Here, At the End of the World

Here, At the End of the World

0.5 INK

It's strange what you'll find in a little corner of Montana. The locals swear the city is haunted, but not by anything truly malevolent. Just spooks and gremlins down on their luck.

Introduction

[[OOC Thread "The Fairbrooks Gazette" contains setting information updated regularly.]

It's not a big city, but it's not a small one. Mountains in three directions, endless plains in one, and plenty of streams and forests. The land is a verdant patchwork of autumn color under crystalline skies and cottony clouds.

They don't call it Land of the Big Sky for nothing. Welcome to Fairbrooks, Montana.

The city was founded over a century ago and began with a train depot, a trading post, a cattle ranch, and a bunch of fur trappers. It nestles in a narrow valley with highlands and forests on either side, eventually ending at the mountain foothills. A little more liberal than most towns around, but a little more conservative than places out east: an odd mix of rednecks and hippies, locals and immigrants, hunters and vegetarians. People keep the prejudice to themselves mostly, but enough whiskey risks bringing out the nasty in anyone.

Here, in this 30,000 plus city, the Rapture never happened. Stranger still, no one knows it was supposed to. One'd think that, in a town reporting 74% of residents as Chrisitan, people would be looking for that kind of thing.

And for some reason, the less than natural denizens of the world wind up here quite often. The unawares do not notice them, but they certainly notice each other. Their presence is felt on some level, however, with even first-time Senate campaigner Michael Smith (R-MT) calling Fairbrooks a "magical place." There's a reason people who visit often find themselves staying.

Something's wrong, though. Fairbrooks seems a little too isolated, a little too quaint, and the troubles of the modern world don't seem to weigh heavily on the hearts of the citizens. And when things aren't so idyllic, they're absolutely insane. Not much in the way of a "middle ground" here.

AUSPICIOUS BEGINNINGS

There is an ad (on Craigslist, Zillow perhaps, or even the local classifieds) announcing a place for rent. A piece of property on the outskirts of Fairbrooks is charging a mere $400 a month for room rental on a multi-building horse ranch. Eight rooms spread between a main house and a cozy guest house. Basic cleanliness required, respect the space of others, and free dinner five nights a week. Shared living rooms, comfortable private bedrooms, and five bathrooms.

No curfews, minor noise restrictions, 420 friendly, and it's out on Wayward Oak, a road just off the highway west of town with easy access to the outdoors. And $400 a month for rent? In the midst of rising costs and a housing crisis, that's about a screaming deal.

There is a cell number attached to the ad with instructions to "Ask for Avi."

OOC: Character Creation

Characters will be residents of or new arrivals to the city of Fairbrooks, Montana. It is a fictional city based on bits and pieces of real cities. Characters can be any kind of modern character you wish to play. You are perfectly able to play an ever day Joe or Jane, but I do encourage characters with a little bit of the supernatural.

Subtlety is key here. I'm looking for something feasibly able to pass as normal with little to no need for magical blinders put on laypeople. There is a glamour over Fairbrooks that hides supernatural features from most, but a minotaur will still cause people to say, "holy shit, it's a minotaur."

Think mediums, psychics, fey, etc. Or (much loved) make up something totally new from existing supernatural tropes. A mystical gambler who bets years of remaining life instead of money? A dancer who unknowingly invites the dead to dance with them? The ghost of a musician who haunts their guitar? How about a sentient computer program? Not many wrong answers here.

Got a character that doesn't quite fit into other RPs? Play 'em here.

CHARACTER CREATION RULES

1.) The Basics

These are not meant to LIMIT a character, but rather to define where a character excels. In the rare case where a PC performs a task with an uncertain or potentially game-changing outcome, a dice roll may be necessary. Most all actions will factor in character Traits, Skills, and Tidbits and be resolved without any arbitration.

Ready for the dice rules?

If your character attempts an action they could legitimately perform, roll 1d3. 1 = Failure, 2 = Partial Success, 3 = Success.

If they attempt an action where one of their Traits or one of their Skills would come in handy, roll 1d4. 1 = Failure, 2 = Partial Success, 3 & 4 = Success.

If they attempt an action where they have a Trait and a Skill relevant to the action, roll 1d5. 1 = Failure, 2 = Partial Success, 3 & 4 = Success, 5 = Great Success.

If your character has a Weakness that would be considered in an action, the die goes down one step.

That is all.

2.) Traits, Skills, and Tidbits

Traits represent areas where your character naturally excels. Choose 4 of them. You may also choose up to 2 Weaknesses and choose up to an additional 2 Traits. The Traits are: Strong, Resilient, Athletic, Agile, Swift, Graceful, Intelligent, Clever, Wise, Charming, Commanding, Stoic. Play to your character's traits. They're not just there for bonuses.

Weaknesses are to add flavor, not to make your character unfit. You can play them as extreme as you wish, but you don't have to. They are: Weaker, Unhealthy, Exhaustible, Clumsy, Gimped, Hamfisted, Luddite, Dim, Unaware, Crass, Shy, Wishywashy. You may also choose your own. "Anger Problem," "No Filter," "Sickly", "Dependent on [choice]", "Phobia", "PTSD", etc.

Skills are things your character has practiced and learned. The Skills are whatever you want. Seriously. Make them a little broad, too. "Computers." "Fighting." "Occult." "Art." "Administration." "Military." "Haute Couture." "Larceny." "Smooth Talker." Stuff like that. No, you do not have to take simple job actions as a skill. I don't need a character running around with "Dishwashing," "Coffee pouring," and "Taking Movie Tickets" as skills. As hilarious as it would be to make "Getting Yourself Dressed" a skill.

Tidbits are those little special things that define a character's roll in the setting. Don't go crazy with them, but have fun. "Trust fund baby" could be one. "Multilingual" could be one. "Tribal council connections" would be a good one for a Native American character. "Is a cop." "Used to be famous." Stuff like that.

Other than that, everything else is up to you.

3.) What, Exactly, Your Character Is...

If you character is supernatural in some way (which I would recommend, to be true to theme), describe what they are. Where does their non-natural abilities or nature come from? Heritage? A curse? A blessing? A literal deal with a devil? What does their strange nature allow them to do? This doesn't just have to be "can throw fireballs" or "is really, really strong". It can have more subtle functions. The first time I ran this game, one of the characters was, in fact, the gambler I mentioned, a man trying to pay back a devilish patron the years of life he owed them by conning mortals into gambling away their remaining years.

Just keep it at a solid level. Think "is a witch" rather than "is Grandmaester of Time and Space." "Can meld into shadows" instead of "Lord Sephiroth Darkdeath, the God of Darkness."

4.) THE CATCH...

Every character must have some part of their backstory relating to another character. You must choose another PC to have a connection with. If the other player agrees, you may create joint backstories. If your character does not want the other character to know they have a connection, that is fine too.

Players can also choose main NPC Avi as a Catch, if desired.

This can be almost anything you want, so long as it is not legitimately destructive to the other character or the other player's enjoyment.

5.) The Story

I will sprinkle plot hooks all around. The players will have to decide which ones to pursue, if any. Other than that, it's a simple story: group of unusual people from different walks of life coexisting in a world that doesn't realize what they are.

Toggle Rules

1.) Keep it in continuity. I give a lot of freedom when it comes to character design. All I ask is that the character fits the setting. So no Hogwart's students, Jedi, aliens, or cyborgs.

2.) Keep it civil. Creeping some of the other active Universes on this site, I'm not too worried about this. But no demeaning or insulting other players for the actions of their characters. In the words of Matthew Kearney: "Hey mama, don't want no drama."

3.) Prejudice. Prejudice in the context of the fictional setting may happen, but I purposely keep it very mild due to a desire to avoid legitimately offending a player. Kind of like that "moral outrage" shit that TV shows and comic books use to elicit illicit response. No racial slurs, no "blue pill" garbage, etc.

4.) Have fun. Hell, it's a fantasy RP about magical roommates. It's supposed to be enjoyable.

BEAST

And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?

W.B. Yeats, The Second Coming

Early September, the time of year when day sheds its light magnanimously yet free of heat's oppression. At the ranch house on Wayward Oak, green pine and leaves were outlined in golden edges under the sun's smile. The whole of nature itself seemed to sigh, knowing that the hustle and bustle of summer's furnace is gone at last.

The gravel drive gave way to a paved roundabout, with a garage to the right and a two-story house surrounded by stone bordered flower beds to the left. "Modern frontier" would be a good description for the house, as it bore a contemporary aesthetic, yet was built to look like some kind of cabin, or fort. There were two cars in the garage: a white Nissan Maxima, and a red '68 Charger.

The new residents were told to arrive whenever they wished, and the property's owner - a younger man named Aviton Morren - offered assistance in helping them move their things inside if they needed it. 'Feel free to come on in,' he'd said on the phone, 'I'll be home all day being as lazy as possible.' No knock requested, but those polite enough to knock anyways would be greeted by an energetic, "Yeah, come on in!" and immediately hear some quiet Bob Seger ("Even Now" from The Distance, a truly seminal album). Smells were coming from the kitchen that would make even the pickiest eater salivate.

Was that the smell of biscuits? Yes. Yes it was. The faux-marble top of the kitchen's island was covered with a couple clean dish towels upon which were set tall, layered biscuits. Something else, too - sausage, fresh sage, onions cooking in butter - no, not butter, but bacon fat! - and the lingering sweetness of other baked treats.

The guy cooking these delights looked more a reformed mountain man than a baker. Tall, lean, athletic, dressed in some faded jeans and a simple long-sleeved tee that had seen better days. "Scruffy" was a good word for him - shaggy hair, close-trimmed beard, prominent jaw, his "All-American Boy" vibe hidden under friendly ease and a lack of grooming.

"Hey, give me just a second." The man washed and dried his hands. "Doing breakfast tomorrow at the VFW. Biscuits and gravy. Figured it'd be easier to cook it here so I don't make a mess of their kitchen." He walked forward, smiling, steps swift and purposeful.

"Happy to have you. I'm Avi, if you haven't figured that out yet. You hungry? C'mon, take a seat. I got some food heating up for lunch and help yourself to the scones. That jam's really good - made it a few days ago. Joy of having raspberry bushes." Ruddy hand offered to the newbies. Seemed a decent enough guy at first glance, and didn't act like he even realized he had a halo of pale, silver light hovering an inch above his head. Maybe he didn't notice it. Maybe he didn't notice that the others noticed it. But he definitely had a halo.

It wasn't that abnormal, honestly. In Fairbrooks, stranger things existed than guys with halos.

Crunch, crunch, crunch went chunks of rock as little steps drummed along the graveled path. They had an accompaniment - the warbling of polyurethane wheels on loose stone. Eventually, there was a clatter, and the melody changed. Sounding much like the hiss of a gas-fed flame, the big black luggage bag rolled along on pavement now, tugged by a young woman not terribly much larger than it. Her wheels clicked on the concrete seams as she drew closer and closer to the door.

It seemed polite to knock, and so she did upon reaching the door, rapping her knuckles upon it and awaiting her invitation before carefully pushing it open. She stepped inside, heaving her suitcase in behind her.

Jet black hair, piercing blue eyes, cheap gray hoodie, expensive headphones. She moved with a certain grace, as if every motion was rehearsed, each segueing perfectly into the next. She wore a disposable face mask, but the clarity of her voice came through despite it.

"Hey! One moment, let me just put this away," she said, excusing herself to her room with case in tow. She wasted no time in returning. She pulled out one of the stools at the kitchen island with a soft skrrrn before seating herself upon it as instructed. Her eyes, like focused lenses, peered sharply and inquisitively at the man before her, keeping watch over his every move. She was polite, cordial, even friendly...but her alertness showed her guard was not yet lowered. Maybe she'd noticed the halo, or maybe that's just how she was - it was too early to tell. Briefly, the conversation awkwardly lulled, creating a silence disturbed only by the sounds of cooking and Bob Seger crooning in the background.

"Sorry, was it Aw-vee or Av-vee?" she finally inquired, seeking to ease the tension she'd helped create. "Okay, so just 'Avi.' Got it. I'm Ingrid. Just Ingrid. Nice to meet you," she continued.

She denied the handshake offered her, explaining it by pointing at her mask and motioning broadly. "Sorry. You know." Okay, well, that explained the mask, but what about the headphones? She'd been pleasant in most every other respect; why hadn't she taken them off yet?

"Could I trouble you for a glass of water? I don't know where anything is yet," she asked, with all the tone and grace of a Southerner, but none of the drawl. Where was she from? Her accent was...hard to place. This girl was already presenting mysteries, but at the very least, she had made efforts to get off on the right foot.

Larry Wesker clutched his pendant.

So this is home now… It is beautiful.

The sunlight reflected off Wesker’s spectacles as he approached the house, trailing behind the young woman in headphones. His feet dragged on the gravel. His eyebrows couldn’t be more furrowed. His eyes were sunken in, as was his expression. A grimace that seemed to be shaped by the moustache that accompanied it. Even his short brown hair was wiry and stiff, albeit combed neatly.

His luggage was minimal, a single leather brown suitcase he brought in with him.

Upon laying his eyes on Avi, Wesker clutched the pendant tighter. It glowed a ghostly blue. Of more interest was the man’s halo above his head. Of course in Wesker’s experience, it was best to keep all the strangeness between him and his wife. This Avi didn’t seem to register its existence, so neither would he.

His voice was just as forlorn as the rest of his appearance.

“Larry Wesker. Hello.” He said, reluctant to take his right hand off the pendant to take a scone. “Thanks.” He had made scones himself, what felt like a long long time ago. It tasted as sweet as the memory, and as fluffy as his recollection of it.

The girl had returned, and for a moment Wesker held eye contact. He quickly put down the scone to clutch his pendant once more, almost wincing.

“I could also do with a glass. Long day. Parched.” He struggled to look back up to the girl, loosening the grip on his pendant. He wasn’t looking forward to having to contend with someone so young. The headphones were typical of today’s youth. On the bright side, he imagined that he wouldn’t have to listen to her music. Hopefully that was all his wife was concerned about too. It could be hard to tell, sometimes.

“And a tour would be exceptional.”
