Introduction

Image
Grover Park, Maryland.
July 21st, 1981.
7 hours ago, at 0500 July 21, 1981, the body of 17-year-old Manolo "Manny" Restrepo was found by a jogger on the banks of Nestor Creek after being reported missing at 0143 July 21. The details are as follows.

ImageImage
A quiet, idyllic suburb of Washington, D.C., Grover Park was the perfect place for Ambassador Restrepo of Colombia to live with his family during his tenure in the United States. Grover Park boasts a low crime rate, beautiful scenery, and the convenient amenities of a small-to-moderate city, all within a reasonable commute to the Capital City.

But tragedy struck in July of 1981, when the Ambassador's son Manny was murdered. His body was dumped in Nestor Creek, still wearing the same clothes he wore to the pool party the day before. Naturally, suspicion fell on the attendees of the party, but Manny's friends have their own suspects.

Image
Birds of a feather flock together. That's what they say, and for these friends, it is absolutely true. They know each other's deepest secrets, the darkest shames no one else knows. They've built their friendships on shared secrecy, and have become highly influential in the school despite--or perhaps because of--their penchant for deceit.

These six students--from sixteen to eighteen--have carefully crafted reputations hiding everything from their sexualities--like Manny--to their economic status to their past misdeeds. Secrets are overlapping, but one things for sure: they're in this together. They know for a fact that none of them killed their de facto leader.
Now more than anything they are searching for answers.

Secret: Manny hid his homosexuality from his wealthy, socially prominent, strictly Roman-Catholic family.

Manny was always the life of the party. He was the undisputed king of Grover Prep and the perfect son to his important parents. He was always a good kid, but he knew if he ever came out to his parents he would be disowned. Or worse. His friends were the only people they knew for sure knew about his sexuality, besides past relationships. At the moment, their best theory is that someone found out and killed him for it.

Every student of Grover Park Preparatory Academy who attended the party, thrown by a member of Manny's clique, is a suspect to the police, but a few stick out in the minds of Manny's friends. They also have a couple other theories.
Image
Keith Derringer
Captain of the football team, Keith views himself as the rightful king of Grover Prep. The only problem? No one actually likes him. Being handsome and athletic only gets you so far, and Keith was tired of always falling short of Manny.
Image
Lori Johnston
Derringer's girlfriend and the head cheerleader of Grover Prep, Lori has dreams of being the it couple in town. Her goals to take over the school rival even her boyfriend's, and in her mind Manny and his friends are the only things standing in her way. Cutting off the head of the snake could have been her way of getting on top.
Image
Ambassador Rogelio Restrepo
Despite his stellar reputation, Rogelio Restrepo is not always a calm and loving father, and Manny's friends know that. He's a strict, devout Roman Catholic, and Manny's sexuality would not have been tolerated at all had he found out.
SECTION TO BE CONTINUED

The Rules

1. Grammar is very important to me. I'm not gonna mind a typo or two or putting in vernacular or whatever, but if you write like a little kid, it will very much bother me. This is pretty much the only hard and fast rule beyond the typical. Who gives a fuck about an Oxford Comma? Me.

2. Please reserve in the OOC. I would like you to give me a gender, a faceclaim, and a first name or nickname just so I can fill out the front page a bit as soon as possible, but the only thing I REQUIRE is gender.

3. This roleplay is centered around human rights, LGBTQ+ rights, and attitudes surrounding LGBTQ+ people in 1981. If you have a problem with this, do not sign up. Certain characters, mostly NPCs will display bigoted attitudes and etc., but it is unacceptable in OOC I'm still deciding whether or not to use period-appropriate language on these issues, but I'm leaning toward no in order to make it less upsetting and more accessible to everyone.

4. We don't live in 1981, and faceclaims dressed like they do are not going to be easy to find. It's not required or even preferred that you use an 80s-looking FC. If you find one, fantastic, but it really doesn't matter as long as your character is good.

5. This isn't really a rule, but I want you to be as involved in the plot as I am. I have a solid idea on how it ends (yes, I've picked a killer), but if you have ideas (beginning, middle, or end), feel free to discuss them in the OOC or PM me. I would absolutely love that.

Following the discovery of Manolo "Manny" Restrepo's body on the banks of Nestor Creek, a federal investigation has been launched, with help from local law enforcement. Working in tangent with Detective David Feely of Grover Park Police Department, the green Agent Daisy Rew has begun the questioning with six of Restrepo's closest friends.

Restrepo's last confirmed location was at a pool party held at the home of a classmate at Grover Park Preparatory Academy, Lori Johnston. The events following his departure from the party are currently unknown, and his parents deny seeing himImage at all since 1400 hours that day, when he left the residence to meet his friends at Clover Diner.

Restrepo was badly beaten, with a broken zygomatic bone, a fractured wrist, and multiple lacerations and contusions. His shoes were found bloody and dirty on Angel Bridge, a high bridge on an out-of-the-way footpath above the deepest part of Nestor Creek. As it is not a widely known area, knowledge of the bridge may lead toward the killer, although all of Restrepo's friends were aware of it.

Motive is unclear at this point in the investigation.

It has only been hours since Restrepo's body was discovered, and much of the evidence has yet to unfold.

Jack sat in the orange plastic chair, his head in his hands and his mom sitting beside him silently, waiting for the investigators to call him in the room. His head pulsed with a hangover from the party, and the fluorescent lights drilled their way into his skull. The receptionist hammered the keys of the typewriter as hard as she could, popping the bubblegum she'd been chewing the whole time. The sounds felt like arrows. His stomach lurched at the though of any kind of food.

The door of the interrogation room groaned as it opened to a brown-haired woman in a black pantsuit, the sleeves of her blazer cuffed just below her elbows and a gun in a holster on her hip. An FBI badge hung against her crisp white dress shirt on a chain around her neck.

"Jack Jacobs," she called. Her voice turned up at the end with a hint of question. "Why don't you come in here so we can talk."

Jack stood. Walking toward the room felt like facing a firing squad. He couldn't tell if everyone was actually watching him or it was just his imagination. His mom stood to follow him, but the agent stopped her.

"Mrs. Jacobs," she said, "we'd like to speak to him alone first, if that's alright with you." It was the absolute last thing Jack wanted, but he couldn't find a way to ask his mom to come with. The words wouldn't come out.

The agent shut the door behind them. There was a man, thin, pale, and dark-haired, already sitting at the metal table poring over what was almost certainly Manny's case file in a manila folder. The agent's hand on Jack's shoulder lead him to a chair opposite the man. The clock on the wall ticked far too loudly, and the chair was too cold.

"Jack, right?" the man asked, and Jack nodded. "I'm Detective Feely. This is Agent Rew." He gestured to the agent, who leaned against the wall with her arms crossed. "We just want to ask you a few questions about your friend Manolo Restrepo."

"Manny," Jack corrected.

"How long have you known each other?" Feely asked.

Jack swallowed around the lump in his throat. "About four years."

"When did you see him last?"

Jack hesitated. His heart was in his throat, but he could feel it thump in his whole body. "Is Manny okay?" he asked. "No one told us anything."

Detective Feely's mouth crumpled into a scowl, and he turned to look at Agent Rew behind him. She straightened away from the wall, her eyes narrowing at Jack as if he were a puzzle she was trying to put together. She nodded at Feely, who looked back at Jack.

"I'm sorry, Jack," he said softly. "Manny's body was found this morning."

Jack felt the color drain from his face. He shot up from the chair to find the metal trash can in the corner of the concrete room, and his stomach emptied itself of the dry toast he'd forced himself to eat earlier.

Jack couldn't look at his friends as his mom lead him by the arm out of the police station and to the car. He didn't complain when he felt her fingers dig into his bones. Agent Rew called in the next person.

Robin had never been much of a party animal. Sure, she went out with her friends, but it didn't massively appeal to her, and she always kept herself in control. And she sure as hell never ended up in a police station the morning after. And yet, here she was. Her mom hadn't said much- just that she'd gotten a call, asking Robin to come in. And even if she hadn't been hung over, she hadn't managed to eat much after that.

Something had happened at the party. She could tell just from the few pale faces in the waiting room, all of them with their parents. Nobody was talking. It was nearly silent, the only sound the receptionist's clacking on the keyboard and the popping of gum. Robin's mom squeezed Robin's hand as Jack was called into the room. It seemed like an eternity before he emerged. And when he did, he wasn't making eye contact, and his mom looked like she had a death grip on his arm.

A woman emerged, pretty and professional looking. And with a badge marking her as something much more important than their own. "Robin Thomson?" She said. Robin stood, as did her mom. "Mrs. Thomson, we'd prefer to speak to Robin alone, if you don't mind." Robin squeezed her hand. "I'll be fine, mom," she said softly.

Robin knew something was up when she was led into the interrogation room. She vaguely recognised the man- he was local, if she remembered right. They introduced themselves as Agent Rew and Detective Feely.

"Robin, you were at the party, right?" Detective Feely asked. "Yeah, me and all my friends were. What happened? Is everyone okay?" She asked. "Manolo Restrepo was among those friends, correct?" Agent Rew asked. "Yeah, we've been friends for a few years, since we both started high school really." And then it sank in. "Did something happen to Manny? Is he okay? What happened? They hesitated, and they looked at each other.

"There was a body found in the river at Angel Creek this morning," Agent Rew said.
"Manny."
"I'm sorry, Robin."

They asked her more questions. Robin couldn't remember them by the time she left. Manny is dead. Her mom was talking to her, but Robin was barely responding. She couldn't.

Melanie let out a sigh as she watched both Jack and Robin enter the private investigation room with one of the detectives. They both exited the room looking like shells of people and it made Mel all the more anxious. Not to mention the fact that her dad was sitting right next to her stone cold. On the way to the station he had been very blunt with her. If she ended up being in trouble, she would be in a deep amount of trouble at home as well. Who knows if she would ever see her classmates again. She started to pick at the dry skin around her thumbnail, a habit she developed after her cooldown from speed. The party had been rough last night and this day didn't seem like it was going to be any better.

Her heart sunk as she heard her name slip out of the mouth of the female detective she had seen before. They locked eyes as Melanie slowly stood up, her father remained seated with his eyes fixed on the clock that hung in the room. "Don't keep the detective waiting Mel." She swallowed and walked over to the room where the woman offered her a seat.

"We would like to speak to you privately for a moment if that is alright with you, we will bring in your Father shortly. I am detective Rew and this is my partner Feely." The man nodded, his eyes far less reassuring than detective Rew's. Melanie could only manage curt replies as the detectives asked her a serious of questions about the party the night before. All she could think about was if she had gotten busted for drug use for whatever reason. It didn't even register in her mind that detectives don't usually handle teenage drug use as that wasn't their first concern. It wasn't until they mentioned Manny that she realized something far worse had happened.

"W-Where is Manny? Is he missing?" Various thoughts began to rush through her head as she panicked about her friend's whereabouts. She grabbed her elbows with opposite hands as a way to cradle herself for comfort. Detective Rew looked slightly distraught as if telling children the news was beginning to take a toll on her. "Melanie, I'm sorry to inform you that Manolo has been found dead." Immediately a hand shot to cover her agape mouth. Her body instantly began shaking as tears filled her eyes. She shook her head as if to say it wasn't true. "Would you like us to bring in your father for a moment? We still have a few more questions we need to ask." Melanie did not respond, she sat there frozen as tears streamed down her face. Her body beginning to ache from the great emotional pain that swept over her.

Thankfully the questions flew by fast as her dad did most of the talking for her. It seemed to be the first time since her mother's death that her dad was showing true affection and understanding. She rested her head into his chest as he responded to yes and no questions, knowing the answer through a hand squeeze from Melanie. The tears had been replaced with an overwhelming emptiness and shock inside her. Once they were finally allowed to leave, Melanie remained in the warm embrace of her father to the car. She finally understood Jack and Robin's dismay.

The twins sat there in the police station exchanging the odd worried glance at one another. They sat in the police station and uncomfortable yet familiar weight stewing in the pit of their stomachs, the weight far heavier on Leon than his sister. This has happened before, they both realized. Nothing good has ever come of either of the twins being called to to places like this. The news was never good. But for Leon at least it wasn't the same as before, as he looked around the station he saw his friends and even the face of his father most of them looking rather worried themselves.

Though Leon tried to appear calm, his nerves were fraying inward but the only sign of this was the rhythmic, impatient tapping of his foot, all while Leanna sat there beside him, worry visibly wracking her face. As the others were called in and slowly came back out, their faces a mixture of horror and pure grief, Leon's composure came close to cracking, forcing his sister to pace a steadying hand on his knee. It felt like an eternity before one of their names were called.

"Leanna Louis" Called the female detective. Leanna moved to approach with her brother right on the girls heels. The detective raised a hand, a dismissive gesture they both were sure. "Sorry but we would like to speak wi-"The words died on the woman's lips as Leon spoke up loud enough to disrupt her train of thought not even bothering to let her finish.

"Come on. She's my sister, just look at her. She's nervous and scared and honestly I don't think you can blame her." Instantly Leanna knew what her brother was doing and played up the act. Admittedly she was nervous and worried even if she'd never say that right now but she didn't have to look nervous unless she wanted to, and now she very much wanted to. Her knees went limp and she began to shake lightly, letting out a low sounding please was what finally completed the image. Leon leaned closer to the woman before speaking once more."We just saw three of our best friends walk out of of here like they saw a ghost and you need to question me anyway right? Please just let me sit in with you guys or something?" With a sigh the woman sighed a relenting sigh as she escorted the pair into the room. The two exchanged a small smile for the small single victory of the night.

When they were brought before the other detective, they quickly took a seat and glanced once more at one another. Leanna asked the only question she could before either detective could utter a word. The only question that made any sense, a perceptive sort of concern leaked off her lips as she spoke. "What happened? Is everything okay? Manny? What happened to Manny, he's the only one not here. Is he still missing or...?" She trailed off not really wanting the answer. But Leanna was the smart one, the others looked devastated, and Manny had been missing for some time. Putting two and two together resulted in a grim thought, one she didn't want to entertain but saw plainly on the male detective's face. "I'm sorry you two but Manolo's body was found earlier today, murdered it seems."

With those words two hearts sank at once, but one sank deeper and further. Leon was shaking now his fists curled tightly into a ball "That's impossible! Who would ever want to hurt Manny? Everyone loved him and it's not like he's ever hurt anyone! Why someone ever wanna do that?" Leon's voice was desperate, a departure from any mask's he had bothered to wear moments before, his eyes were vulnerable and it took Leanna's presence once more, as well as her own genuinely distraught face to snap the boy out of it. She stared at her brother the answer clearly sitting at the forefront of her mind.Someone hurt Manny for the same reason they would want to hurt her brother and most of her friends. She didn't have to fake worry with a thought like that resting in her skull.

The interview passed by almost in a blur, somehow the twins had managed to answer the questions honestly but neither were truly there in the moment. As they walked out of the room Leon couldn't bear to look at his friedns, he looked like tears were going to crawl down his face at any moment, stopped only by Leanna gripping his arm, and letting out faint sobs of her own. The tears weren't real, she was never very good at shedding real tears, but she could always cry on command. The sobs sent Leon reeling back as he caught himself. Not here. He couldn't cry here, instead he clenched his fists in anger the only emotion he knew he was really allowed to bear openly. Without a word the twins looked at their father than retreated out the station into he car.

Tap. Tap. Tap Tap. Michael's leg wouldn't stop bouncing nervously against the cool tile of the police station. He jerked up abruptly as his mother placed a hand on his leg, trying to stop him. "Mike honey, calm down. Some kids probably just had something illegal at the party and the police are just wanting to get to the bottom of it". He knew it was worse than that. He could tell the way each of his friends shifted uncomfortably in their chairs while waiting to be called into interrogation, and their tear-stained faces walking out.

Manny.

It had to be about Manny. He had been with all of them at the party but after a while Mike had lost track of him. He hadn't thought much about the fate of his friend until the phone had rang requesting him to come up to the police station.

"Michael Doyle" A woman, the same that had called the others in now called his name. He was the last one. He got up slowly, and shakily from the plastic seat and gave on last hesitant glance to his mother before following the woman inside the room. It was small and bright, making him feel even more trapped than he already was.

He blinked a couple times, his eyes adjusting to the light as he stared at the man across from him, a scary, stern looking man. "Mr. Doyle, where were you last night around the hours of 10pm to 3am?" Michael shifted in his seat, he wasn't nervous about the questions but there was something the officers weren't getting to. "I was at a party with my friends for most of the night, but I went home around 12. Why? Is something wrong?"
The officer completely ignored his question, yet continued with his. "You would consider yourself to be 'good' friends with Manolo Restrepo?" Michael nodded his head, "Yeah Manny and I have always been - " The officer cut him off abruptly with another question. "Have you and Manny ever gotten into any arguments?" "Well, yeah but - " "Has any of your fights ever escalated?" A disgusted look came over Michael's face as he shook his head in disdain. "What? No, I love Manny. What does this have to do with him?" The officer paused for a moment, taking the time to observe Michael before taking a deep breath, "Manolo was found dead in Angel Creek this morning".

It was like Michael had just fallen through the floor. He felt weightless, confused, angry, empty. "W-what?" His voice cracked slightly, as he clenched the arms of the chair so hard his knuckles turned white. "We are deeply sorry for your loss, but at this moment we need to figure out anything we can so we can help bring him justice". Michael just nodded, subconsciously, he fully wasn't there. He nodded his head yes or no to the proceeding questions, until the officers got the point and released him, telling him to call back if he thought of anything.

He walked calmly out of the room, his mother right there to grab his hand as he suddenly realized it was shaking uncontrollably. "Honey? ... Michael darling, is everything alright?" He just shook his head in response, and his mother lead him carefully out of the station. As soon as they walked out of the station he felt his breath start to hitch in his throat, and the stinging of tears at his eyes. It suddenly became harder to breath, as Michael frantically ripped open the door of his mom's car and grabbed his inhaler sitting in the cupholder with shaky hands. "Michael! What is wrong?" his mother exclaimed from the driver's seat as he took a large inhale from the inhaler.

And exhaled with a huge sob. "Oh god, Michael. Come here" And his mom wrapped him in her arms in the car, brushing his hair affectionately as he cried into her arms.

The wind cooled and scraped at the scrubbed-raw skin under Jack's eyes as he peddled. The tears had barely come out, as if he didn't quite believe that Manny was gone. They hadn't shown him he body, just a couple of Polaroids of his shoes—the same red chucks he always wore—bloody and abandoned on Angel Bridge and scraps of fabric from the shirt he'd been wearing when Jack saw him last clinging to the chain link fence meant to keep people from falling off into Nestor Creek below.

A lot of good that did, Jack thought, pushing his bike harder up the little hill that separated North Grover from Main Street. He lived the closest to Clover Diner—it was just on the northernmost end of Main Street—but he was also the farthest removed from the rest of town. Grover Park was full of the upper middle class, with the exception of two neighborhoods. North Grover, where Jack lived, was the poorest neighborhood in town, populated mostly by the working class people that provided the town with its manual labor and service workers. Shady Grove, Manny's neighborhood, was on the exact opposite side of town, with manicured lawns and huge mansions where a regular family could live in the same house and not see each other for a week.

The distance never used to make a difference to Jack, even before Manny got his car for his sixteenth birthday. He'd been driving them to school since then, but before that his chauffeur had taken them. Grover Park wasn't that big anyway. It didn't even take an hour to ride across the town and back on his bike.

Jack chained his bike up to the rack in front of Clover and went in, the bell chiming above his head as he pushed the door open. He made a beeline for the biggest booth they had, waiting for him in the back as if it had a reserved sign on it. For how often they came there, it might as well have. Everyone there knew who the table belonged to. He slid into the middle seat—always his spot, since he always got there first.

Colette, the waitress and Jack's neighbor, smiled at him as she set out seven menus. She didn't say anything, and neither did he. He just watched the door, waiting for his friends to show up. His chest ached hollowly, as if everything had been scooped out and put in the freezer for later.

Keith Derringer and Lori Johnston glared openly at him as they left, but he ignored them. He checked his watch.

It was a long silent ride back home. Tear after tear dripped down her cheeks into her lap. One might have assumed that it had rained on her at this point. She couldn't remember crying this hard immediately when she was told her mom had passed. At that time it just wouldn't sink in, but for some reason, this time, it felt more real than anything. Her father had to leave for work after dropping her off back at home, he said it was an emergency and he couldn't take the day off as much as he wanted. Melanie was far from shocked as this was the usual. The house was empty and cold. Nothing sounded better than a cozy hot chocolate and a whopping slice of pity pie.

The car ride to Clover diner was just the same. When she pulled into the parking lot, she couldn't even remember the trip there. It was as if she had simply teleported. Before leaving, she had shimmied on a loose black sweater to keep warm in the dreary weather. Stepping into the diner she was greeted with smiling faces which she could only ignore. Her eyes immediately trained on Jack in the back which started the waterworks once again. She knew how close Manny and Jack were, and she could only imagine how he was feeling right this moment.

As she walked up to their booth, she scooted into the seat to the right of Jack. She gave him a long look before resting her head on his shoulder. Any kind of warmth was of importance at this moment, as everything just felt chilling. She hoarsely whispered,
"What do we do?" She desired hope, or maybe just a voice other than her dad's.
