One thing that Lexi has always been, and prides herself in being, is strong. She's independent and has always preferred to take the path less traveled rather than following the crowd. She thinks on her own, makes decisions based off of what suits her best, and has never truly struggled with feeling pressured into doing anything because she's just not the type to take anyone else's word into consideration that heavily. Her mother always told her, as a child, that it was important to learn how to think on her own, because at the end of the day, the only person you have is yourself. You have to know how to trust your mind and know who you are and what you need. She follows this motto, but to an extent where she not only thinks for herself, but puts herself above others too. Even her friends will tell you that Lexi has strong tendencies of being selfish. She struggles with the concept of compromising or being a team-player. She likes things that she can control, and if things don't go her way, she would prefer no involvement at all rather than relinquishing control to someone else.
She's unapologetic in who she is, because she learned that that's how she has to be. Growing up half-black and half-white gave her identity issues, of sorts. People would call her black before they would call her white, but she was "too white" in a lot of ways to be considered similar to her fully black friends, and even though she was half-white, considering herself to be white was laughable when trying to interact and relate with her white peers. For a while, she was stuck in a strange place trying to understand who she was, because as much as everyone wants to claim that racism is dead (especially in the northern states, and more specifically, in a "melting pot" city like New York), it isn't, and wasn't while she was growing up. She never faced anything as serious as a hate crime, but to a seven-year-old girl who just wanted to fit in, being asked why your lips were big, or why you didn't look like your mother felt like the end of the world. The amount of times that she has been asked if she's adopted is higher than one would guess, and though Alexis has grown to love herself for exactly who she is, it wasn't an easy road. It was one that came with self-hatred early on, confusion, and feelings of alienation from her mother and many of her peers. While it's an experience that she wouldn't wish on anyone, it's one that forced her to grow into a girl with thick-skin. She doesn't take people's opinions of her too heavily, and though she has more emotions than she shows, she has forced herself to keep those hidden away until she's alone.
Just because she doesn't let stereotypes or judgement get to her doesn't mean that they still don't exist. Being a female of color at a school that's predominantly white comes with a multitude of challenges, and having a curvier figure only added to that. Lexi grew up in this environment, so she's used to it by now, but even if she has known most of these girls since they were children, it doesn't mean that the comfort level eliminates their differences. Alexis is well-aware of how much harder it was for her to become popular. She had money just like the other girls. She had the nice clothes, and the money for cool vacations, and the unnecessarily high number of followers on social media. She had everything that usually made it automatically easy for girls to become accepted into the "in" crowd, but unlike them, Alexis had to work for her spot. She had to prove to all of these girls that she deserved to be recognized. That she was not beneath them, and that in fact, she was above them. Your average Queen Bee could be awarded the title of being a leader, and being able to garner and maintain a following, but Alexis is not your average Queen Bee. She doesn't fit the mold of being tiny, with sun-kissed white skin, golden blonde hair and bright blue eyes. She's not the Barbie doll that everyone expects to be running a posh school like Constance Billard, and for that, she truly deserves the leader character trait. She knows how to get what she wants, without asking, but demanding it.
Obtaining power wasn't easy, and maintaining it isn't either. Alexis developed thick-skin at a young age out of necessity, but she also developed a sense of ruthlessness. She wasn't a mean girl in the conventional sense, where she enjoyed spreading rumors about people for the fun of it, or to exact revenge for petty purposes. It began out of wit, really. If a child had something rude to say about why she had started developing physically earlier than all of her peers, or why her skin was so much darker than her mother's, she would snap back with an insulting remark that possessed enough wit to not be plain mean, but still stung. She developed a defense mechanism, of sorts, where she learned to protect her feelings and emotions at all costs, regardless of whose she harmed in the process. She learned that most people will hurt her rather than love her, and that's why she prefers a very intimate group of friends over many. It takes a long time for her to warm up to people, and when she does, she truly trusts them and gives them her everything. She's a loyal friend, and that's why betrayal hurts her more than anything. Once she feels like she has been betrayed, it's like that instinctive survival mode of needing to hurt that person more than they hurt her kicks in, and a nasty vengeful side that she secretly dislikes, will force its way to the surface.
History:
Alexis took her mother's last name on her birth certificate because shortly after Julia Parker found out that she was pregnant with her boyfriend's child, he left. It's something that her mother doesn't like talking about, and something that Alexis spent years confused over. Though she never met her biological father, Alexis was privileged enough to grow up in a household where her mother had support, both emotionally and financially. Though Julia was doing well for herself at the time of Alexis' birth, working as a higher-up for American Express, she ended the lease on her posh apartment in favor of moving back in with her parents, who still owned the brownstone townhouse she grew up in in the Upper East Side. Her parents helped raise Alexis once she went back to work, and the love that her mother and grandparents showed her made up for the lack of paternal love she received.
She didn't have to go very long without it, however, because by the time she was five, her mother's serious relationship with the CEO and chairman of American Express had gotten serious, and she soon married the man, Kenneth Leon. Alexis was in grade school then, and only then was she truly beginning to understand that kids saw her differently because of her skin tone. She learned that stereotypes existed, and that one of them was that black men were bad fathers, and it irked her because she knew that it was mean; that it was something people said in an insulting manner, and yet it fit her life story. She hadn't quite reached that stage where she was okay with telling kids to fuck off (in a more kid friendly way) for teasing her, so it was after she realized this that she insisted on taking her stepfather's last name, and since then, she's always treated him like a real father and introduced him as her father. It doesn't make much of a difference considering that he is a father to her, and is a good one at that, but it's something that she only recently started to feel weird about. She knows that she was right to embrace Kenneth as her father, since he was a good man to take her in as his daughter, but she feels like she's denying part of her true self by feeling ashamed at the fact that her biological father isn't in the picture. She knows that it isn't as big of a deal as she makes it out to be in her head, but it's still one of those things she thinks about without fail every night when she can't fall asleep.
Although her family has always been well-off, Alexis isn't the child of billionaires. She has enough money to fit in with her peers in the Upper East Side, and keep up, if not set trends for spending, but she also isn't in a place where she can drop fifty grand on a vacation like some of her friends can. It isn't something that's extremely noticeable because it's usually her who's setting the standards for these things, but it's worth noting that her family's wealth is worked for, and she understands that she has to work and make a name for herself if she wants to pass on this lifestyle to her children.
