The pretty-boy from the lobby interrupted them then disappeared into the private room. From the way he addressed the victim's mother, he must have been a boyfriend or a close friend though there was something about him that suggested the former, rather than the latter, to Jack. Which was odd, considering the way he'd been with the red-head outside in the lobby.

With a mental shrug, Jack thought no more about it. If it wasn't related to the case, it was none of his business.

"Jack," he said. "Call me Jack, Mrs Peterson. We need to rule out the possibility that this was a targeted attack; it's unlikely, but it's got to be done. Can you tell me what Alexa did for a living? Why she might have been out in that area of the city? Did she have any enemies that you know of?"

He didn't think for a moment that this was anything more sinister than it appeared. Alexa Peterson had stumbled across a mugging, had taken it upon herself to stand up for the victim and had suffered greatly for that good deed. Karma it was not. Jack didn't believe in any of that bullshit anyway; he known good people die for stupid reasons and bad people live out a life of untouched luxury (despite the efforts of the NYPD to pin something on them). It was all random and to superimpose some kind of supernatural order onto events was to kid ones self.

Lucas did hear Rob's comment, but instead of turning to glare at him or react with anger, he paused in the doorway, resting his hand on the ledge and said calmly, but threateningly, "Don't comment on things you are clueless about. Say what you like about my relationships with Alex's friends - but don't you dare believe any shit you blurt out...I love Alexa." With his back still turned, the young man left the room before either sibling could answer and headed through the hospital corridors down to the lobby.

He couldn't help looking at his feet guiltily as he did so, after all, he'd just lied to Lexy's jerk of a brother in her presence, and about such a fragile situation. He'd have to be more careful around Rachel again, since they'd already caught on. He saw her flaming hair out of the corner of his eye and raised his stubbly chin as he approached her. His heart began thumping just by looking at her, but he couldn't tell if that was because he was attracted to her, or because he was fearfully anticipating the words that were about to come out of his mouth. He felt like the biggest douchebag on the planet - and that was an unusual feeling to him.

His smile was strained as he looked at the girl and took up a shiny, plastic seat beside her. The plastic was harsh against his back as he leant firmly against the wall and he slouched down, closing his eyes. Lucas exhaled loudly, relaxing as much as he could. The most part of his confidence had returned and he sat up, digging his elbows into his thighs and said quietly, "Rachel," his voice sounded impersonal and could even be reffered to as a little cold, but as the situation stood, Lulu wasn't about to shower her with affections. "Can we talk someplace else? This building makes me feel uncomfortable.."

Rachel only watched him as he took the seat side her, he looked tense and worn out and heart broken. He was caught up in something that he shouldn't be and Ray was helping that problem. When he said her name he was distant, cold. Pressuring her lips for only a moment Rachel nodded to him in greeting. She didn't trust herself at the moment. Stay calm Ray. Slow deep breaths. Worry about Lexy. Not your relationship. Lexy. Not Lucas.

Rachel closed her eyes for a moment and took in a slow deep breath and let out a long sigh the same time Lucas did. Normal something like that would make her smile and she make some kind of comment towards him but no today. This time it only make her skin crawl with guilt and anger. "Yeah. I'm parked outside of the ICU." When Rachel spoke, her words were bitter, cut off and full of venom. Snapping her eyes open Ray put a hand over her mouth, shocked at her own reaction. Swallowing, Ray forced her hand back to her knee and balled her hand into a fist, her nails biting in the the flesh of her palm. Stiffly, Rachel stood up and looked at Lucas. He wasn't play with his keys, nor did she hear the normal jingle of them when he moved so he must have ran. "I'll give you a lift home," she said, very slowly, and very carefully. Not waiting on a reply, Rachel began to make her way outside to walk around the Hospital to her car instead of trying to fight her way through again.

"Uh, Rachel," Alexa stared at her friend, then stood up in all her ghostly height. There was no use talking to someone who couldn't see or hear you. But interest and curiously rose when Lexy spotted Lucas just entering into the lobby. "Oh, Luu!" Alexa bellowed out, which would be bitterly silent to them. "You're here, you sweet devil!" Lexy grinned, her heart fluttering with the actual sensation of love towards the guy. But when he walked right past her and directed all his attention to Rachel, Lexy went green with envy, her features twisting up into a displeased pout.

But the fact that the conversation seemed impersonal and sad, Lexy just thought they were supporting each other through this time. If Rachel and Lucas were here, then that meant everyone was here. When Rachel stood up to leave, Alexa took a step towards the corridors, then hesitated and stared at the two. Something was amiss. They never talked with each other around Lexy. With a lingering thought of doubt, Lexy turned on her ghostly heels and projected herself into the corridor her room was in. It was quick, painless, like falling into blackness for a very short moment, then appearing somewhere else.

When she was right in front of the door, she felt a rush of hesitation take over her. So she stood, as still as stone, staring at the white door.

"...Did she have any enemies that you know of?"

Lexy turned her head towards the muffled question that sounded right across the room she was staring at.

"Alright, Jack," she heard her mother speak, and swiftly turned around to look into the room. As soon as she glanced inside, she spotted him, the man that could see her somehow, and as quickly as that, she ducked down, then moved and pressed her back against the wall, listening in instead of looking in.

"She runs a Fashion boutique, and as far as I know, she hasn't harmed a soul. I'm sure you can believe me when I tell you that it's impossible for Lexy to have enemies, maybe people jealous but never enemies as vulgar as those men," Christina pursed her lips in distaste, high class dripping off her every word. "As for why she was out there late at night; walking home, officer. I can assure that's all she was doing; it was idiotic and naive of her, but then again she's always been those two things." It seemed Mrs. Peterson wasn't the sweetest woman in town, but then again, it was perhaps grief talking.

Overhearing that, Lexy couldn't help but grimace, muttering a few words against it, for her own sake. "Moom, jeez..."

Jack nodded, ignoring the older woman's derision of her own comatose daughter. Families worked in strange ways; he doubted the woman would be here if she didn't really care, despite whatever it was she had to say about her daughter's character. He disagreed with her assessment of Alexa Peterson's potential enemies though; having a trust fund didn't exclude one from attracting enemies who didn't.

But that was irrelevant, for the most part. Alexa Peterson, it seemed, had simply been unlucky enough to walk past the wrong alleyway and foolhardy and brave enough to play the hero. The owner of a clothes shop (there was no way he was going to refer to it as a 'fashion boutique' as Mrs Peterson had in her plummy tones) was unlikely to have been involved in organised crime. This was a straightforward case though he doubted that would give any comfort to the people crowded around the bed of the unconscious woman just across the hall.

"Thank you, Mrs Peterson," he said. "That's all I needed to ask you. Here's my card if you think of anything I should know or if you want to contact me about the investigation," he added, handing over a small white rectangle embossed with the crest of the NYPD.

Turning towards the door, opened it, holding it open so Mrs Peterson could pass through the doorway before him.

Before Alexa could fully react, the door to the little office swung open, and the policeman stepped out with his back towards Lexy, clearly holding the door open for her mother to get through. Before Christina could walk through, she stopped in the doorway, fingering the card she was handed. "You'll inform me if the culprits were caught, right?" the woman asked, this time, her voice had softened, but there was still the need for justice ringing in those words. However, without waiting for an answer, the woman walked through the held door and across the hall, stopping at the white door to the hospital room. "Thank you, Jack," she spoke, before disappearing into the room.

That's when Lexy jumped off of the wall to follow her mother, but stop just at the doorway. She had managed to glance inside before her mother closed the door. What she saw was regular, Bea, her brother, her little sister, and no father. A long sigh dropped her shoulders, until she realized Mr. Blythe was still standing in the corridor. She turned around, half expecting him to not be able to see her, and hoping he would. The gaze that she fixated on him was a mixture between doubt and sorrow.

"Hi..." She murmured softly, lifting her hand in a weak wave of greeting.

Jack watched Mrs Peterson go back across the corridor and back into the room where her daughter lay. He turned to leave. But instead he found something very unexpected blocking his way.

"Er- Hi?" he replied, nonplussed for a moment. The woman from the crime scene was there, standing in front of him wearing a look of curious sadness on her pretty features.

Soon though, he regained his senses and moved towards her, his expression set.

"I don't know what you're doing here... Or how the hell you found out about what hospital the poor girl's been taken to," he began. "But you're coming with me for questioning. If you refuse, I'll have to arrest you for obstruction of justice-"

He'd reached out to take her arm and march her back out of the ward away from the patients and Alexa Peterson's room; the sister at the other end of the long room was already looking up at them from the nurse's station. But to his bewilderment, his hand passed straight through her. There was that odd unsettling sensation of pins and needles that tight-rope-walked the boundary between tingling pleasure and mild pain, the one he'd felt before at the crime scene.

Jack stared and tried again. The same thing happened. His hand met no resistance and her form wafted out of the way as if he'd passed through through whorls of smoke before her arm reassembled itself again.

"I- I think I need more sleep," he managed finally.

Aha, so he could still see her. His expression, the way his eyes settled right on her face when he turned. She knew then that he was the only one able to see her. He replied to her greeting, and seemed rather lost for a moment, then just like that he moved towards her. Lexy, however, took as step back cautiously.

"I don't know what you're doing here... Or how the hell you found out about what hospital the poor girl's been taken to," --- "But you're coming with me for questioning. If you refuse, I'll have to arrest you for obstruction of justice-"

If Alexa would have been expecting the grab, she would have moved away, but just like that, she simply flinched when his hand went through her arm. The sensation was bitterly lonely. As if someone was trying to communicate with her, but was unable to. "Listen," she then spoke up, her chin lifting up slightly, "Just go in that room and look," Lexy demanded, breezing past his side. She stopped in front of the white door, glanced at him for a long moment and motioned for him to follow. Then just like that, the blond went through the door into the room without physically opening it.

What she saw inside couldn't have stopped her in her tracks, Mom was there, her siblings, Bea as well. In those few moments of scoping out the room, her gaze reached her body on the bed, as pale as death while she was naturally tan. Her hair looked darker, slicked back and oily. She looked disguising, she mused. The braid was a nice touch, though, thanks to mom. Lexy whipped her head back to glance at the door if Jack actually followed her into the room. He could think of something clever to explain to her mother as to why he was still there, couldn't he?

Bea found herself frozen outside the door to the room, feeling a sensation close to what might be called fear. It wasn't until Christine came out and threw her arms tightly around her slender frame did Bea finally snap back into reality, offering the woman a lopsided vague smile. The familiarity of her best friend's mother's voice seemed to comfort her in the slightest, and she swallowed the nervous lump in her throat, gesturing to Lexy's still body. "She's alright?" she nodded as if answering her own question. She didn't want to face the fact that her best friend was in a coma right before her eyes, with the risk of not waking up.

Bea finally mustered up the courage to walk into the room, strides slow, eyes glued to the patient's bed. She wrapped her arms about herself and looked around after a moment, compressing her lips and licking them before her gaze fell onto Rob. She didn't speak a word and it was obvious that the emotions building up inside of her wished to overflow in tears, but her face was serious, no sign of damp eyes; the only thing that gave her feelings away was the obviousness of her muscles being tensed.

Lucas followed the redhead down the corridor and towards a pair of glass doors; a window for those outside to watch over the sick. He trudged along in silence, unable to think of anything but the lean, athletic pair of shoulders that Ray bore. Her skin was as pale as Alex's was tanned, and where Ray was realistic, positive, funny and caring; Alex was a dreamer, a gorgeous one, but needy and bossy, a blabber mouth. Rachel's firey hair bounced as she walked, her hips swaying slightly, and her usually confident and open posture was slightly hidden, curled and scared.

They reached the glass doors and Lulu stepped firmly in front of Ray, shoving open the door in a brutish manner with his muscular, footballer shoulders. It wsa a considerate gestgure, but he didn't meet Rachel's eyes as she passed him, her curls tickling his stubbly chin playfully and her freckled arm brushing against his chest. He almost regretted doing so, as an urge to grab her waist and swing her round, laughing and teasing, as he always did, pulsed through him.

He shivered slightly as they stepped out into the open air, but despite the chilly breeze, it was a beautiful sunny day. The clouds were rolling in from the north though, so Lulu continued towards Ray's little car, which he recognized immediately - it's a unique car.. he thought with a smile. He felt a little strange at the thought of climbing into her car, though he'd done it a million times before. He'd driven it. They'd even had sex in it! He bit his lip to hold back a small smirk as he remembered that, and met Rachel's eyes across the roof. He smiled sheepishly, as he always did when he was confused or feeling a little downhearted. It usually meant that there was trouble brewing, but Lucas was clueless as to what might happen next.

The car chirped as it unlocked, and he lifted the handle and clambered in. He kicked his feet up casually onto the dashboard as always and murmured softly, "Thanks for the lift, Ray.." Lucas was gradually feeling more relaxed as the things he was familiar with comforted him - Ray and her little car with his feet on the dashboard being a few of them...

The brunette exhaled and folded his arms behind his head, "Can we just drive about for a bit..? I guess I'm still in shock, and..." he paused, before deciding honesty was key here, "your presence is normal.. comforting-.. familiar." His chocolate brown eyes glanced hopefully over at Ray, who was sitting with her hands latched firmly to the steering wheel. His eyes asked a silent question, Is it okay that I feel that way..? What are we going to do?

Had Jack been a more argumentative person, he might have tried to berate her into telling him why she'd followed him to the hospital. If he'd been a more stubborn person, he might have simply turned around and walked out of the hospital, refusing to believe what his own eyes had just witnessed.

Instead, he watched her disappear (and there was no other word for it; she seemed to dissolve through the door into the room beyond) then did as he was told. He felt instinctively that she was telling the truth; there was something in that little side-room that would explain why she was here, why he couldn't touch her and why no one else seemed to be able to see her. He sat back and let the current take him.

He knocked briefly on the door to the side-room then stepped inside, holding out another card from the stash in his pocket.

"Sorry, Mrs Peterson; I've just realised the card I gave you has my old cell number on it. Take this one- it's my current number," he said, not giving her a chance to interrupt placing the card into her hand. Maybe she wouldn't even notice that the cards had identical numbers on.

In the moment between handing the older woman the business card and closing the door again, he glanced around the little room. Another girl; ash-blond and tearful- a friend or a sister perhaps- and a man, about Jack's own age with the build of a heavyweight boxer stood either side of Mrs Peterson. The bed around which the whole room was centred was a steel-framed monster with a thick mattress and starched sheeted, wires and tubes snaking out over its sides like vines overgrowing a window box. The blonde woman with the red lipstick stood beside it, wearing that same disconcerting look of anger, loneliness and sadness she'd given him out in the corridor. And Alexa Peterson, the occupant of the bed...

Jack barely managed not to do a double-take before nodding to the others in quiet respect and shutting the door on the static scene. Once outside, he walked briskly to the end of the ward and waited outside its double doors in the now-empty lobby, his head fuzzy with disbelief.

The blonde and Alexa Peterson were one and the same. A mirror image had looked down on her paler, sleeping other self with emotion that her twin was unable to express. Had he really been talking to a comatose woman?

He decided to let Alexa herself answer that question.

Left. Right. Left. Right. One foot in front of the other. Just keep moving, don't look at him, don't acknowledge him. Just keep moving. Rachel walked towards her car, keeping her shoulders back and eyes forward. With every step she took Ray could feel Lucas right behind her and that bothered her on a deep level, but what bothered her more was how it comforted her. Turning a corner, Ray's gray Chucks squeaked slightly scaring Rachel some and knocking her mind off the happy blank slate it was trying hard to hold on to.

Approaching the door Lu took three big steps and shouldered the door open for her and held it open but his eyes were in the distance but his posture seemed a bit more relaxed as soon as the fresh non sterilized air hit him. Her blue eyes locked on his face for a moment as she passed and gently brushed against him, her finger tips lightly trailing from one hip to the other and her arms brushing his chest. A smile played at her lips for only a moment but once she was no longer in physical contact with him her heart fell away with her smile. Rachel looked up at her VW, a soothing sight really. It was full of memories and small pictures stuck all over the car in random areas. The worst part was that the last time she was in her car with Lucas things got a little steamy. I'm pretty sure his boxers are still in my back seat. Biting the inside of her mouth Ray unlocked her car and it chirped.

Ray reached down and pulled her door open and tired to sneak a glance at Lucas to get a reading, but what she found here his hazel eyes looking right at her. Her heart began to beat a little faster and her face flushed some. When he smirked at her she returned the same smirk, knowing that by their faces alone they each knew that neither of them knew anything. With a soft sigh Ray lowered herself into her seat and closed the door. Lu was already in his position, leaning back in the seat, his feet up and his eyes on her. "It's no problem. You know that Lulu," Ray mumbled back to him. Flicking her key open she started her car and sat back in her seat while she listened to Lucas talk. Just his voice was soothing, but when he finished, she wasn't sure how she felt.

Gripping hard at her wheel, Rachel stared at the backs of her hands for a moment, studying them while she digested what he was saying. "That's fine. I. I kinda feel the same way, but at the same time I feel like one of my damn students with this-" Rachel gestured to Lu, herself and then the Hospital meaning Alexa, her eyes still down, glancing at Lucas once and a while trying to read him, but all she got was that he didn't know himself and she didn't either. "-drama." Looking at him Rachel felt her brows furrow together as her mind raced, "Lucas, I don't know if I want to hug you, if I want you to hold me, kiss me or if I want to beat the living shit out of you." Rachel laughed and put her head back against her head rest and stared up at her closed sun roof. Closing her bright blue eyes she took in a slow deep breath then let it out and rolled her head to look at Lucas and gave him a weak and confused smile. "Sure, we'll drive for a bit Lu. Let me know if you want me to take you home or back at my place. I still need to call the school and call out for tomorrow."

Sitting up again, Rachel threw her car into gear and pulled out of the Hospital and swung a left to head towards the down town area just so she could drive. Reaching for her radio she turned on her music and her new Linkin' Park cd began to softly play "Across the Line". The lyrics made Ray want to laugh and then to hit something. But that didn't matter. She quietly sung along, "He was fragile. And frozen. When the bullet took away his friend."

Alexa, or perhaps the ghost of Alexa stood at her own side, at first staring at her unconscious body, then at her mother's back when the door was knocked on and Jack briefly stepped in. He followed in, and that calmed her heart a bit. She'd been standing by the door, behind it, catching Jack's gaze, then allowing him to see her body laying in the hospital bed. She wanted to say something, but as if unable to disturb the peace in the room, she was silent. It wasn't until Jack closed the door and Alexa was left alone with her mother, her sister, Bea, and Rob. Nothing out of the ordinary, of course.

Slipping through the door once more, Alexa found herself empty in the corridor outside. Quickly she projected out into the lobby, appearing a few steps behind him. "I'm as confused as you are..." she began, disturbing the early morning silence in the lobby, to him only. If she startled him, she didn't mean it. Nor did she mean to follow him, as if she knew he wanted an explanation.

Lucas listened to Ray mutter nervously for a moment before he averted his wide eyes from her, knowing it was making her a little uncomfortable. "You probably should tryand beat the shit out of me," he said with a grin, knowing he could take her in a few moves even though she was quite a tough little lady - something he'd always been attracted to, "-but we know how that would end... Just like that last fight we had." His voice trailed to an almost seductive, inaudible whisper - he was referring to last week in the car. They'd fought, Ray had screamed and after almost a full 10 mins, Lucas simply grabbed her waist and pulled her into a deep, ferocious kiss, which had then led to last week's fumbling in the back seat of the very car they were seated in. He laughed heartily, turning to see if she were smiling with him, which to his pleasure, she was.

"The thing that scares me the most-" he began, the smile fading to a smaller, more honest, one. "-is how well I understand you. With Alexa, it's fairly simple, but I often get her wrong or she misunderstands me. But with you... if you are angry you will shout, if you are sad you'll look so, if you want to call me up or talk, I'll know. I know you and you know me." Lulu could hear himself begin to corner his decision between Ray or Alex; one which he wasn't ready to make. He paused, trying to think what to say. "..We're honest, right? I get you. I know your fidgety little habits and the way you walk, the way your hair looks flatter and smaller in the mornings, your favourite foods and when you like to eat them, the things you like to do in bed, the way you smile, the sound of your laugh, your favourite places to be and to read or do.. And now I know your face when you cry, and you know mine."

Lucas wasn't looking at her anymore, he was just talking aloud in hope that she was hearing him, and gazing at the battered corner of a white peice of paper tucked under the mirror/sunshield on the roof. He reached up suddenly and tugged it out. It was a photo. A picture of Ray and Lucas, his arms around her shoulders, and hers around his waist, and they were both laughing. Rachel's hair was blowing wildly in the wind, and they were bundled in coats and scarves from last winter. He grinned and held the photo up to the redhead, meeting her eyes and smiling at her with an affectionate way.

With the picture still gripped tightly between his bitten nails, Lulu reached into his pocket and pulled out his pack of ciggarettes. "I know you hate me smoking in your car, but I'll put the window down - I need one." He said with a smirk, finding it difficult to talk with the ciggy between his lips. He picked up the lighter, one he'd left in a small compartment of Ray's car, and lit it up. Taking a deep breath, he exhaled out the window, and it was silent. Only the sound of their breathing and the racing of cars outside.

Rachel turned on the radio - a Linkin Park CD and began whispering the lyrics. Lucas turned to her in pleasant surprise, but she wasn't looking at him. She stared ahead at the road, driving smoothly past the other cars and cyclists. He joined in, his rough, throaty voice, murmuring the lyrics along with her higher, sweeter voice as it reacher the faster verse. "He's pulling his weapon to his side, Loading it full of his Goodbyes.."

"Holding an enemy across the line..." It was strange how easy it was to forget about the horrors of what happened to Alexa, how a good friend was fighting for her life, locked in a coma and here Ray was, diving around with Lucas, Alexa's boyfriend and her- her. She wasn't sure what to call him. Her lover? No matter, Rachel knew it wasn't right. Unable to really think about it Rachel just listed to Lucas sing alone with her, the smell of his cigarette make her wrinkle her nose in disgust, but it was one of the only things about him she couldn't stand. Well, that and how he was still with Alexa, but Rachel was just as much to blame as Lulu was.

Listening to him talk about her, and Alexa, it made her heart race but she still wasn't sure if that was a good thing or not. It was a tough spot and the selfish part of her wanted to keep Lucas, to keep what they two of them have. If he did chose to stay with her, Ray were sure things would be easy, comfortable like they were now. No sneaking around, watching their backs. No more pretending like they didn't really know each other when Alexa was around. If she'll ever be around again. Rachel stopped singing at that thoughts and locked her jaw, her eyes narrowing slightly on the road as she fought back her dark thoughts.

"So, you still think you can kick my ass hm?" Glancing over at Lucas Rachel gave him a small smile, trying to distract herself again. But all that did was bring her to last week when she fought with him and exactly how his boxers ended up in her back seat. "I don't know. I usually take it easy on you just so I don't bruise your massive ego," this time Rachel gave a full fledged smile, unable to help herself. She enjoyed teasing and rough housing to start with, but it was always fun with Lu because he enjoyed it just as much as she did. Taking a right Rachel glanced at her dashboard clock and sighed. "I need to get my phone and call the school. There's no way I can deal with a bunch of 8th graders today. Want me to take you home or wanna ride to my place?"

Although Jack knew she'd follow him, he jumped all the same when she appeared behind him. He turned around, his hands deep in his pockets.

Confused as he was? That had to be an understatement. Jack had never really put much thought into what he believed about what happened to you when you died so to be confronted with... the soul of a woman he'd seen lying comatose in a bed just moments before was a concept that was completely alien to him and he was shaken by it. But to have it actually happen to yourself? He couldn't imagine how she must be feeling.

"I don't get it," he said softly. Somehow it didn't seem appropriate to talk in the same way he had done to her back at the crime scene, when he'd thought she was a nuisance rather than an impossibility. "Why can't anyone else see you? Your family or your friends?"

At the back of his mind, he was aware he wanted to find a logical excuse as to why he thought he could see her. Lack of sleep, too much coffee or maybe he was just going plain old crazy. But this felt too real to not be real. Was that an excuse crazy people made? Did their hallucinations seem as real to them as she did to him?

He decided to stay away from such existential questions and stick with what he knew. He knew he could see her and he wasn't about to pretend he couldn't. The question of why it was only him that appeared to be aware of her remained, however.

"It's not like... I'm psychic or anything," he said, sheepishly, running his long fingers through the hair at the back of his head. "I don't make a habit of seeing d-" He paused, realising he'd made a mistake. "People who are in comas. You're my first," he added, with a weak grin.

"You're asking me? I should ask you why the hell you can see me and no one else can," Alexa felt criticized, then as quickly as letting those string of words leave her mouth, she actually let a pout cross her features, muttering a soft 'sorry' before beginning again. "Clearly you're not psychic..." She sighed, crossing the room to sit down in a chair. She was able to sit down, but couldn't feel the chair beneath her, perhaps a memory trigging off her soul to materialize. "What should we do then?" she watched him with empty, hopeless eyes. "I mean, what should I do? I wasn't implying that you should help," she uttered it quickly.

Meanwhile, Rob was having trouble picture his sister in any other way than in the hospital bed. A long sigh slipped past his lips before he turned to Bea who had entered the room previously. With a heavy arm, he draped it over her shoulders and tucked her to his side, an affectionate behavior, but one of shared grief.

Jack raised his eyebrows as Alexa snapped at him but let her apologise and go on. She'd been shot and separated from her comatose body, for god's sake; he was happy to cut her some slack.

"I- I don't know," he said. He still wasn't entirely sure she existed, let alone feel able to come up with a way out of her unique predicament. But that seemed rude to say to her face. "Maybe you just have to wait. Until you, well your body, wakes up..."

He didn't mention the possibility that she might never come round at all.

"I guess you could come back with me," he said, finally. "If you want company. I'm going to head back to the station to file this report then go home." Thankfully, Lucy wasn't coming over tonight; Jack wasn't entirely sure how he would explain the fact that the spirit of a comatose girl was stalking him to his girlfriend. "I'll be back here tomorrow, though," he added, conscious that she might want to stay around her family.

He paused for her to respond. He didn't get it- why him? Why not her boyfriend, her brother or her mother, someone who she had a bond with? It wasn't as if he was even the first one at the crime scene when she, er, left her body. Why not a bystander or one of the paramedics? There seemed to be no logic to this strange unexpected twist to what had been an otherwise ordinary day. He let the questions go; it didn't matter now. What had happened had happened. She would have probably preferred the company of the good-looking man from the lobby to that of a random cop who just happened to be assigned to her case.
