In a time where lore rules the mind, and the clash of steel is common place a samurai treads the pathway between life and death. Driven by a sense of duty, upheld by honor he serves his daimyo without question. He lives to serve, indeed the title of Samurai (侍). Samurai were the military elite of Japan. Scholars, Poets, Priests and Warriors all rolled into one body. They perceived their deaths as an honorable act rather than a thing to be simply feared. The were apart of the upper caste of societal norms. The wealthy and the lavish. The were expected to die at their lords command and be thrust into any engagement to bring back the heads of the defeated warriors in which the fought.

Their battles were deadly, precise movements were needed as any one of them could be the the last. Their weapons; single-edged curved swords of high quality steel forged over months in a ritualistic, almost spiritual progression. Made manifest by the ability to cut cleanly through flesh and bone alike in one swing.

But what if a samurai were to go into battle with the question...Do I really want to do this? Do I really want to live this way? If so, why? It is in a samurai's duty to never question his lord, no matter what. Loyalty until the end. That's what it meant to be a warrior. A true warrior.

Kado Fujioka was just such a man. He was loyal without reserve. He never questioned his lord until he met a geisha. A beautiful artisan. One that captivated his heart. But he was married. It did not seem to matter anymore. He wanted her to be his. His life had always been decided for him. Little did he know, that the Gods were watching. Waiting. Waiting for Kado to take the chance that would ultimately seal his fate...

This story will be laced with Japanese folk lore. Oni. Gemma.Yōkai. It is an ambitious idea, I won't lie. It's a Romeo-Juliet style of romance. Sex is involved, as well as violence. The title character "Dead Moon", or Kado Fujioka is or was a Samurai. An ambassador, an emissary, a warrior, a consultant, a dignitary and monk by nature of what the class itself entailed.

He is married to a beautiful wife, no kids yet. But it is a forced marriage. One prearranged by his family as most marriages at the time were prearranged. Japanese society then was based around arranged marriages. So they would be selected for marriage at a very early age for a bargaining tool to elevate the status of a family's name, honor and wealth. Men were generally the ones in good standing, so it would be the mothers of the daughters to present themselves as suitable housewives. That said, it didn't always mean they couldn't love each other when they were actually paired. That is a stigma society neglects to tell in these whimsical scenarios.

Now his wife WILL be part of the journey and the Fox will not perceive her bitterly or with disdain. As the Fox spirit, though showing itself as his lover, is actually his conscious through this journey. The Fox will pose him questions and Kado, my character, will interact. He has free will of course but it is the Fox's job to guide him through whatever bad or good may come along to the Lover's heart.

This afterlife is much like the real one, and the character will believe that he is still alive as people will interact with him, they will even inter act with the Ogres and demons (In fear of course) but it will all seem very convincing to him. It is the Fox's duty to guide him to the heart of his beloved.

The journey there is fraught with perilous decisions, decisions about Duty, Honor, Loyalty, Faith, and Love. Decisions that can be swayed and manipulated by The Fox, and by Kado's own inner demons. Each of these subjects conjure up a plethora of varying Yōkai and the sorts of other fantastical beasts. Kado's soul hangs in the balance.
