Introduction
In a near-Utopian world, however, they have managed to enhance it, use it to power their devices, taming it into absolute control. To them they had conquered the final power, and had achieved perfection. Or at least, that is what they believe, but there beyond the veil, are still those that exist in the Aethera, yet unwilling to be understood, or accept this new world, or seek to control it for stepping within their territory. For where one opens a gate of the unknown, it often lets in more than what was intended.

The Story So Far... Write a Post » as written by 4 authors
Within the park, Luci Sue sets up her stage in the usual flair: seemingly materializing it out of thin air, red curtains first leaving them afloat momentarily, then the stage itself, a quaint little wooden structure like those used by magicians of old. As her usual flair, an entrance that was not in some way dramatic would be a sin against her audience. Today, she would materialize her hands and bow first, disembodied white-gloved hands adjusting it as the rest of her body materialized outwards. The red-headed and freckled youth grinned showing her large front teeth, she took a bow to the audience. She was dressed in a black magician's suit clearly meant for a man somewhat larger than her.
"Greetings, one and all to Sue's Show of the Strange, where anything is possible," she says enthusiastically, waving her hands as dramatically as possible. "And remember, while the show is free I ask that you donate in the box as proceeds go towards the less fortunate." She motions to an empty spot in front of her stage, noticing this her eyes grow wide and snaps a finger causing a donation box to materialize. She unwrapped some gum chuckling nervously as some people laugh, believing it was part of the show.
"And remember, the unknown is nothing to fear, as it makes life interes-" she said, suddenly cut off by a ringing in her ears and a sudden pain within her skull. She gripped her head and became immediately nauseous.
"Such wasted potential in this one," a distorted voice boomed inside her head, inducing pain with each word. "Barely shining above the transient dust that surrounds it... and yet perhaps still of some utility."
The voice fades, the sensation passing, she looks out blankly among the crowd, shaking. The audience looked on with various expressions of confusion as her nose began to bleed. She wipes a finger across her nose and looks down at it, then chuckles nervously again. "W-well, no worries, I'm absolutely fine, little more than a case of... of aetheric recoil," she said, but her uncertainty was clear. "Such magic would be quite taxing for most, afterall." With this, she wiped her nose with a handkerchief and proceeded with the show as per normal routine.
Zane wasn't actually in a bad situation, and he could get money easily. He just always liked having extra money for food. Zane had an appetite that could starve small towns of food if he started eating there. As he was walking down a side street, however, he heard a cry for help. Zane ran towards it, half because he is a decent person, and half because he really loved to show off sometimes. Also, maybe whatever species he was really liked to fight. It was still unknown what species he even was, or half species, or whatever. It was the tail that threw people off.
As he turned the corner, he found some sort of wizard draining the life force of a random person. There was already one shriveled up body of a previous victim. "Well, guess its time for some fun".
The wizard noticed him, and his tail, and immediately launched a magical attack on Zane. Zane jumped above it, landed on his own two feet, and launcher his own attack. Zane sent a powerful electrical attack against him, only for him to block it with a barrier. However, this had been within his realm of expectations, as Zane had moved himself behind the barrier and the wizard, and used his tail's natural ability to shapeshift to create a large hammer which he then smashed into the wizard. Wizards often had strong magic defense, but little physical defense. While magic defense would help prevent physical damage, it was not as effective as actual physical defense. As a result, Zane's hammertail was highly effective, and the lightning was meant to A: Draw his protective magic to be focused in the barrier, and B: To create a bright source of light that would mask Zane's quick movements around him.
The person who he had been draining life from had taken the time to run away, which allowed Zane to make his ultimatum with no innocents around. "Listen dude, you hurt anyone again, or come after me, and I will end you, understood?"
As Zane turned around and started to walk away, the wizard jumped up and lunged at him with a hand of lightning. And then, a second later, both his hand and head, both severed, fell to the ground, followed by the rest of his dead body. Zane's tail had morphed into a blade and slashed at lightning speed. If he was human, he was definitely no normal one, especially with that tail. It moved and reacted faster then any human should.
Zane smiled a little. "Don't mistake mercy for an inability to kill. I just prefer not to is all".
That last part was what made him concerned he might have gone too far, considering their principle was a succubus. Her punishments....well, they were embarrassing, to say the least. Well, it couldn't be helped now. While it would only be a few hours in the real world, in the dream world days would have passed. So they were probably awake by now. And if they tried to get revenge, well....Zeke would just have to retaliate with something that would definitely be going too far instead of just might.
As he walked down the street, he saw the people going about normal business. Acting all normal. It almost made him want to cause a little chaos. He couldn't help it, he was drawn to darkness. Granted, pure blooded demons would probably not agree with his version of darkness. Zeke didn't like killing innocent people, or anything sentient if he could help it with some exceptions. He did love breaking rules, causing trouble, scaring people, but like his father, he cared about life. Probably why he had gone too far with those bullies. Granted, what he did was probably worse then what they did, but they were making that kid's life miserable for no good reason. Its not much of a justification by human standards, but for demon standards, it was massive. Even for a half demon, he was unusually kind hearted. He definitely was not what someone would call a good kid, but he definitely was not a bad one either.
As he turned a corner, someone grabbed his shoulder. It appeared to be some angry man. Zeke did notice he seemed a bit familiar. "Hey, who the hell do you think you are? You think just because of what you are you can go around torturing kids like my son? You have a lot to answer for..." Oh, that's why he seems familiar..." It was the father of one of the bullies. Zeke immediately took precautions.
Zeke seemed to disappear in front of the man, re-appearing a few yards ahead facing him. Zeke noticed the blade hidden in the coat he was carrying. Protection, or planning to kill? Probably the latter, he sounded like a racist. "First of all, I am only half demon you asshat. Secondly, it was your son's fault for bullying that kid. They weren't even in the same grade! And third, its rude to be racist. Its also a bit extreme to go around killing someone for a simple nightmare spell, especially when it was in defense of another!"
"Maybe, but you went too far with the nightmare! Especially with how you portrayed the principle! You need to be taught a lesson!". How I portrayed?! She is actually like that! Exactly what delusion do you people have of her? But granted, I did probably go too far with that.
"She actually is like that, but I guess you sort of have a point. Alright, I will give you some mercy" he told him with a sort of devilish smile. Suddenly, several swords stabbed him through each limb, before dissolving. He collapsed to the ground in pain, but the swords left no wounds. "Oh, and for the record, I sent you into the nightmare realm the moment you grabbed my shoulder. I was tempted to do worse, but given I did probably go to far, I will leave it at that and a warning. You come after me again, I won't hold back".
And with that, the nightmare dissipated, and Zeke walked away from the man with a smile. Well, don't feel guilty anymore...
Elsewhere Luci had to call her show off early, still disoriented from the voice. She was having a sudden difficulty in maintaining her human form, likely from distress, her hands reverting to claws. She had decided to head over to an abandoned lot by her house to try to sort through her thoughts, maybe the silence would prove beneficial. Beyond that, it offered some privacy in case she reverted. She collapses into the grass and breathes deep.
"I am fine and I am not going crazy," she mutters to herself, shifting around her pink eyes. "And I don't get sick so... I really heard some creepy guy..."
As he approached though, things started to get out of the hand when one of the Imps got five times larger, and started to look at Zane as his next meal. Something you should know about Imps: Snack Food like hotdogs and chips makes them temporarily larger and stronger. Zane took out a simple pole, and had a red glare in his eyes. "You...dare....harm my lunchcart?!?!" The owner looked at him with half hope, half fear.
Several of the imps charged right at him, only for them all to get hit by that small pole simultaneously. All five of them. The pole extended outward, branched out, and bent around. Suddenly, his tail shapeshifted into a large spike, and dug itself into the ground. Under each Imp, a spike emerged, shooting upward and getting a good portion of the imps. There was a bloodthirst in his eyes now though, Eldritch or Demonic in nature, definitely a sign he was getting even more hungry. And so, his tail shape shifted again, reaching over to the hot dog cart, grabbing four hot dogs, and eating all four of them one after another, before facing the large imp. "Alright asshole. Time to die". Clearly, the madness was still affecting him to a degree.
The large imp charged at him with ungodly speed, but Zane blocked his attack with one fist. He then swept the legs of the imp, and kicked it into the air. "Alright! Any last words? No? Then....Origin Blast!" He then hit the imp with enough direct energy to vaporize it. He then immediately faced the hot dog stand salesman. "So, can I have some more hot dogs? And can they all be free for helping you out?" he asked with a smile, while his tail stayed in blade form without Zane realizing it.
He was that hungry. However, he did sense like he was missing something....something nearby had happened that was strange. Its just that feeling was eclipsed by hunger.
She slips around, using her disappearing act to hide herself from sight, to not only tail him, no pun intended, but also to remain hidden until she fixes her... problem. She slips around while like this checking him over as closely as possible. Not that he'd be able to tell she's there... at least, she hoped not. She finds herself fixated on his tail for a moment, at first not sure if it is real.
"Ah, it moved," she says excitedly, promptly covering her mouth. Soon afterwards her own tail, springs forth knocking over a post box causing the hotdog salesman to jump. To him it was like ghosts were now haunting him now with the disembodied voice and objects flying. She almost uttered an apology, stopping herself by keeping her mouth covered, noticing more and more her human guise is dissipating. At least the stealth is remaining... for now.

The damp, lingering stench of upturned moss entangled itself in Paul's respirator - Something wasn't right.
Focusing his gaze on the surrounding treeline, Paul raised his pistol as his eyes met with a figure to the rear of his tent.
While somewhat shrouded by the natural darkness of the forest, it was evident this figure was unaccustomed to this habitat - or perhaps they were simply unaware of the fact they SHOULD be hiding.
A series of loud cracks erupted from Paul's pistol as he took aim and fired upon this trespasser; each round finding their mark.
With three shots, the figure dropped. Carefully moving forwards, pistol still raised, Paul looked upon his prey with disgust.
This wasn't corp, or military. Nor was it civilian. Peering stoically at the wounded figure, this dawned on Paul.
This creature was unlike anything Paul had seen before - a lanky humanoid with a deep purple hue to its scaly flesh, sickeningly thin limbs and large, claw-like hands. It's face resembled that of a longbear, only with seven eyes on either side of its face, and an extended snout which was more akin to a trunk than anything else. The fangs were the most alarming feature, sending a chill down Paul's spine as he gazed upon them. They were slick, keen, and tinged with a deep crimson.
This... thing... had been feeding.
It was fortunate that Paul spotted this one before it had spotted him. If its characteristics were anything to go by, this creature was forged with one purpose - to kill. Crouching beside it, Paul examined the heavy ballistic wounds he had inflicted as he sighed.
Leveling the pistol at the creature's head, Paul took one final shot as he planned his next move. This had changed everything.
Perhaps it was time to retreat to the Elisonian Outskirts.
The setting changes from Nocturne Woodlands to Elisonia Nexus
Still, he got a strange feeling something was nearby. He looked around, but saw nothing. A cloak spell? Or just hidden? He chuckled. "Or maybe I am just being paranoid".
He continued walking, now all full on food, and figured it was time for some fun. But what to do? He had no idea where Zeke was. Everyone else was either busy, out of town, afraid of him, or got eaten during the troll attack at school last week. He guessed he could see what was going on at the basketball courts, but if anyone was there he could play with was unknown. But he did really love basketball.
He shrugged, and continued walking through the crowds, as people gave him shocked looks about his tail. But he was used to those. "I swear, I know its strange, but I am 60 percent sure its not the strangest thing these people have seen".
"I know, right? For the most part you look normal enough compared to other things, a tail is a pretty petty thing to hang up over," she blurts out, no longer caring that she's supposed to be shadowing him. Some people stumble over her tail, looking bewildered, unable to see it. "People tend to lie to themselves to sustain a sense of... normality."
"Right now I could totally have that tail thing beat, and it'd be hilarious!"
"So, the Destonia Cavaliers win against the Elonis Hearts with a 12-8 score in Magi-Ball? Sounds about right" Zeke mentioned. "It looks like a lot is happening today. Anyways....ooooh, a new battlespear? THe Zendo V? Sounds epic. And these new Jitari Gauntlets look badass".
Zeke couldn't help himself sometimes. Besides, it helped distract him from his desire to cause chaos to everyone and everything around him. He was part demon, so he couldn't help it. Besides, the stuff really was extremely cool. As he kept walking though, he got a strange feeling. It was like someone just ripped a hole in the universe temporarily. It was only a passing feeling though, so he shrugged it off.
As he continued on his way though, he got this strange feeling something big was about to happen.
(So my computer sorta bugged out for awhile hence the delayed post)
"Well that is probably because they know what most of those things are. They don't know what I am. Hell, I don't know what I am" Zane mentioned. Oh great, now it looks like I am talking to myself... "And why are you still invisible anyways?"
What was strange was that Zane still could not shake off the idea that someone ELSE was following him as well.
The mage prepares to strike the man back but suddenly black things start to fly through the air around them. They look around in confusion, the air is actually... filled with them. They resemble butterflies made of shadows. A chill fills the air a lone female figure walks down the road surrounded by these... butterflies, her face obscured by long black hair, she is dressed in a ragged dress, once ornate, like for a wedding. She was tall, but she seemed still like a young adult at most. She is holding her head, swaying back and forth. Upon further inspection, her shadow cast is actually... massive. As she gets closer, she seems to be darkening in color herself, splotches appearing in her skin. She buckles over and falls to her hands and knees.
An officer approaches reluctantly. "Miss, are you... alright," he asks. He looks back to the gathered crowd then gets ready to radio this in. Before he could utter a word, the girl screams, shattering the windows near her, and suddenly sprouts an extra set of arms, one of which throws the man back slamming him into a crowd of people. Her eyes are revealed, burning bright yellow, looking wild. The butterflies vaporize and suddenly black hands begin spawning up from the spreading shadows. It becomes clear the girl is the source.
"Remember when I said I'm even less something people want to see?" Luci says as her cloaking fades away revealing her halfway into transformation, her eyes wide staring at the weird four-armed lady. "Well um... nevermind that... anymore... I don't think anyone will notice me... anymore..."
Before Zane could get a reply though, he started running. He turned a corner with (hopefully) Luci right behind him, when he ran into a group of people suffering from some sort of large emotional state. Normally, this would be okay, if it wasn't for the fact one of them had a golem. Golem's respond to how their owner's feel as well as think, but they process feelings differently then humans or humanoids. Between it's owner's high emotional state, and the affect this magic was having on the golem itself, caused it to be a little confused....and view the first few new people it sees as hostile. Mainly, Zane and Luci.
"Quickly, dodge!" he yelled as he got out of the way of the Golem's magical defense cannon. It then tried to smash Zane, but he blocked it with his tail, which had turned to steel. However, despite this, it still hurt a lot. Zane jumped back up, and launched a large magical lighting blast at it, but it was a really well built golem. Probably its owner extensively modded it with Arcana Crystals. What he was using it for, Zane had no clue though.
The Golem launched more attacks at Zane and Luci, and nearly got Zane. He quickly got on his two feet, and took position facing towards the Golem.
"All right, guess I have to go all out! Circle of Flame, Resolute Destruction!" he yelled as he drew a circle of fire in front of him and then clapped his hands together in front of him. He then made a motion to push outwards quickly, causing several beams of fire to launch out of the circle. The sheer power caused the golem to try and dodge the attack instead of enduring it, recognizing the danger. However, the streams of fire turned and tracked the Golem, maneuvering around obstacles. Now, if it had been more agile or smaller, maybe it might have had a chance to dodge the tracking firestreams, but being a golem, despite being able to dodge, it was still a slow and big enough target to get hit by every single firestream. Once they impacted, they exploded, doing massive damage.
The golem was highly damaged, but despite all that, it started to shamble back to its feet. At this point, Zane could tell this needed to be ended quickly. He channeled a ton of magic into his tail as it turned into a blade, and the magic sword he just summoned, and crossed them. "Ultimate Negation! Cross Soul Slash!"
Both blades hit the target with plenty of force and power, but no physical damage seemed to have been done. However, the Golem collapsed soon after. "It only works on an injured target. I kinda just reset the Golem, though it will need to recharge. Works on people too, though sometimes with an odd affect".
He looked back towards the street. "Now, lets get out of here, and you can tell me what that was exactly when we are safe".
She was briefly broken from her thoughts when Zane pulled off some odd powerful spells decimating the golem. She attempts to speak at first but it comes out as a mumbling mess due to how much gum she had stuffed her mouth with earlier. She spits it out and tries again. "Where did you learn those spells, and what do you mean odd effect?" She shakes her head, figuring that is the least of concerns at the moment and looks up. "First off, safe is above ground level."
With a series of nimble maneuvers, first running up the side of a house, bouncing off onto a street light, then flipping from the street light to a fire escape then climbing up and kicking down the ladder. She motions for him to come up and starts scaling up the building. "Secondly: Those are not actual shadows, more like psychological manifestations through subconscious manipulations of aethera, it is composed of some strong negative emotions that seem to be projecting on others," she says before realizing how overly complex it is to word it that way. "Um, it is really bad mojo that is harshing everyone's vibe."
"Finally, that is one of my sisters, and this is only stage one."
"Yeah, this tail? Its pretty much a universal tool" he mentioned to her, still sorta stupefied at the sister part. "So wait, she is your sister? Your....sister? But, how? You two look nothing alike, and you give off completely different magical signatures from what I can tell! Are you two just total opposites or something?"
"Also, maybe we should also get some distance as well as height from here?" he said, still not sure how to react to the whole sister's thing. "Oh, but as for the magic, I taught myself it. I have had a lot of practice".
Zeke looked out to see something happening far away. But all that could wait just a few minutes, because he had come across something interesting. A group of people, looking for Zane. They had been whispering in a dark alley, which is usually where Zeke found suspicious people to satisfy his demonic impulses. His demon form was a little hard to look at, so if he ever used it, a dark alley would be ideal to be in already.
The hunters had been something special, but he defeated them all. WHat kind of demon would he be if he couldn't defeat a few thugs, evne if they had high quality magic and weapons. "Now, tell me, why were you looking for Zane?"
"Oh, are you a friend of his?" another hunter asked, walking into the alley. This one was different though, he sent a shiver down Zeke's spine. Usually, Zeke did that to other people. In fact, his dark aura was intense, almost as intense as whatever creature was terroring the people a few blocks away. There was no way he could let this guy regroup with the others at full strength, he had to knock him down now. "Well then, maybe we can lure him in by killing you! He is one of a kind after all, and that makes him a rare species that will be hunted by the greatest hunter!"
Supernatural Creature HUnters. He figured thats what they were. Zeke let loose his dragon wings, to bring some terror into the man he faced. He also turned his eyes red. "Trust me, you should run away now".
"Oh, so your a dragon huh? Maybe I will hang your head in my living room!" he shouted, as he released a large amount of scarabs. This was old Egyptian magic, this hunter was powerful. However, as this fight started, Zeke sensed something coming. He immediately flew up above the street, and the man jumped via magic onto the rooftops as shadows started to swarm the streets and the alleys. He saw two others nearby, but they were far away, and right now, he had this asshole to deal with.
(I wasn't sure what to type, so I figured I would at least establish him in the same area)
It soon became clear as she grabbed hold of Zane by the waist and made a series of mighty leaps up to the top of an apartment building overlooking the streets below. Not winded in the least she looks down at the woman below, hands and knees looking pathetic in a pool of shadows. "Heh, maybe sis fell back asleep, she's harmless when she's asleep," she whispers to Zane. then the woman suddenly looks up at them, eyes piercing yellow within blackness, above those another set of eyes open up. Luci felt something grip her in her chest, and her stomach knotted up. "She's awake... she's very very awake."
With that a surge of the darkest aether is felt for miles. Various equipment malfunction as sensations of being alone and terrified... of losing everything... sensations the deepest despair. All of this flooded from the woman like a broken dam. The look in her eyes changed from fury to clarity, tilting her head some and looking at her hand, the shadows adhering to it like glue. As she averted her eyes, clarity turned to fear. The shadows, like a black liquid the darkness crawled up over her, up her arms and legs, down her spine, all in the form of hand, a long bone tail shoots out from the base of her spine, and the shadowy arms spiral and twist together giving it "meat" with a sickening squish. Her hair growing out long and wild, her body... overall growing tremendously, her ears grow out long and pointed, facial features elongate and twist, her hands, all four of them, grow out long nails and arms grow out lanky. Her once fair skin now blotched in patched of darkness. She raised onto her knees and held her head like she were in pain letting out a shriek, at first sounding human but soon it too turned up twisted as well, the ground below her cracking and quaking. It had sunk in at this point when she stood up, propping herself onto the top of a convenience store with one set of arms, crushing down a car with the other, and busting out the side of a clothing shop with her tail that... she's really... really... huge. Her long stringy hair flows violently as if in a turbulent breeze as the shadows spread out more violently than before, street lights and people begin sinking down into the blackness.
"You're right... we should get far... far away," she says in a strained voice, her legs feeling weak.

South of the main city is the great old forest, allowed to flourish as a preservation. It is filled with the untamed Aethera. Nature rules here, both beautiful and terrifying.

Re: Gate Aethera
But, I have let races be somewhat open since it is a purely made up world and such full of different colors of races and species, but as I said, I would provide some of my own races if asked:
Humans need little explanation, they are pretty mid-ground, they are neither weak nor overly strong, they have equal opportunities in various magical fields.
Lylang: A race characterized by their long necks and long torsos, as well as a humanoid face. When obscured in clothing they appear almost human, except extraordinarily tall, underneath a sphinx-like felinoid with claws for climbing and long strong prehensile tails. They are very intelligent, often meditative and calm, specialize in being very nimble and flexible, decent eyesight, climbers, highly adaptive, and specialize in healing, empathy based psychics, and nature elements of wind, water, and earth. Larger versions exist that hail from the tundra, they tend to have a parka theme to their natural coats with a snow themed coloration, still humanoid faced. Have often retracted pupils that only enlarge in the dark.
Gar'agh: Proud beastmen that hail from the harsh desert regions. They have a mixed lion/tiger theme with short hyena-like tails. They are often a muscular build, even with females, kept in shape through tough living that has persisted within their culture. There is a variation called a Crying Gar'agh that has a more bestial appearance, are a bit taller, and have a cheetah theme including the cheetah "tear drops" that earns their title. Despite their more bestial appearance and size, they are less aggressive living more as farmers than warriors. Both are avid combatants, excelling at the fire element but sometimes earth as well. Have vertically slit pupils.
Mu'ud: Somewhat humanoid and visually diverse beings that are short in stature, often with large arms, pointed ears of various lengths and shapes, and variety of facial traits ranging from humanoid to more bestial. Despite their stature they are physically stronger than a human, and despite being unable to use magic they are very resilient to the effects of Aethera, making magical attacks less effective. They live brief lives (25-30), however, being cut off from the aether unless they feed on concentrated quantities. Pupils can be weird or normal.
---GIANT RACES---
These are the races with a large lifespan, massive mana pools, highly tied to nature, but low birth rates leave them as the least populated race. They are broken into three categories: Ziz (fliers), Behemoth (ground based), and Leviathan (amphibious). Through their life they only master a single element, but that one element they harness to its fullest potential. They are, despite their bestial and primal appearances and great size, often highly intelligent if not often too somewhat socially inept and don't often express themselves well regarding emotions. They can possess some humanoid traits but always diverge greatly from other races from size and other signs. Their pupils are horizontally oriented.
Ziz: One of the the three "giant" kin, they are the flying dragons, the great birdlike beasts, the wyvern, and things of that nature.
Behemoth: Earth dragons, great land beasts, and sometimes too look almost human except with bestial jags in the upper lips and possessing tails. Young humanoid behemoths with proper clothes, contacts, and makeup can in fact look almost human.
Leviathan: Water based giants, serpents of various sizes, they tend to have a slick and soft amphibious texture or an armored scaly texture. They can even have a slime/elemental texture as well and be avid shapeshifters as opposed to the other two giant races, as like water, some can shape themselves at will.
