ImageImageWaves caressed the wooden hull of the ship, water lapping against the sides as the boat rocked back and forth on the calm seas. The sky was the same bright blue as the water, meeting at the horizon and going on as far as the eye could see. With not a cloud in the sky nor a gust of wind, the boat could go in neither direction. It was bad luck, to be still for so long, it could draw monsters to your ship after all. On board were forms huddled together, their legs tied, their mouths stuffed with cloth so as to keep from crying out.

"It's bad luck to have a lady on board." The Captain was saying, his lips spread thin, as though he was at his wits end. Their ship had been still for days, their food stores were beginning to run low. The women of the ship quivered with fear, praying to whatever deity they believed in. One by one they were cast off, unable to swim with their limbs bound, the cloth in their mouths quickly soaking up liquid. They weren't monsters, they did have hearts.
If luck were a lady, surely she would have never dreamed of this fate for her kind.

Image

ImageSlowly, gently, the water hugged them, carrying them down into the darkness of the depths. Panic, movement and then silence. Bubbles surrounded bodies, filling their lungs with air until they could breathe once more, bound legs turning into a tail that could kick and with powerful strokes carry them away from the ship that had so easily rid themselves of its female passengers.

Could such a thing be? After all, there are no such things as mermaids and yet, here they are, tails swishing, gills breathing, heart beating. The gentle lull of the ocean carries them forward to an island where others of their kind reside, cast the same hand by fate and tricked by those they had trusted. Together they lived, their home half sunken, ruled by the first of the mermaids. They burn with passion, their mission revenge, drowning sailors who grow too close to their home. Outsiders were not welcomed, those who came too close to the island met an untimely end.

Image

ImageEvery night, together they sit on their half sunken island, some perching on broken masts and overturned hulls and underneath the light of the moon their voices fill the sky, calling sailors to their deaths. It is on a night just like this that a very strange happenstance occurs. Their leader, the Mother of all Mermaids, has been captured. Four sailors who survived their call, bent on revenge, stole her away while she was sleeping. They wished to overtake the island, to open it up to all humans and revel that their inane jabber was not insanity after all. They want to prove to the world that women with voices like stars and tails that shine like the moon exist.

As more humans begin to arrive on the island in order to cage mermaids up, they will fight back against humanity. Their battle has only just begun.

Luis turned the lights back on while Asther cleaned the examination table of Ariel's throw up, gently lifting the body up and placing it on the ground. Hazuki guided her to the table, helping her onto it. "Shower," Reyna coughed, her voice scratchy from misuse. "Don't try to speak," Luis warned, coming over to evaluate her. He ran his fingers along various places, putting something cold and metal on her chest. Reyna coughed, feeling sick, as though she had a head cold. There was water in her ears and her eyes were not adjusting to the light. Luis waved his hand in front of her face, he made a rude gesture, but Reyna did not react. "Well, in summary, you're blind." Reyna groaned, she felt terribly lost, which was normal considering she was blind. "Why?" He ran his hands along the glands in her neck, testing things out there. "These burn marks aren't pretty either, I surmise it's from the electric shock therapy, must have hit something in the brain that turned off the light switch." He tapped her head with his closed fist gently, then waved his hand in front of her face, but everything remained dark.

"Ariel?" Reyna asked, surprising everyone. "Where... is... she?" Reyna coughed, someone handed her a cup of water. She drank it down quickly, spilling water all down her front but it didn't matter because she was naked. "Can feel... Wolfe... staring," Wolfe barked out laughter. "A trained assassin to the core," the glass of water was replaced with a second, Reyna drank down this one too. "Ariel is dead," Hazuki admitted softly. "She died when we woke you up." Reyna was quiet for a moment, "bring... to... Ogy." They got the message, Luis let out a sigh of disappointment. "I was hoping to keep the body." He admitted, wanting it for research purposes. "But Reyna, she's dead. Ogygia can't revive dead people."

"Mermaid," Reyna corrected. "Not... dead." She gestured her head in the direction she believed the fish tank was in. They seemed to understand her now. "I mean... we could try, but why?" Reyna was quiet for a moment. "Scared to die," she said breathlessly and Hazuki nodded. "She doesn't want to live on Ogygia. She just wants to go back home, but I guess you already knew that." Reyna nodded this time, settling down somewhat. "Corona?" The atmosphere in the room dropped ten degrees. "Corona doesn't want to see you," Wolfe said at last, the one to break the silence. "She doesn't want to see anyone ever again." Hazuki stepped out to make a phone call, giving Shannon an update. Shannon was in the sewers, searching for their friend, hopefully she could find Corona before it was too late.

They dragged in an empty tank, Luis prepared Ariel's body, using a life support system to restart her heart. She kept her eyes closed of course and it was with this in mind that they plunged the body into the tank, filling it up with gel. Reyna winced at the sound, her ears quite sensitive. "I'll... find... Coro," Reyna stood, almost walking right into Wolfe. Hazuki and Asther grabbed her by the shoulders, dragging her back a few feet. A naked blind Reyna+Wolfe=bad idea. "You can't find anyone," Hope spoke at last. "You're blind Reyna, plus, you don't even know where you are." Reyna shook her head, this was the place she had grown up, she knew this house like the back of her hand. It was these people who didn't understand.

Well, if this was death, it really wasn't what Corona could have expected. Honestly, this was just entirely confusing in and of itself. The mermaid, back to her rightful and normal size, floated in this space between whatever the heck it was she was between. Nothing really made sense. Someone was there, and it was someone she hadn't spoken to in a very long time. "If it wasn't for you, none of this would have happened, Mother. Reyna and I, we were better off dead." The mother was there, as if trying to welcome her to the land of the dead, to the paradise where all the mermaids lived. Except... this wasn't a paradise, just a blank empty space in the middle of nowhere. "Oh, Corona, I understand your point of view."

Corona glared hard at the woman who pretended to be their benefactor, who pretended to be so nice and kind but was secretly a monster that doomed her and Reyna to horrible fates. "But you're misunderstanding something here." Corona raised an eyebrow menacingly. What exactly could she mean by this? "Are you saying Reyna wanted to be that pathetic shit abomination?" Mother smiled at her all gently and it made the mermaid feel disgusted in every sense of the word. "Stop! Stop lying, Reyna would never have wanted that! She was happy on the island!" Mother shook her head then and moved to try and cough Corona, to pat her head and pull her into a hug. Corona floated away, refusing the touch, eyes wide with wild hostility.

"Reyna was happy." Mother said in that gentle way of hers that made Corona want to tear out her throat here and now. "She was happy because she never had a family before." Corona hissed, she didn't want to hear this bullshit, Reyna was happy with her, there was nothing else about it! "We were her family, she didn't need humans!" The mermaid wanted to attack, and she would, if Mother kept saying horrible things, she would lunge right now! "Don't take that to mean she doesn't care for you. But you misunderstood her, Corona, you didn't know her heart's deepest desire." Corona had enough, she wasn't going to listen to this drivel. "Just shut up, I'm not listening anymore! Just take me to the dead place!"

Mother shook her head, because that was impossible. "I'm sorry, but my magic still exists within you. Even though you're a shell, there is still a chance that you can return to a mermaid." Corona froze and then she glowered. "What. What are you - no! No, I refuse! I have to die, Reyna doesn't need me anyways, so what does it even matter!" She couldn't go back to life, not after she finally died, she didn't want to live! "Please just let me die."
At this moment, Shannon had returned to the facility, tears staining the shell she was holding in her hands.

Ariel's body was no preserved in the tank, which, thankfully, was a small one about the size of a fish tank. Wolfe and Luis carried it together, putting it in the back of the car. Tower Agents were flooding the place, Imani and Bruskey waited for the team to come out with Reyna, a transport vehicle waiting to move them all. Doll and Christopher escorted them, all except Luis and Wolfe, one whom which worked for Seele, the other being a wanted fugitive. "Imani, Bruskey," Doll smirked upon seeing them. "This is Reyna," Christopher pulled up a picture on his phone so that they could see, he had taken a picture of the mermaid of course. Imani gasped, Reyna was standing between Asther and Hope, being guided and half carried by both of them. At first her walking had been fine, but halfway up the steps Reyna had collapsed, weak from getting up and into action too quickly.

"Surface?" Reyna asked with a shiver, she was wearing nothing but a blanket of course. "Yeah, we're up top," Asther smiled even though Reyna couldn't see it. "There's a van waiting to escort us back to the Tower Society, they have a few questions about the entire thing." Asther shook her head. "No, we're going straight to the port and back home!" Hazuki looked as though she was about to protest too. "Don't you think your friend should be seen by a proper Doctor?" Christopher asked, putting his phone away. "I don't think bleeding from the mouth is too common." Reyna swiped at the side of her mouth, she could feel that it was indeed wet. She licked it, her senses enhanced due to losing one. "Blood?" Hazuki hesitated. "I think we should Asther," Wolfe shuffled Hope into the van, they were hiding in there now, protecting Ariel's body. "We have our orders, we'll take the body back to the ship and the others will meet us there."

Reyna stumbled, Bruskey wrapped an arm around her waist, helping her into the van. "Here, sit here," he directed. They were driving in an ambulance, the sirens turning on to get them through traffic quickly. Reyna winced, "loud!" She placed her hands over her ears. "Sorry," Bruskey mumbled. The ambulance was surprisingly spacious. "Here, put your legs up here," Hazuki sat down on the edge of the stretcher, Asther was across from them. Doll and Christopher were sitting in the front while Bruskey and Imani sat in the back, watching over the three of them. "So, are all three of you mermaids?" Hazuki nodded, "yeah, we're all sisters." She said, wrapping an arm around Asther's neck. Somewhere back there, someone had seen Shannon and the ambulance stopped because she was standing in the middle of the road.

"Shannon!" Asther and Hazuki hopped out, Reyna tried to follow, but Hazuki had strapped a belt around her waist, preventing Reyna from getting up. "Shannon, where's Corona?" Shannon opened up her palm, revealing the shell. "No," Hazuki breathed, "no, it-it can't be." Her hands shook as she took the shell gently, it was covered in dirt and grime. She pulled a bottle out of her pocket, washing the shell off. "We should tell her." Shannon grabbed her shoulder, "no, not yet. Reyna just woke up," they all entered the ambulance and began driving once more. "Shannon?" Reyna asked, tilting her head to the side in question. She was looking straight ahead, not at her. "Yeah, I'm here, I heard about your eyes."

"S'okay... Ogy... will fix." Or at least she hoped she would, as well as these annoying little pains she had in her spine. "The burn wounds were bleeding, they're not looking too good." Imani spoke up then, "we're gonna have a proper doctor care for her." She assured the mermaids, they were arriving now at the Tower Society. Shannon took the shell, placing it in a small piece of cloth that she stuck in her pocket for safe keeping. They were going to bring Corona home and give her a proper send off.

|| Memories of You || Yumi Kawamura ||

Ten year old Corona didn't know what to do. She didn't have the faintest idea on how to make sense of the situation. Papa had gone to try to find work, big brother was at the fancy boy's academy... and Corona was at home with Mama, learning how to be a good lady for a good man one day. This was just a normal day, or at least, it was supposed to be. The family was doing better, Mama wasn't staying home late anymore, Papa was trying his best to not fall to his normal vices and gamble, and big brother was doing great in school! The family was on the path to being happy, they wouldn't be stressed and fighting all the time! Well, that was the plan anyways, and sometimes, plans just don't work out. This was one of those times, as evidenced by people breaking into the house.

"Who are you?" Little Corona asked, afraid and confused and not understanding at all what was going on. Mama, however, did understand completely. "Corona, run, get out!" She screamed and Corona blinked, not understanding. "Mama, come too?" But before she could do anything the man grabbed Mama's arms and tied them up with rope, and then pushed her to the ground. "Don't think you can just quit the industry, you still owe us quite a bit of cash for training you!" The man roared and Corona shivered, she was afraid. "D-don't hurt her, don't hurt mama." The mermaid grabbed a knife from the kitchen. She wasn't good at chopping vegetables, but chopping bad people she definitely could do!

Well, the little girl didn't have the strength to do anything more than just swinging and then dropping the blade. It clattered onto the ground and then she stared at it in terror. "Don't hurt her, don't hurt my daughter, you may hurt me as you please, but she's just a little girl!" The man smiled then, and turned to his cronies, the kitchen was swarming with them, staff members of the Brothel here for revenge. "We could train this little thing into a star." He said and then Corona's arms were grabbed, she was lifted up off of the ground and she shivered, eyes wide with terror. "P-put Corona down." She insisted in a numb voice that didn't understand anything that was happening.

Something strange was happening, the man removed parts of Mama's clothes but it didn't make sense, wasn't it a bad spot, a private special spot? "Dirty!" The child proclaimed as the man yanked up her dress to get at what was underneath. "Stop! Stop, this is bad!" They all laughed at the bewildered and confused girl who was helpless and utterly helpless. "Don't worry, this will feel very good for us." That was when yellow dripped down onto the floor, onto their shoes and Corona whimpered, blushed, she didn't want this. She didn't want this at all. "Let's have some fun, boys."

"I'm going to take Reyna to the office, will you girls mind staying here and answering some questions?" Doll and Christopher wanted to get to know the mermaid more before she would leave. They went with Imani to bring Reyna to the Doctor's office. Reyna was still on the stretcher, a bit confused about where she was. "Don't worry, we're just going to have a Doctor look at you." Imani assured her. They parked the stretcher in a curtained off area, things were quiet for a minute or so until someone began to speak to her. "So, what's it like?" Doll asked excitedly, Christopher was recording this of course despite the fact that Reyna was naked. "Being a mermaid and all?" Reyna thought to herself, about to answer when a curtain was pushed open. "Hello there," the Doctor said, washing his hands. "My name is Doc, I'm stationed here from the Japan branch and I'll be examining you this fine evening." Reyna nodded, uncertain where he was.

She jumped when cold hands touched her neck, too close to the wounds for comfort. "It's alright, it's okay, I'm just examining your wounds." He cleaned the burns, getting rid of dead skin and cleaning sores so that there would be minimal scaring. "It looks like they rotated the probes every few volts," he noted, "smart of them." Reyna glowered, "hurts," if he had the energy she would have lashed out. "I know, but I'm almost done." He wrapped bandages around her throat and checked the rest of her for damage. "Need... Coro," something was pushed into her hand, a little paper cup. "Drink this," Reyna obeyed, wincing at the burning in her throat. A few minutes later it cleared up, Reyna coughed once to test it, then spoke, clearer then she had in a while. "Where am I?" Christopher jumped at the chance to answer.

"The Tower Society, you're safe here, Ninety is dead," Doll had never seen Christopher so excited about something. "Your soul, why is it incomplete?" The Doc too, seemed curious. Imani returned with clothing for Reyna, things she had found in the lost and found that she thought would fit. Her guess had been correct, the shorts and sweater fit nicely after Imani helped her into it. "Sorry I couldn't get you any undergarments." Reyna shook her head, "it's fine." She was silent for a moment, "I haven't been to the mainland since World War 2."

"Your soul," Christopher insisted. "So you've noticed?" Reyna smiled, but there was nothing kind about it, it was almost sad. "My soul is incomplete because I'm already dead." She looked up, or in the direction she thought was up and closed her eyes. "You see, when a girl becomes a mermaid, she drowns. I don't know what happens after that. Mother insisted that it was magic, but we wake up on the island, Ogygia with tails and unexplained mental enhancements." Doll was the one to speak this time, not that Reyna knew who either of them were. "So you become demons?" Reyna shook her head, "if I had any idea what that meant then I might agree, but again, I haven't been here since World War 2 and since I'm blind, I won't be of much assistance in comparing differences. Shannon or Corona would be better at that."

"Reyna," Imani said softly, "Corona didn't survive." It was like being shot in the stomach, Reyna's breath left her body, she tried to get on her feet but slipped to the floor. "What do you mean? Stop-stop lying, it isn't funny."

ɗιαƖσgυє cσƖσя:#9757ff ♙ тнσυgнт cσƖσя #57ffd5

|| Memories of You || Yumi Kawamura ||

It hurt. It hurt real bad and Corona was curled up in a ball in the corner like a toy tossed aside, no longer usable. When it happened, when it went into her, her entire body stiffened, it was too sensitive, it was wrong, it hurt, it was too big, she was being torn apart from the inside and she didn't like it. The girl screamed at first, but then a ball of crumpled paper was shoved into her mouth and then it was taped shut with industrial tape so she couldn't make any noise, the girl was choking on it as it went onto her, as she was being violated. Bad girl, they called her. Dirty girl, sinful, God would hate her, she was a whore now, she didn't save it for marriage, so she wasn't allowed to love anymore. Blood spilled as the seal was popped, and then more blood as her small, unformed orifice was stretched and torn to accommodate the intruding appendage.

After the first one was done the girl whimpered and shivered and tried to close her dislocated legs but she couldn't, it hurt too much so she just lay there and cried and hoped it was over, hoped that it wouldn't happen again. But then the men grinned because there would still be two more for her to pleasure and entertain, and once the third was done, the first one wanted another round. Mama was gagged as well, she couldn't speak and Corona wanted her to say something, she wanted something but her mind was numb and foggy and it hardly made sense how many times she was violated, in both the front and back door. It was like - she didn't know what to compare it with, a ten year old girl shouldn't have to experience any of this.

Eventually they tired of her and left her, but Mama's suffering was still continuing. "We had our fun, we should get going now, boss." One of the men said, grinning with satisfaction as he said it. "Let's take both these bitches with us for some more training." So Mama was lifted up, desperately trying to say something through the tape but she was unable to and Corona would forever wonder what those last words could have been. All Corona knew was that if she let herself be taken... then this would happen again, this would happen again and again and it would never stop. She was dirty, a disgrace... if she had already sinned then it was okay to add another sin to the list, wasn't it?

A gun was right there. A gun, Corona knew what a gun was, everyone knew. She reached for it and found that it was right in her reach. A starry look appeared in the broken girl's eyes and she instinctively knew what to do. As if a deliverance of justice by God, Corona fired the gun and the bullet struck. She fired twice more, and the three men who had remained behind to pack her up and clean up the crime scene, they were all dead. Corona let out a little squeak and then shook and then relaxed into a half-conscious state of just sitting there in the blood and tears and then she heard the distant sound of Papa coming home.

"Welcome home, Papa!" The girl chanted like she did every day, holding the gun like she would a stuffed animal, smiling like nothing was wrong even as she sat naked on the floor.

Reyna closed her palm around the shell in her hands, clutching it to her heart. "Corona you dummy," Reyna whispered, "why would you leave me like this?" After Corona had stolen her first kiss, after Reyna had shared her secrets and Corona her's. Her eyes welled up with tears, not that it made a difference in her vision. Reyna sniffled, trying to make it stop. "She deserved better," Shannon said quietly. They were sitting in a waiting area, currently all transports were busy and they didn't know the way to the port. "I'm sorry," Asther spoke quietly, "If I had been braver earlier, I would have gotten you guys out of there, I would have done something, instead... I was a failure." Reyna shook her head, "you didn't know any better. You were an innocent child," just like Ariel, who had died so helpless and afraid as the others watched on eagerly for Reyna to wake up.

Did it occur to them that Reyna may have been happy as Ariel? No, probably not. It was just as Corona said, they thought that Reyna was being oppressed inside, that she was screaming to get out of there. Ariel had been very happy, Ariel had, had two parents that loved her, a playmate that was her best friend, and it had all been ruined. She wasn't going to tell them that though, Reyna had been happy on the island too, which was why she didn't mind going back. As long as they didn't make her kill anyone, Reyna would be fine with it. She could envision it now, she knew that island like the back of her hand. "Do you think going back will restore my vision?" Reyna asked quietly. Hazuki squeezed her hand, hopeful for the same thing.

"Reyna," Shannon said gravely. "When you and Corona were taken, you obtained a piece of Nami's magic." Shannon and Hazuki too, had taken a piece to bring their sisters back. Reyna stiffened, she figured there had to be a reason for why she and Corona hadn't turned into shells. "Nami has been in a coma, the island is dying. We need you to come back," hopefully when they brought Corona's shell back, the magic would be returned to Nami. "I had a feeling it was something like that, why Corona and I didn't turn into shells like Dory." Poor Dory had died crying for mercy, she had been so scared. "Dory is dead?" Hazuki asked, surprised. Reyna nodded her head, "I'm sorry, I lost her shell." Hazuki didn't answer, Reyna couldn't see the expression on her face.

A knock on the door made Shannon stand up. "It's just me," Imani brought in a tray of hot drinks and little sandwiches and cakes. "I figured my as well make the wait comfortable," Shannon took the tray from her and placed it on the table. Reyna reached blindly forward. "Reyna!" Hazuki yelled, quickly slapping her hand away. "You were about to stick your fingers in the tea," Reyna sighed. "Sorry," she bristled, clearly frustrated. Hazuki handed her a teacup carefully and Shannon pushed Reyna in so that she wouldn't spill on her lap. "I'm sorry, I'm grateful for what you did, really, but why didn't you wait until we arrived on the island to wake me up?" No one answered. Reyna sat in silence, wondering if they had all left the room.

"We didn't think about it," Asther spoke at last. "We just... wanted you back."

In this strange space between the worldslife and death, a seemingly impossible meeting of the souls was taking place. It was impossible to describe this setting, so ephemeral and ever changing and yet as still and tranquil as an unmoving sea. Corona's mind was blown just looking at it... but she was glad at the very least to be out of the past. She didn't want to remember what it was like to have her innocence stolen away, she would rather just wait passively until the magic eventually ran out. There was a little bit left but soon it would all be gone, and that would come as a breath of relief. But sadly, her peace was broken by two souls seemingly having come to visit, two souls that really had no business hanging out in her shell.

"Hey there!" Nami waved and Corona glared because this didn't make the slightest lick of sense. "Okay, hang on, your Mental Enhancement was to see through peoples masks! It has nothing to do with talking to dead people!" And then Corona intensified a hot stare at Mother, who was smiling serenely at her, slightly farther back than Nami who found it appropriate to more or less glomp her. "I brought her here, otherwise your mind would remain trapped in the nightmares." Mother said in that way of hers that just pissed Corona off even more. "You're supposed to be dead! Just go and be a skeleton already!" She wanted to be left alone, it would have been better to be allowed to just die as a shell and never come back to life. And yet both Nami and the Mother seemed to completely expect this reaction from her.

Nami sidled up right next to Corona, giving her a big wide grin. "I'm dying!" She said as if it was some big exciting event. Corona just gave the flirtatious mermaid a withering stare, what did this have to do with her anyways? "I gave away too much magic and there's not enough for me... not until you guys come back. So, uh, wanna update me on what's going on?" Corona glowered heavily at this happy-go-lucky idiot, she didn't know anything, nothing at all! "I died, they're coming back, and I don't know anything else, I'm just a friggin shell." Nami's eyes were sparkling though and Corona just wanted to vomit. This was never, ever a good sign, in any circumstance.

The Mother who was very unlike a Mother in every sense was nearly bouncing now. "Because my magic is still in you, I can sense that you still have a chance!" She spin and then twirled, very full of life despite being comatose in the actual physical realm. "Let's see, your heart's secret longing is to be back to normal with Reyna again! That means she holds the key!" Mother explained the process better than Nami could - if Reyna sung a song to her shell as it was thrown into the water at the cove back on Ogygia, the resonance of Corona's subconscious would sync with Reyna's voice and she would be reborn... whether she liked it or not. "It is only possible because of the lingering magic, so if they take too long to return, it'll be too late." Mother finished.

Corona was not happy, not one bit. "I'm not going back, I refuse to come back!" She grinned evilly then, an idea striking her all of a sudden. It was like a fuse had been lit in her brain. "And there's no way for you to tell Reyna, so that's that! She'll never realize there's a way!" But then Nami put her finger on the fuse, putting it out before it could explode. "I'll just let her know when I wake up!" She said with a playful wink that was way too innocuous for how terrible everything was.

Reyna sipped her tea, glad for something to do. "The car is here to take you girls to the port," someone said at long last. Reyna stood, Hazuki took the tea cup from her and placed it on the table. "It was nice meeting you," Reyna said to Imani who nodded as the mermaids left. With Asther on one side and Hazuki on the other, the girls led Reyna while following their guide, a van waiting to transport them. Reyna felt around to try to get in, but someone grew frustrated and lifted her up. She yelped as she was dropped into a seat. "Strap in," the gruff voice of a man came. Reyna mumbled something unkind underneath her breath and felt around for a seat belt. Shannon strapped her in and Reyna crossed her arms, glowering in a direction that couldn't be named because she didn't know which was she was facing. "We'll be home soon, just be patient," Shannon said softly, but Reyna didn't want to be patient.

The drive to the pier was otherwise silent. Wolfe and Luis were waiting for them, they had taken Hope hostage in the ship, seeing as how they needed someone to cook for them what with Reyna being blind and all. "Welcome, right this way," the other three mermaids went ahead, Reyna was stuck, they seemed to have forgotten that Reyna was blind considering how capable she had been before. Wolfe grinned, slinking into the car to unstrap her. He lifted Reyna up, carrying her bridal style to the ship. "Put me down! I'm perfectly capable of walking!" She growled, banging her fists on his chest. "It's only fair," he said, grabbing one of her assets and then dumping her onto the deck of the ship. "Reyna, we're sorry!" Hazuki rushed over. "It's just that you were so strong before, it's easy to forget," Hazuki placed a hand on her shoulder, turning Reyna around to face her.

"It's fine, just promise you won't leave me alone with him?" She hooked a thumb over her shoulder, pointing at Asther, who waved her fingers. "He's not there is he?" Hazuki shook her head. "Just don't let Wolfe anywhere near me," Reyna said, standing up. "I know you all mean well and are trying to give me space, but I can't see. I'm helpless here," Reyna stumbled forward, Shannon caught her. She sighed, adjusting the hood on her sweatshirt. "Am I even wearing bottoms? It feels like it's just underwear. Hazuki shook her head and realized that Reyna couldn't see it. "You're wearing what we call in the modern day shorts and they're um, a little short." Shorts? Why in Nami's name would anyone ever wear something so revealing?

"But hey, the view isn't bad!" Wolfe called with a chuckle as he reeled in the anchor. Reyna glowered once again, but didn't move because she didn't know which way to go. "Why don't we go check on Ariel?" Asther, the Captain of the ship, suggested. "Good idea, take me to her please." Asther took Reyna's hand and led her away. "Careful, these are steps," she guided Reyna down to the bottom floor and through a maze of hallways. The tank was set up in the engine room, the only place with enough power to keep it going. "She's looking fine, all of the machines say normal." Reyna placed a hand against the cool glass, the water inside was kept warm of course. "I'm hoping that Ogy can give her a life of her own." Ariel deserved that much.

Just like all things, as it turned out, another matter was in need of being dealt with. Nami and Mother made way for this new figure - or perhaps, this old figure, but the once innocent, peaceful eyes were filled with willpower and strength. Corona groaned tiredly, what was this horseshit, anyways? "Look, you're just an offshoot of me, okay? An inferior second copy. So don't go getting out of your britches now." Coral was not amused in the slightest at the toxic girl standing before her in this battle of the mind and soul. "Coral might have been a copy, once." She said in an unwavering voice. "But Coral sees Corona now, and Coral knows she is stronger." Corona smirked viciously at her opponent, drawing her harpoon from out of seemingly nowhere. "This body needs to stay dead, I'm keeping it, thanks. You're just an eyesore, so kindly leave the premises."

Since they were opposites and yet mirror images despite the size difference, Coral too, produced a harpoon. She wasn't going to back down, but Corona hadn't expected her to, either. "If Coral has a chance of a happy ending with Ariel, Coral will not hesitate to be this body's real owner!" Corona laughed mocking, twirling her harpoon with reckless abandon before letting it rest in both of her hands, blade pointed outwards. It might have intimidated someone other than her stupid half, but that wasn't gonna work here, unfortunately. "You should learn through experience, girlie. Happy endings don't exist, that's why I gave up!" Oh, this was just a laugh riot. Well, fine. One last fight before the endless void was perfectly fine with her.

"Coral believes that a happy ending is worth all the sadness to get there!" The idiot proclaimed as if she was some sort of gospel-vomiting prophet. "So Coral will never give up!" And so she struck first and that was her mistake. Corona lunged right at her weak point and Coral was too focused on the attack to realize just where she had messed up. She couldn't react on time and ended up getting a blade right through the knee. And with that the fight was just as good as done. "Sorry, honey, but you don't have the same blood lust as me." Her grin became maniacal and depraved as she stabbed into the other knee, destroying any chance of Coral being able to get up and fight for her happiness.

Coral was crying because at least she was smart enough to know the fight was over. "Coral's sorry... Ariel, Coral just... wanted to see Ariel again..." So Corona stabbed her through the back then, sick of hearing all this teary crap. This was supposed to be her fortress of solitude, she didn't need intruders or anything! "Well, I guess your willpower was worthless in the end, huh?" The victor cackled as Coral slowly began to disintegrate, hands and feed first, and then slowly working inwards. Coral smiled a bitter, sad smile. "But we both knew that in the end, despair always wins. This was never going to go any other way." And with that, Coral was gone, and Corona was alone.

Reyna was falling, she tripped and went right over something. Someone grabbed the back of her shirt, stopping her. "Yeesh, can't take our eyes off you for a second." Wolfe lifted Reyna back onto the deck. If she had fallen into the ocean she would have been swimming around blind and could have swam right into the motor, which was something no one came back from no matter how magical. "I thought I was going to the bathroom," Reyna blushed, looking at what she thought was down. Hazuki came to the rescue, "Reyna, it's this way!" She grabbed her friends hand and led her towards the lower decks to use the restroom. It was embarrassing having to have someone guide you to the toilet, but Reyna had no other choice. Onc her business was done and her hands were washed, Hazuki guided her to dinner. "Oh um, come sit here!" She placed one of Reyna's hands on the bench and the other on the table so Reyna would know where to face.

There was food in front of her of course, but Reyna didn't know where. "How long until we disembark this ship?" Reyna inquired, not wanting to stay here for long. She was not enjoying this awful trip down memory lane. "Here," Hope put food on her plate and guided her fork so that Reyna would know where everything was. "I don't eat meat," she said, putting her food down. "Hope, you should know that by now!" Asther scolded and traded out Reyna's fork and plate, making sure to put only vegetables on it. "Thanks," the mermaid mumbled and took a bite of leafy greens. "It will be about seven days until we get there," Reyna didn't want to be on this ship for a week, with nothing to do and no one to confide in. Sure, the other girls were great, but she didn't want to talk to them. If Corona were here-Reyna caught herself thinking that multiple times.

The death weighed heavily in her heart. "I wanted to protect you," Reyna said quietly to the shell. She was sitting beside the tank that contained Ariel, the sound of running water comforting. It was warm in the engine room, tucked between the tank and the wall. Reyna leaned her head against the glass. How had she found her way in here? Well, let's just say that she had since mapped the lower level of the ship out of necessity. "I'm sorry Corona, I failed both of us, didn't I?" She sniffled, clutching the shell with both hands against her heart. There was a clanking, someone entered, the smell of alcohol following them. "Oi! What are you doing here?" Wolfe growled, leaning against the wall. Reyna started, standing up, "I came to check on Ariel." She replied, placing one hand protectively against the tank.

Wolfe laughed. "Right, protect the dead kid," Reyna bristled, "she isn't dead!" Wolfe made a scratching noise, Reyna didn't know what it meant. She heard his weight fall, he probably sat down. "What are you doing in here?" Reyna asked, crossing her arms. "Funny, I thought we both came in here to be left 'lone," Wolfe replied. He sniffed and Reyna realized that his voice sounded strange.

|| Memories of You || Yumi Kawamura ||

There was no one visiting Corona's little universe in the shell now... and that suited her just fine. She didn't need others, she didn't need anyone, she could just exist all on her lonesome and wait until even her consciousness was taken away into nothingness. It was kind of like waiting for a movie to start, or a game to come out, the girl was bubbling with excitement. True death couldn't some sooner! Then she wouldn't need to worry about Shannon's chastising, or Allison's over-excited apprenticeship, or Brie's jokes and pranks! She wouldn't ever have to think about Hazuki's habit of crying at the drop of a hat, and she hated Asther too much to ever let her live on the island anyways! She wouldn't have to consider being molested and violated by Nami, and most importantly... she wouldn't have to face Reyna with her shame, she wouldn't have to see the hurt and betrayal on her love's face.

Hah, love, what a word. Because it never even got a chance to develop into anything! It was just a pathetic sinful one-sided love from the very beginning. Mama and Papa, they failed quite often at being parents, but they did teach Corona that good Christians don't love their own kind, it's always man and woman. So in a way, her feelings for Reyna were taboo, disgusting, were not to be allowed. And there was no way an innocent like Reyna would ever like her back, not after everything that happened. So no, it never got to transform into love - Corona never felt romantic love once in her life, and soon it was all just going to end anyways.

The mermaid laid down on the empty featureless ground, fading in and out of wakefulness as time marched on as it always inevitably did. No one had come, and that was just the optimal solution. To just lie here and be given a space all of her own, even if it was simple a transient, temporary sort of existence, it was nice. If there was such thing as paradise, this was probably it, right? Just with herself for company, she never had to even do anything but just be here and wait. No more lies, no more disappointments, just the end slowly, slowly coming for her, to deliver her to justice, to a fitting end.

"She probably doesn't remember me anyways." Corona did make that deal with Luis after all, and if he had any honor he should keep it. The last request of a dying mermaid, to erase Reyna's memories of her so that Corona never existed in her reality in the first place. "It's not much of a name anyways... Papa just thought of his real love, beer, and then... I was named." From the beginning she was doomed to live a mundane life, and die just as mundanely. Her eyes were heavy, it was difficult to remain awake. Not that there was any real reason to, it wasn't as if anything changed around here anyways. "I guess I could... take a nap."

"You know, you and I aren't so different, 'cept for the boobs and the tail thing." They had been sitting there in silence up until this point, which had suited her just fine. "You mean the trained to kill thing don't you?" Of course, Reyna long ago had learned how to preserve her memories so that no one could ever take them from her again. "I mean the losing everything thing." Wolfe sniffled, Reyna figured the alcohol was making his nose run. "They took everything from us, you your whatever, my Kira." His words were slightly slurred, it was clear that he was very drunk. The door opened, someone else had walked in. "Found them!" Luis called in that annoying British accent. Reyna felt someones arms wrap around her in a tight embrace. "Reyna, thank goodness! We thought you might have fallen off the ship!" Reyna shook her head and stood.

"I was just walking around," Reyna replied, allowing Hazuki to guide her out. Shannon was waiting, she took Reyna's other hand, the two of them guiding Reyna to where she was to sleep. A room all to herself, with the bathrooms down the hall and a closet she had mistaken for the door out on her first night here. There were no other clothes, Reyna slept naked and and wore the same shorts and sweatshirt everyday. On their third day at sea, a storm hit the ship. Things rocked so much that Reyna was disoriented and couldn't find her way around. She tripped on the staircase, ending up on the wrong side of the ship. Asther was coming down from the Captain's room, the boat's engine off because they couldn't fight against the storm.

"Oh, Reyna, the breakfast room is the other way." Reyna allowed Asther to guide her out and towards the dining room, where the others had already started. Reyna received a helping of eggs and started eating, able to sometimes find the food on her own and other times, simply spilled it all over herself while trying to eat. Today was one of those days, especially with the rocking of the ship. Most of her food ended up on her lap and Shannon had to clean Reyna off at the end like some helpless infant. "Thanks for your help and thank you for the food," there were rooms to sit in and pretend she had something to do after all. "Reyna, do you want to help us?" Shannon asked, "we're gonna try to find Dory's shell." Reyna frowned, "I won't be of much use then."

Reyna stood, "I'll just go back to my room." She stood and left the room, heading towards where the door should have been. Instead, Reyna walked right into a wall. "Ouch!" Her nose bled as she fell onto the ground, sprawling on her back. Blood dripped down her cheek, it was most definitely bleeding.

All of Britain had their breaths held in fear. With the war raging and Hitler's forces desperately trying to break into English Airspace, it was a trying time for everyone. Thankfully Corona wasn't alone to worry about this. Mama was here to take care of them and Corona had recently found a new friend, lost and homeless, to take in. A friend named Reyna. Reyna was taller than her, she was prettier, and her hair was so long and silky and an almost unnatural ghostly blue that people couldn't help but stare at the sheen. But Corona, no, she thought Reyna was beautiful because of it. "Papa will be home, I know it for sure." Corona said with a big bright smile, hugging Reyna as they listened to the radio. "And you're a part of the family, Reyna, whether you like it or not!"

Papa eventually did return home, alive and victorious, and with American boots landing on Normandy's shores, the war was reaching it's close. Two girls had grown spectacularly close over that time and with Papa no longer addicted to gambling, he managed to find a good, respectful career, resulting in having enough money to send Reyna and Corona to a fancy girl's academy so that they could learn and eventually marry well into high society if they so wished. The two girls had fun every day, learning new things, meeting new people, finding out more about one another, and generally living good, happy lives. Except, a problem arose, one that Corona, a good christian girl, wasn't sure how to deal with. As the years passed, she found that no, she didn't really like boys or men - but just looking at Reyna's long lashes or plump lips or long flowing locks, it was nearly intoxicating for her.

"Reyna? Can we take the long road home today?" Reyna nodded and smiled in that radiant way of hers. She had recently been proposed to by a man who was enraptured by her looks... and Corona didn't, she didn't like that one bit. Reyna was hers, she didn't belong to anyone else. "Yes, of course, Corona." Her best friend and soul companion said in that cheerful trill of hers. The two girls eventually found themselves at a park bench, enjoying the nice spring day. "What did you want to talk about?" Corona blushed and squirmed because Reyna never failed to see right through her.

It was wrong, it was sinful, all the good Pastors always spoke against it... but Corona couldn't deny the feeling in her heart. "Reyna, I don't want you to go with Sir Blackmore." She said in a very, very faint voice. "I don't want a man to take you from my side. Reyna looked at her, her mouth was parted just a tiny bit in a dainty little 'o' of dawning surprise. "I want you to stay with me, because you being with me makes me happy." There was a long pause, and even though the L word hadn't been used... it didn't take a genius to know what she meant. "Well, being with you also makes me happy." Reyna said at last, smiling like a dazzling sun giving light to the earth below. "So I suppose I'll just stay with you from now on!"

All in all, it was a fine dying dream as the magic reached it's last legs, right?

Reyna was up on the top deck, she wasn't quite sure how she had gotten here, but it was raining terribly and she was trapped. "Help!" Reyna croaked, getting splashed by water. Her legs had formed into a tail, making her unable to walk back inside. It was likely that no one could hear, it was likely that no one saw her either and as the boat was tossed by the waves, Reyna's grip began to slip. She had no idea which part of the boat she was on, only that she needed to get back inside. "Corona, hang on!" Reyna said to the shell in her pocket. She grasped it tightly, another bump coming. This one threw her over the side of the boat, Reyna's grip on the net slipping and plunging her into the icy waves. In here, no one could hear her, there was a definite chance that no one could see her. Reyna held onto the shell as though her life depended on it, she was breathing fine thanks to the whole being a mermaid thing, but the storm was probably pushing her away from the boat.

Reyna tried to laugh, blind as she was, she would only end up dying in the sea. Unable to hunt or defend herself, Reyna would be subject to all sorts of attacks. "I'm going to die down here," she whispered, holding the shell tightly. "I'm sorry Corona, I guess you aren't going to get a proper burial." Something struck her hard, Reyna's body went limp, the shell still nestled on her chest. Her body drifted downwards into the sea, her cry for help still resting on her lips.

She coughed, spewing sea water onto the deck. Reyna opened her eyes, but it made no difference in the darkness. "Reyna! Oh, thank goodness!" Hazuki cried, pushing hair out of Reyna's face. "Someone wrapped a blanket around her, Shannon's voice came from somewhere to the left. "It's a good thing you were floating, otherwise we would have never seen you." Asther's whimper was the one that surfaced next. "We thought you were dead," Reyna coughed again. The shell, where was it? "Corona, where's Corona?" She asked, slightly panicked. She felt someone reach between her mounds, pulling the shell out. "Looks like you stuck her close to your heart," Hazuki said, putting the shell in Reyna's hands. "Or she's really gone mad!" Wolfe's barking laughter came, making Reyna wince. "Do you mind shutting your mouth? It's making my ears throb."

"Ooh, cold, well come on, bring her to my office so I can see what damage has been done." Luis's office was a storage closet with an ironing board for a table. Reyna sat on top of it, allowing him to change the bandages around her throat and fiddle with bruises on her knee. She didn't realize that he was also taking blood samples after putting on the antiseptic that stung like a bitch. "You're lucky that bump on your head isn't worse, otherwise you might not have been able to take your daily nap," Reyna rubbed said bump. "Yeah, well, I would have taken it anyway. It's not like I would have had anything else to do." Reyna, to put it frankly, was bored. "Here," Luis stuck something over her ears, making Reyna jump. Sound came out of it, startling her again.

"Chapter One," it said and then stopped. Luis removed the headphones, laughing. "I've never seen anyone so afraid in my life! I almost forgot you're from World War 2. This is called an Audio Book, I'll lend it to you, if you'd like." Reyna was silent a moment, it's not like she had anything else to do. "Alright," she agreed, letting Luis put the headphones back over her ears. He played it and Reyna listened, sitting in Luis's office all day to listen to the audio version of the Lunar Chronicles.

This was a very frightening moment for everyone, and it was certainly just as terrifying for naive Corona who hardly knew anything about these sorts of things. What even was a date, what did it mean? What made dates so different compared to the normal just spending time with Reyna? What made it into a date, specifically, rather than just two girls together? Corona didn't know, but she hoped it would be okay to wear this dress. The corset was tight and it hurt but it was a fancy dress and Corona wanted to look nice in fancy clothes. Not that she could really try to surprise Reyna or anything, since they both lived in the same house and everything. Most people just figured they were sisters - but really, they were lovers, it was an important distinction.

Yes, maybe it was childish, maybe it was sinful, but Corona's heart longed for this, and was it really such a bad thing, if it just felt so right to be with Reyna? She didn't know, it was impossible to know... but for now, Corona knew what she wanted in life. So the two girls left the house together, some people waved at the two maidens, thinking them to be just innocent sisters going out for a stroll. "Let's go to the park, with the birds and the nature, it will be fun!" Corona beamed at her love, Reyna, and Reyna smiled back at her, looking more and more like the sun with every passing second. Reyna was beautiful, stunningly so, Corona was anything but. She was runty and short and she wasn't slender like Reyna was, and she didn't have a good chest like Reyna did. But Reyna still liked her for whatever reason, so she wasn't going to question it.

It was a world for just the two of them, there was no one else around who was looking, no one else mattered whatsoever. "It's so nice just being here with you, Corona." Reyna took out her art books and began doodling. She was rather good at it, no matter how much Reyna insisted the opposite. "It feels like this is the way life is supposed to be." Of course, there were problems involved, such as eventually telling Mama and Papa, or dealing with not being allowed to marry, because it was improper for two women to have relations such as this, especially adoptive sisters. "I'm still surprised you said yes... it makes me very happy thinking about it."

Corona's face felt hot and warm, her ears were burning, she really did just say the most embarrassing thing. Reyna smiled thinly at her and then took her finger to Corona's long black stands of hair. "Well, if you don't understand your appeal, I suppose I'll just not tell you." She wore a teasing expression and Corona's cheeks flushed like nothing before. "W-well... is it because I asked and you're just being nice? Or - was it -" Reyna laughed, the sound like a gentle wind chime in a soft breeze. And that was when Corona did it, she pressed her fingers to her lips and then pressed those same two fingers to Reyna's. "Y-you a-aren't th-the only one who can tease!" She stammered like a child and Reyna's cheeks tinged pink. A victory!

"Reyna, how do you keep getting lost in these places?" Asther asked, finding Reyna sitting in the closet. "I wasn't lost, Luis told me to step into his office, so I did," Asther shook her head. "Luis doesn't have an office, you've been sitting on an ironing board in the laundry room this entire time." Reyna quirked a brow, "we have a laundry room?" Priorities, Reyna definitely had them. "Can we wash these clothe?" Asther hesitated, "well, I guess." She decided in the end, "just wait in your room and I'll take care of it." Reyna did as told, taking off her clothes in the room and handing them to Asther, er, rather, dropping them on the floor on the other side of Asther, believing her to be standing there. "Just stay here, don't go out." Asther said once again, a bit more firmly. Reyna nodded and sat back on the bed to wait for her clothes. She pulled up her knees to her chest. The door clicked open, "that was fast." Reyna noted, but the footsteps were too heavy to be Asther's.

"Shit, why are you naked?" Wolfe asked, leaning against the wall, pinning Reyna between him and the most stationary object in the room. "Because my clothes are being washed," Reyna replied hotly, not finding it within herself to blush since she could not see him and therefore, chose to believe he was imaginary. Wolfe reached forward, but he didn't touch her chest, instead, he ran his fingers through her hair. "It's like silk, I've been wanting to do that for a long time." Reyna wasn't sure what to think, "don't tell me, you actually have a heart." Wolfe barked out laughter, the sound grating on her ears. "Shh! Being blind makes your hearing better!" Reyna snapped, taking her hair back by giving it a small tug in the opposite direction it was being pulled in. "Why did you come here? Shouldn't you be driving the boat?" Wolfe shrugged, uncaring as to the fact that Reyna could not see it. "We're heading straight for three hundred nautical miles, I put it on autopilot."

Why, back in Reyna's day, they didn't have this newfangled technology like autopilot, they actually had to steer things! "I wanted to talk to you about what you might have overheard that night." Reyna scratched behind her ear, "about what I overheard? You mean what you drunkenly spilled about your daughter Kira?"

"How did you know she was my daughter?"

"You just confirmed it." Wolfe seemed startled, but then laughed again. "Yeah, alright, Kira was my baby." He stood and went to the window that Reyna didn't know was there. "She was ten weeks old when they killed her. Dropped her on her head, took the wife too, she was young, too young for me. I killed her out of mercy." Reyna listened, letting him spill what he had been keeping secret this entire time. "You mean the mercs when you tried to retire?"

"Yeah, this one guy, Drako. Tried to retire, told him I was putting the gun down, but he didn't let me. He said he would kill me, low and behold, he went after wife and child. Dirty cheat, but I gotta say, it was stupid of me not to expect it." He laughed dryly, there was nothing funny about it. "You laugh because it makes the pain better? Or because you're still coping?" There was silence, "I wasn't just a mercenary, I served multiple functions. It depended how much they were willing to pay."

"What can I get for two hundred?"

"A hit and run."

"Funny, I was hoping you'd say twenty minutes." Reyna glowered, "I left before I reached that age. Mama tied all of her girl's tubes so there was never a risk." Wolfe was quiet for a while longer. "This Mam lady, you make her out to be a horrible person."

"She's a nightmare," Wolfe laughed, "probably not any worse than Drako!" Reyna could bet her hat she was.

|| Memories of You || Yumi Kawamura ||

Captain Asther was someone who set out to atone for her sins, to fix what went wrong. She killed her Daddy after finishing the last cruise. It was an act of madness - but also an act of passion, in a way. The girl, utterly disgusted in what humanity had to offer, decided that she no longer wanted any ties to the human realm. She couldn't see her kind, loving father as a good man anymore, so she did the only thing she could think of - she slit his throat in his sleep. How else could she have access to both her share and her father's share of the reward money from selling Corona and Reyna? She - she hated herself, for being the kind of person to profit off of the tears she saw from Reyna, from Corona. They were just mermaids, they didn't deserve any of this.

Maybe a part of the reason for her sudden betrayal was the fact that she was the one that kept Dory's shell for safe keeping. The girl died terrified, in pain, alone, with no one to be there for her final moments. That sin would lie with the sailors forever, but only one of them likely would have any pain as a result. She still intended on returning the shell to Reyna.... but she wasn't sure really how to go about it. This entire expedition's purpose was to rescue Reyna and Corona, to save them and bring them home, where they could try and recover from what they suffered. Corona - they failed her, she's dead now, just a mere pale red shell with as much life within it as a rock did. And Reyna, while she was here, she lost her vision... but according to Shannon that'd recover once they reached Ogygia. Not that Asther was going there, she already made a promise with Luis, after all, to live as his science experiment as a reward for his loyalty.

Still, saving one out of two - it wasn't really the happy ending naive little Asther had been hoping for. As she searched for Reyna she passed by Luis who smiled at her in that awful way of his. "Don't forget our arrangement, Asther." He said as a reminder, not letting his quarry escape to Ogygia if he could help it. Not that Asther had any plans to turn back on her word. "You were loyal, so I won't break my promise." The little blonde girl said steadily. There was no fear... none of that. It was just resignment. After returning Reyna to Ogygia, Asther wouldn't have a purpose anymore. So selling herself to science was at least something.

Eventually she figured Reyna was probably in her room right about now, and so the blonde went there, knocking on the door to find that it was already slightly ajar. The sight she saw was - it wasn't a good one. Reyna was stark naked on the bed, and Wolfe was there, pinning her to the wall. Asther - she couldn't let this happen, not when they were so close! "Get away from her!" She screamed, pulling out her trusty gun with fervor. "You terrible boar of a man, she's naked, so get away or I'll make you!" Keeping her gun trained on the man she so disliked, Asther gently handed Dory's shell to Reyna. "U-um, it's Dory's shell. I kept it safe when you were sold... I thought I'd give it back to you now." Her gun's muzzle never left Wolfe's head, if he so much as tried to look at Reyna...

Maybe in the past, before all of this, Asther was the type to hesitate before shooting. But she killed her own father, so she'd certainly be able to finish off the boar if she felt the need to.

The door burst open, someone began yelling. Reyna, started, jumped, her head hitting Wolfe's he backed up a few inches, dropping something made of glass that shattered on the floor. "Calm down there wild horse," Reyna said, "we were just talking, there's no need to raise your weapons," she heard the click of the safety turn off. Someone placed something in her hand, another shell. Asther spoke, confirming Reyna's theory that it was Dory. "Asher, lower your gun," Reyna said, careful not to make any sudden movements. "Wolfe was not threatening me, we were simply talking, I promise, I would tell you if he had tried anything." Reyna stood, unsure of where anyone in the room had moved to. She made a wild guess, walking towards where she knew the door to be. "Thank you for the shell, I'll keep it safe," she placed the shell on the shelf where Corona's shell was.

"Asther, are my clothes ready? Why don't we send Wolfe to check?" As though on cue, Wolfe laughed. "Right, nothing but an errand boy now in the face of money." He strode out, going right past Asther and towards the laundry room, where Reyna had previously been sitting on an ironing board. "Is it still raining?" Reyna inquired, trying to make small talk. She heard the sound of the door closing, perhaps the rocking of the boat doing that on its own. "Hey," Reyna said quietly, "you're not planning anything stupid are you?" She tried to sit back down on the bed but ended up on the floor. Oh well, Reyna sat on the floor, acting as though she had meant it. "I mean, what did you have to promise those two and Hope to get them to work on this boat again?" Reyna had thought that they would be sick of this boat.

The boat rocked, Reyna jumped, unexpecting of the lull in the sea. "Asther, there's something weighing on your mind isn't there?" The door opened, Reyna jumped to her feet. "They're ready," Wolfe said, placing the clothing on the bed. "I'm leaving, I'm leaving, don't worry." He said, closing the door behind him. "You wouldn't mind helping me put those on would you?" Reyna asked, her cheeks turning red. "I'd like to take a shower too." She murmured, standing still since she had no idea where her clothes were.

"I-n case you didn't realize, you're not wearing anything!" Asther babbled. She expected this to be more high octane energy fuel but instead it was rather low key despite the gun being held right to Wolfe's head. "In front of a man! In front of this man!" There were so many bad things that could come of this that she didn't even want to give them the chance to form in her head, that's how bad! Then Wolfe grinned and touched her cheek. "Oh, are you jealous? You wanted to be naked in front of me too?" That was quite literally the opposite of what she was doing this for and it made the little blonde angry, even as Reyna made him go get her clothes, it was hard to resist pulling the trigger.

"It's still raining, but it's a lot better than before." Asther wasn't going to apologize for suddenly bursting in, she did what she thought was right! And Reyna was blind, she wouldn't be able to protect herself if Wolfe really was leering and staring at her naked body! She stood there awkwardly then because... honestly, there wasn't much to talk about, these two weren't very close or anything. Reyna broke the silence... but Asther wished she had found something to talk about, because she didn't want anyone guessing her true intentions. "Just money, that's all. I had a lot after you and Corona were sold." Asther lied as carefully as she could. Reyna was an agent, so Asther had to be super careful about keeping it all a secret.

Wolfe came back and Asther chased him away again after he dropped the clothes off. "Yeah, okay, sure! I'll help." And so Asther, making sure to not let her hands linger in any bad places, dressed Reyna and got towels for the blind mermaid to go and get herself washed. But Reyna was getting suspicious... Asther needed to divert her attention. "I'm just thinking about Ogygia, and the girls I killed." She had shot a few of them herself during the fighting, after all. "I killed mermaids, and even know it's still bothering me. Am I really welcome?" The girl was running her mouth on and on in her anxiety. "If it's not insensitive... how do you handle knowing you've killed?" Because everyone on the ship knew by now what Reyna's past was. And now they were at the privacies of the shower room for Reyna to speak however she pleased.

"So I've noticed, you should too considering you're the one that took my clothes and told me to stay here. I was just following orders," Reyna did not appear self conscious about the fact that she was naked. Why should she be? She was blind, it wasn't as though she could tell that anyone was staring at her. "Wolfe might be a mercenary, but he isn't a rapist." Sure, he would squeeze a mound or two, but he had never full on raped someone to the best of Reyna's knowledge. Wolfe tried to make a joke but Asther did not find it funny, Reyna shooed him out in the hopes that he would bring her clothes back from this magical laundry machine. Reyna still didn't understand how technology worked, phones, televisions, washing machines, it was all lost on her, which was funny considering she had spent time as Ariel.

The rain was still going, it had set them behind schedule, but hopefully now they would be able to continue on against the raging storm outside of the windows. "Are you sure money is the only thing you offered them?" Reyna asked quietly. She was worried for Ariel, she hadn't visited the body in a few days since they had found her sitting there the time before. Whenever Reyna attempted to head in that direction, they would stop her, thinking that she was all turned around and looking for the bedroom. Reyna had a feeling that there was something no one was telling her. Had Ariel died? Was the body rejecting all of those machines? Reyna certainly hoped not, she wanted Ariel to have a life of her own, a happy one with them on the island. The little girl deserved that much.

It seemed Asther would help Reyna shower. She assisted Reyna in putting on clothes and then led her to the shower, where Reyna proceeded to take off her clothes and wait for the water to turn warm. In the privacy of the bathroom, Reyna felt that Asther could open up to her. No one would be coming in here, if there was something that she needed to confide in the blind mermaid then Reyna would listen and listen she did. "All of us here, all of the girls on that island, we have all killed, you are no different than us." Reyna stepped underneath the stream of warm water, a chill creeping up her back. "You saw what we did there, it's nothing different than what we did any month. The mermaids live on revenge, we kill because we're taking back the lives stolen from us."

"I never took part in it, but that doesn't justify my past." She soaped up her body, continuing to listen to Corona speak. "I don't know," Reyna replied in all honesty. "It's just, after a while, you become numb to it. Mama taught us to compartmentalize, when I had my first confirmed kill, I was happy because I knew it meant that I had earned Mama's approval. She made it a thrill, she beat it into us that killing was just another duty, like doing dishes or taking out the trash."

Asther gulped, her heart thumping hard in her chest. "Y-yes, I'm sure, it's only money!" She said abruptly to Reyna's questioning. Why was she getting so close to the truth! The girl was panicking, she wasn't good at this, and she certainly didn't want to have to break her promise to Luis, he could still do something if she didn't keep him pacified! "I'm not planning on handing myself over to science or anything, i want to go to Ogygia, that would just be too silly, yeah!" Was that a good lie? Was it awful? The blonde was too busy freaking out to realize just how horrible of a lie that was.

Eventually they made it to the bathroom then, at Reyna's bequest. It must be awful being blind, the sniper couldn't even imagine what it was like. Well, she couldn't imagine many things, really, that the mermaid standing here had gone through. Being sold, having your freedoms stripped from you, being trapped in that tube thing... none of that would have happened if she was just a little bit braver about saving the mermaids, she could have saved them both. She asked Reyna a question, about something that was bothering her for quite some time now. Murder. Asther wasn't like most people on this boat, she didn't have a killing instinct or anything. She didn't want to have to kill anyone, all for the sake of some stupid adventure. This wasn't an adventure at all, and Daddy was dead because of it.

It was very strange indeed. Learning about how mermaids were creatures of revenge. "I, uh, I always thought of mermaids as just innocent girls living under the sea... singing and doing their own thing, minding their own business." But then why did they have weapons, why did they know how to fight? The girl was mistaken very much on the true nature of mermaids. "But still, I've killed some of your friends... a few mermaids are dead because of me." Not only Corona, but some actually at the other end of her sniper rifle's scope.

"Mama looked like a bad person and sounds like one too." Asther shook her head, trying not to shudder the more she heard of the woman. "I only saw her as she died... the way Corona massacred her body, there's no way she was a good per..." Then she froze, realizing what a blunder she had just done. They were supposed to pretend Corona died during the battle, but - "I mean, Wolfe, it was Wolfe that did it!" The girl lied sloppily, trying to correct the mistake and cover her traps. She very much lacked finesse, didn't she?

"Asther, can I tell you something?" Reyna asked, "you're a terrible liar." If Asther had only offered them money, then surely they wouldn't have stuck around. What did she promise them? "Shannon tells me you asked her to become a mermaid," Reyna didn't mind that, not one bit. "In order to live as a mermaid, you must live on Ogygia." Reyna explained, "I'm not sure how Corona and I have survived off of the island, but we were supposed to have turned to shells. It is more than likely that when Mother died, Corona and I absorbed some of her magic. When we left the island, Nami went into a coma and Ogygia is dying because of it." Reyna explained, her tone not condescending, but informative. "I surmise that you must be alive only now because of the magic the combination of all of us mermaids have taken from Nami." Did Asther realize it now? Why she had to return to Ogygia?

"There's no point in dying trying to hand yourself over to science, you'll only live a day or two outside of the island." Asther wanted to talk about mermaids now, about how they were not the peaceful creatures they were made out to be. "Most of the girls are mad, their deaths were an injustice to their kind. Many of us were forced to walk the plank, it used to be seen as bad luck to have a female on board. Some were in ship wrecks, others on planes that landed in the sea. Not all girls that drown become mermaids, some simply die. If their too old or the magic doesn't take, they pass on to the next world. If the magic does take, they wake up on Ogygia and are reborn." That was why their souls were like this, strange and giving off the sense that they were half dead.

"It isn't your fault, you were just following orders." Reyna assured Corona, "and after the loss of so many, it would be an honor to have you join us." Reyna reached out, placing a wet hand on Asther's shoulder. "You are not the only one who has sinned." Reyna smiled kindly and went back into the water to finish cleaning. She did not hear Asther's last part, about how Corona had died killing Mama. "Yes, Mama was a vial woman, that was why death was preferable to returning there." Reyna hadn't known there was a new Mama in town, if she had, she would have likely killed herself. Her stay with Mama hadn't been all bad, she had spent most of it asleep.

The youngest mermaid stiffened, her back becoming rigid when Reyna asked if she could tell her something. And right then, right there, the gig was up, Reyna knew, Reyna knew everything. "It was the only way, I was afraid that Mama might try to buy their cooperation and then they would betray us!" Asther was crying already, tears leaking from her eyes, rolling down her cheeks in droplets. "S-so I made them an offer they can't refuse... and now it's all a lie b-because I'll die before I can even be of any science use!" Why did everything she try to do always end so badly? She couldn't she ever do anything right?

But she didn't fit on Ogygia, she was a killer, she even killed her own father who loved her so much just because she wanted to set right what went wrong! Even if you could justify it, she still killed her only daddy in the entire world, all for this. Her eyes widened when Reyna started telling her about the mermaids on Ogygia, and explaining just why they were always killing sailors. It was because the sailors killed them first, it was a cycle of revenge and violence. "So I would fit in, wouldn't I? I can... try to have a new start... as a mermaid?" Already her tears were abating, but only because of a sliver of hope gleaming.

Eventually the bath was done and Reyna was all dressed once again. It was nightfall.. and Asther didn't want to sleep alone. "Do you mind... if I sleep with you?" She asked Reyna, not wanting the blind one to be alone either. "Um, if you just want to be with Corona and Dory, it's okay..." She gulped then, the little blonde didn't want to just lean without being leaned on herself! "I-f you need to talk about... anything, you can talk to me." She then offered a rare smile - sad, yet with happiness as well. "And I want to hear more about... my new home."

Reyna was done in the shower and was now dressed. "Yes Asther, you will fit right in," Reyna smiled confidently, but she was facing the wrong way. Reyna cocked her head to the side in thought, "I think it's fine if you'd like to sleep in the room with me." Reyna allowed Asther to lead her back towards the room, figuring that Asther did not trust Wolfe enough to allow Reyna, the blind girl, to sleep on her own. Even blind Reyna could hold her own, she had proven as such by memorizing the layout of the bottom most floor and was still mapping the rest of the ship, although the upstairs part was hard. Reyna strode first into the room, taking the shells of Dory and Corona and tucking them into her pocket once again. Reyna lay down on the mattress, leaving plenty of room for Asther. "Goodnight Asther, try not to think too much about the other girls, I'm sure they'll accept you easily."

Reyna rose from the center of the lake, walking across the water. On the shore were her friends, all waiting for her, reaching out for her. Reyna grinned, bursting into a sprint when she tumbled and fell and her world went dark. "Hello?" Reyna asked, her words sounding small. When she opened her eyes she was not herself, she was much shorter and standing in a room made of concrete. "Hello? Anyone?" Reyna banged on the walls, terrified. "L-let me out! Please! can anyone hear me!?" Her heart hammered hard in her chest, her throat felt as though it was constricting. At long last the top of the box slid open, light poured into the small space. "What are you doing in there?" Someone tsked and Reyna breathed a sigh of relief.

"Sixty, you should know better than to climb into spaces you do not belong." Sixty? That meant that the woman holding her was Jean. Reyna looked up to confirm it, the one with the tan skin and kind eyes that Mama claimed was mentally ill. "Next time you get stuck, just blow on this and I'll find you," she handed Reyna a whistle that went around her neck like a necklace. Reyna blinked and she was back in the lake, but this time floating, feathers drifting down from the sky. She blinked back tears and rolled onto her side, sitting up. Water dripped down her spine and across her chest, she reached out, closing her fist around said feathers. "Corona?" Reyna whispered, "are these yours?" Reyna stood, the water shallow enough where she needn't worry about sinking.

"Corona, if you're still out there, please listen!" Reyna's chest was glowing, her heart seemed iridescent, made of light. "Corona, come back to us! Come back to me!" She choked on a sob, sinking to her knees. Reyna clutched the feather to her chest, she could have sworn that she felt warm arms wrap around her, but when she opened her eyes, there was no one there.
