ImageImageWaves caressed the wooden hull of the ship, water lapping against the sides as the boat rocked back and forth on the calm seas. The sky was the same bright blue as the water, meeting at the horizon and going on as far as the eye could see. With not a cloud in the sky nor a gust of wind, the boat could go in neither direction. It was bad luck, to be still for so long, it could draw monsters to your ship after all. On board were forms huddled together, their legs tied, their mouths stuffed with cloth so as to keep from crying out.

"It's bad luck to have a lady on board." The Captain was saying, his lips spread thin, as though he was at his wits end. Their ship had been still for days, their food stores were beginning to run low. The women of the ship quivered with fear, praying to whatever deity they believed in. One by one they were cast off, unable to swim with their limbs bound, the cloth in their mouths quickly soaking up liquid. They weren't monsters, they did have hearts.
If luck were a lady, surely she would have never dreamed of this fate for her kind.

Image

ImageSlowly, gently, the water hugged them, carrying them down into the darkness of the depths. Panic, movement and then silence. Bubbles surrounded bodies, filling their lungs with air until they could breathe once more, bound legs turning into a tail that could kick and with powerful strokes carry them away from the ship that had so easily rid themselves of its female passengers.

Could such a thing be? After all, there are no such things as mermaids and yet, here they are, tails swishing, gills breathing, heart beating. The gentle lull of the ocean carries them forward to an island where others of their kind reside, cast the same hand by fate and tricked by those they had trusted. Together they lived, their home half sunken, ruled by the first of the mermaids. They burn with passion, their mission revenge, drowning sailors who grow too close to their home. Outsiders were not welcomed, those who came too close to the island met an untimely end.

Image

ImageEvery night, together they sit on their half sunken island, some perching on broken masts and overturned hulls and underneath the light of the moon their voices fill the sky, calling sailors to their deaths. It is on a night just like this that a very strange happenstance occurs. Their leader, the Mother of all Mermaids, has been captured. Four sailors who survived their call, bent on revenge, stole her away while she was sleeping. They wished to overtake the island, to open it up to all humans and revel that their inane jabber was not insanity after all. They want to prove to the world that women with voices like stars and tails that shine like the moon exist.

As more humans begin to arrive on the island in order to cage mermaids up, they will fight back against humanity. Their battle has only just begun.

When morning finally came, the storm was over, the rain was gone, all that was ahead of them now were clear skies and calm seas. A perfect time to be out sailing in the ocean, they would be able to make good progress today if the weather continued to cooperate. Asther had slept with Reyna that night, snuggled into the mattress. She found it comforting, in a way. Not the same way Corona would, because Asther didn't really have feelings for anyone that way. Romance was the last thing on her mind - there were too many other problems at hand right now. "What are mermaid funerals like?" Asther asked Shannon, who was fishing off the side of the ship.

Shannon didn't really look bothered by the question. She handled it with tact, reeling in the fishing line that caught no quarry. "We all gather at the beach - the island, it has a main beach, I'm sure you've seen it while you were there - and then the Mother makes a speech and then we sing a song for our fallen sisters and return them to the ocean." Her eyes were sad yet meaningful, Asther didn't have to guess that Shannon did this many, many times over throughout her time as a mermaid. "I want to attend too. For - for Corona and Dory." The blue haired mermaid nodded, no longer seeming intimidating like she once did so long ago. "You're a sister now, so please feel welcome." Asther looked down at her feet then. Because there was something else she wanted to say, no matter how hard it was to say it. "I'm sorry for the shells you had to send away because of me." Shannon didn't respond, but she did pat Asther's head and went back to fishing.

An arm was at her shoulder as she was heading back to her room to retrieve some of her dirty clothes to be washed and then dried, someone was there. It was Luis and he was smiling at her, but the grip on her arm was resolute. He wasn't going to let go until he was satisfied. "You didn't forget our deal, did you?" He was almost menacing with that smile and Asther panicked. "I - I didn't! I'm just tricking them, that's all!" Luis was smart enough to make sure no one was here to overhear this exchange, of course. "You kept your end of the deal, so I'll keep mine. I'm going to be your science experiment..." She was lying but it seemed to pacify Luis.

"Just don't forget what we talked about and we'll both be very happy." He said and then left and Asther wondered if she really made the right decision... or if she'd even be allowed to Ogygia.

Reyna awoke the new morning feeling slightly unnerved. Her dreams the night before had not been the best and she had a strange desire to check on Ariel. "Morning," Reyna yawned and turned over, but the bed was already empty, it seemed that Asther had vacated the room long before. Reyna trudged on her own to breakfast, finding the way down the hall a bit easier then times before. "Someone has bedhead," Hope teased, placing a tray in front of Reyna. "Can't help it when you can't see it," as Reyna ate her breakfast sans meat, Hope brushed her hair for her, braiding it back so that the long strands stayed out of Reyna's face. "Thanks," Reyna stood, finished with the breakfast she thought she had cleaned her plate of. In truth, most of it was on the table. Hope sighed, going to clean it up, "no problem," it's not like she could criticize a blind person for making a mess.

Reyna found her way to Ariel's tank, using the wall as a navigation system of sorts. "Let's see, three bumps, then there should be a-ah, there it is," a hole. Reyna took a right around the corner, entering the engine room. She could hear the burble of the tank and the unease lifted from her shoulders, replaced with a calm. Reyna placed her hand on the tank, a small smile slipping onto her lips. "Almost there Ariel, then you'll be free." There were noises outside, it sounded almost like a scuffle. Reyna hesitated, but departed the engine room, most definitely hearing Luis and Asther. "I hate to break it to you Luis, but Asther is coming with us," Reyna was facing the wrong way, but she stood with her arms crossed and confidence radiated off of her in waves.

"Asther won't be able to live off of the island, she'll need Nami's magic to survive now that she's a mermaid." Reyna had the sense that she may have been facing the wrong way and so she turned around, arms still crossed. "She won't be becoming anyone's science experiment, I'm afraid." That's right, Asther would be coming back with them, to Ogygia where she belonged. "Besides, didn't you learn your lesson the first time?" Reyna uncrossed her arms, "or do I need to remind you? I might be blind, but I could still kick your ass." Maybe not against Wolfe, but she had a feeling that Wolfe was not going to fight them on this, in fact, she had an inkling that through their silent agreement, he might even be on Reyna's side, knowing that she could spill the beans about Kira at any given moment.

"Come on Asther, I'll teach you one of our songs," Reyna placed a hand on the wall to find her way back to the room. She had her other hand in her pocket, holding onto the two shells whom never went far from her person. "You're going to fit right in on our island, don't even think about rejection."

Asther was shivering, she was afraid, she was stuck between two possible futures. One was the one she herself signed up for in order to keep Wolfe and Luis's loyalty, the other one was that she was free to go to Ogygia and restart her life, a chance to be new again, to somehow find peace with all that had happened, and happiness as well. The second option sounded better... but she did promise the first one. He had come to ensure her commitment and Asther knew he was going to threaten something if she didn't go along with it. And that was when Reyna arrived, confidence washing off of her like nothing you'd expect of a blind girl. Despite her lack of vision, Reyna was exuding an image of power.

And she was insisting in absolute terms that Asther be taken to Ogygia. Luis clicked his tongue, that smile never leaving his face, not even for a second. "You should know that both Wolfe and I received various offers to switch sides and hand all of you over to Ninety." He sighed, almost like he was regretting the decision he made. "We chose to remain loyal to you, Captain, you don't want to betray our faith in you, do you?" Well, Luis mostly, since Wolfe was probably just siding with whoever he felt like siding with. He claimed money was his only motivation, but it wasn't as if he benefited from Lus having a science experiment or anything. Luis then reached forward to grab something. "Reyna!" Asther cried but Luis's hand found nothing. "You're keeping close care of those shells, aren't you?"

Luis groaned then, still smiling in that beguiling way. "And she won't die, we can just attach her to the same machine Ariel is." With that he let them go for now but Asther was still afraid. "I don't think he'll just let this go." She murmured, taking hold of Reyna by the sleeve. "Thank you... you didn't have to, but you did." She nodded and happily followed Reyna, because she wanted to learn to sing, but there was just one thing left. "Um, you probably already noticed... but I think he'll try to take the shells to trade for me. If that happens, I don't mind..." She shook her head, rethinking her words. "No! We won't let him get the shells in the first place!" Yes, that sounded much better!

When they heard of it, Shannon and Hazuki both wanted to join in on the singing. "It's been forever since we ever sang anything." Hazuki's voice was fluttery and soft and even Shannon probably had a pretty singing sound to her name. "Let's teach her a happy song to remind us of the good days to come!" Hazuki suggested, beaming at Asther, the newest mermaid. "We'll have to teach Ariel too, I hope she can find happiness with us." The child deserved happiness, she probably had the worst luck out of all of them here.

Reyna was not going to let this go, even if Luis thought he would win this fight, without those around him protecting him, he was nothing more than a weak scientist and history enthusiast. "You may think you're some great force of will to be reckoned with, but out here, in the sea, this is mermaid territory." How was it that someone blind could exude this much confidence? Reyna was sure, but she did know that this was a battle Luis was not going to win. "There were many times I could have given you away to the proper authorities, but I didn't do that did I?" Reyna scowled, two could play at this game. "Let's see, Luis Reamus, wanted for possession of illegal weapons, suspected illegal activity within the black market, and countless other misdemeanors and strikes. You're not a very good doctor if you have so many malpractice suits."

"How did you know that?"

"You just confirmed it for me," Luis made a grab for something, but Asther shouted, allowing Reyna to back up so that Luis's hand closed around nothing. "You'll never get those shells," Reyna hissed. "Ariel can only live outside because she's not a real mermaid," Reyna would have reached out to grab Asther and bring her in closer, but she didn't know where Asther was standing and Reyna did not want to run into a wall. At long last Luis swaggered away. "You're the Captain of this ship Asther, I'd expect you'd be able to convince at least one in your crew to follow you." It was not meant to be an insult, it was more advice than anything. "Now come, let's go learn that song." Reyna's smile was gentle now, "I've hidden the shells somewhere he'll never look." Reyna assured Asther, not telling her where it was in case there was someone listening in on them. The other girls wanted to sing too, they wanted to be a part of the action, or perhaps just relieved of their boredom. The four of them sat on the floor in the common room, somewhere Reyna had never been.

"Most of the mermaids on the island are fighters," Shannon explained. "We have a group of singers to disorient the sailors, which your Captain seemed to have already known about, and the others are the fighters that work to sink the ship." Shannon of course was the one that knew all about this. "We fight not only to take revenge, but to protect our island. Every month or so, the full moon rises the tide high enough for a lost ship to come into our lagoon. Should they spot us, it would become a danger to all of our kind. So we kill them, not only because they hurt us, but because our secret needs to stay secret. That is why mermaids cannot exist off of the island, that and one other reason." Reyna gave a curt nod, now you know why we fought so hard to kill everyone on the ship."

Reyna smiled, "I'm glad that you'll all accept her as one of us." Reyna said quietly, she wanted to see again, she wanted Ariel to have a life of her own.

Even without sight, Reyna proved herself to be a force to reckon with, and Luis wouldn't be so casual in the future about how he went about things. "I'm not smart or anything." Ariel confessed sadly, just because she was a Captain didn't really mean much of anything. "And I'm not strong either, the only reason they followed me in the first place was for the money." And soon they would get their prize, because as a mermaid, Asther wasn't going to need it. But enough about that, Asther wanted to learn more about what it meant to be a mermaid, so she followed Reyna and then Shannon and Hazuki both joined along, wanting in on the fun.

"I understand now." Asther said with a nod. It was for self defense, it was protection, the mermaids had no choice because if humans found out - well, now they all knew the things that could happen if humans discovered mermaids. "Um, would I be a fighter? I can use a gun, kind of..." She wasn't the most confident in her ability to sing or anything. "Well, you never know until you try what you can do!" Hazuki then started to hum, to clue both Shannon and Reyna in on the song she intended to sing. It was slow but then the words came out, a song about laying on the surface of the sea with sisters giggling and pestering you to no end. It was a silly song, but it was a happy one, and everyone here wanted a little reminder of the happiness waiting for them on Ogygia, the island of paradise.

When Asther next woke up, Wolfe announced something, as the ship's navigator. "There's a big wall of mountain rocks in the middle of the sea." He muttered in surprise, not comprehending what was going on. And there it was, just a ring of high, impossibly high mountains that no one could surpass. "It's not the full moon, so the path is sealed by boat." Shannon regarded Reyna with worry. "We can't waste more time, if we have to, let's hike over the mountain, Reyna. The others can remain here and bring Ariel to the island." Because Ariel needed the ship's engine if she wanted to live.

"I'm strong but I got a feeling I can't push the ship over, huh?" Wolfe cracked a bad joke that no one paid attention to because it really wasn't of substance or value. Asther wanted to see the island, but she also knew the risk of leaving Ariel unattended. But the longer they took, the longer Reyna would have to be blind. Asther had no idea on how long it would take until the full moon rose again. "We might not have the chance to wait." Shannon muttered, lost in memory. "The island, every few years it's location changes and there's no pattern to it at all. So it's we go, or we don't, but we have to pick one."

Reyna awoke to a very familiar sound. She sat up and rubbed her eyes, wondering why it was so dark and then remembering that she was blind. There was a bird on Ogygia that was extinct in the natural world, a bird with which had a very distinctive call and plumage. Since there was little to no interaction with the outside world and the mermaids did not eat meat, the birds were able to thrive. They were flightless, relatively small and very colorful. They were brilliant to look at, if you could find one in the dense jungle. Feeling excited, Reyna checked to make sure the shells were safe, which they were, then went to breakfast. The others were having a debate, the tide was not high enough for the boat to sail through and they had encountered a problem since they needed Ariel's tank in order to heal her. Reyna felt nervous, she wasn't sure why, but she knew that something today was going to go positively wrong.

She sat down to eat and listened to both sides, mostly uninterested in the food set out before her. "Well, the problem with my trying to go through the jungle with you and Hazuki is the fact that I'm blind." Reyna replied, "I would be able to do nothing but slow you down." Reyna took a sip of what she hoped was water, but turned out being orange juice. Pleasant enough, she continued to drink it. "If we can wait for nightfall, perhaps there is another day left of the full moon?" They would have to go into the waters of the lagoon if they wanted to heal Reyna's sight and Ariel's mind. The men, of course, could not enter the lagoon, it was a sacred place, meant only for woman. Reyna wasn't sure why, but this is what she had been told by Mother so long ago. That was why when sailors fell into it, they turned to shells. Perhaps the only shells in the lagoon were littered with the ghosts of souls.

"If anything, you and Hazuki can go and stake out the path, we don't know how long the hike will take either, or how difficult it might be." They could inform their sisters that there were three mermaids waiting on the other side to be picked up, perhaps they could think of a way to get the boat here. "I just think that there's not going to be a way for me to get over those mountains, not blind like this. It took me a few days to map the layout of the bottom of the ship alone," Reyna crossed her arms. "If we can bring the boat close enough, maybe we can walk on the sand across?" The problem was, if the sand was wet, the mermaids would have to drag themselves across the dirt to bring themselves into the lagoon, which could take hours depending on how heavy their tails were and how big of a gap it was.

According to Shannon, the island hasn't changed it's random location in a few years. This meant that any day now it would all shift and that would be very bad for everyone involved. Shannon had the idea of going with Reyna through the mountain and jungle to get to Ogygia and at the very least restore Reyna's sight, but Reyna thought that that plan wouldn't work, not with her being blind in the first place. "You deserve better than to have to wander in the dark." Shannon was more stressed than she usually was, her expression mysterious. Hazuki was also worried, she didn't want to have to wait too long for the tide to rise. "Nami's waiting for us, she's in the coma, but we don't know how much longer she or the island has!"

Asther didn't really have much of an opinion but she had a feeling that she didn't want Ariel separated from the rest of the mermaids. She had a feeling Luis would do something with her if they let their guards down. "It sounds like a puzzle..." Asther noted quietly. She really wasn't good for thinky stuff like this, and she wasn't sure how good she was at singing. It was hard to judge because Hazuki was just so much better than anyone else at that, no one could really hope to compare. "Well, I'm sick of eating nothing but fish and vegetables! And we ran out of meat!" Wolfe declared because that was totally the end of the world for him. "There's girls in the city waiting for Wolfe to make them sq-"

"Okay, that's enough out of you." Shannon kicked him in the side and he just laughed as a response, crass and perverted like he always was. So disregarding his opinion, quite a few of them wanted to have an expedition to the mountains, but Reyna seemed to be against that. "We can try waiting." Asther suggested meekly. "Even if the island warps away... for all of you with magic, won't you sense where the island is?" Hazuki nodded but it was more complicated than that. "Our magic, it was only supposed to last two months. We're almost at the limit, and there's no telling how much left Reyna has." So that was going to add a whole other layer of difficulty.

Reyna looked down with a frown, "I've been sensing it for a while now, the decline in magic." She didn't want to admit it. "I have a day left at most." Reyna twirled a strand of hair around her finger in thought. "Hmm," she debated, wondering what they could do to remedy this situation. "I have an idea, not that any of my ideas ever work, but-" Reyna stood to explain it, pacing at the front of the room. "What if we can outfit the rowboat with wheels?" Reyna debated, "If we can do that and find the backup generator, assuming this ship has one, we can transport Ariel on it on land." Reyna hoped that this would work, she wanted Ariel to live.

"Wolfe can pull it," that would get Wolfe off of the ship. "I can sit in the boat too, that takes care of that problem, Asther, Hazuki, and Shannon will lead the way through the jungle, and Luis and Hope, you two will guard the ship and bring it around when the full moon hits." Reyna turned towards them, "Do you think it's going to work?" She asked, hopeful for the future. The others were silently debating, Reyna allowed them to bide their time. "Let's do it!" Wolfe said at last, prompting the agreement of everyone else in the group. It took a few hours, but at long last, they made it to the other side, Luis tagging along deciding that he needed to be there to make sure Ariel came back to life. No one else knew how to read those machines, it seemed that they would have to trust him for the time being. By the time they reached the other side of the mountains, it was nightfall. "Reyna, we're at the water's edge." Shannon informed her and Reyna nodded and stood.

"Where is it?" Shannon and Hazuki guided her, shielding Reyna from view as she took off her clothes and dove into the water. At first she panicked, her legs became heavy, turning into a tail, but all was dark, an all encompassing pressure in her mind. Not knowing which way was up or down, Reyna swam in circles until slowly, the edges of her vision began to clear. She swam in faster circles, excitement welling up inside of her and the faster she swam, the clearer her eyesight became. At long last, Reyna stuck her head up out of the water, beaming. "I can see!" She breathed, blinking the tears out of her eyes. She held the shells enclosed in her fists, having hid them on her person the entire time.

The time had come for them to submerge Ariel. At long last it was the moment of truth. Ariel was released from the tank, Hazuki and Shannon assisted the mermaid's body into the water, Reyna staying close beside them. Her legs turned into a tail, so small and fragile, but Ariel did not open her eyes. Leo watched the machines, noting the change, his poker face remained excellent. "I'm afraid it didn't work," he spoke sadly, but Reyna knew it was a fool's errand, having brought her here. "Reyna, I tried to tell you," Shannon said quietly. "The lagoon can't heal dead mermaids." Reyna looked away, nodding, "I-I know," she said quietly. "Gentlemen," Reyna stood, "Thank you for your assistance," Wolfe and Luis both nodded and waved, going on their way. "This is Asther's first swim in the lagoon, isn't it?" Reyna grinned and the four mermaids swam back towards their home.

Ogygia was just as mystical this time was it was the first time. When Asther first laid eyes upon the island, she couldn't help but feel a sense of awe and wonder, a new feeling of adventure brewing. Now was the same thing, except it also had the element of a war veteran returning home after a long war. Yes, she never called this place home before, with all of it's strange plants and animals and shrubbery, the mermaid had to admit that a part of her felt at ease here. It was akin to a hand patting her back, congratulating her for working so hard, for setting things right. Was it just her innate nature as a mermaid to feel at peace at Ogygia? Not all things were happy, though. Dory died, an innocent unrelated victim in all of this. Corona was dead, the broken warrior that gave up on life and love. And Ariel, the little child that clung so hard to life because it was all she knew - she too, was gone, the island wouldn't bring her back.

There were two eerily similar mermaids at the end of the lagoon, where the beach opened up. They looked exactly the same barring their wildly differing hair colors, blue and orange. Twins, singers, Asther recognized them, she saw them before. "Sorry it took so long. Brie, Allison, we're back." Shannon gave a pained smile and hugged their welcomers as tightly as she could. The twins fussed over everyone, both of them scanning the group to see who was who and who had come back. "Reyna, you're back! We - we missed you so much, Brie couldn't stop crying and having break downs after you and Corona..." Allison's smile faded as she realized. "Wait, where is Corona, why is she not here?"

Hazuki gave the explanation before anyone else said anything, because they didn't want Reyna to know how she died, only to remember Corona for her strength. It was kinder for Reyna to think she died a hero than to know the real circumstances at play here. "Let's go wake Nami up and then... start the farewells." Shannon said, doing her best to suppress the desire to just break down and cry. Waking Nami up was just returning the magic back to her. She woke up then and cried and hugged Reyna and then made a joke about how great her boobs were. That night, it was time to begin the ceremony, at the cove where they returned the shells of fallen mermaids back to the ocean.

"If I fought back from the beginning, maybe they could have come back." Asther was crying, touching the Mother's elbow for support as everything was set up for the ceremony. Nami was just wearing a faint smile, as if she knew something no one else did. "It's okay, this isn't going to be the ending you think it is." Was all she said on the matter. Nami always had a flare for the dramatic, and she had a plan in mind. "Let's make this a special occasion, different from the usual fanfare!" Nami declared, and then went to Reyna's side. "Rey, I know it's hard, but you were the closest to her. You two always had a special bond. So instead of the usual goodbye song, can you sing a song that's special for you and Corona? And then you can put the shell back into the water?" That was how to release Corona from the shell - it was only possible because of magic left over from a dead Mother, however. Otherwise this would never have been able to happen, a miracle like this.

Reyna was immediately bombarded upon reaching the shore. Her sisters overwhelmed her in a tidal wave of hugs, Allison and Brie among the two first to reach her. Shannon and Hazuki too, were greeted with this exuberance then, well, they surrounded Asther. At first Reyna was nervous as to what they were going to do, but the girls were so excited to see a fresh face that they welcomed her right into their arms. "It's been a long time," Reyna admitted. At long last, they would return Nami's magic to her and wake her up. It was simple really, all they had to do was walk in and touch Nami's arm. Nami woke up almost instantly, coming around within five minutes. She sat up, blinked a few times, and got in a surprise attack by squeezing Reyna's chest. Reyna of course groaned, but allowed it to happen this one time.

"I'm sorry," Reyna said quietly and handed Nami the shells. "Corona and Dory didn't make it back," Reyna blinked back tears from her eyes, she had never really been an emotional mermaid, the others had often teased her for it, but these two deaths just got to her. The funeral was to be the next day, when it began, Reyna was certain that she was going to be sick. Standing there on the edge of the water, it seemed that she had been doing it for as long as she could remember. Nami had a strange idea of what to do for these mermaids, she wanted it to be personal, since Nami had been Reyna's closest friend. "Alright," Reyna said quietly, tossing the shell into the lagoon. The moon shone down on them from its position in the sky like a sad beacon, allowing the girls to watch the shell float down. Reyna felt almost embarrassed being singled out to sing like this, but she would do it for the girl... for the one her heart longed for.

The song that stood out the most in her mind was one from the main shore, one that Jean had loved. On hot summer days, when no one wanted to move, Reyna would sit on the porch and Jean would play their strange large radio while washing the dishes or cooking. Mama would be in her office with the window open and Reyna, well, Reyna would imagine a boy striding up to the porch and taking her far away from that place. She would dance in circles on the porch and then he would sweep her into his arms and the two of them would run far, far away. It was a song by a woman named Patsy Cline, an old song for her generation but well, Jean had always liked to listen to music from the 1920's.

"I'll be loving you, always
With a love that's true, always
When the things you plan
Need a helping hand
I will understand, always, always

Days may not be fair, always
That's when I'll be there, always
Not for just an hour
Not for just a day
Not for just a year, but always

Days may not be fair, always
That's when I'll be there, always
Not for just an hour
Not for just a day
And, not for just a year, but always."

It was a very unhappy prospect. Right as she and Reyna were about to be married, Corona awoke, feeling sick and nauseous. She didn't - she didn't understand. In that dream, everything had gone so well, so perfect... and it was so sickening. No, Corona was a monster, she was horrible, and Reyna was just perfect and that was that, it was fact. "Disgusting dream, stop messing with my head." It was hard to really focus on anything, and Corona felt sick and queasy. Was this the end of the line? Was this how she was going to die? Was her magic at the end? Was this when she would finally die? Someone was there, looking at her, it was Mother. "It's not your time yet." She said in that gentle tone and Corona shivered.

"No! Please, please, just let me die! Let it end, I don't want this anymore!" She didn't want to go back to life, she didn't want to return to where everyone else was! She just wanted to go into the void, she just wanted to stop being herself. Mother was smiling at her but it wasn't the kind of smile you'd expect from her. "Reyna had the chance to forget all of her past pain in life, you know." Mother was looking at her ruefully. "And because of you, she was brought kicking and screaming away from her chance of being truly innocent. Isn't the same thing happening to you?" So because Corona was selfish - no, she wasn't going to accept this, she wasn't! "Reyna couldn't be happy like that, she already found happiness with us!" Mother wasn't going to convince her, she might as well just give up! "Well, it's not for me to tell you how Reyna feels, she'll inform you once it's time."

It was like being dragged and torn through a meat grinder all at once. But then there was a light and while others might see it as a miracle, Corona saw it as anything but. Back to the island, the cursed island that was a prison, that she could never escape from, back to life where she would be forced to be face to face with Reyna, the one she least wanted to see ever again. The sensation of being reborn was akin to being torn apart and then painfully stitched back together, bit by bit. "Hey, there's something strange where the shell fell." Nami said with a mysterious grin on her face, and Shannon dove in immediately to pull Corona up from the sea.

"H-" She coughed many, many times trying to catch her breath, giving Reyna a glance and then turning away. No, it was too late - the romance was just a distant dream, it couldn't come true. She was far too twisted for that now. "H-hullo." She was back to her normal runt sized self... it wasn't attractive, it wasn't even pretty, she was a disproportionate mess. But it was her body, the one she was used to, and that mattered more than anything else. "Ogygia..." Her head, there was a mounting pressure and she was exhausted and then her eyes rolled up and Corona passed out right in Shannon's arms.

So enraptured by the song, Reyna did not notice the figure bubbling up from the surface, at first slowly, then a bit more quickly, until she was right in front of her. Reyna abruptly stopped, a short gasp released from her mouth. "C-Corona," Reyna said, both awe and dumbstruck. How was this possible? Corona let out a short hello, then promptly collapsed. Shannon was the one that had caught her, the other girls all standing around like Reyna was, watching with wide eyes. Reyna whirled around to face Nami, "You knew?" She asked quietly, not confronting because she wasn't mad, but wanting to know. Nami nodded her head, "Mother told me while I was asleep." That was enough to make all the girls not to question, all but Reyna, who wanted to know more. Some were looking out hopefully for Dory, as though they expected the red head to waltz onto the sand and giving her signature cock of the hip.

A small white squiggle transferred from Corona's chest to Nami's, Nami's magic now fully restored. "It was only because she had my magic inside of her that she was able to return," Nami informed them, which meant that no, Dory would not be returning home, her shell would forever remain at the bottom of the lagoon. "It's late, everyone should get some rest!" Shannon's voice rose above the others, Reyna nodded numbly, watching as Corona was taken away by the medic girls who had taken over Reyna's job. "Reyna, why don't we walk?" Nami asked, taking Reyna's hand and gently leading her away. "Is it me, or did these get bigger?" Nami asked, attempting to squeeze Reyna's chest again. Reyna crossed her arms over them protectively, "don't," she said quietly, reminded of Wolfe and his tendency to touch anything that wasn't his.

"It seems that this trip taught you something after all," Nami said in a most mysterious way, leading Reyna into the jungle. Reyna had kept the sweatshirt from her little (or rather large) expedition. "And what's that?" Reyna inquired curiously, wondering how Nami could be so active if she had just awoken. "You're heart," Nami noted, "you're more open. Instead of locking it inside of a steel trap, you've opened up, it's a stark difference between the Reyna you were four months ago." Four months? That's how long Reyna had been gone for? It felt much longer, as though it had been years. "It's probably because I got to experience the world as a child again." Nami raised a brow, no doubt able to see straight through Reyna's mysterious facade.

"It's a shame about Ariel," she said at last, not surprising Reyna in the least. Somehow Reyna had figured that she would have known. "Yeah, I thought that the pool would heal her." Nami was the one looking at Reyna incredulously now. "What do you mean? It did heal her." Reyna froze, "but they said-they said those numbers meant that it hadn't worked." Reyna felt fury bubbling up inside of her. It was no wonder that they hadn't made a grab for Asther, they thought they were getting the better end of the deal, a helpless little girl who wouldn't know how to resist. "No," Nami placed a hand on Reyna's shoulder. "I'm sorry, but you can't go back for her. She's not a real mer-"

"She's part of me!" Reyna fell to the ground on her knees and buried her face in her hands. "She was-she wanted to live normally, I thought I could give her a second chance by bringing her here." Nami gently placed her hand on Reyna's shoulder again, kneeling down beside her in the underbrush. "Reyna, those were thoughts and desires, you don't know what Ariel wants now, she's a separate entity with a conscious of her own." Nami still allowed Reyna to grieve for the child she had never gotten to be.

Being alive again was most certainly not one of Corona's plans. No, far from it, she would have preferred to have just died. And when she woke up the next morning, the mermaid most definitely did not want anything to do with anyone. So she skipped breakfast by jumping out of the window in her room, leaving the Main House before everyone else had the chance to. To no one's surprise, someone else was already awake, and to make matters worse, this someone was one of the mermaids who had seen the ugly side of Corona. Hazuki was there, practicing her singing and then she stopped when she heard the impact of someone jumping and landing on the sand. Corona might have healed legs but they still needed some work before reaching peak physicality, and so they crumpled under her and she rolled a few times until she regained her balance.

"Wow, what a dramatic way to skip breakfast. Is this a new diet, the jump-out-of-window diet?" Hazuki's words were laced with harsh sarcasm. She might have cried with happiness at the revival but now she was certain Corona was going to be a pain in the butt with all of her negative energy just swirling about her. "Hardy har har, joke again, let's see where that gets you." Corona snapped as she pulled herself back to her feet, brushing her bruised legs off until they were free of sand. "Reyna missed you more than anyone. You shouldn't keep avoiding her." Hazuki advised, ignoring Corona's threat because she knew the mermaid wouldn't actually attack her. No, she was more likely to hurt herself more than anything.

And the formerly dead mermaid scoffed, rolling her eyes with an overdramatic flair. "In case you didn't realize, I failed her, what makes you think I want to see her?" Corona greatly preferred her pleasant dying dream of a happy life with Reyna, romance, marriage, dates, everything. She wasn't enjoying the reality of the situation, in which Reyna absolutely didn't feel the same way about her. If she did, then back on the boat, things would have been different. "Asther's your niece, you could at the very least watch Nami tease her about being cute for the first time, it really threw her off." Asther was an idiot, and Corona didn't care about blood ties or anything.

"Shouldn't you idiots be working on finding a way to get Ariel back?" Because there was a distinct lack of idiot crybaby, that's for sure. "Nami says we can't, if she gives us more magic to head out, the island will die." Hazuki's voice was sad now. "We already lost a lot of our arable farm land while we were gone... we can't afford any more excursions." Corona didn't really care one way or another, but it would have been nice to get the chance to kill the sailors. It wasn't right that they all get to live. But then again, she didn't deserve to live either. "Now come on, you need to eat, you're way too thin." Before Corona could get away Hazuki grabbed her by the ear and started dragging her back to the Main House.

Reyna was terrified to go to sleep, she was worried that she would wake up and be blind again, or that Corona had just been imagined and was still dead. Reyna hugged her knees, thinking that if she could just stay up, then all would be right with the world. At around two AM there was a knock at the door, Reyna sat up, swinging it open, only to see Shannon. "What are you still doing up?" Reyna inquired in surprise. "I could ask the same of you," Shannon stepped inside, sitting on the edge of the bed. "Listen, when Corona wakes up, don't be surprised if she acts strange and tries to avoid you. She... she has a lot of regrets," Reyna shook her head. "I already expected this," she sat down too. "When we first arrived on this island, Corona kept saying that it would be better if we had died, I expect that she's in a similar mindset after all we went through."

Reyna hugged herself, "she probably thinks it's her fault I ended up back there, with Mama." Shannon touched Reyna's arm, "if you want to talk about it, I'm all ears-" Reyna shook her head. "No, there's nothing to talk about." Shannon gave Reyna a look, "there's no need to keep secrets, I already saw what sort of facility she was running." Reyna looked away, she was beginning to feel sleepy. "Get some rest, you're going to need it," no sooner did Shannon declare such a thing, Reyna's head hit the pillow and she plunged into darkness. "Goodnight," she whispered, the blackness overtaking her as a whole. Reyna curled up underneath her blanket and tossed and turned most of the night, waking up at almost noon. Reyna rolled out of bed and rose to her feet, brushing her hair quickly before going downstairs to the kitchen to scrounge up some food.

Entering through the other door were Hazuki and Corona. Reyna felt as though her heart stopped, she was frozen at the bottom of the staircase, a block of ice in the warm weather. Slowly she thawed, gathering the strength she needed to go over to the other side of the room and hug her. Hazuki did not let Corona escape, Nami subtly blocked the doorway so that the two would be forced to confront. It was a small island, it wouldn't be good for teamwork if there was a riff among coworkers. "When I heard you were dead," Reyna said quietly, "it was like I had lost a part of myself." Shannon kept the other girls from peeking in through the windows and giggling. Never in their islands history had there ever been two girls that had any romantic interest. Unless of course you counted Nami hitting on everyone.

Someone had set the table with lunch for just the two of them, it was clear that they had tried to set the mood by putting out candles and spreading rose petals across the wooden surface. Reyna did not let go of Corona, feeling that if she loosened her hug, Corona would turn back into a shell and leave her forever.

Corona was still rubbing her incredibly sore ear when a certain someone, the last person she ever wanted to see again, descended down the stairs with immaculate timing. Reyna was here, and Corona wasn't quite sure how to describe the myriad of emotions stabbing through her chest as if each different feeling was an arrow right into the heart. A cold chill, her gut dropped, panic started to rise in alarm in her head, she needed to get away, she had to! Corona glared at the door like a wild animal, her long black hair swishing, almost touching the floor as she turned, but the door was being cleverly blocked, freedom was going to be impossible. The broken girl gnawed on her lip, crossing her arms, planted her feet, she was going to have to hold her ground, then, wasn't she? She most certainly did not return the hug.

Rather quickly it became apparent that this hug was in fact closer to desperate clinging, like how a child would hold onto a toy and refuse to ever let it go lest it disappear forever, just like how this toy wanted to be, gone, nothing but a memory. Reyna spoke and then the onus was on Corona to make a response. She was trying, she really was, she had a million things to say but all of them got stuck in her throat as she struggled and squirmed against the hug enveloping her. "You did lose yourself, and I'm pretty sure it's still lost, no matter how you try to trick everyone here! Corona was lashing out irrationally, her words not even making the slightest bit of sense. "You became that unsightly abomination that everyone's so protective about!" Ariel, of course.

Ugly thoughts were stabbing across the landscape that was her head, all of them pushing to the front in order to be spat out at Reyna here, no matter how sensible or logical any of those thoughts were. She was out of control, a rapid beast pretending to have sentience. "You were taunting me when I was breaking, pretending you still existed, you were enjoying it! Why did we even come back here, shouldn't you go back to the idiots that want to pretend to be parents because they're too much of failures to spawn some creature themselves?"

Her eyes widened then and Corona's mouth became a cold hard line, her eyes finally regaining sanity. She grinned then, and it was a bad sign for everyone. "We both want something, and neither of our 'things' are here on Ogygia." she tore herself away from the hug, a dirty expression spreading on her mien. "You were happiest as an oblivious little freak, and I was happiest dead and gone! So what if we set things right? There's power lines, we can shock your soul out until you forget everything, and then it'd be easy for me to just blow my brains out with a gun, wouldn't it?" A manic smile appeared then and Corona giggled. "Wouldn't that be the happiest end for everyone?" Because clearly her happiness as Ariel was more important than any good thing they ever had on Ogygia.

Reyna took a step back, dissolving the hug between them. Trick everyone here? What was she talking about? Oh, Ariel. "Corona-" Reyna started but Corona wasn't interested in listening. She was on a tyrannical rant, believing herself to be right about everything. Reyna's heart clenched painfully, each sentence like knives that struck through her chest. Reyna struck out, slapping Corona with all her might. She forgot to hold back, she forgot that she was stronger than Corona, it was a slap that would have made a grown man crumple in the opposite direction. Her mouth was set in a thin line, that heart on her sleeve had shattered, it littered the ground with little flakes of red. Reyna stepped over them, she ground the pieces with her foot. Heart? What heart? Reyna had been a fool to have allowed herself to grow close to anyone. "Tch, pathetic, trying to make me hate you because you feel sorry for yourself." She took a roll from the table and strode towards the door.

Nami moved out of her way, allowing Reyna to leave. Reyna couldn't leave the island, she didn't want to leave the island, her home on Ogygia. No, but there was somewhere else she could go, somewhere no one would think to look for her. The others did not chase her, it was clear that they didn't know what to think. Reyna walked through the jungle, towards the sound of animal calls and through dead patches of trees and grass, where nothing would ever grow again. These little spots had turned into havens for the other girls, they were hiding from their daily duties it seemed and tensed when Reyna found them. She walked through the group, continuing to the other side of the island. By now, Reyna had finished her bread and was clambering up the rocks.

She stopped at the mouth of the cave, looking over the three homes that housed all of the mermaids, both of which were now missing rooms. At one point they had been bursting to the seams, now their numbers were down to only seventy five. Reyna took one last glance before going into the cave and making her way down to the other side, the beach that was deserted of any other mermaid life. It was a place Reyna had discovered while exploring. Not the beach she had took Nami and Corona to during the attack on their island, but another. If you branched right in the cave and climbed up a bit, then back down, you would find a beach with clean white sand and crystal blue waters. "Idiot, that idiot," it was here that Reyna finally allowed her thoughts to flow. She lay on the sand, running her fingers through it. She was far enough from the water that she would not turn, but close enough that it nearly tickled her feet.

"I was an idiot to think that anyone would ever love me," not with that past of her's. Not with those demons lurking around every corner. Her eyes stung with heavy, hot tears that dripped down her face and soaked into the sand. After all, who could ever love a monster?

It felt so good to just gush out every negative thing she could think of and finally say it all to the one person, the only person Corona had ever felt a connection to for most of her life now, the only one that really mattered because no one else was nearly as important as Reyna, no one ever hurt her as much as Reyna did. The slap was like being hit with the weight of a megaton and Corona went sprawling to the floor, her cheek felt like it had exploded, the bone was probably bruised from the impact. "Reyna-" Corona began but Reyna had already left and gone. "Th-that's not what was supposed to-" But what was supposed to even happen? What had she wanted to happen as a result of this mess?

"Yeah, let's just nominate Corona for the worst pick-up artist ever." Nami said in a very disappointed over dramatic way of hers she always did things. "We even set up a bed for you two to have your first love session, and you screwed it all up, Corona!" The mermaid was too dazed from the hit to do anything but lie there and massage the soon-to-be-bruised cheek from Reyna's hand. "So uh, next time, let's just write down that berating her is not the same as saying you love her. Because you do, I can see it." Corona's eyes burned and she fought the feeling off. "Shut up, just let me die. Whatever chance there was, it's broken now anyways." She forced herself back to her feet, feeling dizzy about everything. With a death glare, she made her way out, to go wander and sulk as she pleased.

Hazuki and Asther both had an idea then, and it was all based on a certain piece of technology they had. Namely, a cell phone. Hazuki's was broken beyond repair, but Asther's was still functional, since hers hadn't been on her as Shannon drowned her. "I'll follow her." Asther offered, holding out her cell phone. "I'll record Corona, and then I'll show Reyna, so Reyna knows how she really feels." Because no one trusted Corona to ever say anything nice to anyone unless it was forced out of her, it was just the type of girl she was. With that, Asther began the stalking mission, eventually finding Corona just floating on the ocean, muttering to herself about a great various things. It was so easy to just press record.

"Why do I always say these things?" Corona asked in a quiet, almost pleading sort of voice. "If I'm... if I'm going to kill myself, I don't want - I don't want to die without her understanding me, but now she has the complete wrong idea! Why doesn't she know how hard it is to love her when she was happier as Ariel than she ever was here as Reyna?" Corona wasn't crying, but she was pretty close to it. "I - she's better off with me dead, so I can stop always just dragging her down... I need to hurry up and..." The last word was muffled by the waves but Asther had a feeling it was 'die'.

Well, time to try and find Reyna, she supposed.

The sand was warm, the sound of the gulls crying so comforting. These were the sounds of her home, the sounds of the place that Reyna had missed so much. Sure, Reyna had enjoyed her time as Ariel, but it hadn't been inside of her real body, she had experienced things, but never as herself. No, it wasn't Reyna who had been wanted by anyone, but Ariel. Reyna was a reject, an mercenary who didn't deserve the kindness of anyone. After all, why would anyone be able to love a murderer? Reyna had killed for less. Maybe she should give Corona what she wants and kill her, then maybe she would leave and allow the lack of magic to slowly the drain the life out of her. Reyna could become a mercenary again for a short while, the idea made her laugh. That's right, she could team up with Wolfe and be the dying assassin. "The underworld is where you belong, you murderer." Reyna didn't deserve better, Reyna didn't deserve anything good out of this life.

Reyna dragged herself to her feet and walked along the beach, collecting shells as she went. She collapsed on her knees, picking through them to find the sharpest one. Reyna grabbed a handful of her long hair and began to cut at it, hacking at the strands so that they no longer swept to her ankles. How short had it been when she had met Corona? It had been down to her chin, the length a boy would have had their hair at, but Reyna did not want it that short. Blue strands fell in a pile next to the rock she was sitting on, no longer a part of her. When it was done her hair was jagged and uneven, but Reyna felt lighter. Why was she reacting like this? Reyna had never felt such emotions stirring up inside of her. She wished she could have returned to that emotionless state, she wished that she could tuck these feelings away and use them to fight, but there was no more fighting to do.

Rejected, dejected, stupid, these were only a few of the feelings that made her heart hurt. "I was so stupid, wasn't I?" Reyna hugged herself and sat in the corner, it was almost like there was poison pumping through her veins. "Mama was right about something after all," Mama had been right about love. Not that Reyna could identify this emotion. She closed her eyes, attempting to imagine putting away all of these emotions inside of her, tucking them into boxes that were then stored in the blackest depths of her mind. Today it refused to work, leaving the wounds feeling as raw and fresh as ever.

"If I was reborn and came to meet you, do you think this shredded heart of mine can heal?" The tears were flowing once again. "You see, I was manipulated by someone else and I am intoxicated by that fake pair of wings. It would be so great if I could go back to the way... things... were." She brushed her hair to one shoulder, pressing the scar on her neck onto the cold stone of the rock behind her. The cold helped her think, it helped Reyna pinpoint one emotion that she could wrangle.

"Something needs to be done." Nami said and she was very uncharacteristic here. Usually there was some brevity but there was nothing but gravity in her eyes as she addressed the mermaids at this very special secret meeting. Something was very much going to have to happen if they were going to end up as the happy family they once were before that specific set of sailors ever set food on the island of theirs, their paradise. "Right about now their stress levels are probably through the roof." Shannon warned, remembering the strange self destruct program inside all of their bodies. "If this isn't fixed, they'll both die and none of us will be able to do anything about it." Nami nodded, and then she smiled craftily. "Well, we'll just have to fix that, then, won't we?"

Nami and Hauzki were sent to go and apprehend Reyna while Shannon was the one to go take care of Corona. The goal was to have both girls drugged into unconsciousness with a herbal concoction with similar properties to chloroform. Right about now Corona was holding her old trident with a gun mounted on top, she had a system rigged up so that if she pressed her foot down on the lever it would activate a stick to press the trigger and then shoot the bullet right into her head. After all, the shaft was too long for Corona to really be able to handle on her own. "I'm a monster now, all I'm good for is to die." Corona was breathing hard, eyes shut, she just needed to -

Then there was a gun shot, loud and clear. Except it wasn't from Corona's gun, but from Shannon's, shooting the harpoon away from Corona. She suddenly dashed up to her feet, eyes alert and ready. "Sailors again, is this a joke?" This was ridiculous, they just got back and sailors were here? Well, she'd kill them all here, they wouldn't get Reyna. If Corona was good for anything, this was the last good thing she'd ever get to do for anyone. So Corona sprinted to grab her gun and then someone sprinted faster ending up behind her and then a cloth was shoved onto her mouth. Corona instinctively tried to hold her breath and she struggled but she was beat over the head by a pistol and then finally she could no longer hold her breath, she inhaled and that was that.

Corona woke up later feeling sick and nauseous, finding herself in a strange wooden cabin of sorts, with bars on the windows, there was no way out. She didn't know where she was, but this definitely didn't feel like a boat. "Goddammit, again? Really?" And to make matters worse, Reyna was here too. The plan was to have the girls locked in a room, forced to talk and work together and become a team until they were finally able to team up and break out as a duo. "Reyna, wake up. We got - we're kidnapped again, so..." She froze grit her teeth, looking away. This was going to be a new nightmare.

There had been many times throughout Reyna's life where death would have been preferable to life. Today was not one of those days, but the pain certainly made it feel like it was. Reyna was curled up in a little ball, the pain so bad it made her gasp and shake. She was squeezed in between two rocks, her arms wrapped around her stomach. She had to get back to the house to stop this pain. She needed to find Nami and find out what was happening inside of her. Reyna had made it to the top of the cave when she met someone, or really, two someone's there, both wearing masks and strange outfits. "Who are you guys-" a cloth was shoved in her face and upon one whiff Reyna immediately felt dizzy. It was pushed up against her nose and Reyna readily breathed it, believing that it would end her pain. It was hard to navigate while carrying a person, but well, they managed. They were not going to lose their sister again, not to the terrible poison inside of herself.

"I'm sorry, this is for your own good." Hazuki whispered, placing Reyna inside of the house. "I know!" Nami said, scaring the heck out of Hazuki when she popped in from nowhere. "Here, I think this will make it better," Hazuki changed Reyna's clothes while asleep, "trust me, Corona always gets all flustered," she wiggled her eyebrows and waited for Shannon to come with Corona. The two girls were then locked inside to talk out their feelings. Now all they had to do was wait, it could take an hour, it could take days, or weeks, or years. In the meantime Nami could cook dinner and Ally could continue making improvements on their equipment. The windows had been barred, the door unable to be opened except by key.

Reyna came around about two hours later, sometime after Corona had woken up. She blinked and drew herself upwards, looking around the space, her eyes surveying every window and crevice in the wood until they finally landed on Corona. Wordlessly Reyna stood and began looking around the place, hardly even noticing her change in attire. Her head was hurting terribly and the veins on her right leg were especially prominent. "Need to find an exit," her fingers ran over the wood, trying to find any weak points, but whoever had built this cabin had done a solid job. "No," Reyna groaned, she pounded her fists against the door. "No, no, no!" Reyna hit and pushed and elbowed, but it would not move.

At long last she sunk to the floor, a failure once again. Reyna hid her face in her hands, she did not want to look at Corona, she did not want to talk to the girl that wanted nothing to do with her. Unfortunately there was no escape, the two were going to have to speak to one another eventually.

Reyna woke up and said nothing. Corona didn't have anything to say either, she only wished that she had succeeded in killing herself. With the gun up to her head, it was surprisingly a lot scarier than anything else. It was - it was terrifying, because one move and then everything would be over. It wasn't like letting the poison eat her alive, because at least with that she didn't have to do anything, it was slow and gradual, but it was also an automatic process. But seeing the current situation, the oblivion of the bullet would have been the best option. Reyna was dressed in some strange stupid revealing outfit and Corona couldn't help but wonder why, exactly. She didn't even know where they were, it was just a forest of tress outside the window, which was their only view of anything.

Hours passed with stubborn silence, neither girl willing to even try talking to the other. There was no way out, they were at the mercy of whatever the hell these kidnappers wanted. Corona's wrist lazed up around a weight around her neck and she was very unhappy to find an electric collar around it. Meanwhile Reyna didn't have anything like that, but she was basically naked, which was just as bad. Food came in through a port at the bottom of a very sturdy door, but it was too small for Corona to try and crawl through even when it opened. If they wanted food, they had to return the plates and utensils and all that. There was a separate room, smaller, with a very rudimentary bathroom for their waste, and there was plumbing as well, considering water was available through the sink.

Eventually, tight fell, and the enemies still hadn't come and tried to get anything out of them, they hadn't done anything at all. "You should have let me stay dead." Corona said at last, glaring at her roommate with no kindness in her eyes. "You'd have preferred that, right?" The dark bruise from the slap was still apparent on her face, an angry purple blemishing the otherwise clear skin. Would Reyna reply to this or would she remain silent? Corona rested a hand on her side, trying to ignore the familiar pain of the poison acting up. Well, if this kept up, at the very least she would be granted death eventually. Then she yelped as the collar shocked her randomly for no real reason as far as she could tell.

Eventually she decided that she was sick of something. So Corona tore her shirt off, revealing nothing underneath and tossed it at Reyna without giving her a side glance. "Yours are bigger, so let them look at my disgusting ones instead." She scowled at Reyna and then turned her head away, laying on her side of the room. "Unless you really just want to flaunt your body to our captors." That was when the collar shocked her again and Corona hissed painfully, rubbing at it once the volt was over. In truth it was shocking her whenever she spoke negative hurtful things to Reyna, because they all knew Corona's favorite past time.

It would have been easier if Corona had said something, if she had tried to explain her words from earlier, but instead the two sat in silence. Reyna's breathing became heavier, the poison weighing in her veins, taking its time making its climb. You could tell from the way her veins in her leg were slightly bulging and black, not the color healthy veins would typically be. Not only had Corona taken herself down, but it seemed that Reyna unintentionally might be going with her. Unless Reyna could relock these emotions inside of her and once again become that nearly emotionless girl from the first time the two had met. Out of all of the people she had to be stuck with, it was Corona. Why? What sort of sick joke was this? Hours passed and nothing happened, neither girl talked to the other. Eventually, food was pushed through a slot in the door, a slot that only opened inwards and locked once it was down. There was no way for Reyna to slip her hands through the slot, there was no way for Reyna to unlock the door from the outside.

Eventually, Corona was the first to break the silence. Should have let her stay dead? What was that supposed to mean? "I didn't make that choice," Reyna said at last. "Nami told me to throw the shell into the lagoon and-" she stopped and steadied her breathing, she had to keep the pain out of her voice. She was not going to let Corona see her in pain like this. "and sing that song," Reyna finished at last. "For your information, I was devastated by your death, we all were." That was all Reyna had to say on the subject, she was not going to give Corona the satisfaction of hearing about how Reyna had cried when she died, how she had kept her shell close to her heart everyday so that Corona could have a proper burial. Reyna hugged her legs against her chest, she had yet to touch the food that had been pushed into the room.

It was strange, Reyna was normally a big eater, she loved cooking and enjoying food with everyone, but now, well, Reyna hadn't had much of an appetite since they had been kidnapped. The most she had eaten today was the bread roll she had taken from the table. Was it strange to think that she was satisfied by the bruise she had left on Corona's cheek? Good, it served her right. Corona suddenly took her shirt off and threw it at Reyna, telling her to put it on. Reyna threw it right back at her, "I don't want your pity," she hissed. "You're not doing me any favors, you're satisfying your self righteous martyr complex," Reyna stood and limped over to the window. She balled up on the windowsill and hugged her knees.

"And to think I actually thought we could be friends," to think that Reyna had been foolish enough to believe that Corona could have loved her. That kiss they shared, those tender moments together on the boat when they had thought that they would finally turn to shells, but instead, had lived to see the next four months on the mainland. Reyna hid her face again as tears blurred her vision, she had cried a lot today. Her heart hurt, her head hurt, her body hurt, Reyna was certain that she was going to do in this place.

|| Memories of You || Yumi Kawamura ||

"I was finally at peace, I was at rest." Corona found some semblance of happiness in her fake dreams as she slumbered as a shell, and then being dragged back to life ruined all of that, everything was ruined. Back to the painful reality where love was impossible, where happiness was a lie, where nothing good could ever happen. Even being back on the island, they had ended up kidnapped again somehow. "Even if you didn't choose it, it was your voice that brought me back, you know?" It was boring in here, so she might as well talk about whatever the heck she wanted. if she was going to die, she might as well fill the space with something slightly interesting to talk about, right?

Her decision to rant about what she dreamt of while dead was exacerbated by Reyna literally throwing back the gift. So Reyna really did prefer to just flaunt her stuff for anyone who wanted to see, she was that kind of girl now, wasn't she? She was beautiful, perhaps too much so, and Reyna probably knew it as well. "Heh, you're such a tease." She spat nastily, ignoring the electric jolt as best as she could. Corona let out a brief cough and then continued. "As a shell, I got to imagine a world where you and I somehow got married in the human world, where we never went on the boat in the first place." She was only talking about it because she was bored, there was no other reason for it. It wouldn't be so bad to relive the dream by talking about it, considering death would eventually take them. "I was happy. And then I woke up."

All dreams had to end it seemed, and so did that one. It was getting late, and so Corona decided to just stop talking and wait, calculating how much time she had left if you considered the first time around this happened to her. Reyna too, was in a lot of stress, she was probably suffering the same symptoms Corona was. Not that it mattered anymore, it was obvious Reyna was happy as Ariel and didn't need or want any protecting from her failed protector in the first place. "You didn't need me as a friend, you were happiest as Ariel, so stop pretending to be all sad about -" The shock was stronger this time and she let out a whimper, no matter how humiliating it was, she couldn't help it.

More hours passed and it was super late in the night, nearer to morning now. And Corona figured, well, she didn't have anything else to lose. Why not do something to make things less boring? So she crept to Reyna who was presumably asleep, and then crawled on top of her, spying the bulging vein in her left leg. "You know, mermaids have poison when we're overloaded by stress. We're both dying of it now, y'know?" Corona grinned like a reaper of death. "You already hate me, so I've got nothing to lose." A forceful kiss went down onto Reyna's mouth and then she trailed down, pressing her teeth right on the leg, wondering if she could bite and get rid of the poison, just to take away Reyna's chance of dying happily. And so Corona bit, forgetting or not caring that Reyna was stronger than her.

"Well I'm sorry I ruined that plan for you," Reyna said with biting sarcasm. Her head was throbbing, it was easier not to talk, but she needed to prove Corona wrong. "I take it you didn't die a hero like how the others described you. Is that it? Is that why you're so bitter?" Reyna's cheeks heated up when Corona began to speak of being a tease. "I am? You're the one that tore your shirt off!" Reyna did not want to talk to her anymore, she turned away, looking out the window once again. Corona's next words were strange, she spoke of the two of them getting married in her imaginary world as a shell, saying that they were happy. Reyna's chest felt a pang in it, two girls getting married? Such a thing had never happened in her life time. Reyna had lived in the age where marriage was one man and one woman and anything else was simply ridiculous. How could Corona have been happy?

"So you don't like me," Reyna spoke very softly, "just the idea of me. I should have known," know one could ever love the real Reyna. The dirty, blood stained murderer that she was. Having taken so many lives, both innocent and not, Reyna was surprised that more of the girls didn't hate her. She could have protected more of them, so why were they not mad at her about that? Perhaps they had realized that Reyna was only one mermaid and she could not protect them all. As much as she liked to believe that she was good at what she did, the truth was, was that Reyna was far from the best. Sure, Mama had praised Sixty, she had sold her uses and made profit for all she was worth, but many of the girls that had come before her were ten times the mercenary she was. They were older too and had a wider variety of jobs because of it. "So that's it then? You'd throw life away, you'd throw away your chance to make that dream a reality, all for that stupid hallucination?" Reyna vacated the window and went to lay on the floor to try to sleep this pain off.

Happiest as Ariel? Yes, Reyna had been happy, she had never had a real family before, but she had never been wanted there. They did not want Reyna, the mermaid, they wanted their own child, Ariel. No, Reyna was not wanted anywhere. It made sense all things considered, but Reyna pretended to be asleep, changing her breathing patterns to mimic that of a sleeping person. Reyna wasn't sure why she didn't have one of those collars but quite frankly she was glad, Reyna didn't think she could handle anymore electric shocks. Leo had said that if she suffered anymore of those, she might permanently lose functions that not even magical water could bring back. Reyna had already lost her vision once, she did not want to have to go through that again.

The floor boards creaked, someone was crawling closer. Perhaps Corona had come to her senses, maybe she had realized that Reyna was the same girl, not Ariel, not anyone's toy, but the girl she had fled onto the boat with the day they had met. Reyna tried to make herself smaller, she didn't want to see Corona, she didn't want Corona anywhere near her right now. Reyna would strike her again if she tried anything fishy, but well, she wasn't expecting Corona to crawl on top of her. She most certainly was not expecting the forceful kiss. Reyna did not resist, not until Corona's mouth trailed down to her thigh and she bit into her leg. The mermaid cried out in pain, "What are you doing?!" She quickly pushed Corona off of her, placing both hands over the bite. "You idiot! That's the femoral artery!"

"I killed Ninety." Corona said with crazed eyes. She most certainly was not in her right mind right about now, maybe a part of her had broken from being so close to Reyna for so long, the most painful person on this whole damn world to her. "And then I killed myself because someone who couldn't protect you doesn't deserve to live." That was why she did it, that was the why for everything. She deserved this, she deserved that - it was a wonder she even allowed herself to have that pleasant dream for so long. Maybe it was just because she was too broken to even be able to resist that one bit of kindness the dream offered, that tiny sliver of happiness, no matter how fake and empty it was. "I'm not a tease. You're free to touch, but clearly you don't want to, right?"

Love the idea of her? What did that even mean? Well, it wasn't her place to debate useless things like that anyways. "There was never a chance for it to be real in the first place." Any chance their budding romance had was cut short by the sailors selling them off and wiping Reyna clean, and yet Reyna didn't seem to even care about that one bit. She was happy to just let all the blame rest on Corona's shoulders, wasn't she?

The kiss was - well, it was a kiss, but it was for all the wrong reasons. Yes there was love - or at least, Corona thought it was love - but it was a hopeless love, a desperate love. It was a display of power, to show that Corona was in control, that she was stronger - even if in actual fact, she wasn't really stronger at all - it was dominance, rather than affection. It was her desire to reign Reyna in and make her back to normal, to take away all the bad from before and have things be okay between them, as if that could have ever been possible. It was a hope that had no chance of coming to fruition. "Relax, it's not like my teeth can actually go that deep." Corona said with a sarcastic little bite. "Besides, that's poison running through our veins. We're slowly dying, this pain you feel is just gonna get worse until all your organs turn to dust."

As for why Corona was now this creature that could only spout venom from her mouth rather than happiness and love? If they were going to die anyways, there was no reason to withhold that information. "When you were sold, I became this twisted monster, Reyna. When you were sold, all the good in me was sold too, leaving nothing but this monstrosity behind." The moment Reyna was gone and became Ariel, all hope was lost. "We're both different now, there's no way we could ever make each other happy." A terrible smile grew on her face, accompanied by a like-minded idea. "If we're both dying, why not achieve Heaven? You didn't want to die a virgin, you said that before, didn't you?"
