Hair: Black
Facial Hair: Constant 5 oā€™clock shadow
Eyes: Dark Green
Build: Average height, toned.
Skin Tone: Slightly tanned.
Height: 5ā€™11
Weight: 188 lbs
Voice: [x]
Handed: Right
Body Markings: Rayne has a single large tattoo on his upper right back of a very ornate dagger sticking straight into his heart. The image is quite well done, visceral and not kid friendly.
Scar Tissue: Calloused hands, several small scars cover most of his body, his right arm has burn tissue on his upper bicep.
Unique Body Features: None that really stick out.
Clothing Style: Rayneā€™s work clothes and casual clothes tend to stick together. Rayne is one of those guys whoā€™s seemingly given up on a lot of things over the years, and his appearance happens to be on that list. His common attire usually includes jeans which are either shredded, dirty or both. Black sneakers with some minor detailing adorn his feet unless heā€™s at work at which point theyā€™re replaced by some steel toed brown work boots.

He generally wears t-shirts to everything and anything. Typically theyā€™re form fitting, but on the days where he could really care less theyā€™re baggy and oversized. The only thing that seems to be in any kind of decent condition are his sunglasses. Immaculately polished and gold trimmed. On occasion, heā€™s also known to wear a ballcap, but not often enough to really define him.

Personality The first word that would come to mind when describing Rayne would be sarcastic, quickly followed by pessimistic. Rayne is not exactly the most light hearted person in the world, nor does he view anything in rose colored glasses. He prefers things to be straight to the point, no beating around the bush, and gets aggravated quickly when others refuse to simply tell him what is happening. Coinciding with these traits, Rayne can come across as cold and heartless, even if the irony isnā€™t lost on him due to his last name. He views the world in a harsh lens, and refuses to believe that anything the world has to offer will turn out well, only that some kind of pain is coming in the end.

One could say he was a victim of his upbringing, and while they wouldnā€™t be wrong, he would argue that he simply can see what the world around him actually is. Despite this cynical outlook on life, heā€™s uncharacteristically giving. Heā€™s the kind of guy to give money to a homeless man then chew that man out for not getting a job and yelling at him to buy a suit with money to get said job. He has his own version of kindness, which is often not viewed as such due to his tendency to act like a complete asshole immediately after. As if he has to correct everything and make himself balance.

Rayne has also been bullied for most of his childhood life, and as such has an incredibly thick skin physically, emotionally, and mentally. Not much of anything can make him angry anymore, although annoyance and irritation shows through in equal measure. The best one can hope for when trying to get a rise out of him is a nasty glare or several expletives being shouted at them. He can reign himself in quickly, but doesnā€™t exactly know where the ā€˜lineā€™ is when joking or telling people what may be classified as a harsh truth.

In summary, Rayne is a sarcastic pessimist with his own brand of kindness that borders on grouchy old man syndrome.

Moral Alignment
Neutral Good

Motivation
Surviving and getting by day to day. Rayne doesnā€™t have any particular reason for going on, only that heā€™s not ready for the alternative yet.

Quirks
* Compulsively chews when bored, keeps a pack of toothpicks on him.
* Cracks his knuckles when heā€™s thinking...and they never stop cracking.

Fears
There isnā€™t much that scares Rayne anymore aside from the substandard jump scares that populate modern day culture and media. Heā€™s one of those guys whoā€™s been to the edge and back in terms of mental stability, and now sees everything as something to either be beaten or avoided. If you really got down to it, you could say that Rayne fears Death in its many forms because neither option can be applied to it.

He also hates and fears large insects. Call it irrational, he calls them spawns of Satan.

Likes
* Alcohol in its many forms
* Marijuana
* Hanging around in bars
* Music (Plays guitar)
* Witty humor
* Adrenaline-inducing activities
* Dogs

Dislikes
*Overly serious people
* Being touched
* Bad guitar players
*People eating with their mouths open
* Bringing up his family
* Formal occasions/getting dressed up

Skills
Construction Knowledge: Rayne has been in the construction business for quite some time now and knows the ins and outs of the inner workings of buildings, not to mention expertise with several heavy equipment machines.
Guitar: Rayne has been playing the instrument for several years, and it shows.
Minor Medical Skills: Rayne has gotten himself hurt and/or beaten up many times over the years, and as such has learned how to perform basic first aid. Stitching, disinfecting, patching up all his wounds himself. He hasn't had a need to apply this kind of knowledge onto other people yet, but he would at least know what to do.

Combativeness
Hand-to-Hand Combat:
[Average] Rayne hasnā€™t had any formal training in hand to hand combat, but heā€™s incredibly resilient and doesnā€™t hesitate to form a fist to make an adequate argument to any situation. While he doesnā€™t win every fight he enters, his job and past have forged him into someone who can take quite the beating and keep going.

Melee Combat:
[Average] Rayne likes to hang out in bars, and there people tend not to like it when you smartmouth them. As such, heā€™s learned to use everything and anything in his vicinity in order to make an impact on any opposing party in his vision. Heā€™s not afraid of using weapons, and has become quite proficient in the art of the pool cue.

Ranged Combat:
[Poor] Rayne hasnā€™t had much need or use for a gun. Heā€™s fired a couple over his life, and while he would not hesitate to use one should the need arise, he hasnā€™t had the opportunity to practice with them in years.

Bio/History
Rayne came from a poor family in a district better situated towards crime and violence rather than community and safety. His parents werenā€™t poor, or to put it in a clearer light, they hadnā€™t always been poor. Just prior to Rayne being born, his father was a fairly well off business owner of a small tailor shop that survived off of reputation and word of mouth. His mother was a nurse at the Metro City General Hospital. It wasnā€™t gangs or some kind of freak accident that forced them into the situation where they found themselves, simply put Oscarā€™s tailor shop went under and Vicky simply wasnā€™t able to pay the mortgage on her own. They managed to hold on for awhile, but it wasnā€™t long before they were forced to sell their house and move into a more affordable region of the city.

When Rayne was born, he was brought to a cozy little apartment on the third floor of a five story complex. It wasnā€™t the best home and would soon become more than a little cramped as Rayne grew up, but it was home. Growing up there was tough, especially since their neighborhood wasnā€™t high on the cop patrol list. Many nights were spent listening to car alarms go off, windows being broken, and the occasional scream. Yet to a kid who knew nothing else, this was comforting to him. This was his home.

Rayne was raised as best as his parents could afford, his father being hired on with an office job to do data management. The pay was shit, according to his fatherā€™s words, but the job was secure. There wasnā€™t a chance heā€™d be losing it any time soon. Despite this, they never seemed to have enough to get out of the ghetto, always coming just shy and having something stand in the way of getting back into middle class. Even so, Rayne didnā€™t go hungry and had a roof above his head, something he never took for granted.

It was when Rayne started going to school that things started to take a turn for the worse in his life. For some reason, something he never fully understood himself, he was soloed out from the other kids. They would exclude him from activities, pick on him, call him names, everything in the book that you hear from bully victims. If you asked him now, he would say that he was just well off enough that he stood out yet poor enough that he couldn't go anywhere else. He was in the twilight zone, and whether the other kids knew what that meant or not, it was something they saw as not normal. As such, Rayne didnā€™t have many, if any friends going through school. In fact, the trend continued for many years after that, forcing many fights with people a lot bigger and tougher than him.

It was tough, some days to the point where he would lock himself up and cry, but never once did he complain to his parents or the teachers. They would see that as weakness, something else to poke at him and he wasnā€™t willing to give the other kids any more ammunition than they already had. Every bruise had a story, every cut had a reason, every red faced walk home had an explanation. He learned to be tough on his own, to fight his own battles and to walk the road less taken. While it toughened him up physically and maybe even a little emotionally, it had taken a toll on his personality.

By the time he had reached high school, he was a loner. He barely said two words to his parents, was out at all times of the night, and found himself slipping into a pit as drugs started to enter the picture. By the time he was in grade ten, Rayne was finding solace in cigarettes, marijuana, and cocaine. He became violent at school, threatening anyone and everyone who dared to come after him. It was during this year that he hospitalized two kids and was expelled from his school for becoming a hazard to the children around him. An irony that he found so amusing that thoughts of walking back in there and seeing how many people he could take with him were high on his list of things to do.

Life had other plans for him though, as through this incident, his parents found out about all his other addictions. Things he had managed to hide up until then, which wasnā€™t hard with his parents pulling double and sometimes triple shifts just to stay afloat. His parents werenā€™t devastated, as they revealed that they had their suspicions but no evidence, and started a long road of rehab for Rayne, who was out of commission for roughly three months.

It was during this time that his mother got pregnant, something he always found baffling considering their rising age. An accident is what they called them, although Vicky refused to get an abortion or consider adoption. They were her kids, and good or bad, she was going to look after them. If she was willing to work that hard to fight for an accidental kid, than Rayne could work hard enough to snub his addiction. By the time he walked back into his new school he was completely clean.

Another surprise managed to hit his family when they found out that Vicky was going to give birth to fraternal twins. This news seemed to hit his father the hardest, who doubled his efforts at work in order to pull some sort of extra cash in. When Justin and Karen Heartstock were born, Rayne felt a little different about his family. His parents had always...sorta just been there. Sure, he loved them but not as much as he thought a kid should. With Justin and Karen, it was like a light started up in him as well. In unison with his father, he doubled his efforts at school, and even though he still got into the odd fight, he managed to push through just enough credits to squeeze out his graduation on time. From there, he didnā€™t waste any time getting into the workforce, finding his way onto several part time jobs that equalled out to enough money to help support the family.

Despite this, Rayne quickly found that the apartment they had simply wasnā€™t going to do for space. So he managed to find an even shittier apartment further into the Ghetto and moved himself there against the wishes of his parents. He continued to shove money towards them to help with the kids, and this was the norm for him for the next six years of his life.

He was often too busy to do much of anything, taking what little time he could to sleep, eat, and practice playing guitar. It was his one thing that he allowed himself to do on his free time that didn't directly benefit his parents and the twins. Those years were, despite his living conditions, the happiest of his life. He was productive, he was helping his family get by and felt like he was making a difference. If you asked him about that time now, he would answer with something comparing it to the calm of the storm, if he didnā€™t outright avoid the question.

One fateful day his parents were bringing the twins over to his place to visit him, a routine thing they usually did since Rayne rarely had time to do much of anything working, at the time, three different jobs. When they didnā€™t arrive nearly three hours after they were supposed to, Rayne set about finding them. It was at that time he found out that a drunk driving a fairly large truck ran a red light and t-boned their small car. The collision had killed the twins instantly, his father died just as the ambulance arrived and his mother died mere minutes after being admitted to the hospital.

To say that Rayne was devastated would be an understatement. He lost himself, seeing but not feeling himself read the eulogy for four funerals all at once to a nearly empty hall. Rayneā€™s entire personality dynamic changed, feeling like everything he had tried to do was all for nothing. Nothing mattered. He had pushed himself through hell to do something right by his family, and in one day it was all undone. He got rid of his parentā€™s apartment, sold most of their stuff, and only kept a couple pictures of them. He himself was either fired or quit from all the jobs he had been doing as he went on autopilot for close to a year.

Depression set in pretty hard, but he could never conjure up the will or the courage, however you want to look at it, to put a gun to his temple and pull the trigger. It took him a long time, going through another small bout of alcoholism that nearly lead to death by proxy as he started a fight with a local street gang. Most of the scars on his body, including the burn on his right arm, came from that year immediately after his familyā€™s collective death.

Even after that, some would argue he still wasnā€™t whole. He found himself bouncing from job to job, but eventually he would end up quitting or being fired. When he was 26, on the edge of being homeless and forgotten by the rest of society, he found his way into HCC as a construction worker. It was not entirely mindless, it involved physical labour, and it allowed him an escape from the shit he called life. It was his saving grace, however sad that might seem, but he enjoyed what he did there so he poured himself into it.

To this day, heā€™s still not ā€˜okā€™ in the eyes of people around him, but heā€™s definitely better. Heā€™s still on with HCC and working on construction projects around the city, but has yet to progress up the ladder in any meaningful way. He has enough experience that people around the site take him seriously, some even saying he should be the foreman, but he refuses every time. Heā€™s had flings with some ladies around the city, but he canā€™t seem to keep anything serious or commit. All in all, he may not be in a good place according to the average person, but heā€™s in a definite better place than he used to be.

So begins...
