Aster Rei Elionzvie

"Why am I alive... Why did I alone survive when thousands died all around me? Why was my life somehow worth more than the lives of those I loved?! Those lives are not something that can just be replaced, damnit...!"

a character in “Hellward”, as played by Tsukiakari

Description

{Pilot}
Name: Aster Rei Elionzvie
Callsign: Golden Phoenix, derived from her nickname/title, the Golden Phoenix of Elion.
Age: 19, almost 20.
Birthsign: Aries
Appearance: Image
Aster stands approximately five foot eight, a fairly average height. With a fairly developed, albeit rather slender build, and somewhat tanned skin, Aster has a clearly military air about her, evident in her rigid posture, disciplined manner, and rather serious countenance, her pale lips rarely graced with a smile, her gleaming white teeth almost constantly hidden behind pursed lips and a frown. Her azure eyes have a piercing, determined gaze, matched only by the determination that echoes through every timbre of her voice, the willpower that is evident with her every stride. The feature that makes Aster stand out the most, however, is not her determined gaze, nor her military precision and discipline. No, those are fairly commonplace in the Hellward division, as is the green uniform jacket and pants she wears, as are her well polished black leather boots. Aster's most distinctive feature is her short-cropped, spiky red hair, which easily points her out among a crowd of countless other soldiers like herself.
Behavior: Aster, as mentioned above, acts very serious nigh constantly, having been rigidly drilled into a military mentality since her youth. The only times at which she is not perfectly composed, disciplined and stoic are on the battlefield and when embarrassed - and you'd have to go to great, great lengths to humiliate her enough to lose her composure. On the battlefield, however, she shows an uncontrollable fury against the enemy - an understandable fury, to be sure. There are very few people who don't know the tragic story of the Elion colonization disaster, and of the Golden Phoenix who emerged from that debacle as a powerful warrior.
History: Aster Rei Elionzvie was an unknown to most of Humanity until a rather recent date. How she joined the Hellward Division as one of its newest pilots, and how she learned the skills that got her in that position, however, are now a very well known tale.

In the year A.D. 3995, Humanity sent a colony ship to a mineral rich desert world known as Elion. Its objective was simple: establish a profitable mining settlement on that world. The plan was for regular supply ships to be sent with food and water, which would serve to keep the colonists alive during the initial stages of development. Once a settlement was established, terraforming would begin, and once the miners could become self-sufficient, Elion would rise and stand on its own two feet. Little was known about the planet, so a squadron of four Hellward operatives were sent with their machines - mass production units known as Golden Knights - to protect the colonists.

The Golden Knight used by Aster during the Elion massacre, now known as the Venganza: Image

Needless to say, things did not go as planned. During atmospheric entry, a breed of Exomachina capable of absorbing, liquifying, and controlling metal (pictured below) - the perfect warrior on such a mineral-rich planet - appeared and attacked the colony ship, sending it plummeting to the surface below.

Image

The Hellward operatives did not survive the crash, and many of the colonists died with them. Those who were not killed, however, were given the keys to the Golden Knights by a dying Hellward operative, and given brief instructions on their use. Four of the lucky few who escaped the crash without injury, consisting of two brothers, the elder named Alric and the younger named Rayne, and Aster and her twin sister Rose, were given control of the four Knights. They fought desperately to cover the escape of the colonists into the dunes, retreating a little father each day to protect the fleeing colonists. Alric - a charismatic, energetic young man - took command of the squadron, claiming a customized red unit for himself.

The others reluctantly followed his leadership, as he was the oldest of them, and thus seemed justifiably to be the wisest. The Exomachina paid dearly for every inch of ground they took, shot down in the dozens as the descended upon their prey. For a while, the fates of the colonists and the four golden warriors seemed hopeful. The Exomachina had them on the run, but they had already eliminated countless foes. The grew more experienced and more confident with each passing day, and, although they each had a few close calls with death, they believed that they could still survive. However, each battle also took a toll on their machines, on their supply of ammunition, and on themselves. They had little time to rest, and were growing more feeble by the day. Their machines were battered, cracked and scarred, and some were on their last legs. Those that weren't were fast running out of fuel, and their weapons could hardly have been said to be loaded.

And then, tragedy struck. Rayne, running out of ammo, drew his machine's sword, and attempted to cut down an enemy. However, to the entire squadron's shock and horror, his sword simply dissolved into the enemy's body, and it grew larger, dragging him in slowly and consuming his crippled, helpless machine. Rose had fallen in love with Rayne during their time together, and, panicking, leaped into the fray, desperately attempting to blast the monstrous golden beast off of the one she loved. Her efforts, while valiant, came at a great price, for although she saved the cockpit of Rayne's machine - hurling it to safety in the hands of Alric's Neurosuit - her Knight was crippled, its legs ripped off by an enemy attack, and she was quickly overcome by countless enemies. Giving a final farewell to her comrades, Rose did the last thing she could: she self-destructed, destroying both herself and her killers in a colossal fireball.

Image

The remaining pilots were devastated by the loss of Rose, whom all of them cared for. Rayne, having suffered many injuries during his brush with death, died from internal bleeding and grief soon after, leaving only Alric and Aster, each crushed by the loss of their siblings. The colonists were dying of starvation, drought, heat stroke and disease, and those who were not killed naturally died at the hands of the overwhelming Exomachina. Soon, there were almost no survivors left. These few survivors knew their fates were sealed. There was nowhere near enough food or water for them all, and they were too exhausted to continue running. They gave in to despair, and handed over all of their food and water to Alric and Aster. Signing their own death warrants, they rushed into the desert, ordering their last two protectors to flee, so that they might live long enough to see the supply ship - and, by extension - their rescue arrive. These survivors died almost immediately, annihilated by their monstrous otherworldly pursuers.

Alric and Aster fought on the run for months, barely surviving. Trading out their melee weapons for large pointed stones, they used these makeshift spears, weapons which could not be absorbed by the Exomachina they fought, to hold off their enemies with the fury of those with nothing between them and death. They were hunted by a seemingly endless number of foes, they had few weapons left with which to defend themselves, and they were slowly running out of supplies. Their machines would run out of fuel - having only lasted so long thanks to a recharge mechanism which was now finally succumbing to damage sustained in battle, which, through careful use, had allowed one to rest while the other guarded their encampment - any day now, and then they would die. They despaired of being rescued, and, having grown close over their time as comrades, decided to admit their feelings to one another as a final act to bring peace to their minds and momentary joy to their hearts. Surrounded by the enemy, they powered up their Knights for one last battle, the last Golden Knight fighting side by side with its crimson counterpart on the edge of a deep precipice, their backs to the seemingly bottomless pit below. As their final battle raged around them, they swore final vows to each other, promising to protect each other to the last. They accepted their deaths, and it seemed like it would all end with them together, fighting their nameless, horrifying enemies until the bitter end.

Little did they know that rescue had already arrived. Called to the desolate world by distress beacons triggered during the crash of the colonization vessel and the destruction of Rose's Knight, the Hellward division was already tracking them down to rescue the final survivors of the Elion massacre. They descended from the sky like angels on judgement day. But they were too late to save both of the warriors below, for just then, Aster's Knight ran out of power, and collapsed, leaving only Alric standing between her and death. Alric's spear soon broke upon the oncoming mass of enemies, and his Neurosuit's leg was torn from its socket. The Golden Knights were older models of Neurosuit, and did not have dampers on the pain their pilots felt. Alric, overcome by waves of horrific agony, collapsed, and began to be consumed by the Exomachina. However, in his dying moments, he saw the transport descending, and so he turned, crawled beneath the weight of countless enemies piled on top of him, picked up Aster's crippled machine, and hurled her to the transport, where she was caught by a Hellward machine waiting to save her.

And then, she watched from inside her broken machine as Alric, defiant to the last, triggered his Knight's self destruct mechanism, and hurled himself into the pit below, dragging countless enemies down with him. The last Aster saw of her once-comrade, once-lover, was a fiery blast of light before his wrecked machine fell down, down, down into the darkness far below, his tearful voice echoing out over the communications channel right up until the end, delivering his last words to the group on the transport above. They have been recorded as follows.

"Aster... I'm afraid that this is the end of the line for me, love. I can barely move... I can barely breath. They're crushing me. B-but you... You can still make it. I promised to p-protect you t-to the end, d-didn't I? And that's... exactly... what I'm going to do! Go, Aster! You have to... you have to live! For everyone that died, you alone have got to live. So don't you dare cry for me, Aster. That's right... I'm just... fulfilling the promise... I made you."

"Heh. Guess I was an idiot right up to the very end... Later... love."

Image

After the tragedy was over, Aster was the sole survivor of the thousands who had been sent to colonize Elion. The entire debacle was covered up until the truth finally came to light in A.D. 4004, when the Exomachina became a public threat as opposed to a hidden one. Aster, meanwhile, had spent this time training under the Hellward division. She jumped at the chance to join the division, and, with her Golden Knight rebuilt, repainted, and upgraded - now christened the Venganza, meaning vengeance, something which she intended to wreck upon the Exomachina - she became a full fledged member of the squadron. A tragic hero in the eyes of the public and a figurehead for the tragedies caused by the Exomachina, not to mention an incredibly skillful warrior for the Hellward division, she has become one of the most well known faces of the war, and of how great its price can be...

{Neurosuit}
Name: Venganza
Appearance: The Venganza is a densely built Neurosuit, almost Knight-like in appearance. Repainted bright crimson on bronze and gold to honor her fallen comrade, Alric, this winged red knight strikes a dynamic image on the battlefield, its gleaming red targeting sensors in its bar visor burning like the fires of a damnation waiting to inflict itself upon the Exomachina. With a symbol of a golden phoenix emblazoned on both its shield and chest, the Venganza symbolizes the death of Aster's childish innocence and naivete, and the birth of a vengeful warrior from the ashes of those innocent days...

The Venganza: Image
Image
Weaponry: The Venganza commonly carries with it four weapons: the first is its rifle, seen in both of the pictures above. This rifle works on a similar principle as a railgun, propelling large shells at high velocities. The difference between the Venganza's rifle and a normal railgun is that the shell is surrounded by bursts of ionized plasma, melting through energy fields and metal alike, making it capable of utterly decimating a target in just a few shots. This rifle is suitable for both close combat and sniping from a range, although Aster prefers the latter.

The second weapon is the Venganza's shield and lance package, also shown above. This shield contains on its underside a powerful energy field generator, making it highly resistant to both physical and energy attacks. However, this is not the only purpose served by this generator, for it can also be used to concentrate energy in a powerful set of beams from the end of the lance, allowing it to be used as a melee weapon as well as a shield. In addition, the end of the lance can be split open, revealing a powerful cannon also fueled by this energy field generator, allowing the Venganza to fire a devastating energy barrage into a target. The back end of the shield also has a rocket booster attached to it, which can be activated to increase the strength of a swing or lunge greatly.

The third weapon is a simple broadsword, as pictured in the Golden Knight image in the history section - although much less battered. This sword contains oscillating particle fields of energy, allowing it to slash through energy fields with ease, as well as protecting it from metal-assimilating Exomachina such as the ones on Elion.

The final weapon is the pair of cylinders mounted on the Venganza's back. These cylinders contain energy in a stable state, as well as the means to disrupt this energy, causing a violent expansion through a concentrating lens and out of the end of the tube. They also possess joints, allowing them to be swung up between the Venganza's wings and over its shoulders, allowing them to fire an overloaded barrage of energy once. They can then be detached, as they are useless after one shot.
Unique Gear: The Venganza's unique gear consists of its lance and S.M.W.Cs (Shoulder-Mounted Wave Cannons), as well as its wings and a few other systems. These wings release powerful fields of energy from the Venganza's high-end reactor systems, allowing it both atmospheric and space flight capabilities. It is also airtight, so Aster won't die if she pilots in space.

Other such unique systems include its rather outdated - albeit refitted - synchronization systems. Aster refused offers to upgrade the piloting systems to less painful ones, under the guilty feeling that all of the other pilots on Elion had suffered that same pain, and she should be no exception. These systems have, however, been upgraded to match those used in other Neurosuits at the present day.

Its final unique system is its shielding. A simultaneous particle and energy field surrounds the Neurosuit, meant to dampen the effects of enemy attacks upon the Venganza. They are quite potent, ensuring that small arms fire does not get through, and that more powerful attacks are rendered non-fatal by the field they have to go through to reach their target.

More may come with time and upgrades to the suit.

So begins...

"Commander."

That one word rang out, spoken in a stern, disciplined voice, just as the door to the briefing room slid open, revealing a tall figure clad in green striking a well practiced salute, her white-gloved hand almost reaching the bright red hair adorning her pate as she raised it like she had done a thousand times before. Aster stood at attention, her azure eyes scanning the briefing room. It seemed she was the first one here.

"Aster Rei Elionzvie, reporting for duty, sir. I have completed reorientation and reported immediately here, to the briefing room, as ordered," She said, standing rigid in the doorway, awaiting the commander's order to cease formality and enter the room, the discipline that had been hammered into her for years embodying her every motion, her every breath. She was a soldier, through and through, and it showed. However, despite all of that formality, the eager smile on her face showed just how much she looked forward to destroying their monstrous enemies. Already, her eyes had turned to the dark void in space outside the window.

Meanwhile, on the other side of that void, a lone asteroid drifted through space. At its heart rested an amorphous pool of golden metal, the heat generated by this molten substance steadily melting its way through the rock around it, even in the cold nothingness of space. Countless armored shapes, no two alike, looked on with no small fear as a single, titanic shape rose from this hellish abyss, dwarfing each and every one of its compatriots.

"Are we in position?" The question was not spoken, but all of the killer machines there understood it nonetheless. The response was made, and the golden giant was pleased.

"Good. Prepare for battle. You will ram this asteroid through the Emergence Field and use it as a shield to get us close to the Humans. Meanwhile, I will make my own move under cover of your appearance. Do you all understand?" Again the response was made to this unspoken command, and again the golden giant was pleased. As the asteroid rushed onward through deep space, the Emergence Field ahead opened like a colossal maw before it. They would arrive at their destination soon, and then, Magister Letum mused, its plan could begin. The Exomachina who he sent to their assured deaths at the hands of the assembled Human fleet mattered not. As long as it could get two of its drones where they needed to be, the loss of allied "life" was inconsequential.

Aster nodded, dropping the salute and entering the room, listening calmly to the briefing. So, the Exomachina were attacking two planets at once? That seemed a bit unusual. Aster hadn't recalled them frequently using strategy - unless you could call a mindless, headlong charge at one target a strategy.

"Roger, sir," Aster replied, saluting yet again as she stepped aside from the door, clearing the way for Asher to leave first - the subordinate was never to walk ahead of her commander, after all. Once Graves left the room, Aster would follow directly on his heels, headed for the suit bay which had become quite familiar to her by now. The Venganza would be ready to go by the time she got there, meaning she could launch as soon as the command was given. To be honest, she couldn't wait to begin fighting. Killing the enemy, protecting Humanity, and avenging her comrades was the part of her job she most enjoyed - although since that was essentially her entire job, it might have just been better to say she took great satisfaction in her line of work.

She was prepared, no, eager to do battle. Nothing would stand in her way.

Aster followed her commander closely, entering the suit bay on his heels. She recalled the first time she had entered that grand chamber, in awe of its size and contents. Now, however, the sight of the hundreds of assembled giants was a normal one. Without batting an eyelash, the red haired pilot strode up to the crimson titan that was Venganza. No EXCAP pilot greeted her - she had all the reserve mags and weaponry on her that she planned to carry. Standing beneath the blood-red giant, she looked up as a small hatch opened in its sanguine surface above her. Slowly, she felt the ties binding her to the ground fading, and she hovered upward at a brisk pace, until the dark metal closed around her and she entered the machine proper.

She emerged in a small chamber, lit by a single red bulb in its center, which shone down on a chair in which lay a thin, dark red bodysuit, trimmed with lighter red and bright golden hues to match the machine around it's own color scheme. It was roughly circular, about five paces in diameter. Pipes and wires ran along the walls, carrying power throughout the neurosuit.

Aster stepped out of the lift, and it sealed behind her. Sliding out of her uniform, she piled it up in a small bundle in the corner. While it was rather awkward having to change before every mission, it was the price she paid to atone for her comrades' sacrifices.

Taking up the old fashioned pilot's suit, she slipped into it with a practiced ease. It fit snugly to her form like a second skin - albeit a skin with the sides, arms, lower legs, and most of the back removed for the convenience of interfacing with her neurosuit. The result looked like some cross between a backless dress and a Chinese Qipao, and could barely have been called modest. However, it did come equipped with an airtight particle field generator which would keep her alive in the cold vacuum of space for at least two hours, and would also protect her body should the Venganza cave in or explode around her.

Once she had changed into her pilot's interfacing suit, she seated herself in the chair, which, to first examination, appeared to be a metal version of a household recliner, with red padding along the insides and tops of the armrests, the back, and on the extended footpad. However, this chair was anything but comfortable. As she seated herself, she gritted her teeth and closed her eyes, waiting for the familiar sensation she knew was coming.

At once, metal cuffs slid out of the armrests and the foot pad, wrapping around her exposed wrists and ankles. Tiny metal pins slid out of the cushions and the insides of the cuffs, jabbing at her skin everywhere. Then, the sensation that she most dreaded - the feeling of energy being rushed through her body, as though she had been struck by lightning. Every inch of her was on fire, agony coursing through her body as her nerves screamed in protest. In that instant, it seemed as though time froze. Every second was like a thousand years of torment, every moment like an eternity in the fires of hell. She let out a stifled scream of agony, one heard by everyone on the communications channel. It was one they were used to by now. The old-fashioned synchro systems of the red giant were much more painful than the milder, modern equipment now used.

Aster groaned. As quickly as it had begun, the pain was over. She opened her eyes, and found herself looking out from within the visor of the Venganza, her titanic metal body encasing the organic one she had left behind with such difficulty a moment ago. Quickly, she tested her arms and legs. All in working order. She blinked twice, and an system stability and ammunition readout appeared on her HUD. Everything checked out. She was ready to go.

"Argh..." Aster groaned, massaging her aching head - a movement that carried over to her Neurosuit as it stepped forward, spreading its red-gold wings and launching itself upward, through the pass-barrier, spreading its wings like some sort of burning angel of destruction and hovering over the ship below, its golden eyes glowing out from within its visor menacingly, like two of the stars surrounding it gazing out from a black hole.

"This is Gold Phoenix, online and reporting!"

"An asteroid?!" Aster exclaimed incredulously. "Impossible!" A single gold eye shifted back as the Venganza flapped its wings and shot clear of the incoming projectile, glancing down at the scattering fleet below as shards of the gigantic asteroid crashed into the medium-sized ships, ripping through their defensive particle fields like a hot knife through butter. To her surprise and horror, something familiar was coming out of those shards. She gasped in terror and rage as gold liquid scattered from within the hollow shards, beginning to engulf some of the larger cruisers and their fighter compliments alike! Screams were heard over the communications channel as many ships were consumed, and then went silent. The golden titans were beginning to take form, each bloated by the ships it had devoured. They wouldn't even have to move to strike at their prey... They were right in the middle of a veritable feasting ground!

"Commander... That gold metal... It's the Exomachina from Elion! It's here!" Aster called, pent up anger filling her voice as she spoke that hated word - Elion.

Meanwhile, the main front was looking similarly bleak. As the fleet began to be devoured by the glistening metal spreading through its ranks like spider webs being sewn through the void of space, countless dark forms emerged from the asteroid's core - an army of Exomachina. They were pouring down in droves, surrounding the two Neurosuits that had already launched and raining hails of projectile attacks upon them. Aster raised her shield, turning aside a shower of blows before returning fire with her own rifle, ripping apart three of the grunts attacking her head on. Just then, warning lights flashed across her HUD, signaling her that an enemy was approaching from the rear. With a flap of the Venganza's powerful wings, she shout out of the way just in time, spinning in mid-flight to bring about her bladed shield, slashing apart her assailant at the waist. To her astonishment, however, a golden fluid exploded out of these wounds - Magister Letum! Using the energy field around her shield, she only barely managed to repel the ensnaring tendrils climbing up her arm. Three small copies of the hated Exomachina were closing in on her from all sides. She launched herself backward, the Venganza coming only a few meters away from being struck as they collided and formed into one shape. Quickly, she raised her rifle and blasted the enemy she loathed through the head, scattering it like dust in a hurricane. It rained down in a shower of golden droplets, and was quickly absorbed by the single, titanic shape growing out of the portions of the fleet that had not been lucky enough to escape. While Magister Letum had not been able to eliminate the command ship or very many of the heavy cruisers, its initial assault had been by no means insignificant in those lives it claimed. It only had to stall a little longer... Already, its plans were nearing completion.

"Commander!" Aster exclaimed. As Graves drove his knife through the golden beings, they fell apart, but to the pilot of the crimson machine's horror, each of those enemies he killed contained a smaller copy inside of it! These quickly assimilated into one larger copy, and, catching onto the metal weapon he used, began crawling its way up toward his neurosuit's arm, assimilating the CQC weapon. He would have little time to drop the blade, and even if he did, his terrible assailant was beginning to expand, countless bladelike arms jabbing forward from the sides and from above. If one of these terrible weapons struck home, he might find his suit succumbing to the enemy's control.

He needn't have worried. With a blast and a roar, a single plasma-coated projectile tore into the being's head, scattering it to the darkness of space. The Venganza dropped from above, hovering alongside Stomp. Letting go of her rifle for a moment, it floated in empty space before her as she drew forth her machine's broadsword.

"Here, commander," She said, offering the weapon. "It's got an energy field system, meaning it should work on that Exomachina. Aim for the head." Handing it over, she took up her rifle once again. The Exomachina were still coming fast and strong, and it looked like the golden soldiers were joining with the lone titan that loomed over the Human fleet, giant wings made from thousands upon thousands of blades spreading from its back and diving downward into the confused, fleeing mass of ships. Striking their combined shields, the blades were repelled, only to plunge forth once more. Once again they were driven back, and the shielding began to buckle. A third time the giant attacked, and the shielding started to crack. The fleet was in direct danger!

Aiming her weapon, Aster let out a roar and launched forward, her shield before her, the boosters mounted both on the back of her neurosuit as well as the shield itself kicking into full speed as the Venganza shot forward like a giant knight, its lance extended forward as it tore through the smaller Exomachina in its path, on a direct course for the gilded mammoth ahead of it...

#, as written by Last
Asher was surprised, apparently he had misjudged the length of the flashknife's energy projection. That's what I call a close one. Asher examined his new weapon, giving it a few practice swings. Yeah, much better.
Before he could even get his bearings, Asher took notice of a golden figure attacking the fleet, it's form was immense.
No. Leviathan.
Aster was already charging ahead in the Venganza, which moved much faster than Stomp in a straight line. Nonetheless, Asher pursued, trying to keep up. He couldn't have known for certain but he was pretty sure he understood how she felt. This was her fight.
A voice cut in, "Cortex here, Noose, do you copy?"
Asher acknowledged as Stomp cut down another enemy. Cortex continued, "Ocean Pearl and the Kelly are joining the fight, Guisarme and Starling are suited up and ready."
Stomp barreled to the side, dodging an Exomachina with more sharp moving parts than a set of dentist's tools, "That was fast. Why didn't the debris slow them down?"
"Marcie plotted a course for them. The AI has been doing a phenomenal job, sir."
"Good to hear. I need you to link-fire with the Kelly and the Ocean Pearl, target is Magister Letum."
"Okay, sir. We'll let you know when we're ready to fire."
Asher had more orders, "Guisarme and Starling are to join with us. I want them there when that shot does what I think it's going to do. Tell them to use energy weapons, aim for the head of the gold machines."
"Yes, sir."
As he flew after the vermilion machine ahead of him, Asher noticed an EXCAP weaving around it. It appeared that Taxi had reformed with the group and was granting cover fire to the speeding Venganza. The Hellward operatives drew closer as the golden giant loomed over them all.

Magister Letum chuckled, its booming laugh going unheard in the silent void of space. From its back - concealed within the folds of its molten body - protruded a single communications array which it had left intact. Connecting the device to its own body, it tapped into the Humans' communication network. It knew exactly what they were planning.

Cocking its faceless head, it glanced at the crimson knight blasting toward it, puny by comparison to its gigantic stature. Its head alone was the size of the rather large Neurosuit, and yet it charged ahead fearlessly. The golden titan could hear that enraged cry just as clearly as the Humans could, and it recognized the sound. That machine's body looked somewhat familiar to it as well. Oh, so it was her. The little girl from way back. It was mildly amused to see an old enemy that had annoyed it previously charging right into its clutches. Raising its hand, it swept it through the air, its mammoth golden limb striking the red-gold energy of the Venganza's fully charged shield. The two locked, the much smaller red unit barely even visible between the typhoon of gold raining down around it as, against all odds, it held, the energy field whirling around it from its shield sending the giant's arm spiraling out around it, scattered to unseen stellar winds.

However, the giant was too strong. The Venganza, despite all of its strength, was sent blurring away as the giant forced its arm forward, the metal that had scattered from it before being drawn back in by its considerable gravity well as the other golden machines were drawn in as well, the already gigantic Exomachina growing to even greater proportions. Even the other Exomachina that had not been part of it before were being pulled in, joining with the titan who led them.

Magister Letum was pleased. Everything had gone just as he planned. During the appearance of the asteroid, the Humans hadn't even noticed the two tiny golden beasts emerging behind the asteroid, each one headed for one of the colonies. Its own surprise attack had drawn out some of their backup forces, making it easier for the two miniscule portions of itself to slip into the Human colonies, where they could conquer everything from within just as the Humans were congratulating themselves on their hard earned victory. Already, his puppets were entering the two colonies' atmospheres undetected. Soon, this system, too, would become fodder for his might.

The smaller copies simply seemed to split and break around Asher's machine, crashing down over and around him like a tidal wave. He might be hard pressed to escape this attack, given that at that very moment, the gigantic Exomachina had raised its gigantic arms and was crushing them down from both above and below, as though it was clapping with Stomp at the center of its grip. Again, it seemed like the commander might be engulfed.

"I'm alright. Just a little jarred, is all," Aster's voice replied. Suddenly, the hand coming in from below was torn apart by a shower of projectiles as the Golden Phoenix once again opened fire, clearing a path for her commander to escape. However, she was unable to do more, for in that instant, a gilded limb, one of an uncountable multitude, jabbed out at her from the side, striking her shield and sending the Venganza hurtling away through the dark of space. Aster, for all her skill, was only just able to correct her course and recover control of her Neurosuit before the hundreds of glinting arms began to rain down upon her, trying to catch hold of her machine and consume it. Desperately she parried, dodged, and fired her rifle into the storm of golden metal, but for all that effort, she was only barely able to avoid being consumed.

Magister Letum might have smirked, had he possessed a face or mouth with which to make such a gesture. He did not, but he was pleased nonetheless. Well, he had stalled long enough and done enough damage for a day's work. He wasn't in any particular hurry to eradicate the Human fleet, and, in fact, doing so would just ruin his carefully laid plans. So instead he acted, roaring silently to the soundless darkness and writhing in pretended pain as blasts from the assembled fleet struck across his body. They weren't having much effect, given that no matter how much damage they did, it was repaired and their projectiles absorbed as quickly as they could deal it, however, judging by how much gilded fluid was seeping from his gigantic body, they might not realize this. They also might not realize that this was not some sort of bleed out - rather, he was simply releasing copies of himself that were so small as to just look like drops of golden metal, and in such numbers that those drops looked to be a veritable flood.

Flailing about as though injured, Magister Letum launched upward toward the emergence field above him, as though desperately trying to escape, all of his scattered pieces doing the same. It was like an ocean of gold rising upward into the dark night of space. He was retreating, it seemed, leaving the remaining Exomachina that were not parts of himself to fight their own battle. His plans were already complete here, so there was no need to risk staying...

Stomp's burning eyes locked onto the pillar of gold as it disappeared into the abyss. "That's the end of him for now. Nice shooting." Asher felt weary, the risk he had taken was a great one. As he had hoped, Elionzvie had managed to pull him out of the fire.
It definitely didn't go as planned, but it could've been worse. "How are you holding up, Elionzvie?" The Venganza, shimmering in crimson, bronze and golden splendor, couldn't be confirmed visually. After a battle like that, anything with a glint to it appeared hostile. As members of the Guisarme and Starling suit teams engaged the scattering enemy remnants, Stomp extended Venganza's broadsword, returning the weapon to its rightful owner.

"Readout says that a few of the motors in my right arm have buckled, from impact strain, but they're still holding," Aster replied coolly, hovering down beside Stomp from where it had been flung by Magister Letum's attack. Sliding her rifle over her back, she thereby freed up her hand to take the broadsword, which she also slid into its sheath. As she spoke, her voice contained a slight hint of pain in it, carefully masked by the anger she felt at the golden titan's escape. "How many did we lose?" She asked poignantly, looking out at the bits of debris hurtling chaotically through space as the battle ended around them.

"I see... Roger that, lead," Aster said sadly, spreading the Venganza's wings and heading for the Cortex. The Exomachina had scattered, and, although many ships had been lost in the process, it seemed that Magister Letum hadn't planned on a battle on this scale. It was over. While Aster wasn't particularly looking forward to the horrifically agonizing sensation of being wrenched back into her own body when she released control of her crimson Neurosuit, at least it meant that no one else would die. The battle had been as brutal as it had been brief, with casualties on both sides. Now that it was finished, the crimson warrior wanted nothing more than to just rest for a while.

The Hellward team approached Cortex and prepared to dock. Cortex was pretty small for a flagship but it served Hellward's primary operations well and was a highly mobile ship. Cortex was like the division itself, discreet and quick to respond to a call of action.
The neurosuits made their way down through the pass-barrier and returned to the suit bay, the EXCAP followed closely behind and came to a smooth landing. Those that safely guided the operatives to their landing zones scattered and went about their business once everyone was secured.
Asher stepped out of his suit and gave Stomp a once-over as engineers busily flocked to the machine to inspect it. Everything seemed alright, there appeared to be no remaining residue from their liquid-state foe. Stomp's blazing orange eyes faded to dark like a pair of dying embers and with it, Asher's nerves also settled down. Instead, battle fatigue took over and his face, usually a countenance of shadowy anger and determination had resurfaced as a visage of fear and worry. He couldn't hide it much more, the captain's ambition had mostly greyed away. Everywhere he swore he could hear whispers, doubts of his once imperishable leadership. Soon it would be over. Real soon.

Asher wasn't sure how long the other pilots had been standing there when he finally snapped to his senses. He cleared his throat. "Excellent job out there, both of you. You're dismissed." At this point, the pilots would usually return to the pilot's quarters unless they had something to say to him at the end of a mission. Asher had to return to the briefing room for a report from Marcie or any other mission crucial personnel, such as the colonists and the escort fleet provided by the emperor. He had a feeling their report was going to be one of great remorse...possibly even accusations. Either way, it was going to be exhausting.

Aster followed her commander down, giving a final glance back to the field of debris and rubble that had once been a majestic fleet, full of the living, and was now nothing more than so many broken shells, full of a lot of bodies. She raised the Venganza's arm, giving a dignified salute to the fallen, before she folded the red giant's wings and dropped slowly down into the hangar. She felt the scaffolding the techs used to get around while maintaining the neurosuits begin to close itself around her gigantic body, and so she sighed, closing her eyes, for she knew that it was time to return to her own body. Resignedly, she settled the red giant amongst the scaffolding, and several large restraints were engaged to keep it stationary once the agony began.

CRACK!

A scream of agony by now familiar to most of the technicians on duty rang out, dulled, but not silenced, even by the thick metal plating between its source and those waiting anxiously outside. Her left arm had been disengaged. The Venganza reeled slightly, struggling against its bonds to clutch its now-limp arm. The restraints were too strong for it, however. No matter how hard the red giant flailed wildly, trying to somehow ease itself of the agony its pilot felt, it could not move.

CRACK!

Aster groaned. Her right arm had been disengaged from the system. She could feel both of her limbs, still tied down on the chair in the cockpit, the thousand needles still stabbing their way into her skin as she was bombarded by wave after wave of electricity, slowly creeping up through her shoulders, then to her head, then down to her torso. With each succeeding electric crackle and pained cry, more and more of her body was brought back to her, yanked forcibly from within her machine.

Oh, God, oh God, when will it end!? What's going to be next... Will it be my leg? I can't feel my legs. Where's it going to come from, where where where wherewherewherewherewhere?!

Another crackle. Another scream. The Venganza slumped, its body sinking forward against its restraints like a dying beast attempting in vain to escape a hunter's trap.

Is this what death feels like? Then how many times have I died already? One? Two? Three? Four? Five? Six? Seven? Maybe I'll just keep on dying over and over again. Is this hell? Where am I? Oh, hello Alric. Are you here too? If you're here, then maybe I can-

Another crackle. Another scream. The Venganza's right leg gave out, although the special restraints it was trapped in prevented it from falling.

No, you died, you burned, like I'm burning now, was it? No, there's something wrong. Where am I? Why can't I feel anything but this-

Another crackle. Another scream. With each consecutive disconnection, Aster's voice grew more and more faint, as though her very life was being sapped by the agonizing machine.

WHERE?! WHERE WILL IT COME FROM NEXT? WHEREWHEREWHEREWHEREWHEREWHERE?!

One final crack, like a gunshot, tore through the air. This sound was longer than the rest by about five seconds, and the scream it elicited soon died down to a tormented moan. The Venganza's body seemed to stiffen, like a man who has been shot, and a metallic groaning rang out through the air as all systems finally shut down, the lights in its eyes fading from a starlit gold to an empty, lifeless green.

Aster's eyes fluttered slightly. She was vaguely aware that she was no longer tied down, that the pain had stopped, but she wasn't buying it. She was in such a petrified state that whenever her eyes managed to stay open for more than a second on end, she looked around wildly, searching for an invisible assailant that was surely waiting to kill her once again. None appeared, and, after a few minutes, she decided that simply waiting for her next death would be rather foolish. Her body was tired, and sore all over, but she made a final desperate attempt to stand. Upon placing her weight on her leg, she almost fell forward immediately, and had to quickly take another step to compensate. She didn't bother to take up her old uniform. She was too tired, and the pain's last echoes were still rebounding through her body. She felt like she had been battered by all the force of a hurricane.

As she stepped onto it, part of the floor gave out, and the gravity lift triggered, catching her mid-fall through the hole she hadn't realized was there. Slowly, she was lowered down to a bit of the scaffolding surrounding her Neurosuit, where she landed weakly, catching herself on the railing. She took a step, desperately trying to keep her eyes open. She just had to put one foot ahead of the other. That was all she needed to... do...

Her leg gave out mid stride, and her hand lost its supportive grip on the railing. Falling forward like a ragdoll dropped from the hand of a bored child, Aster collapsed, a dull, metallic thud ringing out as her body dropped to the floor. Several technicians gather around the unconscious pilot, and two were quickly assigned to take her back to her quarters. Looking regretfully upon the once-mighty Golden Phoenix, they picked her up, slinging her arms around their outside shoulders, thereby supporting her helpless body. Although they patted her reassuringly on the back, congratulating her on how well she had done in a futile attempt to ease her mind, she didn't hear them. She was a gibbering wreck, still muttering incoherently as she searched desperately for where her next death would come from, jumping at every shadow her mind could conjure.

The technicians strode down from the scaffolding, and, taking their charge, saluted Commander Graves as they passed, giving him a helpless look. The Venganza's old-style synchronization systems were more effective at causing pain than most torture machines. But no matter what, Aster refused to change. She hadn't originally even known about the pain - on Elion, she had always passed out at the very first desynchronization, and, as a result, hadn't even felt it. Still, even when she was taken surprise by the sudden agony her machine caused her, her resolve did not weaken. She was full willing to suffer, just as her comrades on Elion had.

As she passed, her exposed sides were in clear view of the two pilots who stood talking on the flight deck. Her arms, her legs, her flanks... They were all an inflamed hue of crimson, painful to look at. Her wrists were even bleeding in some places. She twitched and fumbled about in her restless state of half-awareness. It was clearly all the technicians who carried her could do to keep her upright. One of them let out a yell, asking for a stretcher. Fortunately, there was a medical office on the flight deck, so one was quickly commandeered for the Golden Phoenix's use. As they carried her out, she never stopped her ramblings. But even through all of the nonsensical delusions interspersed amongst her murmurs, there was one plea she never stopped repeating.

"No, it hurts... Stop... I don't want... to die... again."

Then there was this. Graves watched as Elionzvie was taken out of the bay via stretcher. "For every god's sake," Asher said the words quietly but they burned their way through the suit bay technicians, "I told you to make sure she comes out as safely as possible."
"Sorry sir, we were going to set up something to catch her but she didn't want it," one technician blubbered. "I mean, it usually doesn't happen this bad.."
Help? For the Golden Phoenix? Impossible. She carried a heavy burden and insisted on carrying it by herself. He figured he ought to pay her a visit as soon as he was done with a few domestic affairs. She may have need of it. Asher sighed and finished getting out of his pilot gear, keeping only a sweaty undershirt and some cargo pants on, he found himself looking desperately forward to a shower and a clean new uniform. The flight jacket was slung over his back; bearing his rank insignia, it was one of a kind and had to come with him.
As Asher made his way out he ran into Rudger Omnii, casually leaning up against his Neurosuit, Aerios. He listened as Rudger reported his status and griped about the reorientation training. "Good to see you up and running, Omnii." He mentally shrugged away the comment that put 'asteroids' and 'fun' in the same sentence, knowing full well that this was just Omnii at his best. Graves stared up at Aerios, which ponderously leered down in return, a v-shaped visor that seemed vaguely reminiscent of an ancient knight or superhero. The reverse-jointed knees were the key highlight to the machine, something less common these days, more likely to be seen among Exomachina than mankind. Asher nodded reflectively, "Yeah, it's a shame we couldn't get you in there with us. We just barely managed to hold off the Exomachina... Magister Letum was there. I'm sure you read the file, that was the powerful Exomachina almost solely responsible for the Elion Colony disaster." Telling Rudger that he missed out on a difficult challenge was almost like a tease.. but it would likely fuel his ambition for the next fight. At any rate, Asher was glad to see the two-war veteran back up and ready for action. "I gotta' do some politics, I'll see you around, Omnii."

After a brief shower and some rations, Asher got himself a clean uniform and proceeded back to the briefing room. Marcie greeted him as he entered, standing by to give him a report. It wasn't going to be pretty. "So, Marcie, how are things?" he asked the question in the form of casual small-talk, but the AI knew what he meant.
"Our empire escort has taken heavy losses, sir...but Hellward Division and the colonies are completely fine, save light damage to Neurosuits Venganza and Stomp, which are likely to be repaired within the hour."
"Good. Anything else?"
"Calls from Peridot Colony and Viridian." Viridian was the ship that belonged to the commander of the empire escort. Asher buried his face into his hands and rubbed his eyes. He slumped into the command chair and eyed the empty viewscreen for a moment. Finally, he sat up, taking a more official posture. "Go ahead, Marcie." Caller, you're on the air.

An eager young face appeared on the viewscreen, "Commander Graves?"
"Yeah."
"Ella Shorebridge, commander of the Kelly."
Asher reeled back slightly, how could someone so young end up as a ship captain, or for that matter, commander of an entire unit? "What is it, Shorebridge?"
"We've been assigned to join with the escort force if you have need of us." she looked almost ready to burst from excitement, "Also, it's no secret Peridot Colony has been wanting to work with Hellward for some time. The Guisarme Division comes highly recommended, I even think we have a few potential candidates for new Hellward pilots aboard the Kelly, that's how confident I am."
If anything, Asher was impressed with the pride the young lady had exuded, "We shall see. We're happy to have a good ship and some extra suits in any case."
"Yep! Let us know if you need anything, sir." With that, the young lady flickered off screen.
Next call.

The next call came from the Viridian, Asher sipped at a coffee that had been brought to him as the Viridian captain gave his report and questioned the commander's motives. Asher quelled the captain's flame a little by reminding him of the crafty and destructive nature of a battle with Magister Letum, that they had been lucky to have walked away with what they had. It also appeared part of the reason the Kelly had been sent to the escort force was due to the captain's complaining to the colonies as well. Asher let the man rant and gently dismissed him.

When the call was over, Asher sat up. "Glad that's over."
The door slid open automatically and Marcie's disembodied voice prodded gently, "Are you tending to Elionzvie, Commander?"
Tending? That was a strange term, "Yeah, I was going to see how she was holding up."
"I see. Send her my regards as well." Asher nodded, not even certain where to nod to. It was a very odd request from Marcie, especially since she wasn't quite organic...but nonetheless he'd honour her simple favour.

Aster groaned, clutching her head. The first thing she had noticed upon opening her eyes once again was the light. The second thing she had noticed was the pulses of agony tearing through her skull every time she so much as blinked. She didn't drink, but she had a feeling that this was what one felt like after an extreme binge - if not worse. It didn't help that she seemed to bob up and down constantly, suspended in a tank of some kind of pale scarlet liquid by several tight cables around her limbs. This was odd, because she couldn't even feel these cables holding her in place. Come to think of it, she couldn't even feel any of her lower body.

Hmm. She was still clad in her synchro-suit, so at least she was clothed - in the most liberal sense of the word, anyway. Glancing down, she could see her arms in the semi-transparent liquid she floated in. That was also odd. Her red "Transfer Burns" - injuries caused by the electric current and the prodding needles in her pilot's seat - were nowhere to be seen. Her formerly bloodied wrists were patched up as well, and her headache already seemed to be abating - what was that on her head? It seemed to be a cloth, also soaked with the unusual red liquid. While it was rather annoying having the object pressing down on her skull, at least it seemed to be doing something.

Augh, she was so tired. Her head tilted forward, and her eyelids drooped. She had a vague sensation of something holding her head upright - probably a collar or something to keep her from drowning herself in the tank while she was asleep. It hardly mattered to her. She was so sleepy...

Just as she almost drifted off, her chin came into contact with the fluid below. It had the consistency of a thin jello, but that wasn't the first thing she noticed.

It was freezing! She let out a gasp of surprise, her eyes flying open as she drew her head back. Unfortunately, this sudden intake of breath sucked in some of the liquid stuck to her chin, and she almost inhaled it, throwing her into a fit of coughing. It tasted like engine coolant fluid, and she was rather reluctant to let it go down her windpipe.

"Oh, good, you're awake!" The voice of a medical technician brought her out of her reverie. The bay was empty, aside from the strange tank she floated in, and a small chair in the corner, on which a man in a lab coat sat reading a book. It was he who had spoken, his attention drawn by her coughing. "You're not supposed to drink that. It's an experimental cure for Transfer Burns, with a few other serums mixed in to cool your head."

"I noticed," Aster said irritably, now fully awake, giving a rather indignant look to the doctor as he stood up, walking over to her tank. "Well, it seems to have worked, in any case. It also seems to have frozen my body to the point of being numb."

"Not exactly. It feels cold, but it's actually at room temperature. It's complicated," The doctor responded breezily.

"Whatever. That doesn't change the fact that I can't feel my lower body," The Golden Phoenix said.

"It's probably better that way. We both know that on any other day, you'd have stayed in bed muttering to yourself for hours and groaning every time you moved. It's actually only been 20 minutes since you passed out, so I'd say this cure was a success."

"I hope you'll understand if I don't share your enthusiasm. They didn't have this wonderful little cure of yours, but they got by," Aster said. How could she atone for her own selfish survival if her path was made easy for her?

"Please, don't give me that argument, Aster," The doctor said sadly. "You're going to kill yourself if you keep acting this way. Please, allow me to continue using this cure so you can maintain a normal level of combat readiness. You're more useful fighting out there to save everyone than you are holed up in your quarters, torturing yourself for feeling guilty. Let me help you, or you'll end up burning yourself out and dying before you're 30," The doctor pleaded sadly. "Besides, what if Letum shows back up? We both know you wouldn't miss that fight for anything."

"You should know by now that I don't care when I die, as long as I take Letum with me before I do," Aster said grimly. "But, for that reason, I guess I don't have a choice. After all, I'm Hellward's little pet phoenix, trapped in their golden cage. There's already a motion to force me to upgrade, and this might at least put that off. Who cares how I think on the matter?"

"Surely it's not as bad as you make it out to be. It's just that you're one of our best pilots, and the people love you. How could command let someone as important as you die like that?"

"Exactly. They can't. So, they force me to live because I'm useful to them. You just proved my point."

The doctor sighed, throwing up his hands. "Whatever you say, Elionzvie," he said resignedly. "I'll undo your restraints now, since I don't think you'll drown yourself now that you're awake. Although, with you saying things like that, I can never really be sure." He pressed a few buttons on a terminal at the base of where she floated, and Aster saw, rather than felt, the restraints loosening, then falling to the bottom of the tank. The collar suspending her head above the liquid was the only thing that stayed, so she would not slip below the fluid's surface.

"A bird can't fly away if it's caged, doctor. I still have my mission to carry out, and until then, I'm trapped inside. This Phoenix isn't going anywhere."

"Geez, girl," The doctor prodded. "This is why nobody talks to you."

"And why all my public appearances are scripted. Don't forget that part," Aster added pointedly. "This bird can't even sing without asking what the tune should be."

"Right, right. You just stay in there until I get back," the doctor dismissed, heading for the door. As it slid open, he reacted in surprise.

"Oh, Commander!" He exclaimed, quickly saluting. "If you're here to see Aster, she's conscious. Watch out, though. She seems to be in one of her moods. Make sure to take your depression medication before entering, because we're not sure if it's contagious," He added sarcastically, standing aside to let the commander enter.

The commander had come to see her? How unusual. Aster thought he was usually busy immediately after a mission. Why bother making time just to come talk to her? Oh, she was pretty sure what this was going to be all about. He was probably going to pressure her into accepting a synchronization update. Who wouldn't, after seeing the scene she'd made in the neurosuit bay? Still, he should have known by now what the answer would invariably be.

"Hello, Commander," Aster greeted coolly. "I would salute you, but I can't exactly move my arms at the moment."

"At any rate, 'at ease' still seems like the appropriate command, soldier." the expression that flickered on his face was almost a smile, though not quite, "Your suit extraction looked a bit more painful than usual so I came to check up on you." Asher took a moment to say the next line, "Marcie sends her regards as well." Something about saying that, Marcie acting almost human, it left a weird taste on the tip of his tongue.. like nickel.
Looking at Aster, she appeared to be on her guard. The Golden Phoenix was certainly a proud creature and it came to Asher's attention that visiting her in a medical office would've been somewhat compromising....but no, that was not it.

The update.

There we have it. Asher had put the idea to rest a while ago, yet regardless he still received pressure from the rest of the team to proceed with her update. Not to mention, when Hellward went public, there'd been an increase in the empire's involvement in Hellward's affairs as well. These days, Asher Graves felt more like a politician than a military commander.

Going public may have killed Hellward. They were a team of fighters, defenders...survivors. They weren't diplomats, they weren't meant to act as crusaders and heroes. Their battles went on in secret, their actions unbeknownst to the rest of the human empire. It was their mission to fight the Exomachina...but should that impossible enemy fall, there would be no doubt, the empire would become the next enemy.

Aster Rei Elionzvie didn't want the update. She needed that pain. For her, it was her torch to carry...but if she dropped that torch it was going to burn everyone else. Down to business...

"We need to upgrade the Venganza. You understand I'm expected to clear you for a full synchronization update." Everyone is responsible for their own path in life...except in war., thought Asher, returning Elionzvie's sapphire glare with firm eyes like cold steel, "I hope you know I'm willing to negotiate. I've had the power to move this motion ahead all along."

"I knew you were going to say that. However, I feel obligated to inform you that the only thing that was abnormal about today's desynchronization was that this special treatment tube had been prepared for me. I have managed to cope thus far without having this technology at my disposal - surely now that I have it, and can desynchronize without any lasting effects, I will be able to maintain a normal level of combat-readiness, regardless?" Aster countered. She did not raise her voice or act overly argumentative, but for her, any reluctance to follow an order was a complete novelty. The fact that she offered a counterpoint at all, instead of holding her peace, was remarkable, unless one took into consideration that this was the one, most important thing that she was not willing to compromise on.

Still, saying that she had managed to cope before now was a bit of an overstatement. Depending on how long she remained in the Venganza, she had been known to be in an agonized semi-conscious state for up to a whole day. Nonetheless, she was always ready for battle, even if she was only just recovering from rather serious Transfer Burns. It was for this reason, and this reason alone that she had been allowed to remain using the old-style synchronization systems currently installed on the Venganza.

The Golden Phoenix met her commander's steel gaze, her icy blue eyes staring coolly down at him. This was one matter on which she could not compromise. Even if she dreaded the pain each mission brought, this was something she had to do.

"Will do, sir," Aster said, a slight, sad smile gracing her countenance as her voice rang dully out from the tube. She nodded as she spoke, giving this acknowledgement in place of a salute. She watched as her commander turned, slumping and heading for the door. While it wasn't strictly formal of her - and, in fact, went against some of the rules of military dignity - she felt obligated to say something more than just "will do." Quickly, she found the words she was looking for, and spoke them just as quickly.

"Thank you, captain," She said stoically, watching as her commander left. "I'll continue doing a 'good job,' then, so as not to necessitate such a measure."

As Graves reached the door, it opened once again, the doctor returning from his brief walk, bringing with him a bed on a wheeled tray - presumably for her use. He saluted, stepping aside so as to let the Captain through. Then, he pulled in the bed.

"Alright, little miss bird in a cage," the doctor said with a sigh, wheeling up the tray and beginning to type on the console at the base of the tube. "I'm lettin' ya out now." With that, he pressed a button. Slowly, Aster felt feeling returning to her body as the fluid slowly drained from the tube where she had been suspended. The collar unfastened itself so as not to hang her now that there was no longer any liquid keeping her up. Slowly, she floated with receding liquid level to the bottom of the tank, landing shakily and propping herself up against the thick glass wall. This did not support her enfeebled body for long, however, for it soon opened up, causing her to fall out. The doctor, raising a burly arm, caught her and placed her on the bed.

"Alright, then. If you're done talkin' to her, sir, I'm gonna return her to her quarters, as usual. She needs some sleep after... that."

No rest for a soldier.

First Letum, now Emissary. The ghosts of Hellward's past were all coming back. Emissary didn't possess nearly the level of intelligence exhibited by Magister Letum, however, his damage to the empire was quite extensive. Emissary had everyone going. Tricking the empire into believing the Exomachina could be reasoned with; and who could blame them for trying? Any sort of bargaining posture could lead to an end to the war, even if it would be a step at the time.
The Exomachina had no mercy. That was all too clear now.

Zuin wasn't a far jump. The crew would experience a brief blackout while in flash stasis, the effect would be similar to falling asleep for two seconds while standing. Still, Asher wasn't happy about embarking on another mission so soon after the last one. He could permit a day's rest; no more. Leaving a task to rest wasn't the Hellward Division's way.
He needed to check the available roster of pilots and form a strategy.
"Speed." said Asher simply, catching the attention of a soup-slurping Omnii, "Power and speed. Enjoy the soup, Omnii." Graves sat up and excused himself from the table, leaving his drink behind.

Graves made his way back to briefing room, third time today.
When Asher entered he found the lights had been turned off. Quietly, Asher took a step forward and at that moment the large view-screen flickered, revealing a woman's form clouded in static. When the fuzz faded away he took notice of a handsome woman with piercing blue eyes and a short mess of black hair that melded into the dark background. "Hello, Commander." It was a familiar voice.
"Marcie?"
"Yes, it's me. How do you like the new interface? Compliments of Captain Ruban." She referred of course to the man who sat at the helm of Cortex.
Asher remained silent for a short while. "Why are the lights off?" Quickly, light flooded back into the room.
"Apologies, sir. I was hoping to make my first appearance in this form...a bit more dramatic."
"I see," a mental reflex was triggered, "It's a good look for you, Marcie."
"Thank you, Commander."

Asher became aware that his heart had began pounding. He turned away from the view-screen and Marcie's...eyes.
"You seem uncomfortable, Commander."
"No, I'm fine." he derailed the subject effortlessly, "Just received information on some suspicious activity near Zuin."
Marcie smiled...expressing relief? Asher found himself starting to calm down. He realized this wasn't the result of elation, though Marcie's appearance was indeed attractive; the new feeling he was getting was closer to fear. Graves was beginning to feel he couldn't trust Marcie. "I need to know which pilots are mission-ready, Marcie. Starting tomorrow morning."
"Yes sir....just a second...." the AI's avatar put her fingers to her temples, as if locating the Hellward members via psychic link, "At this time; Taxi, Atomic, Virgin Blue....and Golden Phoenix."
"Elionzvie is ready?"
"Affirmative, sir. Thanks to the new treatment, Aster Rei Elionzvie's recovery time from nervous system shock has been nearly cut in half. She'll be mission-ready in the morning."

Asher put his hands in his pockets and leaned back on the wall. It was preferred over the command chair. "OK. Leave a message with Elionzvie, Omnii and Alex-Zander-"
"Not Ike Salvo, sir?"
Asher was annoyed she'd interrupt him like that, "No. Not Salvo, Marcie. I need personnel that match the criteria for the mission. Tell the three pilots that I had picked to report to the briefing room at 0900 hours."
"Yes, sir." said the AI, sheepishly.
"I'm returning to my quarters for the rest of the evening. Good night, Marcie."
Asher heard the AI mutter 'Good Night' behind him as he stormed out of the briefing room.
