Marisol Irvine and Mateo Flores were just like the way their baby girl grew up to be; popular. Mateo for being the captain of the baseball team and Marisol for just being Marisol Irvine. People loved and feared her and they couldn't even explain why. She just seemingly lit up every room she was in despite being seen as a mean girl. Val will never face this fact but, there is a lot of similarities between the mother and daughter. The couple was surrounded by people who wanted to both be them and hated them for seemingly having it all. And for a while it seemed like they did, they were in love or as in love as you can be as sophomores in high school. From the time they started dating, they had it all planned out. They were going to move as far away from their small town the second they could and move to New York so Mari could follow her dream as a singer on Broadway, a model, or famous designer. She wasn't picky as long as she was a star with Mateo going to go along for the ride and would figure it out when he got there. Just as long as they were there together. They continued to plan and save up but, you know what they say. Life is what happened when you're busy making other plans. And during their senior year after Marisol had been cast in an off-Broadway production set to open after graduation, they were informed that they were having a beautiful baby girl they would go on to name Valentina Paloma.
To say this threw a wrench in their plans would be an understatement. With the pregnancy, Marisol rarely left the house, let alone perform anywhere anymore and they could barely care for themself. They couldn't take care of a newborn child on their own, thousands of miles away from everything and everyone they've ever known. Not now. Mateo should have seen the red flags from their point on of Marisol's desire to go even if it meant leaving their child to be raised by her grandparents while they continued living their lives. He shrugged it off and decided they needed to settle down in Bosco in order to give his daughter a stable home. At first, they both seemed to really fall in love with their picturesque family. They married soon after high school ended and Mateo got a job as a mechanic for the time being while going to the local community college part-time to get his degree. Marisol, on the other hand, decided to stay home with Val. She never saw herself as the college type and wanted to keep designing so she used Val as her personal babydoll. Still hoping to get back to the life she imagined for herself someday. As she grew up by the age of 3, Val was really drawn to dancing. It kept her centered and gave her an escape from the comments of classmates in response to her weight even as a child. Her parents, mostly her mother, saw this as her opportunity to start living through her daughter. She got her into every dance class imaginable and soon ice skating followed. They were the things the two connected over especially when Val began to start winning. She became Marisol little star and for once, looked in her mother's eyes and saw the one thing that mattered to her: she was proud.
However, it wasn't enough to make Marisol content with their perfect little life. When Valentina was 4 was the first time her mother would pack up and leave with nothing but a note (if she remembered) saying how she needed to go to New York. Claiming what kid of mother would she be if she didn't teach her baby to follow her dreams even if it meant leaving her behind. After a while, she'd come back and promise to stay only to continue the cycle. All while her father became not only her sole parent but her biggest supporter, being the one to tell the young girl how beautiful she was no matter her weight and when to relax when the child would exert herself. Only to be overshadowed by Marisol's constant nitpicks for perfection when she was around. To Val, no one else's opinion mattered but her mother's. She was the big New York star and as a child, Val didn't see anything wrong with her mother's cycle. It was the only time she was even confident and outgoing was when she was with her mother, otherwise, she was the quiet one. She stayed to herself because of it she was picked on and she just took it.
It wasn't until a young Abigail Payne finally pushed her bullies down that she felt like she finally made a friend.
