So you've accepted the invitation to partake in the exploration of a dungeon that may very well prove your demise in the pursuit of material wealth. Just another day, right?

1,086 readers have visited Delve since Gestalt created it.

Introduction

Greetings Sir and or Madam! First of all, allow me to apologize if I am interrupting anything with the delivery of this message, but this is an urgent matter.

If you are reading this missive, then Silice[My secretary and assistant] has routed through much of your personal and private life, as well as your past career choices. Yes, yes, I know what you are thinking: "Is this some sort of joke?" the answer is no. Silice is an extremely thorough woman, and rest assured that she, and by extension myself, is/am aware of your abilities and...well, shall we say, less than savory actions you may have been apart of in the past. Again, do not be alarmed. I have no interest in any crimes you may or not have committed. No, my interest lies with your unique skillset.

You see, I have come across the coordinates of a ruined metropolis dating back to the Age of Eithr. Yes, old, I know! That's what makes it so exciting! Well, after a few forays into the first level of this buried city I discovered a wealth of artifacts. In fact, by Silice's estimate, within the minor area that I covered there was roughly two-thousand gold in ancient and valuable items. That, and the fact that I was the one who broke open the seal is enough to safely assume that I was the first soul to set foot in the ruin for over sixteen centuries. If by this point in the letter you are still reading, then I commend you for your attentiveness.

The reason I did not delve deeper was that I could not. Several guardians; Remarkable things really, fists as big as a man is tall...oh, yes. Well, the constructs attacked me as I neared the second level of the subterranean structure. I only managed to destroy one before the rest overwhelmed me and I was forced to retreat. Being a mage of no mean skill and a man of great means[see what I did there?], I could easily take a small army or mercenary troupe down into the ruins and be rid of the golems. Sadly, that is an idealistic notion. The soldiers or mercenaries[not much a difference really] would break ranks at first sight of a shiney bauble...and if there are golems merely guarding the gate, then it is reasonable to assume that greater dangers lurk deeper within the city.

That is where you come in. I am collecting a very small team of skilled individuals to assist me in this endeavor. You will be paid a commission of twenty gold per day of travel, the fee of three gold per additional service(lock-picking, removing traps, losing a limb, etc.), as well as full reimbursement for any gear or tools you may require for the delve. As an added bonus, you are also entitled to half of whatever treasures we may find in the city excluding items of a magical nature, which I claim sole right to unless I deem the item outside of my field of interest at which point said artifact/trinket will be alotted to the companion of my discretion. I estimate that the delve will take only four days to reach the center of the city, if we make good time.

Please, consider this once in a lifetime offer and get back to me. If you are interested and wish to know more, please make your way to Hillock City. Ask any of the guardsmen for directions to the Tower of Arcanum and head there post-haste. Upon your arrival, you will be reimbursed for any travel expenses and properly outfitted upon accepting my proposal.

Sincerely yours, Junior Mage and Duke of the House of Infiernis, Andre Hellion

Hello. Thank you for your interest in my RP, and for reading the introduction. The setting of Delve is that of a basic fantasy world. That is to say, knights, magic, dragons etc.. I intend for the roleplay to be played by a relatively small group(no more than five players), each with characters of varying abilities and skillsets that compliment one another. I will play as both a leader-type character and the Dungeon Master, ruling over in-game events and such.

As there will be combat in the roleplay, feel free to kill enemies at your discretion. Please be realistic however, as having a swordsman who tears everything apart with a sword that never dulls makes for a 2-dimensional character. Having a swordsman who actually knows how to parry, reacts to strong hits and suffers wounds on the other hand, creates an entirely new dynamic character and adds to the story.

Code: Select all
Name:
Title(s): (any nicknames, lordly titles, brands or handles your character is referred to as)
Age: (between 20 and 55 years)
Gender:
Appearance: (a quick synopsis of your character's physical appearance as if they had no clothing)

Famous, or Infamous?: (does your character have a reputation? If so, is it a good one, or a bad one?)
Alignment: (good, evil, neutral, ambivalent, etc.)
Past: (list any crimes, misdemeanors or memorable actions. Feel free to make up events)

Class: (Knight, Warlock, Psion, Thief, etc. a general term for your character's lot in life)
Specialties: (combat, lock-picking, stealth, healing magic, etc.)
Equipment: (basically your armor/clothing, weaponry and tools of your trade. Climbing kits, rations, water and other delve-essentials will be provided in-game)

Other: (anything else we should know about your character before diving into an abyss from which we may never return?)

As exceptional individuals, it would be wise to make your characters unique. A cut above the normal fair of humanity. Feel free to ask if you have any questions.

Akir managed to regain enough stability to force is bloodied body back onto his feet, He clenched his bleeding brow as he followed in with the rest. He waved off Nathan when he offered to do what he could to help clean off the wounds. “I am a warrior… not some frightful peasant…. I bare my mistakes and accept their pain as my failure. Those who allow them to be erased learn nothing at all…” e roughly wiped the crimson mud that had formed due to his open wounds and his collision with the ground from his face. To prevent it from obstructing his vision. “I hope there is more to face then such pathetic beasts... They weren’t even worth drawing my blade…” He shook his head disappointed as he continued to follow Adrian with no outward signs of discomfort from his pain… yes it hurt more then one could imagine… but he had swallowed his pain for his pride was still greater.

“Lord Hellion should we truly continue on with out her? With the beasts that remain within this horrid place she could easily run into trouble! it’s a horrible idea… that and she is our lock expert! We’ll waste time later if we run into a sealed door and…”

Nathan was cut off mid sentence by a rather annoyed Akir. “Shut up… you were given an order… so stop bitching and follow it… seeing were pacing ourselves with a scholar in heavy armor I highly doubt she’ll have a problem catching up…”

Nathan grumbled several curses before falling in behind Akir, the grumblings were centered on Akir being a mule’s son.

"Hn... would you look at that. Nice, shot, Scaly." Between them, she and the absurdly-tall (as most of them were) Drakian had taken down one of the stone manticores without much difficulty. Though speaking of good shots... Gwen whistled low, cocking her head to one side at the beastie the tusked man had felled. "My, my, what did you do to his face? Remind me not to let you shoot me, eh Fangs?" Technically, she was well-aware that they were not fangs, but tusks, though honestly fangs sounded better, so she went with that instead. It was actually (not that anyone would know) quite close to a Den name, and thus to the few people who would know, an indication of friendly respect.

At any rate, she approached the entranceway to the city with her hands laced together behind her back, looking for all the world as though she were taking a scenic stroll. And whyever not? Very seldom did someone lose something important for the little effort it took to make things pleasant or interesting. Something about the way the thief spoke from behind the door bothered her though. Leaving someone behind in what was clearly a booby-trapped ruin reeked of deception or at the very least a sort of cavalier attitude towards the lives of one's hired help that she had grown accustomed to but never liked. If that girl didn't reappear in short order, something was seriously amiss. Besides, the offer to have everyone else move ahead, no matter the phrasing, was more selfless than she would have thought Karla to be. Was she not concerned with the others "hogging the loot," to phrase it indelicately?

Even so, Gwen was easily smart enough to know when to keep her mouth shut, and she did, simply shrugging and following along as though she were only slightly perturbed by the situation, as rational people would have every right to be. It would be a poor show of acting to have no reaction, after all, not when she wished to come across as fairly healthy in the emotional development department, unlike Broody Sword Guy or Silice the Silent.

Maybe she wasn't giving anyone enough credit. That was a side-effect of cynicism, really: you tended to think the worst of things before you had seen them in their entirety. A good reason not to give meaningful opinions on anything, which she usually tried to avoid unless asked directly. "Ever wonder why the shiny baubles and dangerous magical artifacts don't end up in the Lost City of So-and-So the Benevolent? Such-and-Such the Wise? It's always 'the Mad' or 'the Conqueror,' or something like that... surely less violent or imbalanced people kept pretty magical things also?" Gwen craned her neck and appeared to examine the suspended glowing crystals, though privately she was ruminating on the possibilities presented by these further portcullises. Unless one of the others had a very well-hidden talent for infiltration, the next door would probably be hers, and she rather disliked the proposition of ending up "stuck" behind a door which may or may not have arcane "traps" attached to it, making it "impossible" to take down with magic or perhaps even brute force.

If they all left the other behind so easily, she doubted very much anything would change in regards to herself, which meant that she would have to be careful at the very least.

Seestra was impressed, to say the least, with her companions. When the guardians had simply settled into being, it took her by surprise. Sure, she technically knew that they would be there, but it was unsettling when they appeared. She had long ago fine tuned her magic. She could sense the undead, sometimes even the living, but stone was neither and therefore beyond her. In fact, she only had one spell that worked against things that were neither alive nor dead – the conjuration of acid. Instead of using it though, she just watched. Who knew if they would need it later?

When the nasty man fell, Seestra tilted her head, wondering if he was dead. She sent a tendril of feeling to search for his life force and when she found it, her ears lay flat against her head. Stupid thing was alive. With a snort her people were known for, she reached out and grasped the magic only she could see, twining around everything. Well, maybe the Duke could see it if he had the right spell or training. She started to weave it, her ears flicking to keep her informed of the battle while her eyes stayed focused. When she was done – and really, it only took a few seconds – she examined her work. The magic had settled into the form of a blanket, but with large evenly dispersed holes in it. With a flick of her wrist, she sent it to float over then rest on the nasty man.

It wasn’t a spell she had ever seen a mage use. Not even the few that could heal as well as shamans. It settled over the recipient, slowing blood loss and encouraging the wounds to heal faster, but since it didn’t heal directly it took less magic and could be cast most often.

That was all that he would get from her though. She would do her job, but she was saving her healing for someone more… savory. Once she was sure the healing net had bound to him correctly, she looked around at the others. They were all making their way to the center and she followed, watching each for injuries. One reason that she used the net, besides its low magic cost, was because it was simple and the healed rarely even knew they were being affected. She had learned long ago that it many cared more about pride than a limb or life and refused to be allowed to be healed. She could ease their aches and injuries without them ever knowing.

As she passed the door, Seestra paused and put a hand on it. She could hear the tumblings and clicks and the occasional swear word. “Perhaps its better if you stay in there until we return, little rouge. You don’t know what might wander through these tunnels.”

She readjusted her pack and turned towards the rest of the group, her eyes settling on the Duke. Her voice came out light-hearted. “It is a good thing she has a weeks worth of rations, yes?”

It was stupid to provoke a man as powerful as her employer, but it irked Seestra to leave a teammate behind. Especially when they weren’t dying and it was only a lock between them. Never mind the fact that she would leave half of them without looking back, but as an employer, the Duke had certain responsibilities. She didn’t hold the illusion that the mage held her as an equal – she knew she was a pawn the moment she got the letter. But she didn’t like the idea of being thrown away as soon as it was convenient either.

Despite the musty smell of long decayed fabric clinging to the air and the occasional hint of rot, Andre found the main road pleasant in an eerie sort of way. The party had been advancing down the paved road for over a half an hour now without pause and were making good time towards the next porticulis. Silice did frown whenever Andre knelt down to observe a fallen shard of luminescent crystal or placed a small piece of chipped bone into his robes for later examination. In fact, it was not even the fact that he was touching these items that unnerved Silice.

All across the city(as far down the oddly lit streets that she could see anyway) there were splinters, hunks and pieces of bone on the ground at regular intervals. Regular was an accurate word for it. The bones had been placed in their current position, in jagged lines spanning the bredth of each street every thirty paces. Exactly, every thirty paces. On top of that, fragments from the glowing gems embedded in the ceiling were lying on the ground or buried within the stone tops of some of the buildings. Given that almost none of these fragments were positioned below the gem whose color they correspond with as well as the amount of force needed to have such a thing stick into rock, there must have been some kind of spell or siege weapon that dislodged the crystals from their place.

Andre either did not notice, or, more likely, did not care. While Silice was confident in her ability to wield a blade and held even more faith in her lord's arcane prowess, she was not above thinking that unknown territory held champions of it's own. The fact that they had encountered no resistance thus far did little to allay her fears. Silice glanced back periodically to see that the party was still whole(she no longer counted the thieving waif as a member) and indulged in a private smile of self-confirmation. They were expecting something as well.

"Ah! Look there!" Andre had pulled ahead to the front of the pack once more and was pointing towards a large, temple-like structure up ahead. "That is the entrance that leads to the next gate. We still have a few miles to go, but inside we should find old shops, waiting areas and other amenities. A bazaar of sorts for those who lived close to the gate on the level below and those seeking to purchase provisions before leaving this level."

A few minutes later the group passed through the arch and into the interior bazaar. Andre's eyes practically lit up with childish curiosity. The inside of the structure could be likened to an oversized hall within a grand cathedral, had cathedrals had shops and inlets built into the walls. Disheveled curiosities and baubles were scattered across the carpeted shops, but one thing that stuck out to Andre almost immediately was the distinct lack of litter on the still-cobbled main road. The items on the ground literally did not cross the threshold between carpet and stone.

Andre put a hand to his chin in thought, raising his hand to signal for a momentary halt at the entrance to the bazaar. He peered into the gloom up ahead; No glowing crystals lit the way past fifty feet from the entrance. Whatever sort of illumination source the bazaar had used was long dead. That would prove problematic should the need to fight arise. Shrugging off Silice's offers to scout ahead, the mage stepped into the hall.

Upon his foot making contact with the floor, the stone instantly vanished to reveal a yawning black pit. Andre realized this too late for his other foot was already in mid-swing. From behind, Silice cried out and Andre tensed up fearing the immediate plunge into oblivion. Nothing. Indignity shifting into confusion, the duke stomped on his so-called 'vanished' footing and was rewarded with a hollow thump. "It's solid...some sort of glass, I think. Definetly enchanted...why would a shop need a disappearing floor though? No matter. Onward!"

With a shrug, the mage moved on. He slowed his pace to observe the non-existant floor. Underneath their feet, stretching far ahead into the darkness the slightly glossy floor revealed nothing but inky nothingness below. For a moment he thought he saw a flash of white somewhere far below, but immediately dismissed the notion, attributing it to the occasional glare on the glass. The yawning floor did not extend to the shops, Andre noted with some interest. The floors to those places remained in tact. "Feel free to take note of any trinkets you may wish to claim on the return trip. Don't be too greedy though, as most of these items are mundane and hold little value compared to what rests within deeper levels.

"Goestlite." with the activation word, Andre activated the second of four rituals he had prepared in advance for the delve. Ten points of gray light formed in a wide circle above the caster's head, casting light roughly fifteen feet out from his position. As the group would move further into the darkness, the glimpse of white Andre noticed earlier made another appearance back at the entrance, passing under the glassy surface for an instant. It took a keen interest to the brightness that began to move into a place where no light had shown for centuries, and stalked along below the group unseen.

Akir walked with firm confident steps… when one had lived knowing and seeing only death… one becomes fearless… for Death has lost all of his leverage. Why be afraid when you’ve had to swallow the fear of hundreds if not thousands of enemies. Watched them beg… weep… and pray as their end came full circle. What fear is there when death pervades your every thought… wiping away your humanity. He knew most of them didn’t trust him… and if they were smart they knew he didn’t trust them. It was all a game each had a knife to one another’s throat… the only question was who would make the first plunge. That was how mortals were… cheaters… connivers… the eyes were bleak through the eyes that never befell a single act of sacrifice, a soul that had never felt kindness… war… war was his blood… and death his breath.

The Black Blood Swordsmen washed his gaze over the city as they progressed through it and while even Adrian was caught off guard when the floor ‘vanished’ Akir maintained the static expression he had worn since they entered the city. Though even he admitted to himself… in a body that had endured the world he still held one fear… one single flicker of humanity in an cocoon of apathy… he did not fear death itself… merely dying a monster.

Nathan had continued writing his map taking in as much detail as he could, so enchanted in his work he didn’t even notice the floor ‘vanishing’ and simply kept walking as he started to map out the structure. Though after a few minutes he let out a startled cry before leaping into one of the side alcoves when he first realized he was walking on nothing. With a heavy breath he eyed the see through floor tapping it lightly with his boot. “What the hell is this… a floor meant to scare use to death! Not the worst idea for a trap… nearly succeeded…”

Gwen resisted the urge to sigh theatrically and lapsed into silence once more. Nope; apparently not even horrible jokes could coerce anyone into speaking to her. Well, fine then. If nobody wished to leave the solitude of their thoughts, she wasn't going to press the point. Rather than let it get to her, she devoted her attention to seeking out as many interesting tidbits about her surroundings as she could. An inverted ziggaurat, was it? If there was this much interesting stuff up here, she wondered might be in the small area at the bottom. Then again, that was what they were here to discover, was it not?

When they entered what appeared to be a honeycombed passageway, she took one look at the stone floor in front of them, or more accurately how pristine it was compared to the ground in front of the depression in the walls that might have been merchants' stalls at some point, and shook her head. There was something not right about that, and she was opening her mouth to say as much when Hellion simply stepped onto it, which killed the illusion of stonework and left him standing on what appeared to be nothing.

Why bother making a solid vanishing floor? It was not as though anyone would be paying for their unwariness with anything more than a moment's fright, after all. Perhaps it was one of those things that people did simply because they wanted everyone else to know they could, like when aristocrats built homes far too large for them to live in the whole thing. She tested the surface by hopping up and down a few times (if it couldn't take her doing that, it wasn't going to hold up under half of the others, anyway) and was surprised to find that it felt just as solid as stone, if smoother, like glass. Crouching, she rapped on it with a few knuckles. Hm... definitely more like glass than ordinary granite.

She considered testing that theory with her glass-cutting thieves' implements, but the wisdom of doing this while walking on the surface was questionable, and it didn't look like she'd have enough time besides. Shaking her head, she flitted over to one of the carved-out hollows that must have been a shop. She didn't touch anything; none of it interested her for its material value, anyway, merely for its use. There were several devices she had never seen before, though from the lines inscribed at regular intervals, she would suppose them to be some variety of merchant's measures. What, exactly, would be measured with what looked like a bladed compass was unknown to her, but all the same...

"Hm... if they wanted to scare us to death, you think they would have tried that before the stone things," she said with a shrug, stepping back out onto the glass floor. As she did so, Gwen was overcome with the uncanny feeling that she was being watched, and the hair on the back of her neck pricked. Her posture shifted slightly; she placed more weight on the balls of her feet rather than her heels, and held her arms steadily at her side. It was a subtle change, but not an imperceptible one. Still, she did not comment on the feeling, and continued to walk with the group as though she had felt nothing at all.

Like any mercenary true to form, Sek shrugged at the prospect of leaving behind a fellow member of the expidition. If she had been chosen in the first place, it was for good reason. If something else was occupying these ruins then a supposed 'Master Thief' would have no trouble sticking to the shadows. The city of Eithr was in no short supply of those. Being a paladin, even one devoted to a dark god, the half-orc's senses were highly attuned to the ebb and flow of energies that altered alignment.

As the group made it's slow approach towards the middle of the city level these powers became increasingly more apparent. Within the fungus-tinged air was the subtle tang of death. Not the dried blood and rotten oranges smell of decaying bodies, but the bittersweet taste of lingering souls. Sadly, as the only member of the group in direct communion with a diefic being, Sek was in all likelihood the only one who could sense anything other than a feeling of creeping dread or a slight sensation akin to being observed.

The strange building was a nice change of pace. Sek relaxed visibly, glad that he no longer had to observe the ever-deepening shadows cast by obstructions in the crystal-given light. Yet, halting at the mage's call for a stop, a small problem reared it's head. The ground appeared to...well, disappear, leaving Andre standing in midair.

That was not what disturbed the paladin though. It was the floor itself. As the others moved on, Sek--still standing on the stone ground just within the doorway--crouched down and placed a hand against the smooth surface. Cold as ice. With a silent prayer to the Brute God, Sek called upon the minor power to sense the alignment of a specific target. in this case: the floor itself. A slow sense of creeping dread welled up and caused the half orc to recoil and shiver uncontrollably for a moment. Fear? Inanimate objects do not feel fear...whatever the enchantment, it is not good, but neither is it evil.

Choosing to carefully observe his surroundings instead, Sek arose and jogged forward to catch up to the second thief in the party. Andre had said something about their being a difference between Karla Night and Gwendolyn Whateverherlastnamewas, but to an orc a thief was a thief. He could see her observing the area as keenly as he and noted her change in stance. Having fought many skirmishes, recognizing changes in footing came second nature to Sek. He decided that being close to an ally that would not be caught flat-footed like most of the party would minimize his obligation to dole out healing prayers. He could only invoke two a day, and would prefer not to use them on others.

"Do you really think that? I mean, what if the golems were merely to set us on edge? What if the defense-system was deliberately set up to give us a relatively long reprieve inbetween traps so that this specific encounter would stop our hearts with panic." Sek shrugged, flashing a toothy grin. "Could be that the enchantment that magnified the intensity of it's victim's heartbeats has decayed over the years!" he extended an open hand towards the rogue and gave her a less fearsome, if more warm smile. "Sek, paladin of the Brute God Uruvos and seeker of extravagant battles. Battles of the bedroom count too, so long as there is not too much 'backstabbing'. Great jests aside, I have a proposition for you if you would care to hear."

"Do you really think that? I mean, what if the golems were merely to set us on edge? What if the defense-system was deliberately set up to give us a relatively long reprieve inbetween traps so that this specific encounter would stop our hearts with panic." Gwen blinked, glancing towards the greenish fellow that had spoken. "I doubt such things were only meant to intimidate. I'm not so arrogant as to think that I'm the best fighter in the world, but I'm pretty good at killing things, as I daresay are the rest of us. Tell me that sort of power wouldn't have been more than sufficient to kill most people."

She regarded him skeptically for a moment, then shrugged and took the proffered hand, grinning her amusement at the introduction. "Is that so? Gwendolyn Valhaven; rogue, saboteur, acrobat, thief, and occasionally a few other things too, if the occasion demands. My backstabbing is only ever literal and conducted with knives, but whether the same is true of my acrobatics is entirely a secret." She released his hand, for all her flippancy still not reassured that something untoward wasn't about to happen.

"A proposition, is it?" she asked lightly, casting her eyes about the room in search of no particular thing, but rather anything that might give her some hint as to why she was feeling so on-edge at the moment. "You know, usually I require at least a few drinks before considering propositions, but I think I might be willing to hear you out." Especially if it means I know someone else might have at least a mild investment in my survival. Her guess was that he simply sought a 'you-watch-my-back-I-watch-yours' arrangement, and frankly, that would be fine by her, especially in a place like this.

It was common for those who worked for the Fox to conduct their business in pairs or threes, but this was not to say she'd never been required to look out for herself and only herself before. Still, there was no denying that allies were useful, end of story. The trade-off was that she'd actually have to make some effort to ensure that said ally survived, but that was not so difficult if they knew what they were doing.

Glancing down at the floor, she noted that the darkness therein was not quite as opaque as it had seemed on first glance. It was more like there was a roiling mass of dark substance down there that occasionally shifted about. Or was that simply her imagination? It was hard to tell for certain, and she would not have been able to even guess were it not for Hellion's mage-light. Whatever it was, it was not composed of water or its vapors, she could say that much with certainty.

Actually, Gwendolyn's assumption(and immediate dismissal) of the darkness below being of an aqueous nature was probably the most correct guess of the bunch so far. Much closer than the half-orc thinking that it was pure malice at any rate. The roiling mass below somehow became more distinct in the supernatural light that the mage was shedding. Underfoot, Andre could discern individual ripples and currents beneath the glassy surface by the reflection off of the different levels of water.

What was causing these disturbances, he could not say. He could tell as well as the next person that there was something very wrong with the situation, and the feeling was reaffirmed by Silice moving closer in order to protect him more adequately. The nobleman smiled reassuringly before puffing out his chest and moving forward with a swagger that only looked good on one born of higher status. Andre noticed the orc and the thief getting acquainted and allowed himself another small smile. It was always good to have bodyguards that trusted one another, as opposed to double-crossing fools that cared nothing for human life.

Before the hypocrasy of that thought could dawn on the duke, a drastic change in the atmosphere made him stop dead in his tracks. Silice was already in a wary stance with sword drawn and a third wand in her off-hand. The battle-wise attendant scanned the darkness ahead, but her efforts were fruitless. Just as well, it was not the road ahead that caught Andre's eye. It was below.

No longer did the glass beneath the group's feet separate them from an endless abyss of lightless water. Now, it was white. The first thing Silice noticed was the writhing shock of white hair that moved just under the surface of the glass. It was a massive bundle that pressed against the glass from wall to wall, long enough that it extended into the darkness far beyond Andre's mage-light. Next was the pallid face connected to the hair. With it's flawless ivory skin and soft curves the giant might have been attractive, but the obvious lack of eyes made it seem much more menacing. The giant opened it's mouth and ineffectually an a blood-red tongue against the transparent ground.

The first thing that came to mind was not that of There's a gigantic, colorless woman two inches below me. Nor was it, There is a huge subterranean humanoid that not only breathes water, but somehow manages to find enough sustenance in this dismal environment. No. The very first thought to cross Andre Hellion's mind was: There is some sort of monstrous woman intent on devouring me whole...and barely a fingerlength of glass is keeping it from me.

As if hearing his thoughts, the creature's sightless visage seemed to orient on the mage. The aqua-giant withdrew it's tongue and bared a moutful of flawless pearly teeth. A hand with accordingly pale skin pressed up against the glass next to the wagon-sized face below the group as if it had been there the entire time. Andre paled and Silice took an involuntary step back.

A fracture no greater than the length of one's middle finger formed in the glass above the giant's hand, prompting the oddly feminine humanoid to smile even more broadly. Andre swallowed the growing lump in his throat and took off running down the hall further into the darkness, Silice hot on his heels. A multitude of cracks followed in their wake.

"Well, you've obviously never seen me dance. Most women laugh at the more...feral aspects of my physique, but all melt like freshly churned butter before my fiery footwork!" the half-orc clapped Gwen lightly on the shoulder and pursed his lips, noticing the red-head scanning the corridor once more. "You should not be so tense. Being aware is fine, but you...eh. Nevermind. What I wanted to ask in the first place, was would you be interested in a sort of alliance?" Sek lowered his voice and moved closer to Gwendolyn.

"I've a sneaking suspicion that, should one of our fellows not, our employer has designs on our lives. Not to say I don't trust the duke...wait. No. That's exactly what I mean." Sek took a step back on the off chance that his next words would provoke the young night-walker. "I also do not trust you, but you seem like the most aware person here. Hence, the most dangerous in the long run. I can stomp out a marauding swordsman avatar-of-death-wannabe, and elude the spells of a mage, but cunning has always gotten the better of me." Sek shrugged and extended his hand. "I won't run you through if you don't stab me. And, I might even send a bit of cover fire your way when needed. Deal?"

Sek found that he actually liked the girl's attitude. It was rare that he found humans so indifferent with regards to his...heritage. Most people viewed his hybridization as an abomination, something unintended to walk the natural world. This could be attributed to the shocking number of half-orcs born dead, but more likely could be traced back to the orc-human wars that ended less than a century ago.

Realizing he had fallen into a looser, less prepared walk, Sek righted himself andraised his heels. It was a good thing to, as the duke Hellion had come to a halt and was staring at... "By the Brute God's Bleeding Blade."

Professional adventuring had allowed Sek to see much(at least he liked to think so) of the world, but the being below the floor was something completely alien. He had seen sea-giants and subterranean titans, even fomorean hulks, but this creature did not register with any of the many monster logs Sek had read during his career. It's eerie beauty was captivating, in a disturbing sort of way, and Sek found himself looking at the area of it's face where eyes would have been. The next course of action was almost automatic: "Reveal the motive of my enemy."

With the prayer, Sek was granted a small amount of insight as to the aqua-giant's intent. He began running alongside Hellion and his woman. The first sensation was one of satisfaction directed at Andre and, to a lesser extent, Silice. The next was a flicker of irritation at Sek himself. Why was it pissed at him? He had done nothing! He was getting slightly concerned with the amount of cracks settling in on the floor. If they got too much bigger, they would be swimming the rest of the way.

By the way the aqua-giant smiled, that would not be very far.

Gwen gave the suggestion a moment's consideration. She was not in the least offended by being considered untrustworthy; in most situations, she was. Still, this was not most situations, and while she'd rather not have to rely in the slightest on anyone else, that wasn't really an option. The suspicion that Hellion had... plans for the lot of them was not a foreign one, but to hear it coming from someone else's mouth was unsettling. She was supposed to be paranoid about these things, but she didn't think that the job description of a Paladin really called for it.

Which only made it more likely. This alone was enough to convince her, and she was opening her mouth to affirm that she would, indeed, be perfectly willing to make such an arrangement when something shifted below them. It took a few seconds for Gwen to process what she was seeing, but still her reaction time was probably faster than the majority on that one. She did not spend a moment wondering where its eyes were, nor did she particularly need to figure out what exactly it intended. It was obvious enough that the answer was 'nothing good,' and the rogue's fight-or-flight instinct kicked in, flooding her system with adrenaline.

It was a heady rush, all the more so for the fact that part of it was not human, but fey in nature. Ever wonder why nobody sees dryads or nymphs unless the creature in question wants them too or slips up? Because that very same instinct, that same reflexive rush, was especially potent in beings that made fleeing their primary mode of survival. Shen she turned it to fighting, Gwen relished in it. Now? Her nerve endings weren't about to let her stand there, and she was off like a shot, not wanting to be standing on the glasslike floor when that thing make more than just a crack in it.

She could have outstripped the group in endorphin-induced speed, but she did have some sense of obligation, at least to a contract, and so she didn't get too far ahead. After all, she was supposed to be guarding the Duke over there, and she had been just about to tell Sek that she'd help him out too. Well, that's what you get for being a nice person sometimes, now isn't it? Her training informed her- loudly, she might add- that now was a good time to ditch everyone and leave, but then it had also been against taking on this contract in the first place, given that spelunking was no specialty of hers, and going in without a guaranteed path out was something only an idiot would do.

Which apparently made her an occasionally-not-totally-selfish idiot. Good to know.

Akir felt the beasts intent to kill… it was a warrior’s instinct that required a great deal of refinement… and instinct. He sprinted forward and leapt through the air in a midair cartwheel where in a flash of steel he stabbed the fey creature’s exposed thumb only to sheathe his sword again and continue his sprint. (As Andre is a mage I’m assuming he isn’t overly physically powerful as in fast compared to Akir ignore this if I‘m wrong.) As the black swordsmen hurtled along he spread his arms wrapping one arm around Silice and the other around Andre he commenced to carry them under his arms as he entered a all out sprint. “I may have only just pissed it off… I wouldn’t… advise… stopping should I fall.”

Nathan stared wide out at the monster though he overcame his fear with pride and duty alone. He put his map away and moved forward with a permafrost held tightly in hand from his pouch he brought it to his lips and breathed a thick misted breath to seal the cracks with ice. “Run if you value your lives! I’ll hold the fey off for as long as I can.” He said carefully moving over were the creature was he moved down the hallway and prepared his most potent spell… Fireball. Though he had to wait till everyone was through… it wasn’t safe to aim towards allies after all.

Why...food...try...? Mellonia stared(if such a term could be used for a being lacking eyes) at the fleeing party with intense interest, particularly at the mage. His fear was the most palpable and the most delectable by far, a stark contrast with the half-breed...it was safe to assume that he at least had a basic grasp of what he was dealing with. That was not a problem, for the sword-wielder was the greatest key in breaking the barrier between Mellonia and her prey. When his sword clashed against the crack in the glossy floor, a large swathe of glass broke away, sinking into the depths below. Strange...human...giving...opening...

Centuries ago when the bazaar floor was constructed, the enchantment to capture thieves was bound into the ground. Those with guilt on their minds would perceive the floor as a transparent surface, able to see their doom within. Mellonia would only be able to snatch them up and take them down into the abyss if they displayed fear of her presence. Although strange and babaric in a sense, this allowed the most bold and fearless miscreants to survive while weeding out the weak. The mad king would then recruit these master criminals into his fold-

No...enough...memories...useless... her prison temporarily shattered, the aqua-giant reached her arm through the gap. Icurus had fallen back to play rear guard, his weapon drawn and revolving in a deadly blur of steel. Mellonia pulled her head and shoulders up through the widening gap and flicked the reptile-man's armament away without even flinching. She proceeded to grasp the little man and squeeze for a moment before immediately releasing Icurus. The ranger lay there, twitching and stunned as Mellonia pulled the rest of her glistening form from the water and began her pursuit.

"Unhand me!" as soon as he felt an arm enclosing his waist Andre sped up his pace. By no means a sheltered individual, the duke had more than his fair share of adventuring experience and physical aptitude. He easily kept pace with the manic swordsman and was angered that Akir thought his 'help' would even be remotely needed. Silice shrugged off Akir's assistance with no small amount of indignity of her own, falling into step alongside her lord once more. The assistant cast a glance behind her and paled at the sight.

Lumbering down the hallway with awkward grace, the great pale giant was gaining on the group faster than one would think possible even with her longer strides. Behind her the floor seemed to reform, repairing itself everywhere except around the stunned Icurus. Under the drakian the floor split once more to admit him into it's cold waters, instantly bringing itself back together as if he had never been there.

Already panting from the rapid sprint(more from fear than anything) Andre moved his hands in a series of rapid gestures that would invoke another spell from his own arsenal. The first was a lash of blue electricity that made the pale giant shudder and gasp momentarily, but did little else to halt it's advance. The second, more elaborate spell was invoked with a flourish and the crushing of a hollow glass marble. With a loud creaking sound the floor itself rose and shaped into a wall the covered the hallway perfectly from top to bottom.

Andre and Silice slowed down, turning back to observe the great glass wall between the creature and themselves. Mellonia was frowning and probing the barrier for a long while while the group caught their breath.

"Let us...take a moment to grieve for our fallen companion." Andre wheezed and glanced at his construction. He feared it would not hold for long at first, but his overwhelming faith in his own skill kept Mellonia at bay for the moment. It was then that the aqua-giant suddenly oriented on Gwendolyn and flashed a wide smile, uttering one, shaky syllable: "Cousin..."

With that Mellonia disappeared beneath the glass once more, causing the hairs on the back of the party's necks to raise once again. For the first time since the morning, Silice deigned to speak. "We should run."

Andre found that he could not disagree. They were almost out of the bazaar if his guess was correct...

When the drakian brought his weapons to bare, Sek growled and began to mirror the movement. He stopped dead and turned on the ball of his foot when Icurus went down faster than a drunken halfling at the end of the night. With his long strides and great endurance, the half-orc kept pace with the thief, the bodyguard and the oddly physical mage with ease. Despite the gravity of the situation a smile ghosted over his features for a moment when he noticed his newfound friend slowing down. During their frantic flight down the seemingly never ending corridor Sek glanced back several times. He caught glimpses of the pale giantess gaining on them, much closer each time he turned to check.

Three times now he considered drawing steel and taking the fight to the creature that was going to overrun them, but the thought of suffering the same fate as the drakian did not set well with Sek. The chances of his 'allies' staying behind to assist him helped his choice immensely. Instead, he opted for an alternative method. Uruvos, Lord of Force and King of Battle...I swear I will carve your symbol upon the grounds of the next hundred battles I have should you allow me to survive this encounter. Thanks for listening.

When Andre finally devised a way to halt the giantess's advance, Sek heaved a sigh of relief and doubled over with his hands on his knees to try and calm the blood pounding in his head. When that had settled, he stood erect and glared at Andre with such abruptness that the movement seemed unnatural. "Hellion! What in the Nine Circles have you gotten us into?!" the half orc waved a hand at the glass wall and the creature behind it, "Not even one level in and we have one member MIA and another--and I assume this is a safe bet, dead? We need to find another way back-"

Where did it go? Sek wheeled around and bent his knees slightly, his entire body tensed like a the drawn string of a bow. He had seen nothing more than a sudden flash of white movement out of the corner of his eye, presumably the giant disappearing. Could it move so freely within it's prison? If so... "I suspect we are dealing with a Virtue; A being from a plane parallel to our own that grows in power as creatures in proximity to it experience negative sensations, primarily fear. It views us as intruders, thieves or something similar and is bound by whomever summoned it. Swordsman. Damage it's prison voluntarily and you will only hasten it's release." Sek fixed Akir with a level gaze. "Do it again and I will shove you into the abyss myself.

"As for the rest of you, calm yourselves. The more you 'feel', the greater it's power over us becomes." when Silice bade that they run, Sek found that he had no further words of wisdom to spout. "Such fun is a run, like a joke with no pun..."

Fan-bloody-tastic. Here she was, underground and running for her life, only for the thing she was running from to get up and out of its... tank and follow them. Because if there was one thing Gwen needed, it was more danger in her life. Spy missions and conniving comrades were not enough, apparently, and neither was simply wandering around in a foreign location with at least one person who probably wasn't going to let her actually get out alive, much less share the loot (that one being Hellion, and probably his little bodyguard too).

No no, surely just a boatload more mortal peril would do, she thought to herself. She wasn't exactly sure what was up with the swordsman, because the guy's brain seemed to be working at half-capacity. Was she faster than their employer? Yes. Was that enough to prompt her to try manhandling him? No it most certainly was not. Sure, the guy was attractive, but people liked personal space. And having control over themselves. And surviving. "You know," she remarked to the half-orc next to her, "I think I'm going to take you up on that offer of yours."

The group slowed to a stop, the faceless creature on the other side of what appeared to be a clear barrier. For some reason, it seemed to focus on Gwen for a moment, and at its peculiar utterance, she blinked. Cousin? "You've gotta be kidding me," she deadpanned. Of all the aqueous species she knew about (which was quite a few), she'd never heard of anything that looked quite like that. At around this time, Sek pointed out that it was probably feeding off their fear, and she shrugged. Deaden fear. She could do that. Not completely, but enough so that it was functionally irrelevant. That was generally how she went about life anyway.

Out loud, she was considerably more skeptical. "Pretend giant faceless monstrosity didn't just eat Scaly and doesn't want to eat us and never talked to me in that creepy voice. Gotcha." She gave a halfhearted grin, though, enough to show she understood. The creature seemed to disappear from their sight, and the diminutive one prudently suggested they resume the fleeing, so she was off at a lope again.

"Oh, hey, Duke Hellion. If that thing thinks it's related to me, it's got an affinity towards water," she pointed out. Mages liked elemental Rochambeau stuff, right? What bothered her was that she had not immediately sensed as much. It must be corrupted beyond reason for that to be the case. She'd observed that clean water was easier to sense, and she had some ability to purify the dirtier stuff, but to not be able to figure it out? Either she was slipping considerably, which was an alarming thought, or that was some damn unholy water.

Something occurred to Gwen as they sped down the passageway: did Hellion even know where they were going anymore? It wasn't like 'frantic speed' was helpful in a map-studying situation. What if they were headed towards some kind of dead end? That'd be rich.

Akir stopped when the rest of the party did. His breath was only slightly heavy for a matter of seconds before he calmly inhaled… and exhaled… inhaled… and exhaled… Once he had caught his breath he looked over to where the monster had vanished. “You know if they’re more beasts such as that I may get entertainment from this trip… and die in glorious combat…

Dying… wasn’t it monstrous to not care about the fallen dragon creature… because he simply couldn’t. How human could one be if they knew the mage was lying about the thief but did not bother to speak of it or truly waste effort in questioning it. Of all the things to fear… becoming a monster… when you already are, Is the worst. He continued along quietly contemplating what was happening and what needed to be done. “We best get out of this tunnel before it decides to come back…”

Nathan was breath was ragged as he finally caught up with his team. “What… the hell was that thing. I’ve not seen such a fiend in any of my research books. Nor have I heard tales of such a thing… if we linger we may find where she broke out of impassable… we need to find our way around… research what we can on this level and find some proper means to fight what may be to come!.”

Re: [OOC] Delve

Your joking right? Gestalt is now the Jelly…

Re: [OOC] Delve

>.>;....Gestalt has told me to inform those of you who were still in this thing, that he has lost interest in the whole roleplay scene and won't be continuing.

A bit late though...

Re: [OOC] Delve

I'm assuming Silver isn't going to post again, so I shall have the next installment up sometime tommorow after work.

Re: [OOC] Delve

I was waiting for you? Should I just post now? (>_0)

EDIT: Posted.

Re: [OOC] Delve

:I where are you doodz?! Post darn you!

Re: [OOC] Delve

Well, I was kinda waiting for another post but me post within the next 24 hours I s'pose....

Re: [OOC] Delve

Sorry for the late response, real life obligations. By that, I mean I completely blew this off to hang out with friends last night/today.

Blame Smith. We all do anyway....but this time, it's actually his fault.

I'm typing up a post now.

Re: [OOC] Delve

Wait… what did I do that makes Andre want to kill Akir? The carrying him? Seeing as he started running before Akir did that would mean Andre was ahead with Silice in the way not to mention it was a quick stab… Andre couldn’t see that! No way.

Re: [OOC] Delve

I will try my bestest to post by tomorrow night, depending on if I get sewing done on time. If I dont post by then, I will on Tuesday night for sure!

Re: [OOC] Delve

Don't misunderestimate him. He's taken care of humano....humusa....them things, before.

Poooooooooost D: so boooooooooored. I'm caught up with all my RP obligations for the first time in months and now life holds no meaning for me--OOH! Mass Effect<33

Re: [OOC] Delve

Wow, your own lizard man? That's a big responsibility, you know. *hefts person-sized book onto table* I recommend this, "The care and feeding of humanoid reptiles." They are ever so sensitive.

Re: [OOC] Delve

Wow. You were right Raven, that was not smart. You did just give me reason to have Andre kill your swordsman, so it's not all bad though. Oh, wait...

Silver, I understand your obligations and whatnot, so don't sweat it. I shall be posting tonight if nobody else has more to add.

EDIT: Was anyone else aware that the adoption system was working? I just abducted Icurus...I have a lizard man of my very own!

Re: [OOC] Delve

I was waiting for others to post... as Akir is about to do something probably not to intelligent. Though I will be posting soon.

Re: [OOC] Delve

:D I posted! Take THAT Kiku!

*running off to post in Revvie and waves at Silver*

PALADIN-GOODNESS FOR ALL!!

Re: [OOC] Delve

Yeah, I'm still here. I have a post in mind, but I'm going to an anime convention this weekend and haven't even finished half of my costume. Been sewing like crazy. Sorry for the trouble.

Re: [OOC] Delve

Well, see, you're making a fundamental assumption there that I'm human.

Okay Smith. Whatever you say dude. Just know... if you fail, I will make a grenade launcher out of smug satisfaction. There's no blocking that business.

Re: [OOC] Delve

*creates a tower shield out of sudden drive to post in roleplays and deflects said ennui's with a pointed lack of disinterest*

Bam. FROM THIS DAY FORTH, I REFUSE TO ALLOW KIKU THE SATISFACTION OF SAYING....KNOWING, THAT I'M A FLAKE WITH POSTS! CONSISTENCY FOR ALL!

And Gestalt. t('.'t) right there buddy. That's for you.

Re: [OOC] Delve

Point taken. I shaint be an enable anymore. Nor will I use the word "shaint", due to the fact I have most likely mispelled it.

Also, I was unaware that humans had unlocked the ability to manifest emotions as physical objects...I should give that a try.

Re: [OOC] Delve

*Forms daggers of concentrated scorn and a few more of ennui and throws them at Smith.*

You're horrible. I post in your shtuff.

Don't listen to his excuses, Gestalt. He just comes up with more if you do.

Re: [OOC] Delve

Hm. The lizard-man left? That is unfortunate. What about Silver? Stll here?

Smith needs to post Asap...lazy bastard. Just because he lost cable for a few days and went on another Mass Effect binge does not excuse tardiness. Well, maybe the first one...
