaves. Such serious accusations usually hold a kernel of truth. As such I cannot have you treat with us within the palace. However, you may go to the gardens and any who wish to speak to you may see you there. That is my only offer."

Tenanye had just sat down when all of a sudden, loud banging rang out. Xiao Jingshen shrieked out, covering her ears. “Not again.” She cried. Severyn yanked Tenanye down with Xiao Jingshen in his other arm.
Thankfully, Blue froze the bullet’s mid air with his wand and Zexen with a surprising amount of diplomacy, approached Nemu, begging the ensemble to reconsider. Standing, and taking her seat again, Tenanye decided she would not, she had no interest in Slavemasters and would not trade for goods forged off of the backs of slaves. She abolished this in her own empire. To top it all off this Sphex had the audacity not to show his face and send this poor half automaton girl in his place. No. She would not stand for that. She appreciated Zexen’s open heart, he seemed less like his father in that regard. It didn’t matter that Valen would be speaking to her, she had no plans on trading with those exiles anyway. "It has been rumored that your master accepts slaves. Such serious accusations usually hold a kernel of truth. As such I cannot have you treat with us within the palace. However, you may go to the gardens and any who wish to speak to you may see you there. That is my only offer." Arkaelus said, and Tenanye cast a small smile, barely visible in his direction but it vanished as she turned to address the others. “We of Anansai, shall not partake in such trade with a Taskmaster, who does not give us the time to address us himself and sends this poor creature to do his leg work. “ She turned her attention to Nemu. “If this was meant to let us know he exists, then his point has been made. His wicked presence has been felt.” She said with a nod to the creature. “You can relay this message to him, from me, Empress Tenanye of Anansai," She said, looking the creature in the eye from where she stood.
Image

"I fear no monsters, for I am one.” She said, and turned her head from the girl, ignoring her from this point on.
“Empress...?” Severyn asked, clearly unsettled by Tenanye’s show of strength. “Yes?” She asked casually. “Nevermind.” He said with a swallow. He had something on his mind, but Tenanye didn’t have the energy for it now. Not in front of them anyway, she had a feeling what he was thinking. He did not think it wise to openly call out this Sphex character but she needed to not only show him, but the others as well. Most didn’t know what to make of the Faeries, some thought them sweet and kind creatures, others thought them dangerous. Tenanye needed to make sure these mortals knew, she was both.

The ride to Jodan was a long one. The company of the crowned prince had made it more bearable. Usually the only thing that one could do was dig themselves into their coat and the soldiers weren't up for much talk at that point. Dorian let out a sigh of relief as they went through the gates of Jodan. He had been out training the reserves and various militias for nearly a month. It would feel nice to take a dip in the palace's bathhouse or eat a warm meal for once.

As they rode up the city he had ordered an officer to report to the Khalidoran Arsenal within Jodan. The arsenal was to stop the production of ships and immediately shift to the production of rifles. Most standard and a quarter of them using his lock design. If a handful of senators were indeed conspiring against the Republic, those guns would quickly put an end to it.

Finally they had reached the doors to the palace. Upon entering all seemed normal, except that one of Sphex's slaves were there. He was supposed to meet outside of the city instead of with the king. Dorian was too tired to care at the moment. As he walked with his wet, muddy boots, he signaled an obviously annoyed servant to fetch him a pitcher of his personal wine. Scanning the table he found a chair across the darker woman.

After sitting Dorian realized that he hadn't a clue who most of these people were. He new of the Markus' and of the Ashakara brothers and the newly crowned king of Cinnabar, Arim, but no one else. His only job was to know of the nations that could endanger Khalidoran interests, which their were only three to his knowledge. The dark woman in front of him had some interesting friends, one even had odd ears, perhaps a deformity. There was a bald man and a young man there too.

Dorian took off his fur coat and drank his wine. He realized that his plain white tunic and trousers were little more than peasant clothing and could be considered inappropriate for the meeting.

"I would ask for my lords to excuse my poor manners. The journey has been a long one and I have been looking foward to a hot meal for quite some time. I am Dorian Ursuul, Grand General of the Republic." He smiled as he said it. He looked up at Sphex's creation. He had no clue what it used to survive, but it looked tired. "Come!" He called out to the creature. "It looks like you could use something in your belly!" He pulled up a chair for it to sit on. He looked at Arkaelus only to the a sour look on his cousin's face. "Did I do something wrong?" Dorian thought to himself.

Xiao Jingshen was glad Tenanye didn’t want anything to do with that creature. It wasn’t really fair though, she was only a slave, she didn’t have a choice in anything she did so they should be atleast nice to her, her master though, if someone could do that to another---
“Ow...!” Xiao Jingshen felt a burning on her arm suddenly. “Meimei!” She whimpered, causing Tenanye to whip around. “What...what’s happening?” She asked her, as Xiao Jingshen held her arm. “My arm...it burns.” She whimpered. Severyn was up and out of his seat in an instant. “Is it Iron?”
“I was just sitting here, there is no iron here.” Xiao Jingshen sobbed. Tenanye gingerly rolled up her sleeve, and sucked in a breath. Xiao Jingshen followed her gaze to a large red burn in the same of a hand curling around Xiao Jingshen’s arm. “What sorcery is this?” Tenanye breathed, the red stark against Xiao Jingshen’s unmarred porcelain skin.
Xiao Jingshen frowned at the burn and then an image came to her mind. A man, dark of skin, black of hair, holding her arm...but it wasn’t her arm at all. It was tan, and decidedly male.
“Kiran.” She breathed and Severyn and Tenanye both looked at her strangely. “What?”
“My friend, the one I gave the kiss to, He was hurt.” She said, and Tenanye set her jaw. “Well there is nothing we can do for you, You silly girl, I told you not to use magic without me present.” She said and Xiao Jingshen nodded, she knew better then that, but she wanted to help him, repay him for helping her. “But he helped me.” She said softly, looking down at her feet. “ I know that, Little Sparrow, I know, but you did not take in to account the cost of that kiss. You can sense him when he is dire need, yes, but you also feel his pain, even if he is not in dire need, you take that pain unto yourself...A Fairy Kiss, is strong magic and which means it has stronger reproductions.” She said with a sigh. “It gets stronger when he is closer, if he has an itch, you will want to scratch, that’s what that bond is. He may call you and break the bond but until then...you are bound to him.” She told her and Xiao Jingshen nodded solemnly then realized. “ You mean he is close?” She asked with a smile she tried to hide. Tenanye’s face went blank. “That would be the part you heard, yes, this means he is near, that’s why you felt the pain so suddenly.” She said and sat back in her seat. Xiao Jinghen all but forgotten about the pain in her arm, and looked toward the door, hoping Kiran would enter. She would be happy to see him again. “Will he feel my pain?” She asked. Tenanye gave a simple nod. Xiao Jingshen really hoped to see him again if only to tell him what she really did.
It was at the moment that a man entered the room, taking a seat in front of Tenanye who gave a soft nod in greeting.
"I would ask for my lords to excuse my poor manners. The journey has been a long one and I have been looking foward to a hot meal for quite some time. I am Dorian Ursuul, Grand General of the Republic." He said and Tenanye gave a smile in return.
He then looked over at the creature again and waved it over "Come!" He called ” It looks like you could use something in your belly. Xiao Jingshen stiffened. She did not want that thing anywhere near her and neither did Tenanye.
“Grand General, Greetings, I am Tenanye Ananse, Empress of Anansai, this is my sister, Princess Xiao Jingshen and my Advisor, Prince Severyn Alderson of the Seelie Court, the King, your brother? I am assuming. He has declined the creature entrance to this meeting, but has allowed her to stay in Khalidor should anyone else wish to host her.” She said calmly. “So If you would be so kind, as to allow her to leave, I would be grateful as this creature unsettles my sister, and I would very much like her not to be anywhere near her.” She said and Xiao Jingshen brow creased bashfully.

Valen glared at his son for offering Valen’s listening ear to the servant of Tsarvin Sphex. He could see the longer Zexen spent in the presence of The Blue Faery the more he began to exhibit his benevolent demeanor. Valen wasn’t quite sure how to feel about such a phenomenon. However he’d have to deal with it later. Zexen turned toward his father with a hopeful yet sheepish smile. He knew he would have piss his father off royally but he felt it was worth it to do the right thing.

"It has been rumored that your master accepts slaves. Such serious accusations usually hold a kernel of truth. As such I cannot have you treat with us within the palace. However, you may go to the gardens and any who wish to speak to you may see you there. That is my only offer." Arkaelus said.

Zexen turned back toward King Arkaelus and kneeled down as he said, “Your majesty, thank you for your generosity and fairness in the matter.” He rose to his feet and joined his father once again. Blue as well followed the young warrior, his dragonfly like wings fluttering swiftly in the air.

Valen stepped closer to his son when he was near and said quietly, “I will grant no audience to that abomination. You and Father Superior have been more than FAIR by allowing it to live.” He then glared at Blue, “You should have let those rifle rounds tear it to shreds, rid the world of an evil.”

Blue folded his arms in a huff as he floated at shoulder’s height. “If you recall there are forces of great power in the world that would like to see a similar fate bestowed upon you. You above all others should exhibit some compassion.”

Valen snapped back sharply, “I suppose I can count you among the ranks of those that would relish in my destruction?”

Blue looked over with an obvious look of hurt on his face, “You KNOW that’s not true.” Father Superior replied.

Zexen cringed hearing the two argue. “What is it with you two?! Care to explain to me what this bickering is about?” He fussed. Both Valen and Father Superior abruptly halted in their argument and said nothing more. This annoyed Zexen even further. He shook his head in frustration at the two Faeries silence on the matter and then focused his attention on Tenanye.

Tenanye turned to address the others. “We of Anansai, shall not partake in such trade with a Taskmaster, who does not give us the time to address us himself and sends this poor creature to do his leg work.“ She turned her attention to Nemu. “If this was meant to let us know he exists, then his point has been made. His wicked presence has been felt.” She said with a nod to the creature. “You can relay this message to him, from me, Empress Tenanye of Anansai," She said, looking the creature in the eye from where she stood. "I fear no monsters, for I am one.” She said, and turned her head from the girl.

The announcer informed the room of the arrival of The Princes of Ashkara and well as General Dorian of Khalidor. Zexen looked over in anticipation. He was eager to lay eyes upon the man the King of Khalidor requested he duel. Dorian seemed formidable. He looked as if he’d been traveling for some time, muddied boots and non-regal clothing. Zexen was reminded of the men he trained alongside in the Nation of Athedale under commander Peregrine Le Buque. Zexen watched with a grin on his face as Dorian signaled an obviously annoyed servant to fetch him a pitcher of his personal wine. Dorian found a chair across the Anansai Empress.

Zexen looked to Blue with an excited smile, “I’m going to have a seat. You should return to human size. I don’t think there are pixie sized accommodations here.”

Blue snickered at Zexen’s recommendation, “Unfortunately young one, you’re right.” With that he altered his size once again. He with the shake of his shoulders his dragonfly like wings faded away like pixie dust in the air. He took a seat next to Zexen, reluctantly not far from Valen.

Blue noticed that the Empress, Severyn and Xiao seemed somewhat distressed. He leaned a bit in his chair as they examined Xiao’s arm. He hoped the innocent young fae was alright. When he looked upon her he could tell she was now different, bonded to another. He could also tell that it wasn’t just a magical bond but one of the heart. With that, he smiled and felt she’d be alright. He thought to himself, ”Her journey begins now.”

"I would ask for my lords to excuse my poor manners. The journey has been a long one and I have been looking foward to a hot meal for quite some time. I am Dorian Ursuul, Grand General of the Republic." Dorian smiled as he said it. He looked up at Sphex's creation. "Come!" He called out to the creature. "It looks like you could use something in your belly!" He pulled up a chair for it to sit on. He looked at Arkaelus only to the a sour look on his cousin's face.

Zexen watched Dorian with unbiased invite Nemu over to eat with the group. His smile and liking for the general grew. Zexen turned to his father and snickered. ”See, Dorian gets it.” he took another sip of wine.

Valen looked over in annoyance, “And so will you if you press the issue any further.” He said with a huff.

“Grand General, Greetings, I am Tenanye Ananse, Empress of Anansai, this is my sister, Princess Xiao Jingshen and my Advisor, Prince Severyn Alderson of the Seelie Court, the King, your brother? I am assuming. He has declined the creature entrance to this meeting, but has allowed her to stay in Khalidor should anyone else wish to host her.” Tenanye said calmly. “So If you would be so kind, as to allow her to leave, I would be grateful as this creature unsettles my sister, and I would very much like her not to be anywhere near her.” She said and Xiao Jingshen brow creased bashfully.

After a moment, Father Superior decided that he should introduce himself. This would lessen the tension involving Nemu’s presence and possible departure. He stood to his feet and with a humble smile he spoke, “Grand General, Princes of Askara, Salutations, I am Luin Elen, Father Superior of the wishing star faeries of Anansai. It is an honor to meet you.” He took his seat.

Valen and Zexen stood to greet the general as well. “I am Valen Mori Elen, of Valen Alus. This is my son ambassador Zexen Tiberius Elen. Greetings to the Princes of Askara, and the Grand General of Khalidor, from my humble nation.” Valen greeted with a bow.

Zexen said with a sheepish smile, “General Dorian, I have been honored by King Arkaelus in being asked to participate in a friendly sparring match with your grace. I much look forward to learning from you Grand General.”
