Description

My Name Is Kalie Nicole Ringer .

Image

I Am 18 Years Old.

I Am A
Female .

I Came Here Because I am an audience member .

What Am I Like? Well... Kalie tends to be reserved, a loner of sorts, connected to her notebooks and pens more than her fellow classmates at her various schools. She is interested in people though, curiosity always rampant, documenting her people watching and sometimes unnerving those around her with her stares. Friendly though and kind, she values loyalty and laughter, silently wishing she could find a strong connection to someone living instead of characters in some of her stories. Likes: gummy worms, sunsets, the smell of a new book, reading. Dislikes: small spaces, being out of ink, writer's block, liars. Fears: Ending up alone because of her lack of social skills. .

My Life Has Been Interesting. This is How it Went Born to a single mother, Kalie grew up with a string of different guys entering several different front doors over the years. Her mother moved them around a lot, a free spirit of sorts and never one to settle down. Kalie took up writing down stories and observations when she first learned to read and write at the age of three. She lived in her leaning towers of notebooks, fantasy worlds and interesting people lining the pages in blue, black, green and red inks. She is a smart kid and adaptable because of moving around, though she wonders a lot if she had stayed in one place if she would have found a liken spirit to herself. .

Wait! One More Thing!

Writing Sample?

Kalie reread the pamphlet. Freaks. Well, it sounded like her kind of place to be.

It's Tuesday. Raining a bit, clouds a dull gray like mom's car. I graduated yesterday. I don't feel different.

People watching was one thing, but freak watching? She wondered what the freaks were exactly, the paper laying beside her not giving too much detail. She stared at the extravagant font and coloring. A moving freak show. Hmm...

I remember feeling different after getting my period for the first time, only because mom looked at me differently, a slightly concerned look in her eyes. I wish I looked like her. She's beautiful with blonde hair and blue eyes. I'm like my father, I'm guessing. No pictures. Why doesn't that woman have any pictures? Grr so annoying. But I must look like him. Black hair...green eyes...I wonder if he was handsome. Like a chiseled movie star or a buff spy. I sound like a child...

That was it, she decided. She was going to the Freak show. Transportation wasn't important. She could take the car since her mom would be out on a date weekend with Chad. Kalie resisted a gag at the thought of that greasy guy and his foot long ponytail hanging off his head like a whip. Any distraction from that image was a nice one.

She glanced around the park, pen hovering over her journal and noting a black lab chasing a yellow frisbee under the light rain drops. He was carefree and happy, his dog smile bright as he rushed to his owner.

Maybe I should have been a dog.

So begins...

I always arrive early. Which doesn't run in the family, that I know of...Maybe I'm some sort of freak of nature. Sigh...all I do is write...wouldn't be the first time someone's said that's weird.

Kalie sat in the driver's seat of her mom's gray car, notebook and pen in hand, glancing to the mobile zoo entrance. Not many others had arrived, a family with two kids, a teenage couple. They had started making their way over to the ticket booth, but Kalie waited. The zoo wasn't open yet. Standing around with those other guests didn't seem like the most fun, so she watched them from here, the two kids practically bouncing up and down in their matching blue and black tennis shoes.

I'm not in a freak zoo though, so does that mean I'm not a freak? I wonder what these things are anyway...

She wondered what she would discover here and what she could write down for her stories or simple observations. Without the AC running, the heat was building in the car, so she finally let out a sigh, closed her notebook, pocketed the pen and got out the car. Pushing her black low pigtails behind her shoulders, she slowly started for the entrance, checking that her wallet was indeed in her black bag.

The family was buying tickets. Then the couple. Kalie approached and smiled slightly as she was given her ticket as well.

Here goes nothing, she thought, wondering what her mom and that dirt bag of a boyfriend of hers were doing right now.

Dawn sighed, looking around at the huge but empty enclosure. She was sitting up on an air conditioner, which was at the very top of her cage. She should probably be changing into her costume, or practicing, but she wasn't really fond of either. Her costume was simply a white dress with gold colored rhinestones placed here and there, and a pair of golden ballet flats. But her routine she did wasn't much more interesting. She would fly around, did tricks in the air and such. And then proceed to sit and talk to younger children, answering questions of older people. Then finally, towards the end of the day (when her enclosure was mostly populated) she would show off a couple of her mind reading tricks. It never disappointed.

“Besides, next she’s gonna be talking to Herrick you don’t want to miss that do you. Likewise she’ll come here soon and we need to figure out how we are gonna treat her.” It was Arabella and Lilith, who had an eclosure right next to her own. They happened to talk, a lot. And she heard every word of it. Apparently, now some lady was going to talk to Herrick. Dawn was quite fond of Herrick. After all, he was one of the few originals that persisted, besides herself. Well, actually, he had been here a bit longer.

"If you two don't mind me interupting your talkshow, you should probably be practicing," Dawn called, her voice echoing around her own enclosure. She could hear them, they could hear her. It was both a gift and a curse.
---
"Hello, Miss Avarella. It's required for you to get to all of the freaks, so you have to get to at least half of the freaks now, the other half can be done around 11:00. By then, almost everybody will be having lunch." Jack said, staring at the new doctor. He refused to call her by her silly nickname, it made her sound like a freak herself. Looking into the cage, he could see the spider girl practicing her routine. The same one she did every single day. "Change it up a little, Widow. Your boring both me and and the guests." And with that, he was off again.

"Welcome to the zoo! You are in store for quite a surprise. So if you haven't already, come up and buy a ticket. Those of you who have a ticket, come on in!" A 'friendly' smile lit up The Owner's face as he opened a gate. He took the tickets of a family, a couple, and a girl with pigtails. And yet, even more were coming. They were all waiting in the growing line. More were approaching too, coming from the fenced off area of grass he had called a parking lot.

"Don't forget your tickets!"

Kalie shuffled along, not bothering with a map and decided to turn right, then left, and stopped in front of an exhibit with bars. Black Widow. Interesting. Expectedly, this exhibit was spider related, a girl with spider abilities. Kalie tilted her head. So that's what this place was. Humans...mutated...

How would having spider abilities help me? Kinda sounds suckish really. Spiders aren't scary but...eh, they kill bugs I guess. Does this girl kill bugs? Her hair reminds me of someone...wonder if she eats bugs too...

Kalie watched the act a bit. Then moved on. Now that she knew what this place was, she had a weird pit in her stomach. This wasn't a zoo. It seemed like torture.

Romulus. Romulus and Remus. The myth of Rome's creation. Seeing the abilities of a canine didn't surprise Kalie either. She watched him pounce around and howl a bit. She even smiled. He appeared to be having fun with it.

Maybe dog abilities wouldn't be so bad.

As some customers moved on after Romulus' performance, she stuck around, taking down notes about his appearance and smiling. He seemed more at home than the spider girl.

Salem growled endearigly while the audience moved on. All except one girl. She was wrting something in some book. He strolled over to the bars and leaned his head into them, letting his nose pass inbetween. He subconsciously sniffed her. This was just something that he did instinctively. He looked down at her, she was significantly shorter than him. He gave a small smile.

"Shouldnt you have stayed with the group?" He smiled wider. "I could be dangerous." He reached his hand trough the bars and extended his claws, twirling his hand next to her shoulder. "You never know." he grinned. He kind of enjoyed talking to the people who came to see him. He was willing to admit he sometimes went to far and frightened them.

His smile remained as he drew his hand back through the bars. The claws retracted. "sorry about that. Got a little excited, not many peope stick around after the show." he laughed and dropped to his knees and sat on his feet.

Kalie remained still, watching the claw near her shoulder with interest. Fear zipped down her spine, realizing just how dangerous such a stupid act could be. But the boy retracted, smiling and crouching down with a small smile.

Sorry about that. Got a little excited, not many people stick around after the show.

The corner of Kalie's mouth lifted. "You're fine," she replied. "I thought the uh...show...was great. Really great." She wasn't sure what else to say without seeming rude, but it came out seemingly of its own free will. Gripping her pen tightly, she blurted, "Why are you here?"

She closed her mouth at once. They probably didn't like to be asked. But it seemed to horrid! Why would anyone want to be caged and perform like this? Or...were they forced?

Suddenly sympathetic, Kalie's eyes grew wide with sadness, a frown forming on her lips. Wanting to speak, she tried to find words, but felt she had already said too much.

Salem bounced back and forth from foot to foot. He grinned at her question. He bounced up from his squatting position to stand straight. He then proceeded to lean backwards on the cage, turning his head to her. "That, my curious friend." He began with a sigh. "Is not a difficult question." He shrugged himself off the bars and started pacing the cage excitedly.

He tapped his hands on his thighs as he paced. "but before I answer it." he turned to her. "Tell me your name?" He smiled. He was havng fun with her. It wasn't often that people were interested in him. and the ones who usually stayed behind just wanted to see another show. This girl was different. She kept looking down at that notepad of hers. He couldnt help but wonder what she was writing down.

He supposed it was rude to ask her name bfore giving his own. "You know me as Romulus, but outside my cage I'm Salem." He approached the cage and reached through it once more, this time requesting a handshake. He winked. "No claws, promise."

"Oh uh...Kalie," she replied, accepting the handshake without worry. For some reason she knew he meant no harm and would keep to his promise of "no claws."

Salem. Salem witch trials...Salem the cat on Sabrina the Teenage Witch...Salem Massachusetts...It's an interesting name. Wonder why his parents named him that...

Kalie wondered if he truly would answer her question or was just messing around. He seemed to be, in a playful, happy to have someone around, sort of way. It was good to see that he could have fun with his situation, but she still felt odd about watching him through bars, dangerous claws attached to him or not. He wasn't a threat, it appeared anyway, so why should she have to accept his handshake across a boundary?

Being caged for being unique. Difference squashed down by powerful hands, money filled hands. Such a cruel world. Screwing us all over.

She tried not to look uncomfortable or upset. But the situation greatly granted such.

He drew his hand back through the bars. She didnt seem to fear him... she seemed more... intrigued. He grinned and backed away from the bars. He scratched his ear furiously with his left hand. Damn fleas. They came by very now and then, at least he was smart enough to know how to get rid of them. He ceased scratching and approached the bars once more. She was eyeing the bars.

"Ahh, My story" he forgot what she had originally asked for. He took a deep breath. This wasnt something he liked to relive. "You see... The great thing about animals... is their instinct. They know when and how to use their various abilities to survive. Or to protect. The wolf especially." He didnt like to give his exact story, but he could give her an explanation so she could draw her own conclusions.

"Wolf packs are tight. Most have a bond that no human can comprehend. Any single member would protect the pack regardless of the consequences." He reached into his pocket and produced a pac of 5 gum. He selected his piece and began chewing. It calmed his nerves.

"My particular.... mutation. It gives me the traits of a wolf. I have all of these studious things like the claws, and the teeth, but I was also gifted with the wolf instinct." He paused. "When someone I care for is in danger, or is hurt, these instincts kick in... and I cant control myself."

He turned once more to look at her. "Long story short... I'm dangerous."He reached through the bars and extended his claws. He twirled the hand in front of her agan. "I'm not normal... and I'm scary." His eyes changed color. They were now bright yellow.

He touched her cheek with his fingers. He could feel her stiffen up. This may have been cruel, to scare her like this. But she had to know what he was about.

"So I stay here. Where I can't hurt anyone. I'm no prisoner, I'm here by my own choice." He trailed off as he returned his hand. He turned to walk away. "Sorry if I scared you." She was a nice girl. Unfortunately he would probably never see her again. Once he zoo moved on she was gone forever. "Nice meeting you Kalie."

"You too Salem..."

Self-perception, he sees himself as dangerous. Is this the work of his actions or others' projections? Not much to go on...

Kalie remained in front of Salem for a long time, just watching him, analyzing his words. He was here to protect people...

"Salem...how did you come to be...the way you are? Were you born this way?"

She was genuinely intrigued by this whole concept of "freaks." Was there a correlation with all the "exhibits" here?

"I dont mean to be rude but...its fascinating really." Without thinking, she leaned against the bars, continuing to write and smile to him.

Salem had retreated to a corner of his cage. But she hadnt left. He kind of expected her to bolt after his last display, but she seemd much more intent on getting informaton now than ever. He smiled and reapproached her. He leaned on the bars where she was doing the same, so he was eye to eye with her.

"Why so curious Kalie?" he blinked a few times. He tried to figure her out. What could be in that head of hers that made her so intereted in him. No one but the owner and other freaks had gotten this close to him without running away scared. Not since the accident anyway. He eyed her. What does she want with me. Seth backed away from the bars.

He disregarded his question and moved onto hers. It didnt matter why she was interested anyway. He was, as most would say, an open book. He didnt keep too many secrets. And it was nice to talk to somone who wasnt a "caged animal."

"anyway." he drew her attetion. "I wasn't bitten by a radioactive wolf, so sorry, no comic book ideas here. and I'm not one of your Twilight werewolves." He smacked his gum. "In all honesty I dont know why I am what I am. It first aired its ugly head in highschool, but I'd been feeling different my entire life. I'm not sure what the catylyst was that brought it all out."

He smiled. "Sorry I can't divulge the entire history of us "Freaks"," he air-quoted the word. " but I hope I helped a bit" this time h didnt walk away. He simply kept his eyes on her, still trying to work her out in his head.

He remained nearby and she watched him, accepting his words and pen hovering above the notebook in the crook of her left arm. Was he put off by her presence? It seemed like it, but he wasn't telling her to go away, so maybe she was imagining things.

A crowd was forming around his exhibit again and Kalie sighed, not liking so many people around at once. Before she could move though, the crowd had circled her in next to the bars. She sighed, but smiled over to Salem.

"Thank you," she said quietly. "I guess you have to perform again..."

She stood there, with a small smile, waiting for watch his tricks again. She wasn't sure if she should enjoy it or not, knowing that she definitely didn't like the idea of this zoo, but he seemed happy while performing. Outwardly at least.

A crowd had gathered. It seemed their conversation would be cut short. At least for now. He winked at her before skulking behind his Pride rock. He waitted for th cowd to get a bit bigger. Once he heard quite a rackte outside his cell he climbed onto the rock. He stalked to the top of the rock and squatted down, placing his left hand down in between to stabilize himself. He dropped his head and his right arm down lazily. After a few moments the crowd had settled down, ready for his show. His show wasnt the same everytime. He liked to change it up.

The crowd was silent. He slowly raised his head and arm. His first howl was extremely loud. and as he raised his head it got louder. by the time he was done the howl was shaking the fake rock beneath him. He ceased the howl and stared down into the crowd. He could see Kalie there, squished between the people, looking a bit uncomfortable. He got an idea. She had bee so sweet to him. He might as well help her out.

He smiled and dove off the rock, performing a layout flip before landing softly on the dirt. At once he pounced into the bars where Kalie stood and scratched them. Sparks flew and everyone near the bars jumped back in fear. Kalie did as well. But he had promised her he wouldnt hurt her so he hoped she knew she was safe enough to stand closer were the others were to afraid to stand.

He finished off his show succesfully. They all seemed pretty pleased, but he really couldnt care less if they liked it. He only went as far as he did with it most days because he was bored. The crowd dispersed, but there she was. Still standing with her book. He smiled and sat against the rock. She obviously wasnt done yet. He sat quietly, awaiting more questions from her.

She smiled as she jumped away from the sparks Salem's claws showered down from the bars. The crowd had loosened around her and she was grateful, stepping closer again and grinning at his performance. When he finished, she remained where she was, scribbling a few things down.

I should learn some acrobatics or something. Seems fun. I wonder how the other exhibits are. How does one get an animal mutation? Would it be worth it?

Curious now, she peered back up to Salem asking, "Do you wish you were never like this? Like...what if you were normal? Would that be better? Or is being the way you are advantageous somehow? What if...what if someone wanted to know...how to become one?"

Her rambling questions had switched subjects a bit, but she was deadly serious. It would be exciting, as long as she wasn't in this zoo she supposed. Then she regretted saying it. She would probably end up right here if she ever discovered how to become anything at all. The thought saddened her and she leaned against the bars with a sigh.

Salem raised an eyebrow. Ahh. So this was her game. He chuckled a little. It was such an innocent thought. but such a heavy one as well. He had often wondered what it would be like if he were "Normal." This grl wanted to be suprnatural. So does everyone. Everyone wants to be something different, something unique. He regretted that he didnt have an adequete answer for her.

He sighed. "Kalie. Yes, sometimes I do wish I'd never become...this" he gestured to his body. "and sometmes I do wish I was normal. I would love to have a normal life, Id love to have a job, to have my own house, and even to have a girlfriend." He romanticized the thought of a relationship sometimes. Unfortunately he couldnt see that happening in the near future.

"and of course its advantageous to have these abilities. The instinct is great when necessary, but it has no place in the human world. People love to see us perform, and play around behind a cage. They love to bring their kids and friends by to look at the freaks. but at least 80% of them would not allow us to live in the same town as them. They would fear us. People are afraid of what they dont understand, and they never quite take the time to understand." He realized he had gone off on a tangent. "But what I'm trying to tell you is that these mutations have no place in the real world. I belong here, We belong here."

This thought was very saddening, but he had come to terms with his fate. He would never leave this place. It was where he belonged, the only place where people werent scared to see him.

"But I'm sorry, I dont know how anyone would become one of us. I'm sure comic book fanatics would have figured that one out by now." he joked.

All he said made sense, and should have gone through her head before she had opened her mouth. But she still wondered how it would be...

Although he ended on a joke, he seemed a little distant now with his thoughts on depressing things. Without thinking, Kalie gripped the bars and leaned her head on the bars as if trying to get inside. It was strange speaking to someone so far away.

"What if you got out?" she mused. "What if you could leave here and control your abilities to a point where...you could function in a normal society? I mean...there can't just be you guys. If there's a whole zoo of people like you...there has to be more out there...in the real world. So...what if you could be one of them?"

"What do you think is the meaning of life?" Dawn looked up, a small frown set on her face. Meaning of life? "Honest answers are greatly appreciated." She tried to think of what to say. Nobody has bothered to ask her a question like that since... Well, since ever. She ran a hand through her hair before deciding the suitable answer that Jack always used. And, the one all of the older freaks used to describe themselves.

"To entertain. It doesn't matter if we want to, or don't want to, but we have to entertain." Her eyes never strayed from a spot on the ground, and she could hear Freya's voice fill her head with thoughts at what she had just said. She flapped her wings, enough to have her hover a bit over the ground but not enough to be out of sight. She looked down at her current audience member. Only audience member, at that. Where was everybody? She looked around, finding them crowded around Ridley's cage. And Jack... Wait, Jack? That must mean that she had done something wrong. And sure enough, there was soon a web covering the bars of her cage. Oh, no. She wouldn't be leaving without bruises.

"I don't mean to cut our conversation short, but the zoo is closing soon, Freya. I thought you might like to know." Still quiet. But this time, Dawn look up. Over Freya's head and to watch the sunset. It was beautiful, she watched it every time. She sighed and ran a hand through her hair again. Habit.
---
Jack looked at Jetta, saw the rib sticking out. Saw Widow shoot the web. He had had just about enough. He shot a look to everybody that was dangerously evil. He was losing his patience. And you didn't want him to lose his patience. He looked at Timothy one last time, nodded, before heading off to his office. It was still as clustered as ever, maybe even more messy because he had left a window open and the breeze had blown papers everywhere. As soon as he locked the door behind himself, the phone rang, but he didn't recognize the caller. Instead, he walked over to it and listened to the message.

"Hello, this is Jennifer Cross. I was just wandering if it would be possible to interview you when you arrive at Vancouver, possibly other staff member and maybe a few of your 'exhibits'. This would be a really interesting story and I would love to work on it. Thank you. Bye." Jack looked down at the answering machine as the girl (Jennifer Cross. Name sounded familiar) hung up and a series of beeps told him that. He looked around. The newspaper, that's where she was from. And she wanted a story on them. Which would populate them. And then cause him to earn more money.

"This is The Owner of Freaks Galore. We will be arriving at Vancouver in two days, you won't miss us. There will be flyers all over town. But, if you'd like to interview us, that would be wonderful. The freaks you should probably interview are our most populated ones, which are stated on the front of the map when you get here. If you'd like to know their names ahead of time, here they are; Angel, Black Widow, Jetta, Romulus, and Zero. Staff, I'll introduce you to when you arrive. We'll cease to entertain you." With that, he hung up. Somebody had answered, but that was all he had said. And that would be enough to catch their attention.
~
"Attention! The zoo is now closed. We will be here tomorrow also, so if you wish to come back, please do so. After that, we will be heading to Vancouver. Please clear out, or my guards will have to help you." Jack called out, the last part dead serious, but he smiled as if it were a joke. He ushered a lot of the onlookers that were talking to the freaks with his hands. Amoung them was a redhead, a girl in pigtails, a french guy, and some dude dressed like a girl. He nearly pushed them out, but did it with the same joking smile.

After all, he had to get to his freaks. They hadn't exactly done a good job today.

The familiar voice was heard over the bustle of the people. The owner. Salem didnt really like the owner very much, but he fle the had to obey him. He was housing him. Salem sadly looked to Kalie. He hadnt gotten to answer all of her questions yet. He walked to the cage. She was still lingering. "It was nice to meet you Kalie" he put his head against the bars, inches from hers. "If you want any other answers come by tomorrow and we can keep this conversation going."

He smiled and backed away from the bars. "You really should be off now, lest the bouncers come by and throw you out." He waved goodbye and headed back behind the rock where he could get some peace and quiet until boss man came round.

-----

Eventually the owner did come out and he was pissed. Salem groaned and moved to the bars. He took a seat and crossed his legs, waiting for the owner to bitch at them. And he delivered. Obviously the owner had not noticed Salem speaking to a girl for the past hour or so. That was good. He wouldnt have been happy with it.

One the owner took off everyone started to get less tense, but they still wanted out. Salem just paced around. The freaks were talking amongst themselves. He rolled his eyes and yamned. He was tired.

Kalie

Vancouver. Canada...how long would it take for mom to notice I'm gone? It's been all day and...no calls or texts...

Sitting in the front seat of her car, still outside the zoo, Kalie wondered what happened there at night. She was seriously considering following the zoo too, take the car, and her savings and figure out a way to help them. The situation could not be liked by any of them, even if Salem had said his situation was ideal to keep people safe. She had to believe they could lead normal lives and not have to be put on display.

If they could escape, it would be better. They would have a hard time I suppose, but it would be better than being in cages right? All day in and out...faces peering at you, performing...I wouldn't like it. I'm not one of them at all of course, but I wouldn't like it. How can they? They can't. And if they do...well...they can stay. I'm going to try and figure something out. Maybe I can find the owner or something and talk to him. Figure out what the exact situation is and fix it.

Rereading her written words, a chill ran over her. For some reason she felt like she shouldn't mess with this. But she had to. She vowed to share her thoughts with Salem the next day and see what he truly thought since she was cut off before. And maybe see if some of the others were interested.

For now, she had to pack. Quickly, she drove home and showered and packed her blue duffel to the brim. Then she set her alarm for six AM. Bright and early. She was leaving this place and following the zoo. It wasn't all going to happen in one day she was sure. She had to plan, stake out, get them to help her.

Shaking, she slept unsoundly, nightmares of police chases and rogue "freaks" mauling her down plaguing her dream space. But she forced herself back to sleep every time she woke up shaking in a cold sweat. She was determined. She needed rest. With only two hours left until her alarm was going to go off, she pounded her head back to the pillows.

Salem had dozed off. Everone as either being punished or on the way to bed, and he was a bit lonely in his cell. So he had secluded himself to a corner. He felt bad for those who were being punished. They were the ones who refused to be a sideshow. And he understood them. He didnt want to be a sideshow either, This is just how it turned out. You gotta play with the cards you're dealt.

He couldnt get Kale out of his mind. It was the first time in a few years that a human had worked up the nerve, or cared to talk to him. She seemed so thoughtful... so interested. He was puzzled. Salem hasnt had anyone who cared about his past in a while. He hoped he would come back. She was good company.

" Salem, you alright?"

Th question came from above. A birdcage. It held what the people came to know as "angel," But the zoo knew her as Dawn. She was a quiet girl, much unlke some one the others in the zoo. They hadn't spoken much in their time here. He always assumd he intimidated her o she didnt approve of his attitude toward confinement. Nevertheless, he was a kind girl.

He gave her a confused look. "Hmm? oh, yeah Dawn, I'm fine." he answered hesitantly. He was still mulling over Kalies words. "having trouble sleeping?" he askd with a smile.
